The AP previews Obama’s inaugural speech today. “President Barack Obama has prepared a second inaugural address that broadly lays out his vision for the country's future, setting the stage for looming debates over taxes, guns, immigration and other issues while leaving the details for another day. The speech, slated right after Obama takes an oath to ‘faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States’ Monday on the Capitol's west front, includes no new policy, aides say. Rather, the president plans to use the moment as it traditionally has been in most of the 56 previous inaugurations — to talk about founding American values and their importance to the country's success today.”
More: “Inaugural addresses are not typically partisan, and White House aides say Obama doesn't intend to call out his political opponents. But they say he will stand up for his values and vision that were supported by the majority of voters in the November election. Obama's prepared text notes that spirited debate is a hallmark of a vibrant democracy, aides say, but that the country's leaders can't let disagreement prevent them from finding common ground to move the country forward. The president also plans to encourage Americans to continue making their voices heard to shape the debate as policy is made, aides said.”
The New York Times on yesterday’s private swearing-in ceremony: “With only his family beside him, Barack Hussein Obama was sworn into office for a second term on Sunday in advance of Monday’s public pomp, facing a bitterly divided government at home and persistent threats abroad that inhibit his effort to redefine America’s use of power. “
Ron Fournier looks at passages from Lincoln’s second inaugural address that President Obama might want to reflect on and consider.

NBC’s Carrie Dann: “From drunken speeches to dead canaries, a guide to our quirky inaugural history.”
NBC’s Michael O’Brien: “Debt fight, gun control and immigration top president's to-do list.”
“The challenge for Obama is no different than that faced by Washington and the 15 other two-term presidents – how to make a second inaugural address sound fresh, meaningful and forward-looking. Almost all of Obama’s predecessors failed at this,” National Journal’s Condon writes.
David Maraniss: “Even now, on Day 1,460 of his presidency, the question persists: Who is he, really? There is a common refrain that Obama seems elusive, if not mysterious; less easily categorized and understood than the last Democratic president. Bill Clinton’s traits were so extra-large and variegated, for better and worse, that something in him seemed to connect to almost anybody and anything. No doubt Obama is a different breed of cat. Aspects of his political personality are less vivid than Clinton’s. But he is not overly elusive. His mystery is hiding in plain sight. There is a pattern to his behavior, just as there was with Clinton. Where Clinton was protean, Obama is more slowly evolving. People tend to forget, or underestimate, that he had scant executive experience before becoming president. Behind his veneer of ultra-cool control he was struggling to figure things out. Now, after four years, his presidential identity has started to approach its full shape, which will become clearer from now to 2016.”
“Obama was sworn in several hours after Vice President Joe Biden took his oath at 8:21 a.m. at his official residence at the Naval Observatory. The early hour for his ceremony was because Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor -- who was the first Latina and third woman to administer the oath for a vice president -- had to catch a train to New York for a book signing. She will return in time for Monday’s Capitol ceremony,” the Boston Globe reports.
“Former President Bill Clinton warned a group of top Democratic donors at a private Saturday meeting not to underestimate the passions that gun control stirs among many Americans,” Politico writes.
Said Clinton: “Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them. A lot of these people live in a world very different from the world lived in by the people proposing these things. I know because I come from this world."
Vice President Joe Biden pledged to pursue climate change in an Obama second term in a surprise appearance at the Green Ball Sunday night. “I'll tell you what my green dream is: that we finally face up to climate change," Biden said, adding, “I don't intend on ending this four years without getting an awful lot more done. … Keep the faith. … There is science in the White House."
“Four years after President Barack Obama promised to change the culture of Washington, it’s hard to imagine how his ethics, transparency and campaign finance pledges could have backfired more thoroughly,” Roll Call writes. “Even before the president solicited unlimited corporate donations for his inauguration and announced he will reinvent his campaign operation as an unrestricted lobbying group, government watchdog groups were already fed up with Obama’s many reversals. Grievances include his failure to follow through on pledges to overhaul the public financing system, to fill vacancies at the Federal Election Commission and to make his administration the most transparent in history. Not to mention his decision to embrace unrestricted super PACs after saying he would reject them. From a public relations point of view, Obama would have drawn far less criticism had he promised — and done — nothing on the government watchdog front.”

