NBC/WSJ poll: Public lowers expectations heading into Obama's 2nd term

As President Barack Obama is set to begin his second term next week, he finds himself with a job-approval rating above 50 percent and with majorities supporting his general direction on gun control and immigration, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

But he also confronts an American public holding mixed attitudes about the next four years, concerns about the economy and a belief that tougher times lie ahead.

Click here for the full poll (.pdf)

It’s a stark reversal from four years ago, when Obama’s first inauguration – despite taking place in the midst of the Great Recession – contained high expectations and seemed more like a “coronation,” says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

“If 2009 was all about hope, 2013 is about the ability to cope,” Hart adds of the public’s lower expectations about the economy and reducing partisanship in Washington.

General support for Obama’s gun, immigration agenda
In the poll, 52 percent of adults approve of the president’s overall job performance, which is down one point from last month. In addition, 49 percent approve of his handling of the economy, versus 48 percent who disapprove.

What’s more, the public appears to be receptive to the broad outlines of his top agenda items for a second team.

President Barack Obama speaks on proposals to reduce gun violence on Jan. 16, 2013 in the South Court Auditorium of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, next to the White House in Washington.

Fifty-six percent believe that the laws covering the sale of firearms should be stricter, compared with a combined 42 percent who want them less strict or kept the same.

That’s the most support on this particular question since 2006, but it’s less than the 60 percent to 70 percent who supported stricter gun laws during the 1990s, including when Congress passed an assault-weapons ban in 1994.

Related: NRA more popular than entertainment industry, poll says

Also, for the first time in the poll, a majority of Americans -- 52 percent -- favor allowing illegal immigrants who hold jobs to apply for legal status in this country.

And in the latest fiscal fight in Washington, more respondents say they would blame congressional Republicans (45 percent) than Obama and congressional Democrats (33 percent) if the nation’s debt limit isn’t raised and the country is unable to meet its obligations.

As for views on Obama’s qualities as president, he gets the best marks for being easygoing and likeable (61 percent give him high marks here), having the ability to handle a crisis (55 percent), being compassionate (53 percent), being knowledgeable and experienced (53 percent) and being a good commander in chief (51 percent).

His lowest marks come on achieving his goals (44 percent give him high marks here), working effectively with Congress (29 percent) and changing business as usual in Washington (28 percent).

'A lack of buoyancy'
Yet looking ahead to Obama’s next four years in office, Americans have tempered their expectations.

The public is split how Obama will fare in a second term, with a majority of respondents -- 51 percent -- saying they’re either “optimistic” or “satisfied.”

By comparison, a combined 48 percent say they are “uncertain” or “pessimistic.”

Asked another way, 43 percent are optimistic about the next four years, while 35 percent are pessimistic; 22 percent have a mixed opinion.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd talks about President Barack Obama's new set of gun control proposals.

In addition, more than seven in 10 are dissatisfied with the current state of the economy, and just more than a third are either “very” or “fairly” confident in Obama’s ability to promote a strong and growing economy.

And 60 percent believe the coming year will be a time to hold back and save because of harder times ahead, versus 34 percent who instead think it will be a time of economic expansion and opportunity.

“The poll reveals a lack of buoyancy in looking ahead,” Hart, the Democratic pollster, says.

Adds GOP pollster McInturff: “This feels like a long four years, and it feels like a long four years ahead.”

Public continues to sour on Congress, GOP
But if Americans have tempered the expectations for Obama’s second term, they have soured even more on Congress and the Republican Party.

Just 14 percent of adults approve of Congress’ job (which is near the all-time low in the poll), while 81 percent disapprove (which is close to its all-time high).

What’s more, 49 percent hold a negative view of the Republican Party – its highest negative rating in the survey since 2008. Only 26 percent have a positive view.

By comparison, the Democratic Party has a net positive rating, with 44 percent holding a favorable view of the party and 38 percent holding an unfavorable one.

And the conservative Tea Party movement – which took off in Obama’s first year as president – also finds its popularity at an all-time low in the poll, with 23 percent viewing it favorably and 47 percent unfavorably.

On Iraq and Afghanistan
Soon approaching the 10-year anniversary of the Iraq war, nearly six-in-10 say the war wasn't worth it, versus 35 percent who say it was.

Yet asked another way, 55 percent of respondents think the war was successful.

Meanwhile, a narrow majority of Americans – 51 percent – say the war in Afghanistan hasn’t been worth it, though 62 percent believe the war there has been successful

The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted Jan. 12-15 of 1,000 adults (including 300 cell phone-only respondents), and it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.

OH NOES!

Imagine the President who has met obstructionism from the right at every turn having an approval rating above 50%?

Hmmmm...

I wonder if the same cast of clowns have another dinner planned for the night of his second inauguration to plot how they can cause further suffering for the country?

Despite their objective, the country is recovery be it ever so slowly!

Imagine where we would be today, if Boehner & Co. had worked along side the President...

I find it interesting that more than 50% of people think the wars are not worth it but successful? After 10 years in Iraq and how many in Afghanistan....this is success? I wonder what they deem as failure?

The original poster doesn't seem to understand that republican opposition can't cover incompetency from the president. It's called checks and balances. They're not supposed to let the president just do any old thing he wants. Mainly, the democratic aim has been social experimentation instead of getting down to business. What have they done in the past four years that's so noteworthy? Pretend kill Osama bin laden, and remove the don't ask, don't tell, don't harass, don't pursue policy? Let's not even get started on Obamacare, and the lying fiasco used to implement it. I don't care how many lies the media says about Jobs recovery, until this American gets a job, I'm not believing any of it.

IMO, one reason many would not be more optimistic of his second term has alot to do with what we all experienced with the GOP led obstructionism at every turn. Many of us expect the same, and in just the couple of months since re-election, it does not appear that the GOP will work any differently. The party puts party before country.

The Great Recession is not going to end quickly while the GNOP is playing political gamesmanship with the country's future. That's not going to change until they're booted out of office or their right wing corporate masters are neutered by meaningful changes to the laws concerning lobbying and political contributions. (I would have said filibuster reform but I seriously doubt there are the balls in congress to pass any.)

fisty deadhead still believes skewed polls accurately reflect the populace. Not surprising. Of course "the public" has diminished expectations. Those that voted for him has seen nothing yet. The man's a serial documented liar who knew that the younger voters are mostly indoctrinated drones who hardly know who George Washington was. They don't even know that Hitler also surrounded himself with children while stripping the German people's freedom from them . Today's left is the same type of people which allowed Hitler to rise to power. They, too, looked for a savior.

My expectations are nothing short of impeachment and hopefully imprisonment.

For the drones out there, a little FYI; Gallup conducted a poll of the top issues concerning Americans. 4% said guns. The economy was by far the top issue.

The only obstructionist has been Obama himself. He is by far the most non transparent, deceitful, low down dirty president we have ever had. Just because sane people don't agree with his moronic decisions doesn't make them obstructionists. How many times have ideas from the House been turned away by Dirty Harry Reid and his cronies in the Senate?

Feisty...actually Bush had an approval rating of over 50% going into his second term with the Democratic Party controlling the Senate since 2001 when Jeffords went Independent but caucused with the Democrats (and they did not work with him as much as the GOP does not work with Obama).

In the 2006 mid-term elections, the Democrats took complete control of Congress and then nothing really got done! So what about 2013...we (America) already have this t-shirt the only difference is the President is now Democratic and the House is GOP.

