Obama nominates prosecutor to head SEC: 'You don't mess with Mary Jo'

Seeking to fill two of his administration’s most powerful financial regulatory posts, President Obama announced his nomination of former prosecutor Mary Jo White to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission and re-nomination of Richard Cordray as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

White, who spent nearly a decade as Manhattan’s U.S. attorney, is expected to bring regulatory heft to the SEC, whose mission is to “protect investors [and] maintain fair, orderly and efficient markets.”

President Obama introduces Mary Jo White as his choice to head the SEC and re-nominated Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

As the first prosecutor nominated to the post, White is seen by the Obama administration as someone who can forcefully implement President Obama’s Wall Street-reform plan.

"You don't want to mess with Mary Jo," President Obama said of White during his announcement Thursday. "As one former SEC chairman said, 'Mary Jo does not intimidate easily."

Not only did she win hundreds of millions of dollars in white-collar crime cases, she successfully convicted the masterminds behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and indicted Osama bin Laden for the 1998 bombing of two embassies in Africa.

Underscoring her wide portfolio, she was also the lead prosecutor on the team that convicted mob boss John Gotti of murder and racketeering.

Appointed to her post by President Bill Clinton in 1993, she later was pegged to investigate Clinton’s 177 pardons and commutations he granted during his presidency. She began the investigation as her office began the probe into billionaire Marc Rich, the recipient of Clinton’s most controversial pardon.

Cordray, the former attorney general of Ohio, took the CFPB post in a January 2012 recess appointment, which drew the ire of Senate Republicans who had placed a hold on Cordray’s nomination. At the time, some senators made clear that their resistance to his nomination had more to do with their desire to make changes to the CFPB than it did personal dislike of Cordray.

The former Attorney General of Ohio, Cordray lost his 2010 re-election bid to Republican Mike DeWine, but said at the time that he would soon re-enter politics, telling the New York Times at the time that “I do expect to be running for office in the next cycle.”

He is seen by many Ohio Democrats as a top 2014 Senate or gubernatorial candidate.

She doesn't sound like she's spent enough time throwing parties in Stepford to suit the likes of any self-flagellating respecting republican!

I hope she doesn't roll her eyes when boehner slurs opens his his pie-hole...

Meanwhile, yesterday Rand Paul said "If I were President of the United States..." If that doesn't deserve an "Eye-rolly-Gate" tribunal nothing does!!

I've heard that the next episode of "Monsters inside me" is going to detail the parasite/host relationship between the republican party and its remaining constituencies... Just a rumor at this point.

SEC chair - this is a regulator's job. If White spent nearly a decade as Manhattan's U.S. attorney, that's a good credential, better than someone from the Wall Street.

But even a member of Wall Street, as long as there is determination, can still be effective, such as Joseph Kennedy, the Kennedy patriarch, a successful Wall Street investor who did just fine as the first chairman of SEC. But when Kennedy was appointed, the initial reaction was then that how a fox could guard the hen-house. Again, Kennedy did an excellent job.

The SEC began with Joseph Kennedy (sr.) setting the standard for the agency. FDR chose Kennedy as a leading financier who knew, from experience, exactly what rules were bent and how people were making their money, legally, but not fairly for most investors.

Up until the late 1990's, the SEC, along with the CFTC (which regulate commodities and futures) were very strong watchdogs against Wall Street abuses.

In 1999, the Republicans pushed through changes which effectively gutted the CFTC and then the Bush Administration severely underfunded both agencies. Following the collapse of Enron two years later, the SEC proposed and got the requirements under Sarbannes-Oxley, which mainly do nothing to prevent the types of losses that have taken place since, but do put blame firmly onto the executive level and cover the auditors failures.

The underfunding and lack of investigations by the SEC were a part of the general lack of oversight of Wall Street which led to the financial collapse. Unfortunately, the single largest component of the causes, unregulated financial derivatives, are still unregulated. Also, the tie in of commercial banking with investment banking still has not been corrected.