The world is in the worst state of mind since Obama got in and it will only get worse. I can't believe that millions of people just have no idea what is happening or the people running our government. As long as they get free stuff they don't care. Of course it is another prophecy coming to pass as it is stated in Daniel and Revelations. I don't think the Lord would ever go to where there is drinking and carrying on ever and now with the swearing in and the parties following. It is a sad world for all. I worked for48 years and paid my taxes yet all the people that aren't working get everything free. Most of the workers get paid under the table and no one does anything about it. Pray everyday that we will be a better world. God Bless America
Speaking of people who are not working and yet getting lots of free stuff, are you talking about the members of the House of Representatives?
So, Marthell, you are working so hard that you have time to write your uninformed crap on this blog?
Ghee..... 48 years working.....paid under the table.....WTF?
Which is it Marthell......Perhaps you need to address your, no doubt, right-wing TeaPeople representative. Let them know that you want to slash MEDICARE/MEDICAID....and of course privatize Social Security. Get rid of the 'takers'........Sounds like you need some mental health counseling.
Marthell, I'm glad you know all the people who need this government help. Maybe you'd like to get an organization started to assist them in finding gainful employment, maybe, since you already know their situations and who they are? You might be able to do good instead of writing these negative comments. Or, if you don't really know them, maybe you need to not imply that, so the rest of us don't get the wrong impression, and think you do--tsk, tsk, that's a form of lying, you know....
“Even before the president solicited unlimited corporate donations for his inauguration and announced he will reinvent his campaign operation as an unrestricted lobbying group, government watchdog groups were already fed up with Obama’s many reversals."
Indeed - Obama is famous for his 'rhetoric' about 'Change we can believe in', but the reality is that he's just another Chicago-Style politician.
Marthell "The world is in the worst state of mind since Obama got in and it will only get worse. I can't believe that millions of people just have no idea what is happening or the people running our government. As long as they get free stuff they don't care."
Why did Obama win?
Obama increased the number of people dependent on the government for assistance (the number of people getting food stamps, free health care and/or cash aid increased from about 30 million in 2008 to about 47 million in 2012). That's an increase of about 17 million getting 'free' assistance from the government.
Obama's campaign then implied that “If Romney is elected, he will take away your food stamps”.
Obama won this group by about 11 million votes, while Romney won the group that pays the income taxes to fund the welfare by about 6 million votes – Net win for Obama of about 5 million votes.
Simple, but effective.
According to Exit Polls from the election, there were about 50.8 Million (41% of total) voters in the income group averaging under $30,000 per year (Welfare eligible), and 30.9 Million of them voted for Obama, vs only 19.9 Million for Romney – that's a net gain for Obama of 11 million votes, and Obama won overall by less than 5 million votes.
Marthell you need to get a dose of reality. Nothing you posted above is true, it's all a concoction of your own mind. Or is it Fox and Limbaugh have taken over your mind.
Now, now, Mo. Remember, it's a very tough day for Marthell and his/her ilk. Let them spew, else we'll have their pointy little heads exploding ala the old movie, "Scanners".
I saw the movie Zero Dark Thirty this weekend, about the hunt for Osama bin laden, and it brought back to me the atmosphere of fear and misdirection we all lived under during the Bush years. Having Barack Obama as our President feels more like we are living in the daylight again. It's hard to believe the media thinks normalcy is "less exciting" than the conditions under which Obama was sworn into office in 2008.
Where in the heck do you get all this free stuff republicans speak of? Do you have to be a democrat or liberal to get the stuff, are republicans barred from getting free stuff. I am kind of confused, because 9 of the top 10 welfare states as measured by what they pay in federal taxes and get back in federal aid are solid red states. Republicans talk a good game, but it is just that, all talk, they are more dependent on the government dole than blue states.
Forest, the truth is that republicans could care less about welfare, or as the talking heads like to call it free stuff, or gift from Obama. Republicans held the congress for a good many years and for 6 years had a republican president and did little or nothing to reform welfare. And as a matter of fact it took a democratic president (Bill Clinton) to propose anything that resembles welfare reform. Why? because it really isn't a big problem nor is it even deal. When Clinton was president we achieved what many economist felt was full employment, it was around 3%, That means if you take out the people that cannot work for either mental or physical reasons and those that were between jobs or transition to a new job there leave very few people that either will not nor want to work. Its not a big a deal as they want to make it. Plus the fact as you point out there are republicans on welfare also.
IF welfare is such a great lifestyle as republicans point out, many more of them would be quitting their jobs and getting on the dole. Simply put, it isn't a career that most want to enter.
I would imagine it is mighty hard to live the good life on an unemployment or a disability check, Johntho, but they make it sound so wonderful!
The welfare that Repubs care about is what they've been doling out to big corporations in the form of subsidies and contracts - sometimes no-bid ones like they gave to Haliburton (and indirectly Dick Cheney). That doesn't bother the Marthells of the world. I wonder if after working for 48 years he decided to forego his Social Security and Medicare on principle?
Obama threw away the triumphs of the Iraq war and now Iraqi Al-Qaeda terrorist cells provide the 3,000 fighters that are the cutting edge of the Islamist's assaulting Assad. Apparently that has not stopped Iraq from providing a direct line of support from Iran to Syria. Obama is in denial or openly lied about everything he has done in Afghanistan and when he unilaterally pulls troops out the Taliban, an Islamic inspired theocracy that commits crimes against humanity as a matter of religious practice will have the Obama gold seal of Pro-Islam approval.
Obama's debt, his welfare economy gone wild and solutions that irreparably tied to spending and raising taxes instead of profits is an assault on infidel institutions that are too prosperous and offend most Islamic sensitivities.
Yesterday was a great day in American history the day we celebrate a true American, who lauded America for its many blessings; it was Reverend Martin Luther King's Day. His dream is still alive, perhaps someday not too distant, we will elect a true human being and not a poser with a mean anti-American streak developed from a hurt ego turned office psychopathology.

Please explain, what exactly were the triumphs of this war?
