VIDEO: First Read Minute: 'Hope' replaced by 'cope'

NBC's Mark Murray highlights the latest NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll numbers showing President Obama's approval rating over fifty percent just days ahead of his second inauguration.

Edited by NBC's Natalie Cucchiara.

This optimist still has hope!

It's the nattering nay-boobs of negativity who will have to "cope"!

If President Obama can get half of what he got done in his first term, over the next 4 years, this country will be much better off...

We must keep moving forward NO matter how difficult the challenges >>>

Feisty and Amy, I believe the rational among us still has hope and sees the country moving in the right direction. The fear mongers will be touting desperation and misery - it's their motto.

Congress will continue to try to derail the President - even though they were shown it wasn't appreciated during the last election. The few intelligent Republicans are calling for radical changes in their party. Will anyone listen? Not really sure but I can see a branching off of those Republicans who truly want the best for the country - instead of party over everything.

As much as I may regret it, I see Christie leading the charge for big changes in the GOP or for a third party. He actually appears to be done with the stupidity that has replaced reason in what was a once grand party. We'll see.

Fesity, like you I have hope. I see too many people of every age who are disgusted with the hate spewed by the far right. I see people who shake their heads in disbelief that people are against protecting the most vulnerable among us - simply because they love guns more. I see older people joining with college students to demand equal rights for everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, sex, etc.

I see hope!

Then there's WCA who has apparently never had a moment he didn't hate something or someone. Sad, really!

WCA,

Americans are forced to cope thanks to the Congress especially the House that would rather put our National economy at risk than give our President a win on anything.

Witnesses To Democracy – President Obama’s 2nd Inauguration

The National Mall:

George Washington in 1791 hired Pierre Charles L’Enfant to design Washington DC. What L’Enfant
envisioned was a grand avenue between the Capitol and a statute of Geo. Washington, so it’s hard to imagine that through the years this Mall housed troops, cattle were slaughtered there and railroad tracks were laid across portions of the Mall, the noise from the trains disrupting Congress daily. L’Enfant’s
vision was largely forgotten through the years and the Mall had become a most undignified place.

In 1846 the Smithsonian Institute was established. Angered by the neglect The Mall received over the years, President Fillmore in 1851 hired Andrew Jackson Downing, a very popular landscape designer, to provide a landscape plan for the Mall area. President Fillmore's Mall plans were never fully carried out;
Congress thought the project too expensive and only offered limited funds. In 1852 Downing died after an explosion on a steamer – the Henry Clay. And then the Civil War broke out, side lining all work on the Mall.

In 1888, the George Washington Monument was dedicated.

In 1902 L’Enfant’s plans were once again resurrected, with added inspiration from the Colombian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893, with green grass bordered on each side with elm trees and public bldgs.

The railroad was removed in 1909. The first Smithsonian bldg. was built in 1847-55 and was named for James Smithson, an Englishman who donated his entire fortune to the United States in order to found an
establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men. What a beautiful gift to America.

The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in 1922. At the dedication was Abraham Lincoln’s last surviving son, Robert. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was constructed in 1922-23.

The National Mall over time became the starting place for tourists to make their way around the nation’s capitol; it became a place to walk, to picnic, to jog, ride a bike, a place to take in book fairs, a place to
demonstrate and on and on.

The National Mall has also throughout the years come to symbolize our country’s journey, beginning with
George Washington and all our Founding Fathers right through today.

And whether it be Marian Anderson’s Easter Sunday concert in 1939 or Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech in 1963, it is clear to us all that the National Mall became what L’Enfant wanted it to be - a place for us all.

And so we the people get to witness another day of democracy – the Inauguration of our president as we witness this historical event from the National Mall. Another day added to our rich history.

When I went to President Obama’s first Inauguration, it was brutally cold & windy.

But what I will never forget were the people I met who came from all over our Nation for this special moment on our National Mall. They spent hours upon hours on the Mall on that cold day, just standing there, determined to witness history. With a smile on every single face.

It for me was so cold, yet so warm.

What a special moment for Barack Obama and his family, for all those who campaigned so hard for him, it was a special moment for we the people and a truly special moment for the United States of America.

And will be again on Monday.

Bush was responsible for all this misery and Republicans continue to perpetuate it, and that's a fact.

Just because Republicans are not able to face the truth, doesn't mean it never happened.

What's worse is, Republicans continue to stall our economic recovery and stand in the way of progress.

You would have thought that the article of late yesterday would have given the left enough of a beating that they didn't want to go after this dead horse of hope and change anymore but, some people just don't see outside their own miniscule box.

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/01/17/16570498-nbcwsj-poll-public-lowers-expectations-heading-into-obamas-2nd-term?lite

And on another note:

Despite constant hammering by the national news media, the National Rifle Association has a favorability rating of 54 percent in the latest Gallup survey, slightly higher than President Obama's rating of 53 percent.