Different year, same issues, same parties and the same inability to work together. Change the name of the Presidents and the controllers of Congress and it still smells like the same old BS to me just in a "new" package to see if we will fall for it!

workingpoor, Obama's policies are responsible for the dismal economic recovery. Since the GOP agreed raise the debt limit a year ago, the Obama Administration hasn't cut 1-cent from government spending. Time to tell the President what he, Pelosi, Reid, and many other Democrats told Bush when they voted not to raise the debt ceiling during Bush's term in office, "It's irresponsible to raise the nations debt ceiling." I'm a fiscal conservative, not a Republican, and I mistakenly voted for Obama in '08.

I'm still laughing at this from their "Retreat:" "Successful Communication with Minorities and Women,"

Unfortunately for Republicans, they may not be off to the best start with that process here in Williamsburg. Tomorrow morning there will be a discussion of "Successful Communication with Minorities and Women," but three of the four members listed (Reps. Adam Kinzinger, Scott Rigell, and Frank Wolf) are white men.

To make matters worse, the event is being held in a place called the "Burwell Plantation." When asked by a reporter if it seemed appropriate to have a discussion about communication with minorities in a place named after a slave owning family, Walden demurred.

President Obama and all his left wing nuts posting on here believe Obama was elected KING. The left wingers have no idea what is going on. Thank God we have had a Republican controlled House to stop the programs this President thinks he is entitled to. Obama wants all kind of programs but won't pay for them except by putting the country deeper in debt.

The gun control issue is more about deflecting from Obama's failure on the economy and jobs than the safety of children. Obama is taking a page from his Chicago partner, Emmanuel, that one should never let a crisis go to waste, or something along that line.

When one can not govern by consensus because of a lack of LEADERSHIP and a big ego, you demean those who don't agree with you. How do you expect to work on needed legislation if you refuse to negotiate, refuse to meet with the opposition, play the blame game and whine about the big bad House refusing to give him everything he wants.

Just think America, we can expect 4 more years of this blame game BS! It takes at least two opposing forces to create gridlock, but only one to lead us out of it. Looks like it will be 2016 before we find a leader who can.

    First term...expectations were high...George W. Bush's recession ruined everything.

Second term to start ....expectations lower ?? the actual results of the 2nd term will be better.

    .

Besides, when have you right-wingers started to believe in polls???

Most people want to reform Wall Street, you right-wingers refused to accept that; The GOP refused to accept the legitimacy of CFPB, the GOP in senate refusing to confirm its director

    Most people still believe Bush is responsible for the recession, you right-wingers refused to accept that;

Most people want to raise taxes on more rich - not top 1%, but top 5%, you right-wingers refused to accept that.

    .

The list can go on forever.

    .

But then this frivolous poll which says something about all second term presidents, you jump all over it.

What you liberals do not understand is the way our government is set up. The President is not the ultimate authority. Checks and balances keeps one triad of the government from dictating the direction of the country. I know you want to blame President Bush for the financial problems that were handed over to President Obama but, Congress was controlled by the Democrats the last two years Bush was in office. Those two years were when the deficit started to go out of sight. Still, under President Obama's first four years, the national deficit (yearly), exceeded anything in the history of the U.S. During President Obama's first two years, the deficit was at its highest (when the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress). When the GOP gained control of the house, the deficit was reduced. I am not making this up, these are facts. So, my point is, Congress by law, is the body that makes the laws, and approves any budget. If you really want to see which party is at fault for the financial mess we are in, check out who was in control of the two houses of congress when the financial burdens on the country were initiated. I agree that President Bush made some bad decisions, when it came to the financial future of the U.S., but he did not even approach the mess President Obama put us in during his first 4 years. We would be in even more trouble if the GOP was not in control of the House. I can't even imagine why the majority of Americans support President Obama's policies. The biggest problem is that most Americans believe what they hear on CNN and the rest of the liberal news media. If the GOP were in office when "fast and furious" and the fiasco in Libya occurred, the media would be all over it and calling for the President's head. With Obama in office, the media has been silent.

Imagine that, people who dont work and dont pay taxes giving an approval of yes... Feisty, You do realize that rasiing taxes is the primary "plot" the democrats have going right now? I know in Massachusetts, Deval "Mini-Me" Patrick is causing more than his "fair share" of "government-imposed suffering" of middle class families. After the 2% increase in Social Security witholdings, Patrick is suggesting another 1% on the state income Tax. Add to this discussions of imposing a "mileage tax" to hit working families who commute to work every day in the wallet.

You know, I wouldn't mind them taking this money, which could be thousands of dollars from my wallet every year going forward if it would be used to pay off the country's debt, but Patrick is planning on building a rail-line down to Cape Cod. (They tried this before and it failed), annnnnnnd......of course, "it's for the children."

A majority of teh people do NOT support his ideas, but everyone including Repubs believe in some laws assisting in gun control, but not banning guns from honest law abiding people and ammo limits etc, everyone can agree on the background checks of some sort and other restrictions . But the people DO NOT support what Obummer has proposed at all. NOR do the ysupport is immigration laws to legalize 12 million mexican citizens... Obstruction of his policies has barely been able to hold his uneducated reckless spending spree in check..

He has proven to be a skilled liar thus quite the politician..

Promising citizenship to millions of illegals to get the Latino vote.. These criminals do not deserve citizenship or food stamps or free medical care or drivers licenses? or welfare or college fund or social security and what ever else in the Federal hand out bag they can think of..

Same goes for all the people living off the system in the population centers that are over run with crime and gangs and urban decay caused by the same group of people.. A vote for Obama is a vote for free stuff like cell phones..

The Washington socialists have been positioning themselves for something.. A private police force Homeland Security which has unchecked freedom to spy on American Citizens.. They swear allegiance to the President and not the Constitution and have an EMP hardened fleet of vehicles along with millions of rounds of ammo.. The Patriot act that was to expire was renewed.. Restrictions on freedom of speech and an off switch for all Internet and television communications..

You know what I think is funny after reading most of this first post of comments? How does one president repub or dem do absolutely anything for you? Nothing, nadda, shaft, jack-sh-t. I have yet to see a president vote in favor on the public, what I think is funny is all these democrats are in favor of illegal immigrants, we'll see how in favor you are of it when they take you job for 75% less than what you make.

While I agree something needs to be done, we dont' need more workers here, why are we even trying to pass this, I don't care if they are asian, mexcian, european, we already have a mess of unemployment, why bring in more?

Also to you democrats who ever said it was the gov'ts job to provide a job for you, it's the people's responsibilities, meaning you and I to provide jobs, not the gov'ts, it's also not the gov'ts job to support you or give you healthcare, their job is to make sure you are not taken advantage of and business is done fair. When was the last time you saw fair business how did it all get out of control, HMO's, large corporations, outsourcing, yada, yada, yada. Both sides have been played for fools now you both sit here and agree that you side is the better side.

AND WHO GIVES A FLYING F-CK what the the DOW is at, and why does it even matter, we have an entire economy run on speculation that is what the DOW is, and you people don't see anything wrong with that huh, yeah as long as the DOW is good our economy is good, what kind of people are you. The stock market is another tool that people in the know can get rich off your money. You notice when the stock market dives, the rich don't suffer but it sure wipes out the middle class and lower, and we have to start over again, but funny how the rich seem to bypass that. All made possible by your DEMOCRATS and REPUBLICANS, you have over 50% of congress and house are millionaires and that percentage is slightly in favor of the democats, WHAT are you kidding me rich people helping the poor or so they say, LOL you f-cking idiots, the poor are easy votes if you give them something don't think for a minute they give a crap about the poor or you for that matter.