There will be another meltdown in the financial industry, it is only a matter of time since the essential systemic problems have not been corrected.

Libs R Us (located at www.LibsRUs.newsvine.com) need windows 7 to read
Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL (Jun 18, 6:22 PM): WTF!!!!
While searching the Roselle website, I ran across an interesting series of posts from the Feisty Redhead that I found interesting: a newsvine.com site called Libs R Us, where a number of posters, including Mark from MSNBC regularly get together to plan their strategy. Page 383 outlines a strategy for having the President visit Feisty so they can denounce later the opposition. Feisty even told her ally that she would run the ruse by Mark to get his approval. (my site post to Clara – Congressperson???)
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Amy B. Portland, ME (Jun 18, 6:28 PM): Holy @!$%#.
Amy B. Portland, ME (Jun 18, 6:42 PM): On my list of groups I see a lock on DDI, but not on LibsRUs. Is this group public?
Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL (Jun 18, 6:48 PM): Me too Amy - I also logged out & went googled myself, once there libs r us does come up BUT I couldn't see any discussion
It appears I was hacked and I have NO idea how since I'm using Webroot security
I got to run - right now I'm thinking this had to be a inside job somehow.... Why did they post Navy and not what I wrote above it...
This is some SCARY @!$%#!
Be back asap!
Amy B. Portland, ME (Jun 18, 6:54 PM): did you check the groups private/public button to make sure its clicked on private? Seems like a simpler explanation than hacking. I don't think I've ever seen a lock next to LibsRUs on my homepage, but DDI has always had a lock.
Dennis, Columbus, Ohio (Jun 18, 7:04 PM): >Feisty, ALL,
I checked pot doublea1 Friday. It appears he/she just joined on the 15th. I saw a comment that I thought showed he/she knew too much for a new user. Do you remember who it was that threatened to give out your personal information?
** I reported this to Newsvine as a security breech – I suggest that everyone in our group does the same. Those that have contact with Mark please contact him.
We have been hacked!!
Until we get this resolved watch what we say.
>Amy you must be a member of this group and logged in to Newsvine to see the discussion.
Amy B. Portland, ME (Jun 18, 7:10 PM): how come the DDI listing has a lock next to it and not LibsRUs on my homepage? Also, it says group type: public on this page, upper left next to the dew drop inn sign?
Dennis, Columbus, Ohio (Jun 18, 7:19 PM): >Amy,
It was initially opened as Public where DDI was opened as Private. Once opened the type cannot be changed.
The only difference I know is that with the DDI you cannot view anything where he anyone can view everything except the conversation.
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 8:58 PM): What, have we been hacked?? This is not good. What did they post of mind??
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 9:04 PM): I just put that up today at 4:00PM. This is not good at all. We are going to have some serious problems come Monday, just watch and see.
Who is that clown that posted this? He should immediately be disbarded and anybody putting up info on us from our site needs to be disbarded as well.
Maybe we should close this site down ASAP and create a new??????
newdayDAWNING10 (Jun 18, 9:08 PM): I do think we should open a new chat
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 9:11 PM): NDD: I just went and saw it. I am pissed, god only knows what else they got. I just fired this off to FR. This is bad, real bad.
It has come to my attention that our Newsvine site Libs R us has been hacked. One of my internal posts to this private group has been posted on FR today June 18, 2011.
This is wrong and the person that posted should be banned as they had no right to break into our private site and thy did not have any permission to do this.
This is a major security breach and puts about 30+ dedicated FR posters at risk and this has to be addressed immediately.
newdayDAWNING10 (Jun 18, 9:15 PM): Navy: I have been thinking about this: We have never hidden that we are a group. You would have to be foolish to think we don't talk strategy. It is not a secret that we don't like no jo, and she doesn't like us. If you read the response from the one guy who read it he said "so". Look, it has to be fixed, but I wouldn't be too upset about it.
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 9:17 PM): I pray to God this is not an inside job. Some people will stoop to anything to try and win. And if you as listening you can print this one as well you prick.
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 9:18 PM): NDD: I know and I will be prepard, but this just demonstrates how low some people will go.
newdayDAWNING10 (Jun 18, 9:21 PM): It will be fine Navy: meet over at DDI, we can chat there.
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 9:22 PM): On my way
Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL (Jun 18, 9:41 PM): Full disclosure...
I can't be of any help tonight - I've had 3 glasses of wine - I WILL BE THERE TOMORROW to assist! This IS not good at all...
Until then - have a good night for what that's worth!
THIS BLOWS!
US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired (Jun 18, 10:00 PM): Talk with you all tomorrow to see what our next step should be. Probally should send by e-mail since this site is not secure any longer.
Ron Indiana (Jun 18, 10:33 PM): Perhaps until we get to the bottom of this, we should communicate by email.
Ron Indiana (Jun 18, 10:40 PM): Second thought: We have talked a lot about goint to St.L. and that Mark would be joining us. I do not want to compromise his work. Perhaps he sould be told that we have been hacked?
John B, Des Moines, IA (Jun 18, 10:54 PM): I think I need to write about Clarence Thomas on Monday.
Gingerbread Mamma (Jun 18, 11:26 PM): I think you should too Johnb, when I saw that piece a little while ago, I wished I had time to write on this hypocrit and his wife. The two of them are wandering down the road of conflict for some time now and have become quite bold in their efforts, he doesn't talk and she talks too much. they have got away with no paying large amounts of taxes for several years and only paid when called on it. He is nothing but a well paid stooge for the right wing.