While those figures are within the poll's margin of error, they show that the NRA's popularity is in the same range as that of the Democratic president who issued 23 executive orders to accomplish goals the gun-rights group has promised to combat in "the fight of the century."

Actually billybob, the majority of Americans believe, accurately, that George Bush IS responsible for the mess we are still digging out from and that the country is now moving in the right direction. The MAJORITY of Americans have a favorable opinion of President Obama and believe the Republican party is a dismal failure. They place the blame for not recovering from the economic problems we have had squarely on Congress.

You really need to get out more so you understand what is actually going on in the world.

And, about Bush, isn't it interesting that he's keeping such a low profile. But as the WORST President in modern times I guess he thinks that might be a good idea!

Talk ... and isn't it telling that the NRA is now run by and for the gun manufacturers and yet stupid people still flock to put money in their pockets - not realizing that those same manufacturers don't give a damn about anyone - just making more money. The mentally ill seem to be the ones stocking up on firearms and putting money in the killers pockets!

Pat, it was an absolutely amazing night. In front of me were a "hippieish" white couple with their grown children; I had brought a hispanic realtor with me; to our side were a group of young African Americans and behind us was a young white woman with a small baby - couldn't have been more than 4 months old. I said, "you brought her? But, she'll never remember this!" Her reply, "but I'll tell her she was there when history was made." I still get chills and teary-eyed when I think of her. What a wonderful gift to give to her young child.

When it was announced that Barack Obama had won, everyone was laughing and crying and hugging everyone else. It was a time I will NEVER forget.

The realtor I brought with me told me her grandparents wanted to thank me for inviting her. I hadn't really thought about her background - just that she was a friend and someone I worked with. But at that moment I realized Obama's election reached across ethnicities and touched so many lives. It was incredible!

Pat, I'm envious. I'll be thinking of you and JoAnne and wishing I was there. And, I'll probably again have tears of happiness streaming down my face as he takes the oath of office!

Hey, one of the best vacations I ever had was a week in Fairbanks, AK between Christmas and New Year's. Most of the week it was around -20 to -25. New Year's Day was sunny and about -45, and yes, we went for a walk. By the last day of my visit when it went up to a balmy -5, I found myself walking around downtown with my hat off, no mittens, and my parka unzipped. So sure - I think I could handle your wimpy little 0.

Just one thing, though - there's a reason I'm a cat person. They don't need to be walked......

Pat and Seeking - All I can promise is that I'm gonna try! Last time we must have walked 6 or 7 miles before the day was over - you wouldn't think you could get blisters under all those layers of socks! - and I am, sad to say, four years older and gimpier now. But hey..... it was without a doubt the most amazing day of my life, and I can't imagine passing up the chance to at least try and re-create it. So look for me on tv - I'll be the very tall blonde in the 2009 Inaugural sweatshirt, fake fur jacket and pink scarf jumping up and down and chanting "Four more years!"

WCA: "Holy crap. Talk about pathetic"

Let's see, unemployment is still high, the national debt has increased from $10.8 trillion to almost $16.5 trillion, Obama has chosen to ignore existing immigration laws to pander for Hispanic vote, he is now usurping his power as President to try and infringe on 2nd amendment rights, he has no rational energy plan, his foreign policy is inconsistent, he has never had a budget passed during his entire second term, he has spent most of his 4 years campaigning to get re-elected, and he has pushed through the most expensive government takeover of 1/6 of our country's entire economy through Obamacare .... only extreme liberals see this as positive !

Bingo! When I first saw the article and the survey, I noticed it did not drill down (as usual) on the who and why. Progressives are only pessimistic about Congress being dysfunctional because of Teapublican extremism and obstruction.

In particular we hope rules will be restored for the filibuster, and propositions for bipartisan commissions to draw district in swing states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida (to name the most important states) will be on ballots in 2014. These machinations by Teapublicans of abusing the filibuster and using gerrymandering to force Tyranny by the Minority upon the nation has to end, and it has to end NOW.

Once gerrymandering is ended, then these douchebag Teapublicans will not be able to proceed with their latest anti-democracy and unpatriotic behavior of trying to change electoral college rules in states they control (see list above). If all those states changed from "winner take all" to giving gerrymandered districts to the Teapublican candidate, Romney would have won the electoral college by a lot -- The popular vote be damned. The same way Dems had their majority in the House stolen from them in the 2012 election we just had, only this would be on a larger scale across of all branches of government.

Liberals already put up with losing 2000 to Dubya though Gore won the popular vote, and yet Teapubicans were angrily speculating that if Romney won the popular vote but not the electoral college, they would take to the streets. WTF?! Now the rightwing hypocrites are plotting and planning how to do exactly that for their own candidate in the future.

And strategists wonder why Democrats have become so angry. It's not about being out of power, rather about being cheated of power that they have rightfully won. Harry Reid and Democrats in the Senate -- The first step is to restore the talking filibuster or everything else will be obstructed in this second term. It's a no-brainer.