So tired of this crap, round and round, everyone's fault but your own, it's a wonder we got kids shooting kids, not because of the guns, but because we've got both sides rallying and agruing about who's right instead of spanking your f-cking little demon spawn and teaching them discipline.

Both sides make me sick bunch of pukes, and I could care less that they are millionaires it's the fact that they've got you all so wrapped up in their party and why it has to be like this no one stops to ask you just do it without question. I've always bucked authority and asked why which is why I love and hate this country at the same time, this countries policies and how we think people need and should be treated has become such a problem that you can no longer shake someone's hand or open a door for a lady without some sort of lawsuit or sexual harassment suit, you can't do anything anymore and I'm talking just being a normal decent human being, you can't question the system by yourself you need a mass "WE THE F-CKING PEOPLE". That is why we are in this mess because it's no longer we the people, it's you, me and him now and we all want it our way.

So tired, so tired of listening to all you people whining about this crap, how about we boot every single of these people out of office and re-write the constitution. We'll call the the "The constitution of the united states of the pussified"

You know what do me a favor and both sides kill each other off, that would leave us middle people to go about our business and actually accomplish the sh-t we want to get do in life, I can't currently because I pay 40 cents of every damn dollar I earn to pay for someone's else sh-t. Be it the poor f-cker who chooses to not get a job but suppliments is income nicely with drug money while the gov't and police tend to look away 90% of the time, or paying for some rich @!$%#s cheap sh-tty product that I can only find made by the CHINESE who have yet to make a decent product worth buying, NAME one please, anyone and I'll recant that last statement.

If I could I would bitch slap each one of you idiots back to the reality of the situation, we are in a recession caused by the same people you are defending, you notice how a lot of people lost their homes, I was one of them as well, lost 2 actually with the rental market hitting the skids in my area. Did anyone notice that the banks are still afloat and somehow all that bad debt seemed to get eaten up and insured by who? US.

A house, like a car or going to school is not a right it's a privledge, when did we forget that you earn stuff, not put it on credit, another reason we are so blind, you all bought into the american dream, well congrats you got it, 50K in debt and no job. Hope you are all happy everyone got their way, now what are you going to do about it, sit there and argue about which president f-cked up worse bush or obama, they're both idiots who couldn't save their way out of a paper bag.

You are trusting the same ppl that created this recession to fix it, who says this isn't the way they want it to go?

Ok I feel better now, rant off, I just write when I get like that, I don't proof-read or even see if it's coherent afterwards, I like to see how people to react to it raw.

Why do you need a car that will go over the speed limit or more than one beer or helping of food? Get over yourself and your gloating, Obama won already and unless his pulls a Chavez which I am sure he will try (after all they are close) you will have a Republican in office in four years. When the President, his Chief of Staff, Democratic Senators and Representatives keep telling their anti Republican lies, AND their willing accomplices in the mainstream media regurgitate the same crap, it's no wonder that the polling of 1000 adults would find that 49% have a negative view of the republican party and only 38% would have a negative view of the democratic party. HOLD ON..... that's only an 11% difference of 1000 people or 110 adults. With all the total negaitve bull$hit that is thrown at the republicans on this site and in the media ONLY 110 adults think that the republicans are worse than the democrats. You know what I think is funny after reading most of this first post of comments? How does one president repub or dem do absolutely anything for you? Nothing, nadda, shaft, jack-sh-t.

You know what the President does for me? He leads this country. Now, before you all go jack crap bananas on my post, I have to inform you that I respect the office. Other countries respect the office. We admire a leader that takes things into consideration and does Executive Decisions when necessary. I am talking about ALL presidents. While we don't always get along with all of their policies, we should definitely respect the office. That is what this country is founded on. I've had a few Presidents who really didn't jell with my thoughts, but I respected them AND their position in this country.

When people start thinking about seceding and having state militias to take out our government because their party isn't in office, I'd sincerely ask how many of you are over 14? We've had Republican and Democratic Presidents in the last 20 years and we've all survived without taking up arms against our government. Why are so many stating that is what should be done now?

This is how this country works. And to quote some old guy that was "Moses" at one point in his career, "Love it or Leave it."

If you're not part of the solution, you are definitely part of the problem.

I wonder where these people in these polls stand as far as being recipients of government funds, mentioned in the seven stages of democracy listed below. Here is a quote from monticello.org, supposedly from Thomas Jefferson:

  • "When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
  • You might also want to look up the seven stages of democracy, attributed to Alexander Fraser Tytler written over 200 years ago, and decide for yourself at what stage we currently are in, and how close we are to the end of our democracy, according to his writings. I can only hope that we do not need to have another fight against tyranny again in our country, but hope that we are able to fight for our freedom. Instead of hoping, like many other countries, that there will be a country that will come to our defense, and help us defend our freedoms.

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

  • From bondage to spiritual faith;
  • From spiritual faith to great courage;
  • From courage to liberty;
  • From liberty to abundance;
  • From abundance to complacency;
  • From complacency to apathy;
  • From apathy to dependence;
  • From dependence back into bondage. Just a brief synopsis of his writings... some people say that the Constitution was written over 200 years ago and that some of it no longer is relevant! I totally disagree, as life is uncertain and the Constitution was written to give us liberties and stop others from taking them away from us! I believe that the second amendment was written specifically to give us the right to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government! Remember the reason our country was started, and what we needed to do to get this country! I am not advocating revolution, just that we should be prepared and able to protect our rights and country! Unless you think that it will never happen or there will be another country that will come to our rescue, All you need to do is read the world news and see the turmoil our world is under, with people that are revolting against their government!!

That's an 11% difference where I come from, but then you're from the far left. Maybe numbers are different there. No numbers massaging by you and your kind, just read and COMPREHEND! Hmmmm, I wonder if the left counted the votes that got Obama re-elected?

Of course extremists still exist toward the lower edges of the bell, and they can make a lot of noise (mostly about how we should be very afraid of each other and our government), but we'll get things done in spite of them.

Well, the headline said it all! No one has hope. They are just trying to cope. So, who the hell are they polling that are giving Obama such ratings? From the real world, he has less than a 10% positive rating. Well, I should clarify, that 10% is among those who have dreams higher than being a welfare recipient. His rating among welfare recipients and those who don't want to work is around 90%.

But, if you call people at home during working hours then that is the kind of people you are going to reach.

On the positive side, those who voted to restore America to her greatness are realizing real quickly that the Republicans that they voted for aren't interested in restoring America to her greatness. That they are more interested in trying to be Obama lite, as they think that will get them re-elected, and those, have access to the money that flows through Washington so they can get rich off of the taxpayers and lobbyists.

As they say, if you want someone with real balls, elect a woman. This country needs more conservative women who are willing to tell the thugs that they aren't stupid and don't need to be given everything as second class citizens, which is what the libs think of women as.

What we really need to know is the percentage of "low information people" that were contacted by cell phone in this survey. You must also remember that this poll was conducted by a liberal (far left) news organization.

With these factors considered, these numbers are basically worthless and should not, in any way, have an influence on your opinion of this administration as was intended.

Despite all of this, these numbers reflect a nation that is divided and struggling and a leader that is unable and unwilling to work with Congress in solving our many problems.

Executive Order has become his way of leadership.

The complete data tells the same story about the negative views. @Social - Feisty is a mental case. Like most emotion-driven liberal hysterics, she can barely squeak out two sentences before hurling some nasty epithet at those who don't "think" like her (and I use the phrase think very loosely since it's more raw emotion, really). So, just ignore and move on.