Yes there is more but NOTHING new that wasn’t posted over 2½ years ago

Let's see, 2 1/2 years ago. A year and a half into Obama's presidency. I think they saw they got duped and needed to "rally the troops" to stop any exposure of the inexperienced one by displaying a unanimous and undying adoration and love for him.

That's all it was. Justifying in their own minds that they and their party made the right choice over Hillary. Now, Obama is in his last days and you can see daily how they are all jumping on her bus instead of letting it pass........in the front seats of course.

Everyone leaves "fingerprints" in the way they write and express themselves. (Witness Lil Michelle's "get's" and "verbage", which you haven't seen anyone else use.) For one person to write consistently in many, many different voices, and then to remember all the various "fingerprints" specific to the character they're impersonating, would require that the writer be exceptionally talented.

So, if there is indeed one person playing all these different roles, my hat goes off to her or him! You deserve literature's highest prize.

The fact that our President speaks well is confusing to you. I totally understand that after George Bush who couldn't even read the teleprompter well. But, we are lucky to have a great President who is also articulate and can think on his feet. I know for Republicans that is a strange concept.

Another women great. I wonder if she is paid less than the men in the administration as well.

Guess what, women in the Republicans Party make EVEN LESS than their Democratic counterparts so what does that say about the REPUBLICANS?

President Barack Obama violated the Constitution when he bypassed the Senate to fill vacancies on a labor relations panel, a federal appeals court panel ruled Friday.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said that Obama did not have the power to make three recess appointments last year to the National Labor Relations Board.

The unanimous decision is an embarrassing setback for the president, who made the appointments after Senate Republicans spent months blocking his choices for an agency they contended was biased in favor of unions. Where is this on nbc?

Obama has a history of picking very strong-minded women. Whether or not you agree with their politics is irrelevant. The fact that Obama chooses strong women (not just figure heads) shows a level of confidence that started, I believe, with his choice of spouse.

What I find so funny about all these posts it that the right is trying to support the lies of the Republicans and the left is trying to support the lies of the Democrats. Until everyone on these board and other boards are willing to be just as hard on their own party as they are on the other party nothing will ever change in Washington. Washington knows that if they keep the American population arguing against each other that they will be able to get away with any and everything.

We the people are allowing ourselves to be lied to by both sides. And we try and support those lies. No one wants to step up and call everyone in Washington a liar. Which they all are.

Until we all start holding everyone in Washington accountable nothing will change. Until we all start telling the side we support to come clean nothing will change. Until we all start telling the side we support to stop playing politics with our lives nothing will change.