I love FR, however, I disagree with your lede.

Americans had more hope in 2009? We needed "hope" cause we were heading into the worst economic times since the Great Depression. Hope was all we had!

Where have you been? The economy has finally turned around, however Congress seems to be threatening to stall the recovery. I'm sorry "disgust with Congress" doesn't rhyme with "hope," but there it is.

Lowest approval ratings for Congress, approval ratings for the Republican Party upside down, Americans angry with House leaders, Obama popular and his policies supported by the majority...there is your story.

Maybe in your liberal lala land but the reality is the people are finally waking up to their mistake of voting for this President again. People are finally waking up to the fact that President Obama talks a good talk but doesn't wolk the walk on anything that comes out of his mouth.

As you can see by poor ozzie's hysteria, some of the far right refuse to admit they have no product to sell except hatret and vitrol - and the mentally healthy in the country are refusing to buy!

Exactly. The Maine state legislature returned to Democratic control in 2012, and the Tea Party governor elected in 2010 has a snow ball's chance in hell of being re-elected in 2014. Republicans had their chance to show us their policies when they were elected in 2010 - and it turned out to be cutting taxes for the rich and dropping Medicaid for the poor. I don't think Tea Party policies have been popular or effective anywhere they have actually been implemented.

I think President Obama has had just about enough of Republicans blocking his every move and then trying to condemn HIM for not acting.

Keep your eyes open, and watch how many Executive Orders President Obama puts in place to get the job done for the Majority of Americans, instead of watching the "minority" try to run things in the opposite direction.

MORE DEMOCRAT CORRUPTION>>>>>>

NEW ORLEANS — Former New Orleans Mayor, DEMOCRAT Ray Nagin was indicted Friday on 21 corruption charges including wire fraud, bribery and money laundering.

The charges come from a City Hall corruption investigation that already has resulted in guilty pleas by two former city officials and two businessmen.

The counts against Nagin include wire fraud, bribery, money laundering, filing false tax returns and conspiracy.

Greg Meffert, a former technology official and deputy mayor under Nagin, pleaded guilty in 2010 to charges he took bribes and kickbacks in exchange for steering city contracts to businessman Mark St. Pierre. Anthony Jones, who served as the city's chief technology officer in Nagin's administration, also pleaded guilty to taking payoffs.

Meffert cooperated with the government in its case against St. Pierre, who was convicted in May 2011 of charges that include conspiracy, bribery and money laundering.

From "How to read a Column" by William Safire:

"2. Never look for the story in the lede. Reporters are required to put what's happened up top, but the practiced pundit places a nugget of news, even a startling insight, halfway down the column, directed at the politiscenti. When pressed for time, the savvy reader starts there."

When pressed for time, the savvy reader should always start with Amy first!

well, I confess, I can't hear the video, because I 'm at work, and my lipreading is not that great, but it seems to me the true theme of this inaugural year is that we have a popular President who is stymied by a dis-loyal Opposition Party. America is disenchanted with the Tea Party, yet the moderate Republicans seem to have lost control of their party. The people love, or at least respect, this President, but Congress, not so much.

Our US economy is doing so much better. The stock market is up, 401 K are going up in value from the 2008 crash, unemployment is down, housing is improving, the debt that was created under W. Bush is going down some, and we as a Nation are again respected by the World. Then we see one war is over, Bin Laden is dead, Obama care will be in full force by 2014 and revenues will be going up.

President Obama has done a GREAT job as President in his first four years as President. In the second term we will see even better results.

Also, folks need to realize that President Obama is not the reason for our high debt. That is a total myth cooked up by the extreme right, who know nothing but hate, and want our Nation to fail.

Also, I'm looking forward to the Presidents Organizing for Action, taking on the NRA and other causes that we the Nation need. Take it to them Mr. President!!!

I'm so tired of watching our dysfunctional congress destroy our country and it's good reputation. I am embarrassed to say I an American when I travel abroad. Prior to the Bush administration I was proud to say I was. but it has gone down hill ever since. I think I'll relocate to the UK. And for you GOP people I won't let the door hit me on the way out.

I stand corrected: Dysfunctional senate. The Founders intended that the House be seen as more closely representing the will of the people than the Senate.

To this end, they provided that members of the House - U.S. Representatives - be elected by and represent limited groups of citizens living in small geographically defined districts within each state. Senators, on the other hand, are elected by and represent all voters of their state. When the House considers a bill, individual members tend to base their votes primarily on how the bill might impact the people of their local district, while Senators tend to consider how the bill would impact the nation as a whole. This is just as the Founders intended.

My bosses, who I've worked with for about 35 of the 43 years I've been working, said it was fine with them if I used one of those things called "vacation days". Aren't they just the sweetest things?

Of course, if they were really nice guys, we'd have the day off anyway, just like millions and millions of other Americans (maybe even you?) will - Monday being a federal holiday and all. Martin Luther King Day - ever hear of it? Nah, guess not.....
