The Kerry confirmation hearing is a "snooze-fest" compared to the *fireworks* Hillary provided yesterday!
Any long time reader of FR knows I was brutal on Hillary during the 2008 primary. I always believed she stayed with Bill for the name recognition and his coat tails.
Having said that, this woman has gone above and beyond to earn my respect & full support in 2016!
There isn't a pale faced male in the pack of Repug's who stand a chance against her!
Hilary looked much more relaxed this morning. I cannot imagine being in front of such a clearly hostile group of Republicans and not get much more animated and frustrated than Hilary. She only further proved that she was the most excellent choice for SOS. She held her ground, and showed the American people that she would be a most excellent president of the U.S., should she decide to run. The clear agenda for the Republicans at her hearing yesterday was not to get answers to Benghazi, but to do their very best at discrediting Hilary because of the absolute fear they have in the possibility of her being the Democratic nominee for president. Fortunately, they failed miserably.
You are so much the poster child for the Republican party. You zero in on a word? Semantics. How incredibly short sighted you and the rest of that party has become.
Hillary did a lot to deflect as did some members of the committee. Maybe these hearings should not be held in open hearing because members of the committee are only interested in getting a few minutes of national TV exposure. Nothing really came out of the hearing that wasn't already known.
There was two answers that I took offense with, the first was when Hillary raised her voice and said something along the line "what difference does it make if someone walking down the street decided they wanted to kill Americans or if it was a coordinated attack". My reply is "it makes a lot of difference when our government purposely lies to the American people."
The 2d was when Hillary stated something along the lines "I knew within 24 hours that this was a terrorist attack". If she knew, why did she not correct the statements Susan Rice said on TV. Further, she told the father of one of the casualties something like "we are going to see that the person responsible for the Video goes to jail."
Hell, Hillary can't take control over her bladder function ... and she certainly did not "control" the ongoing dangerous situation in Benghazi before it happened, even when multiple opportunities and requests for beefed-up security were being screamed at her !
But then, of course, we have the demmie libs who will try to distract from the reality of a coordinated "campaign of misinformation" and failed causality that followed the attacks. Why did Susan Rice spread the fairy tale of causality ? Why did Obama stand before the U.N. and also give misleading statements ?? Why did Hillary as well ? Why was a simple statement of the truth simply not released .... "AL QAEDA is alive and well", and NO , they are not on the run as Obama had declared !
The coverup and distortions were simply done because the election was near and the truth might have damaged Obama.
I remember a time when Teddy Kennedy was testifying in the Kennedy cousin murder trial. He was absolutely stately and took over. Yesterday Hillary proved to be just as stately and did take control of the testimony. I think I am going to have a hard time choosing between Joe Biden and Hillary in 2016. I like both and would be happy with either as our next president.
You do realize, do you not, that the terminology "Weapons of Mass Destruction" started with Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright ... long before Bush was elected ? Are you saying Slick Willie lied again ??
Google it genius ... then explain if you can.
Teddy Kennedy was a drunk, kicked out of Harvard for cheating and caused Kopechne's death.
Feisty---in 2007 and 2008 I supported then-Senator Obama but came to see Hillary Clinton as a strong candidate in her own right. Had she won the nomination I would have voted for her and wored for her election but partly because of her opponent---McCain/Palin---still makes me shudder. After observing her on the international stage for four years, if she would run in 2016 I would support her as strongly as I supported the President--with my time, financial resources and my vote.
What I find amusing, no offense Mark Murray, is the idea that Hillary Clinton's honeymoon with republicans ever existed let alone is now over. Seriously, the only reason there was a pretense of honeymoon in the first place was the fact she wasn't running for office. They were glad to see her leave the Senate; they figured she was done with politics. Now the GOPers see her as a big threat in 2016. Benghazi has nothing to do with it; the GOPTPdoesn't want the truth or answers, they want blood. And the GOPTPers are too cowardly to take on President Obama so they go after the women involved either indirectly or directly, Susan Rice and Hillary Clinton. The GOPTP's behavior toward both is chauvinism at its worst.
sfcret, if you're going to go down that road, at least get the quote correctly. "What difference does it make, AT THIS POINT".....meaning arguing about whether a video prompted the attack or ??? is not productive. She went on to say that the focus should be on determining how to fix it so as to prevent another tragedy in the future. You folks on the right are entitled to your opinion regarding the testimony but the least you can do is take the full testimony in context and stop cherry-picking words to make it sound as if Mrs. Clinton didn't care.