Call me names, try and defend your position. The sad fact is all of you know you can lie to everyone else but you cannot lie to yourself. Look at what you are supporting. Look at the big picture. Then ask yourself how long will you allow the lies from both sides the ruin the lives of all Americans.

I too am guilty of what I just wrote. However as of yesterday, before I post anything on any of these boards the first thing I do is send an email to my U.S. Senators and Representative. I don't care if they are Republican or Democrat. I want them to know how I feels about all the B/S coming out of Washington. I also send emails to the President and Vice-President. I don't use some of those sites that send emails for you. I want all of them to know that I as individual can speak for myself. I want all of them to know what I as an individual want them to do. And I plan to send them all emails daily. I want them to know I will find to time in my life to let them know daily what I think.

I don't need AARP to speak for me which I am a member. I don't need the NRA to speak for me which I am a member. I don't need NCOA to speak for me which I am a member. I don't need Oathkeepers to speak for which I am a member. And I can continue. Each and every one of you on these boards need to do the same. If Washington starts getting emails daily from the American people things will change. Coming voting time if everyone stops believing that their vote don't count and go vote things will change. Let's get rid of the electoral college. Let's let the people votes mean something.

So to everyone posting unless you are doing the same, then your comments on these boards will result in nothing changing in Washington. Your name calling and rants will not change anything. It might make you feel good but it will not change a thing.

I want both side to stop showing us how well they can twist the words of the English language to hide the facts. Put the facts out and I mean all the facts not just what supports their agenda.

I want a standalone amendment to the Constitution that make it the law that Congress and the Presidents pay is voted on by the people. They should not be able to give themselves pay raises when neither side is getting anything done. The proposal that only side not get paid is B/S. Neither the House, Senate and President gets paid if there is not budget.

Last but not least, everyone needs to understand that according to the Constitution, which a lot of posters want use to support their positions, the House is task with coming up with a budget. They must be willing to compromise with the Senate and the President in order to get one put in place. And so must the Senate and the President be will to compromise. This our way or no way is not helping the American people. Compromise is not a bad thing.

You would like my new senator, Angus King. He's an Independent, and a reasonable, pragmatic kind of guy. Unfortunately, though he started out with a 70% approval rating, as our former governor, after a massive advertising campaign against him paid for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Karl Rove, he won with only 55% of the vote. It was pretty painful watching a man you know and like be the target of attack ads, morning, noon and night.

Basically, as long as special interests with boatloads of money play in politics, it's an uphill climb for us informed voters. I think that is why you see such intense partisanship. We are fighting against a well-funded machine.

I can't believe how derogatory the left is to women who are on the right. If the right is so anti-women one would have to be pretty tough to make it through those ranks. To be a women on the left doesn't require strength, it only requires compliance.

Dick Durbin admitted in 2009 that the banks "Own the Place". Harvard Law Professor Larry Lessig said to weeks ago "we live in a world were the architects of the financial crisis regularly dine at the White House".

The rest of the world suffers the consequences of the great recession while DC politicians line their pockets with Wall Street money. Wall Street always wins and they are more powerful than ever.

Wall Street is infested with "unethical" people.

These are people who can be called legal crooks. What they do is not necessarily criminal, but many would call it unethical.

That line between criminal and unethical often has been blurry. SEC has been run by people in bed with Wall Street f*cks way too long.

We needed somebody with balls; And we got it.. almost.

With tough, fair people like Mary Jo running SEC, scumbags like Madoff and similar manure will not have space to live TEN FREAKING YEARS.

Did you know how SEC did investigate Madoff in 2002 after a complain?

They sent in two morons to investigate Madoff. They asked Madoff how he managed to make gains where everybody is F*cked in 1999, 2000, 2001 etc. Madoff said because he was good. End of the investigation!

GS CEO Blankenfaint clown cannot short our funds that himself recommended us to buy!

The question is what percentage of Wall street is dishonest, greedy, unethical scumbags and what percentage is straight criminal.

      Go Mary Jo.
