Next up: Immigration

The president is taking his second-term agenda on the road next week.

However, the topic of Tuesday’s trip is immigration and not gun control. While event details are still being sorted out, the White House has confirmed that “the president will be traveling to Nevada on Tuesday to redouble the Administration's efforts to work with Congress to fix the broken immigration system this year.”

This comes after an unannounced meeting at the White House with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Friday morning. Members of the caucus and the White House expressed a “sense of urgency” when it came to tackling the issue of comprehensive immigration reform.

Since his re-election, President Obama has said that he would attempt to tackle the issue in his second term and the topic was given prominence by being included in his inaugural address.

“Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity,” he said Monday.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), who has been an outspoken supporter of the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform said after the meeting, “We all need to work together -- the president and Congress, Republicans and Democrats -- to get something done right away."

In an interview late last year, House Speaker John Boehner said, “I think a comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I’m confident that the president, myself, others, can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.”

But while there has been acknowledgement and even some optimism on both sides of the aisle that there needs to be some type of reform to the country’s immigration system, it is still unclear how any kind of large-scale reform would move through Congress, what the details would be, and who would spearhead it.

President Obama's push for comprehensive immigration reform comes after his sweeping advantage with Latinos in his re-election. Obama won 71 percent of Latinos, up from 67% in 2008. They made up 10 percent of the electorate, up from 9 percent in 2008, which underperforms their population nationally -- 16 percent, according to the U.S. Census.

In Nevada, those shares are even higher. Obama won 74 percent of Hispanics in Nevada, and made up 19 percent of the electorate (but are 27 percent of the overall population). They were crucial in helping Obama to a 52-46% win in the Silver State, as well as victories in Colorado, New Mexico, and Florida.

Border agents are a clear sign it's illegal to enter illegally. How about we take down the contradicting, clear signs that our govt. hangs out for all to see that say if you make it over the border illegally you have earned the right to stay and a right to enjoy 'real' americans tax money. I wouldn't be surprised if Obeyme's plan is to tax us more to 'make them' feel prosperous like 'real' americans used to feel.

Well they should feel prosperous, they get everything for free while I pay taxes. The term earn is non existent in colleges, my daughter determined she is entitled to an education at my expense. Guess which party she votes for.

Thats very commendable of you NC except for one small detail ..... That is one of the few legitimate functions of a Federal Government, National Defense. What does it say when that Entity is no longer capable or willing to perform its function? This could very well be the generation to live in a United country before it fragments into regional tyrannies. When the president in office never worked a day in his life, lived in relative wealth all his life, advanced based solely on affirmative action not ability how is he capable of understanding the real life problems and hardship of the American citizen? Mediocrity, the agenda of his politics will not hold the country together and it is destroying the economy....no big surprise, the day I heard clintons speech about his "new economy" I predicted exactly the situation of today, what I did not foresee was the citizen of this nation not only following blindly but cheering while the Republic collapses.

I hope this so called comprehensive immigration reform withers and dies.

What an affront to the 20 plus million unemployed US citizens and to US citizenship as a whole to have foreigners, especially those who have no business even being in the country elevated above US citizens.

It's not as though this country is restrictive with legal immigration, once again US citizen workers are being systematically "cleansed" from the workforce by 125,000* work visa waving foreigners each and every month. This has been going on for many years.

Were it not for this outrageously high level of immigration there would be little or no unemployment in the USA.

I do have to agree with you. But we are going down the tubes anyways. This next round of unemployment is going to hit a lot more people some of those that say your lazy and should get out there and get a job. I can't say that I will be sorry for those idiots.

But OB needs to be very careful. Sure there are a lot of votes from people who should not be voting in the first place.

How many food stamps can this country provide. We don't want to pay SS so some of the workforce can retire. Just how is this all going to work out when the next load of illegals from all over the world arrive here.

They come with there grandparents, brothers and sister and kids in tow. We can't use medicare beds are full and the schools are forced to higher translators to teach English.

I'm not against immigration I welcome it. But with the amount of legals and illegals all at once there are not enough tax payers.

Anyone who thinks mass immigration from a poor sh!thole of a country is a good thing needs to turn on their brain. They destroyed their own country, and they are doing the same to ours. Mexico didn't become that because of some magic force, it was the culture and people that made it happen. There's a reason why all the US/Mexico border states are in such bad shape, and I think most people can figure out the answer. These politicians are only championing immigration reform so they can get votes and drive the wages down even further.

personally I'm scared of the words comprehensive approach. What does that mean. It could mean a hundred different things and with our government you know it only means we pay more in taxes. We already support a great many countries with aide.

How much more blood can they drain from us.

        Reply#135 - Sat Jan 26, 2013 2:40 AM EST

Any immigration reform Obama comes up with will be geared toward the illegals that got him reelected. After all, as an illegal immigrant himself, he needs to support his own. More free reign for illegals and muslims, that is Obama's agenda.

