Christie blasts 'reprehensible' NRA ad

Citing his own experience as a father in the public eye, Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie hammered the National Rifle Association Thursday for referencing the president's daughters in a "reprehensible" and "awful" web ad.

"To talk about the president's children or any public officers children who have -- not by their own choice, but by requirement -- to have protection, to use that somehow to try to make a political point I think is reprehensible," he said at a news conference in Trenton.

Christie, who has four children, said that his kids had "no choice, realistically" in his decision to become a public figure and themselves be subject to the media spotlight.

"I think it's awful to bring public figures' children into the political debate," he said. "They don't deserve to be there. And I think for any of us who are public figures, you see that kind of ad and you cringe."

The web ad, released Tuesday night, questions the president's skepticism of the NRA's proposal to put armed guards in every school in America even though the First Family has Secret Service Protection.

"Are the presidents’ kids more important than yours?”  a narrator asks in the short video.

Christie, who was criticized by some on the right for praising the president in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, is up for re-election this year. He is commonly cited as a possible 2016 presidential contender for the GOP.

The popular governor said Thursday that the controversial advertisement undermines the NRA's credibility as an advocate for gun rights.

"Don’t be dragging people’s children into this,” he said. “It’s wrong and I think it demeans them and it makes them less of a valid trusted source of information on the real issues that confront this debate."

Christie's making a bid for the White House in 2016, No doubt about it. I like the stand he is taking which is totally the opposite of what the rest of the GOP is doing. I have a hard time trusting him, though.

Yes tony--I was thinking that myself. I am curious if all of this is just window dressing. There were videos of him being truly rude and disgusting to some of his constituents, especially women, who had questions about his policies. There was also the video of him taking a helicopter to one of his kids' sports event. He has been known to use bully-boy techniques. Is he really changing or is this just to pander to the electorate? I am thinking the latter....

Me too. As the old saying goes, "a skunk can't change his stripe" Christie has been a disgusting slob in the past and I have a hard time trusting anything he says and I would never vote for him no matter who was running against him. No, my gut instinct says it's all a ploy.

The NRA keeps sending out emails begging for money, the latest one telling it's members that the president's next step is to "confiscate your guns". This was sent out by the NRA's ILA Executive Director Chris Cox (appropriately named, and probably bullied as a child).

Like a shelter dog* being lead to the chamber, the NRA smells death.

Me? I'm changing my stance on these assault weapons. I think I need to get a couple of Bushmasters, and maybe some other high-end fire power.

Why? Well, WE the PEOPLE elected President Obama in free and open elections. If anyone from outside that sacred circle decides to overthrow OUR government, WE need to do the right thing, and fight them to the end. Alquida, Taliban....ANY of the terrorists that don't respect OUR government and want to overthrow it are fair game.

Oh, and did I mention a$$hole$ like Ted Nugent, and all the other cowards that are making all the noise? What- you thought I only meant threats from OUTSIDE our borders??

Think again. I'll shoot it out with 'em. In a heartbeat. Who's with me??

(and Christi? I think the guy's alright. Which means, of course, he doesn't stand a chance with his own party)

[Oh, and did I mention a$$hole$ like Ted Nugent...]

I hear Nugent shat his pantaloons to get out of serving in the U.S. military. I wonder how all the "veterans" here take that little tidbit.

And didn't Rush Limbaugh have a pimple on his ass or something that kept him out of serving?

Seems those that like to squeal the loudest have the smallest peanuts.

John, you're spot on but I think he was already ostracized by his own party for walking along with the president with their arms around each other.

I, personally, wouldn't be surprised if Christie switches sides, or at least becomes an Independent.

Hey Feisty--we always have yummy brownies available--darn it though, they go so fast I have to keep making them--maybe that is good--they're always fresh! Good to be back!

I think Christie is trying to pander to the electorate that is not part of his party anyway--maybe thinking he will pick up the moderate vote from both parties. I agree that the skunk is not going to change his stripes--this is just the appearance of being moderate. Time will tell if there is any substance, but I really doubt it. I would not want him representing our country on the world stage--we have had enough of the vigilante bully boy cowboy mentality in politics! It doesn't go over well with the rest of the world. He seems to know which way the political winds are blowing and thinks his chances may be better if he seems to follow. I hope people won't be fooled by him.