In any event, I got a big fat chuckle out of the Obamavoters suddenly upset that their paychecks were smaller and their health insurance more expensive this year. The average worker earning between $25k-$50k has seen a paycheck decrease of $80 to some over $150 less a month. But you people asked for it, you voted for, so pay up and quitchawhinin'.

Record amount of households in poverty; record amount of people on welfare/food stamps (and expenditures expected to rise 80% over the next decade); record deficit spending; highest sustained unemployment since the Great Depression; first time ever credit down grading; record high sustained energy prices; skyrocketing food prices; the most college graduates living at home after graduation jobless in two generations (at least they can still be on their parent's health insurance to age 25 thanks to Obamacare...they'll need it); continued devaluation of the dollar.

Yet some how, the Obamavoters call ^that^ a success story. Pathetic.

Of course public expectations have been lowered, we have a far more divisive and arrogant Obama since the election. More finger pointing and blame, and even telling the press he will not negotiate. These are not the words of a leader. Obama has never united the country, he has done everything in his power to divide it, and for purely political gain. The Obama agenda is to destroy the Republican party in the hopes he can regain two years of Democrat control before leaving office having added more to our national debt then all previous presidents combined. The entire Obama approach is destructive not constructive, and exclusive and not inclusive. Obstruction to liberals means not giving Obama his way, but the nation needs a leader and that requires compromise. Reaching across the isle and working together is something Obama has shown to be incapable of doing, it is his way or the highway. Unfortunately it is the nation that will suffer for his inability to lead.

Below is an example of why the 2nd Amendment was included in the Bill of Rights.

The battle of Athens, Tennessee 1946 taken from wikipedia

Citizens of McMinn County had long been concerned about political corruption and possible election fraud.[1] The U.S. Department of Justice had investigated allegations of electoral fraud in 1940, 1942, and 1944, but had not taken action.[1][2] The wealthy Cantrell family essentially ruled the county. Paul Cantrell was elected sheriff in the 1936, 1938, and 1940 elections, and was elected to the state senate in 1942 and 1944, while his former deputy, Pat Mansfield, was elected sheriff.[1][2] A state law enacted in 1941 had reduced local political opposition by reducing the number of voting precincts from 23 to 12 and reducing the number of justices of the peace from fourteen to seven (including four "Cantrell men").[1] The sheriff and his deputies worked under a fee system whereby they received money for every person they booked, incarcerated, and released; the more arrests, the more money they made.[1] Buses passing through the county were often pulled over and the passengers were randomly ticketed for drunkenness, whether guilty or not.[1]

In the August 1946 election, Paul Cantrell was once again a candidate for sheriff, while Pat Mansfield sought the state senate seat.[1] After World War II ended, some 3,000 military veterans (constituting about 10 percent of the county population) had returned to McMinn County. Some of the returning veterans resolved to challenge Cantrell's political control by fielding their own nonpartisan candidates and working for a fraud-free election.[1] They called themselves the GI Non-Partisan League.[3] Veteran Bill White described the veterans' motivation:

There were several beer joints and honky-tonks around Athens; we were pretty wild; we started having trouble with the law enforcement at that time because they started making a habit of picking up GIs and fining them heavily for most anything—they were kind of making a racket out of it. After long hard years of service—most of us were hard-core veterans of World War II—we were used to drinking our liquor and our beer without being molested. When these things happened, the GIs got madder—the more GIs they arrested, the more they beat up, the madder we got ...[1]

Combat veteran Knox Henry stood as candidate for sheriff in opposition to Cantrell.[1] In advertisements and speeches, the GI candidates promised an honest ballot count and reform of county government. At a rally, a GI speaker said,

The principles that we fought for in this past war do not exist in McMinn County. We fought for democracy because we believe in democracy but not the form we live under in this county.[4]

      Battle

Polls for the county election opened August 1, 1946. About 200 armed deputies turned out to patrol the precincts—the normal complement of 15 deputies significantly augmented by reinforcements from other counties. A number of conflicts arose before the polls closed, the most serious of which was when deputy CM Wise shot and wounded a black man who was trying to vote.[3]

As the polls closed, deputies seized ballot boxes and took them to the jail. Opposition veterans responded by arming themselves and marching there. Some of them had raided the National Guard Armory, obtaining arms and ammunition.[5] Estimates of the number of veterans besieging the jail vary from several hundred[5] to as high as 2,000.[3]

When the men reached the jail, it was barricaded and manned by 55 deputies. The veterans demanded the ballot boxes but were refused. They then opened fire on the jail, initiating a battle that lasted several hours by some accounts,[3][5] considerably less by others.[6] In the end, the door of the jail was dynamited and breached. The barricaded deputies—some with injuries—surrendered, and the ballot boxes were recovered.

During the fight at the jail, rioting had broken out in Athens, mainly targeting police cars.[3][5] This continued even after the ballot boxes were recovered, but subsided by morning.[6]

      Aftermath

The recovered ballots certified the election of the five GI Non-Partisan League candidates.[6] Among the reforms instituted was a change in the method of payment and a $5,000 salary cap for officials. In the initial momentum of victory, gambling houses in collusion with the Cantrell regime were raided and their operations demolished. Deputies of the prior administration resigned and were replaced.[6]

People are right to be wary of Obama and sense that more tough times are ahead.

They voted for him because they thought Romney was worse and you can say they were correct in that perception to an extent.

But the Democrats are the stealth Republicans and masters of the sucker punch. I fear the wallop in his second terms will be slashing Social Security and Medicare....if the public wake up and stop him.

You need to read the article before you comment. 300 of the 1000 surveyed were contacted on THEIR CELL PHONES.

Come out from under that rock.

I READ the article I just didn't follow the link. My sincere apologies for THAT. I've never had a rock on me. Thanks for the insult little one.

      Stop Funding Illegals ...

Layton don't pretend to know me, I am not christian and I am not republican I am for less government intrusion in my life, I believe in evolution and life elsewhere. I am ok with your run at legalizing pot, I am for live and let live, does that sound right wing to you? So I guess that about wraps up your statement and slander as 100% B.S.

I don't know you at all nor did I pretend TO know you. My comment was about OUTCOMES for federal funding. Reading comprehension not your bag, eh?

Public lowers expectations heading into Obama's 2nd term

      BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

What took you so long America? My expectations went down for our great Republic the day Barrack Hussein won in 2008.

You had to be a damn fool not to see the enormous mistake that was made. Obviously most of this was the ignorance of Americans simply voting for Barrack Hussein to pretend that they're not racists. This time, unfortunately, they just proved their ignorance without any caveats.

Hope and Change has become "cope".

More appropriately it has been reduced to "Ropes and Chains" as we have been enslaved by Barrack Husseins incompetence and lack of leadership.

The saddest part is that so many have submitted to his class-warfare/envy meme and accepted his proposal that the best you can achieve is to be middle-class. This is the agenda of the statists that you Libbies worship because of your self-doubt about succeeding on your own.

Of course the most important issues are STILL jobs, the economy, the debt ceiling and our dysfunctional foreign policy. And what does Barrack Hussein do? He concentrates on gun control and of course nominates all men to his cabinet.

So much for "focusing like a laser" and diversity.

Liberals/Progressives continue to insist the best they can achieve is middle class as Barrack Hussein has been promoting for over a year. It's a shame that a president only encourages mediocrity rather than success. But when you spend the whole campaign demonizing success and wealth creation the Libbies have no choice than to accept the indoctrination and live with it.

As our economy will continue to stagnate the Liberals/Progressives will deflect all efforts to fix the economy by chasing all the alleged bogeymen they fear through life. Of course this will be blamed on everything and everyone but their own incompetence.