You do realize, do you not, that the terminology "Weapons of Mass Destruction" started with Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright ... long before Bush was elected ? Are you saying Slick Willie lied again ??
What are you talking about? The terminology, or the actual invasion (on false premises) of a sovereign country)
Google it genius ... then explain if you can.
You first.....then explain the Clinton invasion of Iraq....if you can!
Hahahaha, Rand Paul -- He's such a turkey. His "gun running" question was based on Glenn Beck's chalkboard conspiracy crap. We have got to get ignoramuses like him out of leadership in this country!
But seriously, did one single Teapublican ask about bringing the terrorists to justice? How about the rightwing lemmings posting in this forum?
And these Teapublicans they ran out to the talk shows to try to prop up their idiocy. They only care about Party and it's so pitifully transparent.
It is evident that Hillary screwed up big time and let the U.S. down ! Only an extreme lefty would consider that as "experience" worthy of a promotion.
Oh, johnny boy ... I kept forgetting that "Demonstrated Incompetence" is considered a virtue in your party. That is why morons like Janey Incompetano and Eric Holdin Back the Truth Holder still have high positions in this administration.
hell jim you can't even get their names right and you call them incompetent. You ain't smart enough, nor have the education to call names like that. Maybe you should shut up and listen, you might learn something.
Want to talk incompetence we will have to talk to about W., now that was incompetence.
Yesterday's hearing only proved once and for all that Senate Republicans are far more fascinated by what happened in Washington than what happened in Benghazi.
rand paul certainly made a fool of himself and from his reaction and the others there is certainly a war going on and hillary set them straight like the little boys they are and will ever be.
You have to give Hillary credit, when Rand said "If I'd have been president...."---she didn't burst out laughing nor did she say as I did while watching "God forbid!!!"
I had to spot clean my carpet of the coffee that literally spewed out of my mouth when he uttered those ridiculous, and now infamous words, 'If I were president.....' Yeah, right, tea banger, never ever ever ever gonna happen!
Why is that so far-fetched ? The U.S. has elected not once, but twice a community organizer who has racked up massive trillions in additional debt ($5.7 trillion) with never a budget, divided the country and who has ignored the Constitution whenever he felt it convenient !
$16.5 trillion in debt and counting ! How high does it get before the U.S. gets a second credit downgrade ?
Sueb, had similar thought about Hillary not bursting out laughing. My immediate thought was--as if she'd ever consider working for a nut like you?!
Johntho, yes, she did show restraint, and the right temperament; I applaud her for that; she did a great job. BTW, nice job taking on jim#'s.
Since we're reminiscing about 2008 and talking about the possibility of Hillary Clinton running in 2016, my own view back in 2008 was that Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton was too much for me. However much I liked Bill Clinton, I was very tired of the non-stop Clinton drama even if much of it was pushed onto them by the GOP. That's not to say that I did not think Hillary Clinton was qualified to be President; she's one smart lady who does her homework, and digs for all the details but the idea of family dynasties turned me off completely--fairly or unfairly, that was my thinking. IL State Senator Barack Obama's 2004 keynote address at the Democratic Convention had caught my attention. I saw something in him I had not seen since JFK (before I could vote) and RFK who would have been my first vote for President. I researched Obama the next few years, read his books and pretty much had decided that IF he ran in 2008, I would likely back him. And I did because as much as I liked Joe Biden (my second choice), Bill Richardson, Hillary Clinton (no, I never considered Edwards), Obama inspired me as no one had in years. He still does.
As for 2016, I prefer to wait a couple years before really even thinking much about it. Even though I know MSNBC and FR is the place for politics and the next election is always a hot topic, it hasn't been four full days since President Obama was sworn in for a second term so I'd really like to enjoy his presidency before tackling the notion of 2016. That said, President Obama has given both his formal presidential rivals great gifts for whatever they choose to try next: one is a fantastic Vice President and one is finishing a fantastic four-years as Secretary of State.
In your world, I would imagine a President Rand Paul isn't far fetched.
But tell me, isn't America a community? And as such, shouldn't it be organized? Don't you think that THE PEOPLE have a right to determine who will represent their interests? Because to my way of thinking, that is what WE, THE PEOPLE did when we acted as a nation to cast our votes for the individual that we thought would and could organize and lead us (THE PEOPLE) to a better place.