Christie wouldn't make it through a Republican primary as it stands now. They are too far right and racist as a group and hate the fact that Christie hugged a black man. The NRA is powerless and have sunk to such lows they have cemented their own demise. Not a bad thing at all since it appears they have become gun manufacturer's choir boys. And these creepy CEOs talking about 70 as a retirement age haven't worked hard labor or on their feet all day all their lives and are clueless. That would make us a third world nation in regards to dealing with our seniors. We're already a third world nation in education, healthcare and infant mortality so except for our military might, there's not much left for us to call ourselves "civilized". Most "civilized" nations retire much earlier than us already, have better education systems, healthcare and infant mortality rates than us. So like it or not, "Down we go!"

Further proof that it's actually the more dangerous far-righties who win the "electability" argument. Christie, as a conservative rock star, is immunized enough against attacks from his right flank that he can play to the middle with relative impunity. Romney and McCain did not have that luxury and were doomed by their constant efforts to win the approval of their base. George W. Bush, on the other hand, had the luxury to promote a heretical brand of "compassionate conservatism" and again could play to the middle and win precisely because the right knew he was one of them.

Christie knows what he's doing. He's locking up re-election, and positioning himself as the most honestly electable Republican for 2016.

From CBS This Morning (this morning) . . .

DAVID KEENE: The ad was not about the President's kids. The ad was about the fact that the President's children-

NORAH O'DONNELL: Let me stop you right there, David, because I looked at the ad again this morning. I read through the transcript. You actually mentioned the President's kids three times! Three times!

KEENE: Of course, we did, and we also had pictures of a number of other people, including David Gregory and others who send their children to schools that have protection, and derive the idea that average citizen's children should be protected. That was our point. Our point is not about the President's kids. It's not about his kids – it's about everybody else's kids. We think that one of the most important things we can do is provide security to the children of America, and we don't think that's an inappropriate message.

You people are failing to see the simplest of logic. There is no criticism in protecting the Presidents kids. There IS a HUGE criticism in telling the American public that aremd guards in schools is a bad or stupid idea, and yet a school which does and has for years employed its own armed guards was not a stupid or poorly managed school when you sent your kids to it.

BTW The President appears to have backed off his position too you know. In his proposal he included funding for more support in school. More support = armed guards because it wasn't the terrible idea people made it out to be, even though he and his party lambasted it when it was first mentioned.

You throw aroud terms like stupid and yet appear to stupid to know what an assault weapon is. The military has assault RIFLEs. One trigger pull, many bullets fired. This conversation, is about so called "assault weapons". Regular old rifles that shoot one bullet per pull, just like that hunting rifle you claim you use. Oh I guess a slidy stock thing and special hand grip make it so much more dangerous huh?

Christie may or may not have eyes on the White House. Did anyone consider that he may be simply advocating reasonable gun control laws? He does, after all, have Newark in his state. Christie just irks the rwnj extremists as he is more moderate and the extremists can't handle it. I am sure they will be calling him all sorts of names soon. He'll be a RINO and any other horrible names they can think of. The fact is Gov. Christie sees the light and isn't intimidated by those who are in the dark and want to drag everyone else in there with them.

Christie antagonizing all those Doomsday Preppers in the GOP/T Party of Fear, Hate and God is mighty fine by me.

The NRA panders to the not so bright redneck that can't seem to understand that because you can't buy a gun whose only purpose is to mow down as many people as possible with one clip doesn't mean that you will have all your guns forcibly taken away. They feed into the insecure paranoia of these types of people and know they will run out and spend big money that they should be using to pay their bills on these guns. The NRA doesn't give a rat's a@@ about the second amendment they only care that they want to make more money off the ignorant. They were out in full force before the election trying whip these sad people into a frenzy and it will be real interesting how at the end off 2015 the sky will not have fallen and these people will still have their guns, but they will be laughing all the way to the bank. I'll bet the NRA won't be backing Christie for the next GOP pick, no he's seems to not be the type to let them buy his votes like so many repubs, they will be looking for someone like Bush or Cheney who they can tell how to vote with their campaign money. Pay attention to who the NRA are buying off and vote them out.