God Bless and help America. It may be our only hope as we have to cope.

To those who are so willing to toss my freedoms and liberties away for a government check and an Obama phone that also believe Barry is such a Patriot and a scholar of the Constitution, KISS MY A$$.. I see him for what he and his Communist friends are, destroyers of a nation that are trying to hammer in the final nails of Americas coffin..

What I don't get is the Democrats think Obama is making stocks rise thus signaling a growth in value of these corporations.. In actuality the rise in stock prices is almost equal to the loss in value of the Dollar on the world market.. Yes in that aspect he is making the stock market numbers go up but we are quickly approaching the tipping point where the value of a buck will sink so low that our largest creditors will seek a change in the base of the world bank.. That change will be to switch from trading internationally on the Dollar to the Chinese Yuan.. If Obama can blackmail another 4 trillion dollar boost to the debt ceiling out of the Republicans that have been blocking it and releases the 3 trillion dollars waiting at the fed. we are finished.. Several billionaires have already started selling off US stocks and several economists are calling for a crash who have had excellent track records about previous events.. The lending crash from the loopholes and lawsuit that Obama had his hand in.. Which forced banks that were FDIC hand strung or extensions of government aided lending such as Fanny and Freddie to loan to people at percentages well above the set income scale or high risk.. Big shock when the default rate went through the roof and the banks became insolvent thus needing money from the peoples grandchildrens future.. To top it off he wasted a billion dollars fronting money to businesses that screwed us like Solindra.. Wake up! America is loosing ground in the world economy that it will never get back.. Borrowing to hand out free stuff to an ever increasing and more dependant US population.. Here comes the Socialist express and Obama is the engineer..

What we really need to know is the percentage of "low information people" that were contacted by cell Obamaphone in this survey. You must also remember that this poll was conducted by a liberal (far left) news organization.

I would bet the 300 cell phones were Obama phones as the numbers are purchased in entire 9999 quantity exchange blocks by the government.. This is the same way the military PX buys them for our soldiers at a discount.. They would not dare call working people that live in the country because those poll numbers would not look so rosy for the Socialist in chief.. Republicans are crooks as well and they went along with a few bills that attacked our rights and violated the Constitution so I see no end to this crap.. Repeal the Patriot act and some of the stuff that gives dictatorial powers to the President and that would be a good start.. Stop interpreting the Constitution and calling it outdated it is well defined by its creators and freedom will never be outdated..

enemies and we’re going to reward our friends who stand with us on issues that

      are important to us,

“I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face.“

"We don't mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back."

But for Obama and their worshipers Republicans are the ones that do not want bipartisan job.

No need to worry now--it's a Lame Duck Presidency---what would anyone ever expect?

Promises. Promises should not be believed in a Second Term in Office from a President, when nothing was done in the First Term--Hope and Change has turned to sacrificing, being taxed to death, and the unknown for many people like the the Unemployed, and Seniors--

Just look at your paychecks from here on--Is it going to be gasoline or groceries this week. Look at your Unemployment Checks; watch them get more taxed, along with Social Security--we are a nation made up of mostly poverty stricken people. "O" just hasn't told the truth yet. Ask your friends, and family--many who have taken them in to live with them.

      Hey NEOCON'S

Let us not forget that it was the Bush administration that sent us down this rosey path. His policies and those passed into law by both houses don't go away just because we have a new President. It would not have mattered which party won the White House after Bush. He went to congress with his evil-doers & WMD's put two wars on credit. He and congress gave big ass breaks to wall street and gutted Federal oversight on banks. Again let us not forget it wouldn't matter which party was in control we would still be faced with this situation.

The better name for the Republican party at this time should be the Obstructionist Party.

Don't try and sell be the bill of goods that our President hasn't passed a budget......That hasn't been done in 6 years and is the responsibility of Congress, and not a function of the Executive branch, as he can only purpose a budget and laws for that matter.

So that makes the Republican party responsible for our current debt, as they have control over the check book. Show me where they don't have it (control over fiscal maters) and I'll show you where you can get prime real estate for 1.99 an acre.

Congress had a two year break from the Republican control and started getting things back on track., Notice not one Republican turned down any of the Stimulus money. Look at the Republican controlled states.....They pay the lowest in Federal taxes and yet get back more than they put in......how is that fair to the rest of the nation? The Republican party will do and say anything to try and make the President look bad.....At any cost (per their own words).

Remember when Bush was in office if anyone said anything against his policies you where tagged as anti American.....How is what your doing any different?

Re draw the district lines in the Democrat favor or start some voter blocking, pull the same crap and see if the Obstructionist Party doesn't pitch a bitch and call for blood.

You Noecon's are a joke....and everyone knows it. If you still want to stick up for the upper 1% fine just have your Representative & Congress people quit asking for federal dollars & pork.

As far as welfare....better look to see who's states are getting more & have some of the lowest wages in the country....Yup it's the red states...So go ahead call for all these social cuts and see if your rich neocons can support you then. Ask them if they are going to give you a job picking up trash at one of the vacant buildings they own that they where leasing to the local welfare office.

I find this terribly interesting. How does a president, which had an approval rating closer to 30% before the election some how miraculously have an approval rating around 50%. It's not like he has done anything between then and now. In my mind he has just gone worse. He further shows evidence he knows nothing about the economy and a balanced budget. He now focuses on gun regulation when he should be focusing on the government spending and the debt ceiling. But he has the audacity to use little children to promote a chain of bills that will do nothing to improve the safety of those said children. The president is a joke. In the past week I have heard nothing good about what the president is doing. It's even worse than what it was when he was trying to get elected. I think the polls are clearly not an accurate rating of what the country truly believes.

Stevie boy when are you going to wake up and smell the roses on the rear of the last four years. Typical lib can't take credit for anything bad. You will blame till the day you die, go ahead and cheerlead for the party of NO that is the left wing liberal democratic party that knows nothing of a budget (that would be your senate controlled wing not the congress), can't create one only knows how to spend what they can't back up, put themselves in the elite status and get you vagrants to keep voting for them with their week minded jedi lies you fall for. Please try and drive out of that fog your in and start thinking for yourself and not listen to Rachel. You guys love to twist everything into your own story line and ignore the truth. Part of that truth for me is neither party is really worth spit they lie to take all of your hard earned money and future and blow it on their golden parachute elitist retirements and permanent healthcare that we don't qualify for. An over bloated government and retirement for all of them and a free paycheck for those who won't try to earn their own. Now they want to try and take away my liberties due to a few nutjobs and falsehoods about gun laws that don't work. Your blind as a bat. The government yours and mine but mostly the left who have no thought of anyones freedoms unless they are in common with their agenda, like gay marriage and legalizing weed are the problem. They are the biggest wasters of money and cause of our biggest national tragedy of anything to hit the headlines. The biggest group of criminals in any corporation reside in political office and you gloat over them. Tread on anyones rights as long as they don't match yours, let your children become pawns for the cause, the misguided cause who's real agenda is raping our constitution and rights and freedoms all in the name that you just don't understand or don't agree with them. Criminals don't obey laws and bans are about control, control that will only affect those who are law abiding and will cause more to become criminals because they will not abide by new restrictions. How about the millions that will be out of jobs by these new laws, how about the devistation to certain peoples collections by these bans. How about you can't sell your car because it will break the speed limit, maybe that should be taken away, or your right to a second helping of food because your fat, Cuomo is already half way there with his soda rules in NY. This boils down to control over the peasants and if you are too blind to see that then you should take that cowboy hat off your pic because you certainly aren't a cowboy and definitely not an american at heart. Get yourself a hat with a red star in the center it will be more becoming of your political beliefs and last but not least, get over the past and at least live within the last four years because your party of living on bills they can't back up will doom your children so be sure and let them know you support it and take no fault for your actions, it is after all what your party stands for. I do agree with one thing it wouldn't matter which party is in office we have what we have at the time but at least the right wanted to try and stop the insanity whereas this party wants to advance the debt. Instead of taking care of and raising the revenue for those who don't you should be taking care of those who have the passion to work and take care of themselves when it's time for retirement. Obama promised no new taxes, that is the biggest falsehood of this administration, by all means tax the rich more but I don't consider $250k a year rich. What they are in fact doing is screwing you in the back door with the hidden taxes that your left wing media doesn't care to report on, it's all in the closet rape by the left.

