Georgia Sen. Chambliss will not seek re-election

Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R, will not seek re-election in 2014, a Republican official told NBC News on Friday.

The two-term senator is the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee and has joined in some bipartisan efforts on fiscal issues, making him a prospective target for conservative primary challengers next year.

A number of Republican lawmakers in the state might now seek the Senate seat, and Democrats are vowing to play offense in the typically GOP-leaning state, too.

"Georgia will now offer Democrats one of our best pick-up opportunities of the cycle," said Guy Cecil, the executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

NBC's Michael O'Brien contributed.

The horror that this Republican Senator has actually talked with and worked with those evil Democrats! Having committed the ultimate sin, the gentleman from Georgia is hanging it up knowing that his Party will punish him if he seeks re-election.

And that's the way it is in the Republican Party of the Twenty-First Century.

The Lights have been out in Georgia for decades. I wouldn't expect the dimwits to have moved one inch towards a moderate center.

I've known some people from Georgia and I must disagree with your assessment. Just because someone doesn't think like you, it doesn't make them a "dimwit". A little more tolerance is what we need, not narrow minded people like you demeaning a whole state.

Very sad when politics has gone so far to the left/right that someone would be chastised by their party for wanting to make compromises. Compromise in politics means that someone is making the effort to do what is best for the country and it's people while putting the interest of their party on the back burner.

We need more people like Chambliss who are willing to do the right thing regardless of the consequences.

Let's hope we elect more people that stay away from the extreme left/right in the future.

"top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee"---kind of like being the tallest of the seven drawfs, isn't it?

Wow, a moderate Republican who reached across the aisle and he is attacked by both parties. I'd get out also. Unfortunately, it appears to be that way for the foreseeable future.

I agree with you nomoresameo, we need more people like this, who is willing to work, compromise and get the job done, but as you can see, he is attacked by extremist from both parties.

(Guys; Why the duplication?)

And Max Cleland smiles...

a Chambliss TV ad featuring the likenesses of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, while criticizing Cleland's votes against homeland security measures.[12] Cleland supporters claimed the ad questioned the senator's patriotism,[13] while Chambliss supporters claimed it simply questioned his judgment.[13][14] The ad was removed after protests from prominent politicians including Republicans such as John McCain and Chuck Hagel, both of whom are also veterans of the war in Vietnam.[15]