the plan will be to notify registered gun owners by US Mail of a buy back offer of 1/4 to 1/3 the value for their registered firearms. unregistered weapons have a one time only chance to be included and if later found the owner will face prison time. ammunition will not be included and the owner will be expected to surrender at the sme time. no money will be offered for ammo.

for those who do not participate in round 1 will get a 2nd letter saying their bank account has been frozen. anyone receiving money from the government all federal and state employees, food stamp recipients, SSI, disability, state retirement, etc. that will also be stopped. initially no brute force will be used because of the many who would be killed on both sides. die hards will set up ambushes for police and firefighters just to prove a point.

preachers will be asked (many already have) of all religions to join the effort to make America safe. the majority will comply. pastors that refuse will get a "we need to see you" note from the IRS to determine if the "love gifts" members of their congregation reported on their taxes were also reported as income on the preacher's return. after the plan is complete organized religion will be done away with completely through heavy taxation. how long? my guess is it will move quickly. no one can stop it , certainly not the republicans.

i have made a decision to sell my two pistols and if i need to defend my home i will use hornet killer spray and a baseball bat and hope fo r the best.

Judgement Day - what an idiotic post. No one is asking anyone to give up their pistols or rifles - just no more assault weapons or large capacity magazine. Stop listening to FOX, Rush and Glen Beck and at least try to grow a brain. NONE of us want all guns gone - just those used to kill as many people as possible. YOU and people like you who post such nonsense are the problem!

Sorry. When Obama parades the kids (his always convenient 'human shields') all bets are off. When the President's kids are allowed to attend Sidwell Friends School in D.C. with no less than 11 armed guards (OMG, how traumatic for the children...OMG!) it does nothing to bolster his "argument" that schools must be "gun free zones". When NBC's, liberal-brownnoser, David Gregory chastises Wayne LaPierre for his insistence that armed guards be put in all elementary schools (30% of all U.S. Elem. Schools currently have them in place...wonder how those parents will respond, hmmmm), David pulls the same elitist play #1, 'do as I say, don't do as I do', when he fails to mention in the interview (i.e., hides behind the truth) that his kids also attend Sidwell Friends, he did every viewer a huge disservice. Then to have NBC protest their puppet, Gregory, from being pictured in the, now viral, NRA video is what is known as 'poetic justice'. That stinkin' 1st Amendment is a bitch, when it is used against you, isn't it? No? Ask the Journal News.

What a Pres, isn't he. Great uniter--wow...just look at the progress so far. A leader he is not: He cannot crush toes first, then ask for cooperation. He'll never learn that with enablers and HYPOCRITES like NBC, Gregory, Christie, and the general uninformed (love to be led) and their counterpart, the educated-beyond-their-intelligence-elites (those that have had lifelong trouble questioning authority), WILL HE? I'm from the larger group of citizenry that looks out there and sees everyone, spare no one, sitting on the john so please do not sugarcoat and otherwise deny what is class-A hypocritical behavior! That crap has gone on for too long that it has become the "new normal' in government. Your cheesy reasons for the different safety protocol afforded all the children will get little traction.

What a mess this country has found itself. It will not get any better, before it gets much worse. I'm absolutely sure that Obama and the media will soon have so much on their hands that, if she were still here, Rosa Parks would be proud. That, my friends, I'm sorry to say, is exactly where we are headed; watch.

Why ? Because it takes a 2/3's majority to repeal a existing law. He does NOT have the votes and he is smart enough not to try. Why pick a fight that you know your gonna get your butt kicked ! It's called "Knowing what battles you can win" :)