Feisty Feisty Feisty...I understand your strong feelings toward your party. I understand the Republicans strong feelings towards our party. What I don't understand, is that you have given NO argument as to why BHO is even allowed to lead this once-great country. You say NOTHING, but you have the gall to call us "obstructionists" and you call us "racists" and you call us "little girls" and oh yeah, my favorite - Nazis. This is the Democratic party in a nutshell. NO ideas, NO plans, and NO solutions. All you have left is to attack, discredit, slander, character assassiate and BLAME. This is also what "Mister" Obama has run on all these years - the 3-D platform: Deceive, Deny and Deflect. It may be an old argument, but it is TRUER today than ever before. Why do you not see this? Lets take, for example, that President Bush was to blame for the defecits, okay? Now, Mr. Obama had 2 years of a super-majority when he got elected. What did he do. He INCREASED defecit spending, when he could have told Americans to tighten their belts and found REASONABLE ways to tax us, cut out loopholes, etc...HE DID NOTHING. His main objective was The Affordable Health Care Act, or Obamacare. He stole money from Medicare and Medicaid to pay for it, when 65% of Americans were against this 2,017-page, cleverly disguised "TAX". Then he rammed it through Congress in the middle of the night, during Christmas break. There is only one person to blame for this, and it is Mister Obama. Oh, and this whole "Nazi" ugliness...do you remember what Adolph Hitler said back in 1939? " To conquer a NATION, one must first DISARM its citizenry..." Do you know who else's slogan, besides Mister Obama, was "FORWARD'...? Yep, Hitler again.... and we all know what happened to Germany.

Okay, I have said my peace. Now let the insults fly from the left...

The Article written here has inflated" Obama's image with the American people.

Of course, we know that things and issues are unresolved. He making himself the appointee to use his Executive Order on everything presented to Congress and himself. Congress and the House of Representatives, literally do not exist for a VOTE.

It's a one man Presidency--no bi partisanship (yes, the Republicans, many Democrats have tried, but have been beaten down) by his threats of sending Legislation through without their approval. (Executive Order again) How can we have a Democracy if all decisions are slammed through, and not read by our Senators or Representatives. Of Course Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid know what is in the Bills--but they cannot tell us, until after it has been voted for--no Vote, How many Executive Orders?--

What will his Legacy be. Killing Osama Bin Laden?---Telling us that Al-Qaeda was demolished, when in Algeria Al-Qaeda is in full force again in Africa--? Borrowing 16,000,000,000,000 dollars. Where did the money go?---Most States are Bankrupt--The Article states he is up in the polls through the People's Favor.

Slanting the truth. We all have felt the truth for the last 4 1/2 years---worried about our financial future, and how this Country will be reconstructed into something that never resembled the most giving, non-Isolationist Super Power. with hopes, dreams for our kids, grandkids, and future generations living in a lively Economy--they will be living at a lower level of quality living that no one would have ever imagined. "It's the money, Stupid"---stop Spending to cover the inaction of tackling big problems. No better than the Bush Administration. No better.

Sorry Marchant.... President Obama has used executive privilege less than any president since these privileges were granted, less than half the times Bush did. Try looking up a few facts. Our immediate financial future was screwed before the end of the Bush adminsitration and now things are slowly and steadily improving. And BlowbamaDouche (sounds like a great title for you) President Obama is leading our country because he WON THE ELECTIONS!!! What a concept! That is the way this country has worked since the constitution was written. So far as no ideas and no plans.... I'm afraid you're describing the GOP and not the Obama Administration. All I've heard for four years is complaints and whining from losing Republicans and NOT ONE CONSTRUCTIVE IDEA!!! All your party has come up with is to pledge themselves to oppose anything the President suggests even if it brings down their country! Why don't you stop whining and start thinking? Compromise is NOT a four letter word.

This is just flat out rediculous. Look at yourselves! You're like a bunch of f$%king five year olds! My president's better then yours...my party is better then yours...

      Give it a rest.

Yes, President Obama has been reelected by a small majority vote. Congratulations. It does not negate the fact that the article says that people don't expect much out of him. Why? He hasn't given us anything to believe in so far. All I heard in 2008 was "change is coming". I suppose to point out the fact that change is inevitable would be pointless. Change is the only constant in the universe. Based on that, I didn't expect much out of him in the first place. He's the same professional politician we've been voting in for years. A lot of hot air and promisses that amount to nothing. Oh, wait...they did vote themselves a raise, I suppose the chainge in their pay rate was what he was talking about.

The Fiscal Cliff? Both sides, without exception, are to blame!! You cannot argue the problem, and then try to remove yourself from it in the eleventh hour Mr. President! The spending habbits of your party are out of control sir. You still cannot simply program all the problems away. I know some of your supporters think you can just wave that magic pen of yours like their fairy godmother, but the truth is you should not spend more then you make...errr....you should not spend more then you take from us!! Continually raising taxes and saying it is for the "betterment of the people" and using it to farther the ends of our government is what lead us to the Revolutionary War. Continuing to spend my children's future away is what will, eventually, lead us to another civil war. I don't know about you, but I don't relish the idea of fighting with my younger or older brother who live in states other then the one I am in. So put your magic pen away for a while, at least until you have the money in the coffer to pay for what you are writing!

Using the DOW for a benchmark of presidency and the economy in the US? Really? Let's examine how the DOW really works. The DOW-Jones Industrial averages are made of of movements of a combination of stocks and government bonds. When we have a bull market, people are buying stocks in industry (industry is something you libs call "greedy", "bad", "the rich", and several other things...I call it what pays my bills). What you may not realize is why people invest in industry. Because it makes money. If a business shows profits, people invest to get a share of those profits. How does a business show more profit? By lowering overhead. Outsourcing. Sending jobs overseas. So when said business pays someone in China $110/week, instead of paying a US worker $14/hour, it shows a fairly nice profit. Wouldn't you agree? Oh, wait...we're in a bull market right now, aren't we? OF COURSE THE DOW IS UP!! ALL THE EMPLOYERS ARE PAYING PEOPLE OVERSEAS AND ELIMINATING OVERHEAD!!! WAKE UP!!! But Obama is doing a great job....

Bev, Fiesty...you're both in Chicago. That alone speaks volumes to me. Someone suggested that you go outside and play. You're too scared to go out and play in the murder capital of the country. And you guys elected him to be your mayor? Yeah, good luck with that...