It's a democracy, Jim. You did your patriotic duty and voted for the guy you thought would best lead. He lost. Now it is time for you and others to start acting like a member of our community and honor the traditions of our republic. As you've pointed out; your countrymen have spoken. Now it is time for you to hear and respect their words.
Campdog, and others: It is obvious by jim's comments today and his overuse of exclamation points in his comments that the man is beginning to unravel. His comments are rambling and filled with nonsense. Let's face it, he can't even tell the truth about Obama's spending, which since he took office has been on a downward trend, whereas his predecessor's spending was up, up and away, out of control. Per the graph I saw lastnight, the Bushman's spending equated to $3,360 PER Person in this country. Under president Obama it is roughly $870. PER Person and trending down.
John McCain doing his John McCain thing; bashing the President, trying to get us into another war, yelling at clouds. He needs to retire because he's a crazy old coot.
It was a tour de force valedictory before her former colleagues in the Senate.
Hillary will take several months off, rest, recuperate, write a book, do the talk shows to promote the book.
Sometime in 2014, her country will call on her to be a special envoy or negotiate some agreement, and she will answer the call.
In January of 2015, the "will she or won't she?" media circus will begin in earnest.
In February of 2015, there will be a cocktail party/fundraiser in an apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where I hope to share a laugh ( and probably a "highball") with the next President of these United States.
in an apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where I hope to share a laugh ( and probably a "highball") with the next President of these United States.
Dangerfield you certainly have high hopes, good for you. I have only been to NYC once thoroughly enjoyed all the plebian and common tourist sights. Can't say I made it up to the west side.
If I ever found myself in that neck of the woods, I fear the patricians would try to run me out as if I were an extra in the movie "The Warriors."
Senator Ron Johnson's political posturing brought an angry, logical outburst from Hillary Clinton. Assaults on embassies will always exist, even though the reasons behind them vary greatly. Thus focusing on reasons for the Benghazi Embassy assault is a complete waste of energy.
The next assault on a US Embassy, and there will be a next assault, will be in a different country for different reasons. Hillary was trying to introduce Senator Johnson to that fundamental logic. The only constant that these hearings can and should address is the continuing improvement to the defenses to better repel any assault in any country. That constant is within the control of the United States, and the reasons for any assault are not. The reasons are in a constant state of flux at the whim of foreigners.
MichaelMcManus, well said. Congress might start by addressing their $300 million in cuts to the Dept of State security budget, and then passing the funding requests for embassy security made both prior to Benghazi and after Benghazi.
chilled, that was a good one this morning! Senator Kerry had previously reminded the GOPer whiners in Congress that they shared blame for cutting State's budget and refusing to provide the additional monies requested even before Benghazi occurred.
The truth is, they could've done the hearing without Secretary Clinton present because they weren't interested in anything she had to say...they just wanted to grandstand. A lot of political theater that only impresses the actors, not the public.
The truth is, they could've done the hearing without Secretary Clinton present because they weren't interested in anything she had to say...they just wanted to grandstand.
and give Fox as many talking points as possible . . . as for their grandstanding gestures, I'm sure all of the comedians are appreciating them.
Couldn’t agree more! Almost every question that related to Benghazi (too many did not) had already been asked many times. On top of that this was an open hearing that didn’t allow any confidential reports to be discussed. They had secure briefings on several occasions thus as you point out this was all for show, grandstanding.
It was used to allow the perpetrators to fell they were not being pursued so we had a better chance to capture them.
No matter who says what, there are those that will accuse them [Obama Administration] of not telling the truth unless it matches what they (YOU) believe. They are called “TRUTHERS” !!
"It was used to allow the perpetrators to fell they were not being pursued so we had a better chance to capture them." Only in the minds of those on the left and to deflect from the truth. How many of the perpetrators have been captured, (I believe there was one captured in Tunisia and then released.) How was it that a reporter from Reuthers (?) could track down the leader drinking tea in an open air restaurant but the FBI & CIA couldn't? Why was a reporter able to find the Ambassadors diary and other papers about 2 -3 weeks after the attack but the FBI couldn't? IMO, this coverup had nothing to do with security but everything to do with the election.
Thanks! This is no different than those who believe that the attacks on 9/11/01 were somehow supported by President Bush, his Administration or the Federal Government or that the Sandy Hook murders were faked. There are always people that the truth is more difficult to believe than some conspiracy theory or cover-up.
