Quote of the Day: Senator jokes about torturing Castros with Spring Break

“In fact I've often felt that if we want a real get-tough policy with the Castro brothers, we should force them to deal with Spring Break once or twice.”

-- Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake joking during the confirmation hearing for Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) to become Secretary of State.

Flake is an advocate of lifting the Cuba travel embargo.

His comment offended acting committee Chairman New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez (D), who is Cuban and very much against lifting the embargo. "To suggest that Spring Break is a form of torture to the Castro regime. Unfortunately, they are experts in torture," Menendez said.

Also at today's hearing:

Steve Benen, MSNBC:

For reasons that only seem to make sense to Johnson and conspiracy theorists, the far-right Wisconsinite remains preoccupied with preliminary intelligence reports from September that there were protests in Benghazi before the deadly violence erupted. Today, during John Kerry's confirmation hearing, Johnson wanted the Democrat to commit publicly to help him "find out what actually happened." Kerry explained that we already know what actually happened.

Kerry: Senator, in all fairness, we do know what happened. I think it is very clear. Were you at the briefing with the tapes?

Johnson: No.

Pat - you have to take an IQ test to run for certain seats in the Senate - especially the far-right seats. If you score too high - you fail. As you can see many Republicans have had no problem with passing the test!

In all fairness, the preliminary reports of intelligence concerning the Wisconsinite turned out to be completely wrong too... You'd think with his first-hand experience he'd be a little more understanding...

Really? We all do know what happened?

Apparently, Pat, you believe this.

So, tell the class, what was Obama's orders and why didn't the State Dept respond to the the repeated requests for more security?

What did the autopsy of Stevens conclude?

Why has no one been arrested (except for the ring leader aka "the film maker") or killed over the incident?

Why did it take nearly 6 weeks for the FBI to be sent to Benghazi? They were in Mali within 48 hours.

When will the survivors of Benghazi be allowed to talk to the press? Or Congress for that matter?

Was the Libyan security team paid off/intimidated/voluntarily to leave/left their charge?

Is Hillary so incompetent that she would not have read the intel concerning the hot spot known as Libya?

Tell us Pat. I can't find these answers anywhere. Someone should have stood up and gave her a raspberry for her poor acting and then called for her arrest on charges of incompetence leading to manslaughter. At the least.

    #1.8 - Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:20 PM EST

SimpleTheory - if you can't find those answers, you're incompetent because they are easy to find.

Oh, but hey let's all arrest Bush/Cheney/Rumsfield, Condi Rice for gross negligence and total incompetence!

JoAnne---one of the things I like about a Clinton/Castro ticket is that we could watch the folks on the right go nuts AGAIN over names. Like the whole "Hussein" thing that has entertained them for the past 6 years and meant nothing to the average American. They could go birther on Julian Castro and claim he was a distant relative of Fidel.

Torture Castro with Spring Break? Ohh, that's a good one Flakey. Priceless. Like that hilarious joke you made about how the National Science Foundation should only be allowed to research things that you and your fellow right wing politicians want them to. So funny, I couldn't stop laughing for days. Or that time he voted against education and job training for vets or Iraq and Afghanistan? Hooo-eeee, that was classic. Or when he pledged to serve no more than 3 terms in Congress...back in 2000? What a joker. What a comedian. What a maroon.

Sen. Flake could have expressed himself in a more appropriate manner, but the bottom line is that history has shown that the best thing for a repressive regime’s longevity is to become subject to economic and political sanctions by the US. North Korea, Cuba and Iran are examples. Libya is too, with the closer that it didn’t take too many years after lifting sanctions against Libya for the regime there to collapse.

I was tortured for almost 3 years by the FBI and their friends onlybecause 85 years old man, Roland, H Sibens(chicago)now he is 88, convinced them that Iam a terrorist. I was tortured for working on my prosthetic legs inthe basement. I done absolutely nothing illegal or wrong. They thoughtthat in theory it is possible to hide bomb in them. They saw anopportunity to get famous, so they were trying to torture me till Isign their insane story. They tortured me using more than 100different torturing methods and trust to me waterboarding is not howthey torture nowadays. I dont know where to find justice.
I think that after 9/11 things got out of control. Freedom fightersbecame tyrants. In 1945, most Germans had an opportunity to learn about Nazis deathcamps. I hope that one day American citizens will get chance to learn about peoplelike me, who were tortured with no reason for years.