Tell you what, I'll stop talking badly about Obama when he does a few things:

      1. Allows me to live my life, in my country, in accordanence with it's economic system (we are a capitolist society...not a socialist one). That means, if the rich guy did what he could to be sucessful, you don't punish that! That means, if I do all I can to grow a business (investing my time, my capitol, my resourses, and my life), I should not have to bow to some dumb, special interest group that thinks they deserve a share.
      2. Allows me to live my life according to the Constitution of the United States of America. No obstructions. That means an end to all this political correctness crap. That means an end to thirty plus years of the government telling me how to live my life. That means an end to supporting the lazy. Allow me to speak my mind, keep my weapons, actually have a speedy trial and the right to face my accusor (not some district attorney!), have a reasonable bail (not everyone is a millionaire!) (not to say that I have experience in either of those with the exception of traffic violations...it would just be nice to have those if I need them). And lastly,
      3. Stop using the media as a tool to spread the biased infection that has become our government! Just because you say something is bad for me, does not make it so. It wasn't too long ago that eggs were bad for me...then they found out that a POW survived for years on them. I won't deny that some things I do are unhealthy. However, here in the land of the free we have choice. Or is that something only reserved for those who vote for you?

Now, some will say "he's just some disgruntled white guy". Maybe. But having to label me a "white guy" and thinking I have a problem with a black...errrr....African American president (are you African or American...you have to be American to be president. Drop the f$%king labels and just accept that you are American or go be African, or Mexican, or German, or Italian, or whatever. MAKE A CHOICE!!!!!)(And we wonder why we're so divided...WAKE THE F$%K UP!!!). Truth be told, I don't think much of his policies or what he's done for the country so far. I don't know the man personally, so I can't really form any kind of opinion. You see, I was raised to believe that a man is a man...color is symantics.

moshuluu and meanoleman seem to be proud of service. I was 101st. You both seem to be extremists on both sides of the line. Gentlemen, we are brothers under the same banner...can we not be patriots of that banner as well? You swore an oath to support and defend The Constitution of the United States of America. I'd love to know both your thoughts on what is currently going on in the government and if it is fulfilling the promise of the Constitution.

garbageman-2736857, notice that noone has touched your post throughout all this conversing. The reason? Because it is terrifying to look at the country and realize where we really are. And now we're limiting the people's ability to rise up and stop it...

How can anyone in this country support Obama?? He has not had a balanced budget or even a proposal for 4 years. Our deficit is approaching $17 trillion. He refuses to cut spending. He is demanding to raise our debt limit, even though he was quoted 7 years ago as saying any need for that just shows we have no leadership. He has ruined our children's future and he has instilled class warfare as the beginning of his socialistic plan to bring us down. He has the liberal press giving him a pass on everything he does. He has misdirected our focus from the economy to gun control. Yes, the market is up, but our recovery is no where. Companies are holding back due to Obama and his policies which makes the market increase a moot point. Obama refuses to work with congress, even though he ran on that premise....again. It's either his way or the highway....or in other words...executive privilege. That's what I call working together. How about cutting our spending, lowering our deficit and showing America that you do care about it?

Talk, talk, talk. Insult, insult, insult. So many "experts", so many ignorant posters. Some posts are right on, some are three french fries short of a "Happy Meal". One thing is very obvious - we are a terribly divided nation.

The last election, I was sitting in front of the TV, watching the votes being counted, when all of a sudden, the news media announced "Obama wins the Election". I am in Montana. Our voting had just stopped, with only 11% of the votes counted. California only had about 7% of their votes counted. I'm sure all the other states around me had but a tiny fraction of the votes counted. I read that Florida had tens of thousands of voters who could not vote, due to the lack of places to vote. Many folks beaten down by the storm,"Sandy" had no communications, which I'm sure cost some voters their chance. And Obama won. He won by the electoral votes, as I understand. Some states have more electoral votes than others, and Obama campaigned basically in those states.

I have always been told, "your vote counts". It obviously doesn't when the election is decided before all votes are counted. I did not vote for Obama - I did not like his policies, nor his track record, coming from the most politically corrupt state in the Union. I did not like that he was a civil rights lawyer - I felt he might be partial to low income, down - trodden citizens, and against the wealthy.

I think we should abolish the electoral votes, and leave the voting to every American citizen. Period. I think we should impeach any President who refuses to lead Congress, find mediation, and solve our problems, rather than push blame on everyone but himself.

All all of you who voted him back in can take credit for it.

Does it matter which party you support, when it comes to paying off the debt, the pockets of all of us will be hit equally hard. Don’t think you will be spared. We are all swimming in the same caldron.

But whichever way you look at it and whoever you blame for our predicament, things aren’t looking particularly good right now and we are not going anywhere fast. The President’s second term is taking on a similar shape to his first term. In the first term he was focusing on his re-election and blaming his predecessor, a costly way to run the nation indeed.

What and who he will be blaming for lack of progress during his second term, if things don’t work out, is anyone’s guess. Right now the GOP is in his sights, but if he continues to run the country from the sidelines, the mud will stick to his shoes. I think he is beginning to realize that delivering speeches and giving pep talks is one thing, getting things done is another!

History takes no sides, only the facts and that’s what he will be remembered by. Failures are looked upon harshly.

I’ll be honest, I am not his fan, nonetheless he is the President and I wish him all the best during his second term.

I sure hope the President does well this term, we could all stand for some good news. Perhaps if he learned from his first 4 years. Especially the part where he is name-calling, blaming and villifying the other side, and then is surprised when they don't want to work with him! Could you imagine if he was a co-worker - who would want to be on his team?

If not for Republican obstructionism this country would already be bankrupt. The 47% would have their FREE checks stop, our military dismantled, we would be 1-2 trillion more in debt, and this country would be that further to being socialist. I am not condoning the Republicans actions as it apparent their is a lack of leadership and platform, but they are doing what the constitution tries to provide for and that is balance.

Obama has little regard for the constitution, the bill of rights, having budgets so ti sets forth expectations of spending...no this president would have already ruined this country especially with the likes of those internal terrorists like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid two despicable manipulating snakes. You don't pass agenda in the middle of the night like the unaffordable health care act (3x projected cost not even implemented). Provide amnesty only for Mexicans and not all immigrants. His plans ALL revolve around spending other peoples money. Obama is an elitist and isn't afraid to show it. He MUST accept responsibility for something in heirs presidency still none...for Benghazi, Fast and Furious, the debt, democratic obstructionism. Kick the can is now and Olympic sport for DC. Shame on him and this congress they all need to be fired/impeached and these corrupt two party systems destroyed. Repeal Corpoarations are people act to end unlimited Soros funded campaign contributions. Identify elitists NWO supporters and Eltitist Zionist Jews in our government and abolish them from office.

JD and the other liars and disbelievers on this page. Obama won with a 5,000,000 more votes than your guy and killed him in the electoral college. Polls show is approval rating is double that of republicans in congress and yet you sit here and just yell.

This vine does not represent American voters or even the opinion of Americans. They hate your ignorance, they hate your lying distorting remarks about the President. You make yourselves look like NUTS! Over guns, over the budget, and how you disregard and hate of the poor. Not just poor minorities but poor people of all stripes.

You will have to live with it for the next four years, and, if you keep talking the way you are now, with this everyman for himself and total disregard for any kind of human decency will impale your party for the next election in 2016.

Your party is full of mean, uncaring people who are just flat out cowards and liars.

Even with all your schemes to hold down the democratic vote you still got creamed. All that damn money you spent and the American people voted for the sane guys and women.

I am sick of 29% of the country bullying the rest of us to go along with their nightmare vision of America. You don't like this country and this president than get the hell out.

            Social distortion

Your one of those that simply don't understand that just because a new president is elected doesn't mean that all of the previous policies and laws go away.

Bush had us in a 10 Trillion dollar Deficit even before Obama took office & spent the surplus. That is very relevant.

Congress controls the money.....It is their spending habits that have placed us here...Not that of the President.