Maybe they should use Rodham-Clinton, instead of "Hillary" to help distinguish the SOS from the former President. Maybe I will start doing that too. Good point.
Dangerfield, I agree with you to a certain degree, but it is common practice for interviewers to address a woman by her first name rather than title and surname. Ed Schultz did it the other night with Secretary Solis and it happens all the time to Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
Are there only MALE interviewers? I only watch PBS, Washington Week, and the McLaughlin Group, so I don't claim to know what they do on CNN etc. but there are certainly as many female reporters/talking heads as male, so the question would be more is it a perceived EDITORIAL policy to do so?
In defense of this one anyway;
Would you rather have to say " representative Wasserman Schultz" a dozen times in an interview, or "Debbie"?...:-)
I would personally always go with whatever was easier to pronounce, like that legendary NEWSMAN, Ted Baxter...
I think sometimes it is too easy to get caught up in little things. Ursula pointed out something I had not noticed today and, while I see the point and appreciate it, I really doubt that the FR writers did it on purpose or even realized they did it. Glad Ursula pointed it out to them; maybe they will remember next time.
That said, I began my working career in an era when there were no harassment laws, when women were treated with total disrespect, subjected to foul and often suggestive language or offered a raise (yes, me) for sexual favors (to which I responded I'd rather starve), hence no raise but I still had my integrity. I remember being passed over for promotions because I was female even though I was equally qualified; being put to a different standard for promotions and receiving lower pay for the same positions as my male counterparts; fighting for the same Manager and Director titles as other males running departments had; being told I needed a certain college degree when my male counterparts did not. The list could go on; I could fill a couple pages with the disrespect and sexual discrimination I was subjected to and saw happening to others. Two instances were in job interviews so even an interview was often distasteful.
Perhaps that is why I am less inclined to notice calling her Hillary, who as dangerfield pointed out ran as Hillary, and referring to John Kerry as Kerry or by the FR headlines today. I don't like disrespect shown to either females or males; it should have been Secretary Clinton and Senator Kerry..... As for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, it's a mouth full even in type but she deserves the same level of respect as given her male counterparts and the reverse would be true as well. It annoys me that Chuck T and others in the media refer to our President as Mr. Obama instead of President Obama.
The Republicans were trying to do a Hatchet Job on Hilliary and embarrass the Obama Administration in the process. Well it looks like, other than their Propaganda Machine, Fox, Rush and all of the rest of CABAL of Liars and Damn Liars, Hilliary handed them their own heads on a PLATTER in addition to Kicking their Butts.
The GOP/BAGGERS seem to never let a non-issue pass them buy to make all about NOTHING and it ends of kicking them in the Butt.
When will the Real Republican Party STOP all of this NONSENSE, stop kicking the Can down the Road on our Economy truly Recovering trying to make a Popular President Look Bad with all of this SCORCHED EARTH MENTALITY. They are Killing the Country. The BUSINESS COMMUNITY KNOW IT BETTER THAN ANYONE. I am waiting for them to put a STAKE in the Party that use to be called Republicans.
Even, the Democrats are Still trying to be Reasonable with them although GOP/TEA get in front of the Press and lie about it. Because everyone knows that if the Republicans had the Presidency and the Senate, they would not GIVE A DAMN ABOUT what the Minority Party had to say or the the PEOPLE. They would RAM THROUGH EVERYTHING THAT FAVORS THEM STAYING IN POWER whether it was good for the Country or NOT.
Look at the Moves and Cheating Now of the Electorate with Re-Redistricting, Gerrymandering, Voter Suppression, changing the ELECTORIAL COLLEGE to Keep that Power, by STATE HOUSES DOMINATED BY REPUBLICANS taking Democracy totally out of the hands of the Voters not loyal to Republicans. They tried to Purchase the Election in 2012, that did not totally work so we will put it new RESTRICTIONS.
Sec. Clinton has been around the block a time or two. When this tragedy went down, she knew full well it would lead to an appearance in front of Congress. And I will say that I admired the way she handled it, I've always been a big supporter of hers.
But I don't want anyone to mislead me or feed me mushroom food, especially someone I trust, I've seen way too much of that in my lifetime. And I don't think she or this administration have done that. Certainly not to the level witnessed in the run up to Iraq.