I love you, "seeking sanity"; you guys are so predictiable when you jump to the conclusions that have been scripted just for you. You must have gone to a catholic school where you parked your rights at the door; how cruel! Unfortunately, for you, someone else told you how to operate within the boundaries of comformity...and you, like the good boy, never looked back. The only drawback is that, never venturing outside of these bounds makes it difficult to truthfully debate the issues (lots of the most sincere empathy from me). When you meet resistance (another opinion that doesn't conform) you've learned to try to reason with the malcontent and when that doesn't work, begin the personal attacks (elitist play #2) just like your brethren...you were a good little student. Like I said, there are those that love to be led and you do fit the bill. Don't get yourself in trouble by really putting some thought to the [new and safer laws] being invented; just like them because they'll, surely, make everyone safer (oh, and remember you'll be liked for doing so...just THAT fact must be comforting to you). So, sit back and be assured (like the good follower that you are) that the criminals will just fall in place and comply. That's the way they (you know...your newest keepers) told you it will work (you guys seek out a keeper...gotta have one...what an everyday burden...I am iclined to feel sorry your types) .

You probably drive a Prius, right? You do? I was right!!

Christie is a traitor, and showed his true colors, demo-blue. its surprisingly clear how when Obuma does it, its ok, let me have kids up here on stage, and I wonder how much that cost the american taxpayer, and says its all about the kids, like Hitler, Stalin, and on and on, its not about the guns. Its never been about the guns, its about control. The NRA only pointed it out. Public servants chose to do that to thier children, so to feel sorry for them is ridiculous. The schools in texas have police, it works, and it doesn't tramatize the kids. So, what is wrong with it in every school. He said if it would save only one person, it would be worth trying it. So, lets put armed security in every school, I bet it saves alot of lives, and Obuma could take part of the credit, and he probably would do it had it been his idea.

I wonder if Obama told Christie that he had to speak in a more friendly manner toward him if he wanted FEMA to help New Jersey. That would be a Chicago politician thing to do.

Christie is just playing the game were he is trying to get as much as he can from Obama & once that is done you can bet he will start bashing Obama right away. Of course this is not right way of doing things but when everything is said & done he will still be a Republican.

Sidwell Friends School has 11 armed guards NOT COUNTING THE SECRET SERVICE. So if you're one of the elite who can afford to spend $35,000.00 to $40,000.00 (per year) to send your kids to this school, they will be safe even after the President's daughters have left and take the Secret Service with them.

Amazing how the people that were griping about the poor wanting what the rich have without working hard to get it during the election process are now saying that they should have what the highest ranking person in the world has. The more I watch both sides the more content I am getting leaning to the liberal side. I dont believe in giving to the lazy nor do I believe that you should be contemptious of those that have more. Would you sacrifice your child if they were snatched, hell no but Obama would have to make that decision, his children versus some unknown request that could possiblly effect your personal life anyhow. Why even put him into that position. Your children are in way less harms way than his. Oh you want that bulls eyes to be able to hit it's mark on his two children to prove what point? I suppose you want 2 life guards at the kiddie pool since there are two at your big 7 foot deep pool. Grow up or if you want that kind of protection give up some more taxes so the federal can hire all the guards you want. Some of the very folks screaming leave their children to their own devises at home while they are here and there compaining about everything else. They used to be called Latch Key Kids. What kind of protection is there for them when they are home alone?.

He gets downright rude to people. He says what he thinks. He is not out for brownie points-he doesn' t need then. And I would really like to know one good reason for all the Nuggent followers why there is ever a reason for automatic assault weapons except mass murder? The only guns EVER made should be hand guns, hunting rifles-for all you bad ass guys who like to think your awesome outsmarting bambi. Only military and police should ever need those weapons.

with 300 million on the street and more going out every day it's going to be interesting to see how this thing really plays out. i visit guns shops on a regular basis and the good old boys (and girls) are buying the BIG Bore stuff. .30 and 50 caliber and all the high capacity magazines and ammo they can get their hands on. my .308 and my spotter went head to head with 20 NV and their full auto AK's. when the smoke cleared we left 8 face down and the rest on the run. it's not the weapon but the skill of the shooter. a well positioned marksman could prevent a school shooting from ever happening again.

He's another Odummy supporter that will kiss Odummy's A$$ anytime he thinks he can get his name in the paper. His only thoughts are how he can get himself elected to any office. He kisses Odummy's A$$ every chance his gets. And remember it was the so-called president (idiot-in-chief muslim bastard) that started using chrildren in his commercials to began with.