Create jobs by securing and or closing our borders , I mean 24hrs a day. Either by Military personnel or more border patrol agents. Unemployment gets better by creating more jobs that illegals vacate, Medical costs go down, Class sizes in schools go down, meaning better education for all of our kids. Crimes go down (gangs,Drug dealers) etc. IDK but i think it might work

There is a lot to think about here

What happens to all those Chinese babies whose mom's were just visiting and happened to have there baby's here does mom and dad and grandparents now become citizens

How do you stop the next load of illegals when you couldn't stop these

We yell about mental health does a visitor who knows they need help just get off the plane and then get admitted to hospital. It happens. 'when there well they go home or try to stay

There are a lot of things to consider. Mexicans are not all of the problem They just have easier access to the US.

New immigration laws could open up a bundle of new trouble. Once a citizen they would not have those illegal jobs they now have They'd feel entitled and want better leaving those jobs vacant for new illegals

What does the government think it's doing. Building up a army don't think that would work they'd just high tail it back where they come from. Once a citizen they may not vote the way OB or the Rep's want them to.

and I guarantee if more come over the boarder once this happens there just may be another civil war. And I hope the Whitehouse goes down first.

I am not so much worried about that Chinese baby, in the U.S. 90% of the problem is from S.America. The sum amount of all other groups is just not a blip on the radar. The only other group at this time to worry about is the muslim/islamic trash. One is too many, look at the degrding Europe as an example ... even such civilized regions like Sweden, England and Holland are just cesspools. The invasion from S.America has destroyed California economy and quality of life for citizens, regressing to 3rd world levels. California not so very long ago, if it had been its own nation, had an economy that ranked it among the top 5 in the world. Then came the "progressive" and the invasion so now its just another broke, ignorant, dangerous, degrading 3rd world impotent make-believe governed region. That is the future for the world if the liberal continues. Dont worry about that Chinese illegal, it is the next world superpower to replace the America that provided security and hope for the last century. Pax Americana will be too broke and the dark ages are coming, universal poverty has always been the end result of the left.

I think this is his legacy right here. The main reason for America's immigration woes, is its inadequate immigration laws. They need a 21st century update. Streamline the process, and make it more efficient. To deal with demand.

MoreJ ..... That is something the "progressive just does not, or is capable of, understand. People of other cultures do not have the same world in the same way as you do. What you see as "cultural diversity" and "tolerance" they see as weakness and opportunity to corrupt. The world will never be the utopia lotus eating fantasy. Look at what has happened to such examples as Europe with that simple-minded agenda: gang rapes, muderof female adults and children, cities that were beautiful and peaceful are now dangerous to walk at night, broke and frankly just insane growing islamic vision of how the world should be (not your vision). Look at what is happening to the southwestern part of the U.S. (particurally in the once paradise of California), at Canada ... the world is devolving in your life-time to the dark ages. The end result of that childish dream scape is a more primitive, less civilized dangerous and brutal world. Please grow up before it is too late.

The demise of this country will be our own population taking advantage of the welfare system coupled with weak leaders like Bill Clinton and now Obama who feeds these leeches. Hand out more Obama phones and ebt cards. Obama encourages this type of behavior which takes away from those that are willing to work and teaches the children of these useless leeches so that future generations will exhibit the same behavior. Of course these people came out in droves and voted for The Great Enabler, he's stealing from the backbone of a great nation and creating a welfare, lowlife ghetto culture. Another thing that will one day be written about in history books and joked at by history teachers will be that after a world changing event like 9/11 in which middle eastern Muslim extremists attacked our homeland, the moronic masses elect one of them with Hussein in his name to ruin and weaken their country from within. America's ignorant masses invited the devil to dinner.

I cannot wait for this argument.....we are going to see the GOP split in half........one side the crazy people who have no empathy for other individuals and would deport a sick, dying undocumented child...the other side slightly less crazy people who recognize that even though they'd like to deport the sick, dying undocumented child; politically it would be a disaster for them.

We will see the GOP eat its own over this one.

Not that the GOP REALLY cares about this...but making 'illegals' (as they refer to them) citizens, it actually reduces the deficit given the new revenues brought in to the treasury.

As a pretty strong Obama supporter: I DON'T support the democratic approach to immigration

Many of you supporters are "pie in the sky" visionaries about immigration but have no real clue what you're talking about or have no experience in dealing with the illegal problem we have.

I don't support immigration on financial grounds. The problem is not the one unskilled and uneducated worker coming to make a better wage but who decides to have a family of six or seven but will rarely if ever make more than minimum wage while here. His spouse being the same. You know who raises this family?? Me, you, and the people next door. Over 20 years the costs are substantial.

All of the state's who offer free illegal immigration services are in dire straits with their books as it is. Expect much higher taxes.

Immigration reform, like gun control, is no longer possible......at least not in any meaningful way. This is one of the many American issues that have been ignored for so long that viable solutions no longer exist. 12 million plus illegal immigrants? 280 million guns? How do you even begin to bring accountability into the equation when you are dealing with those types of numbers?

I agree both problems have been ignored far too long. It will be a lengthy process to reform both issues. Initiating reasonable gun laws will eventually improve matters, even if its 50 years from now. Same with immigration. We've got to take on these issues in my opinion.

You sound like an angry black man hang in there until 2043, at which time Latino's will become the majority and you will remain at 14%.!!!

Will you be more comfortable hating Latino's at that time???

Gary - You're on the losing side of this argument. No hate in me pal. Don't know what gave you that idea. Nor am I a black man. So you're way off guy. Reality is hard to deal with Gary, but you're going to have to live with it.