The Republicans, with their snide remarks and false bravado, will end up looking even worse than they do now.
The Secretary Of State made it clear that the GOP/Teabeggers are reactionary, intellectually challenged, and behaviorally disturbed. She was clear when speaking, and intellectual in her thoughts. The Secretary Of State takes her very seriously, and she has done her research. She is able to read with comprehension, and is able to think issues with completion. The GOP/Teabeggers do not understand or comprehend these skills. The GOP/Teabeggers obviously do not understand facts, and have no clue of what reality is. Again!
The Kerry confirmation hearing is a "snooze-fest" compared to the *fireworks* Hillary provided yesterday!

Performance?
Interesting choice of words.
Actually, it was supposed to be testimony, not acting.
Which it was.
You are so much the poster child for the Republican party. You zero in on a word? Semantics. How incredibly short sighted you and the rest of that party has become.
So by all accounts, Fisty has seen that Hillary has "evolved". Now she is the best thing since sliced bread AND bottled beer combined.
Hillary did not just hold her ground; she took control. Will she look that cool on cut and paste Faux News?
Will enough voters be fooled by right wing propaganda?
Hillary 2016

If she wants the presidency in 2016, as far as I am concerned, it's Hillary's.
Usually, we have to gamble that a candidate has the experience and temperament to do the job, but in Hillary Clinton's case, it's evident she does.
It is evident that Hillary screwed up big time and let the U.S. down ! Only an extreme lefty would consider that as "experience" worthy of a promotion.

Rand Paul gets my vote as winner in the TeaPeople "Clown Competition" that was staged yesterday!
If my Grampa were alive today to see Rand, he would say; "Something ain't right with that boy"... lol
What do Michelle Bachmann, Scott Walker, Sharon Engle, Rand Paul, Jim Demint, Paul Ryan, Sarah Palin all have in common?
These tea baggers all have the same physical characteristics, glazed over look in the eyes, slow speech and white!

I merely jest my fine Yankee fellow.
Mark-
I've been a fundraiser for Hillary since her first senate campaign..That apartment is mine, and the high hopes are for the future of the Country...
If you ever found yourself on the UWS...I would be happy to buy you a drink...before we of course ran you out like an extra from "The Warriors"...;-)
(I actually WAS an extra in the movie "Dog Day Afternoon" which was filmed in my childhood neighborhood in south Brooklyn.)
Johnson tried to revisit the issue with Kerry who just promptly told him something like "There is no daylight between me and Sec Clinton"!
Bam!
Hillary said nothing of substance. She had plenty of time to "get her story straight".
Who created the excuse of "spontaneous demonstrations that got out of hand" ?
Ursula . . .
and give Fox as many talking points as possible . . . as for their grandstanding gestures, I'm sure all of the comedians are appreciating them.
Ursula,
Couldn’t agree more! Almost every question that related to Benghazi (too many did not) had already been asked many times. On top of that this was an open hearing that didn’t allow any confidential reports to be
discussed. They had secure briefings on several occasions thus as you point out this was all for show, grandstanding.
Questions asked does not equate to questions adequately answered !
Why was the fairy tale of blame on "spontaneous demonstrations that got out of hand" created and by whom ?
Jim,
This was answered back in mid to late October …
IMO, this coverup had nothing to do with security but everything to do with the election.
jim, the GOPers asked her nothing of substance but she provided a great deal of substance in return for their lack of it.
Dennis, well done! Too bad the republicans here aren't any more interested in the truth that the ones in Congress were yesterday.
Jody,
Thanks! This is no different than those who believe that the attacks on 9/11/01 were somehow supported by President Bush, his Administration or the Federal Government or that the Sandy Hook murders were faked. There are always people that the truth is more difficult to believe than some conspiracy theory or cover-up.
By the way, First Read, notice anything peculiar about today’s headlines?
Your misogyny is showing….
Ursula,
Maybe they should use Rodham-Clinton, instead of "Hillary" to help distinguish the SOS from the former President. Maybe I will start doing that too. Good point.
"Hillary" is like "Madonna", or "Arnold", or "Cher" , or Ichiro", or a hundred other world celebrities, like "BiBi"
or "Kate"...
It isn't misogynistic , it's reaching the point in the popular culture when you are known by a single name, like "Oprah"
Hillary herself took the appellation of just her 1st name for her first senate run....
In defense of this one anyway;
Again!