Again the purse strings are not a function of the President, however when Bush did his state of the union and convinced both houses that there was a need to go to war he lied. That is a fact that we all know now.

Myself nor anyone on this side is blaming Bush 100%, but the reality is that is what started us down this path. The idea is for you guys to acknowledge that fact and move forward.

Again, you might want to speak to your Republican friends....The programs they want to cut will affect the red states the most as they are the ones that benefit the most from these programs. Look at facts please. Red states pay less in Federal tax and get more back in federal money than they put in. How do you think that is going to equate when it comes to cutting programs? You think your hurting now....Just wait.

You have the right to your opinion...But let's try to base it in fact not fiction. Our president doesn't need excuses....He needs support from both sides of the isle.

Please look hard and deep and ask yourself how would a Republican President have made any difference after Bush? How would he have changed the financial course? If you have the answer to those then please forward them on to your neocon buddy's in DC, cause right now they haven't got a clue.

Actually, it is Obama himself who has lowered the public's expectations ! After witnessing 4 years of his divisive strategy, rapidly accelerating national debt and "still high" unemployment ... the American people know to lower their expectations substantially ! LOL !!

If Obama goes seriously extreme again, expect a mid-term change of mind from the American voting electorate once again ... as it did in 2010 !

I fully understand ...Please do not fool yourself into believing you know anything about me. My point was.... I have never witnessed a President that relied on blaming his predecessor as much as Obama and his administration has.

Bush had us in a 10 Trillion dollar Deficit even before Obama took office & spent the surplus

Ok, what is the deficit now? What will it be after the debt ceiling is raised a second time? But keep deflecting back to Bush.

Myself nor anyone on this side is blaming Bush 100%

Great! But the level of accountability for this President is at an all time low! Hell, even the media is beginning to notice it!! Google "media bias for Obama"

            Our president doesn't need excuses

So why have we heard so many?

your Republican friends......... your neocon buddy's in DC

Again, you do not know anything about me, I find your ass*umption that I am automatically a Republican, because I voice that I am not happy with the way this country is going, typical defense of the left and to be humorous at best. I also find it humorous that anytime anyone says anything on Newsvine that disagrees with Obama, they are instantly labled an extreme right, gun nut, tea bagging, racist, sore loser, neocon, etc, etc.....This country is more divided than ever....God help us all....

The Article says he's "Likeable". No President can do their job on likeability---people who voted used this as their main point. Vote on Substance and Leadership capabilities.

Voters MUST read, educate themselves for a Candidate before voting in the voting booth, or using an Absentee Ballot--reading everything about the person, knowing their background, friend associations, and their ideals for America. Nothing is for "free".

Too bad most Americans are gullible--seek the truth, and you may find it--Obama is trying, but he just cannot connect with both parties, or the People of the US--Clinton finally did this, listening to his people, and turned out to be a Brilliant President. Obama, take heed, for it may be too late. Act instead of reacting on small subjects, or people out of the Public eye who have done wrong. It's the big Picture that spans the needs of the American people who are now desperate, with an unknown future--taking no risk, because of the seemingly low expectations..

I'm reposting this because it makes so much sense and should be reposted over and over until half of the nation understands it. If you agree with this repost it.

              @ garbageman (1.100)

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship

Agree 1000%. The mechanic by which this can occur is simple: the voter (or able-bodied citizen) is not required to pay in full for what he votes for. The difference is printed and borrowed.

If I were president, I would do my best to force payment from the able-bodied. If they can't pay their share, I would send them to work camps or civil service. Perhaps that would make them give pause at the voting booth?

Alas, we are now at the "apathy to dependence" stage.

It's not about a party or an office, nothing a politician has done in the last 50 years should warrant anyone's respect they ALL have spit on our rights and sold us to the higher power, MONEY. You think I'm part of the problem, maybe you should look closer. So the fact that the congress has it's lowest approval rating, since they started taking rating, they deserve respect? Really tell me why? So we had effectivly 2 people to choose from out of the what 200million amercians that didn't run for office? How does that deserve respect, the gov't isn't going to fix the problem, they are part of it, as soon the federal reserve took over in what 1913 we lost our gov't our freedom to MONEY, the gov't is just another pawn in it, they have no desire to fix the problem, so why should they get my respect again?

I was wrong when I said what have they done for me, it should have been US. They've never done a damn thing for me and I dont' expect them too, I can take care of myself, but I do worry about the US as a whole, we need a US to be a country. Our constitution wasn't set up for a federal reserve there is a reason lincoln tried for the greenback and why I think it was Adam booted out another wanna be Federal reserve, they knew the consequences of what an independent money institution that can create money out of thin air could do. And they where right we are living in it now.

So maybe instead of pointing a fingers at a side that doesn't even factor in the solution maybe start by finding a new party. Oh that's right it's not possible because we are only allowed 2 right, lol and sigh.

You people who really think there's a difference between Democrat and Republican, Conservative and Liberal, Left and Right, are over-educated idiots. Over 70 years of everyone bitching about change and thinking that when "their guy" get's in, things will happen! The ONLY change that's been occurring is that with EVERY administration, the People have had more and more of their rights stripped away. And now everybody wastes HOURS of their days on threads like this showing just how "intelligent", (and in many cases, unintelligent), they are... And you forget the first rule of winning a battle... "Divide and Conquer". The battle has been in play for YEARS, and most of you all are missing it. Especially the ones who let their emotions dictate what they THINK the law should be, rather than to effect change through the processes provided. The only difference between Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, et al., is how they spell their friggin' names. Just like a game of volleyball, each one setting things up for the next one to spike...

"Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here... like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There's a nice campaign slogan for somebody: 'The Public Sucks. @!$%# Hope." -- George Carlin on politicians

"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." -- George Santayana

"Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are there upon absolved from any further obedience." -- John Locke (1632-1704) '2nd Treatise of Government', (1690)

In November, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that a record 47,102,780 individuals receive food stamps.

One in seven Americans now receives food stamps. To keep up with the demands of the burgeoning program, spending has thus "doubled from roughly $39 billion in 2008 to an estimated $85 billion in 2012," and nearly quadrupled since 2000. According to Heritage, "Today, the food stamps program is one of the largest and the fastest growing of the roughly 80 welfare programs funded by the federal government."

Imagine where we would be if the Dems would have gotten off their butts and did something the first 2 years of this presidents 1st term. when they had super majority. or even the last 2 years of the Bush administration. They did nothing, that's why they lost control of the House, and almost lost the Senate in 2010.

If the Democrats wanted to effect real change, they had their chance. And I'm not just talking about the first two years of Obama's term. President Bush signed many of the bills the Democrat congress passed. A lot of the actions he gets a bad rap for were approved by the democrats. But I guess liberals would have rather had him just sit back and veto everything, so they could then turn around and call him an obstructionist.

Amen brother! I don't remember President Bush, or any other GOP President blaming his predecessor for the problems he had to deal with. Now, 4 years after President Bush left office, he is still blamed for everything from the deficit to the latest natural disaster.

Do people really not remember the rightwing blaming Clinton during the Bush years? Heck, during the mortgage collapse, they were blaming Jimmy Carter!

The early Bush REcession technically started in March of 2001. But look at this article from 2008:

Undeterred, the Republican Party and its echo chamber have for years continued to perpetuate the myth that President Bush "inherited a recession" from Bill Clinton. As Media Matters detailed, the sound bite was introduced before George W, Bush even took the oath of office. On December 3, 2000, Dick Cheney told Tim Russert "I think so" when asked if "we're on the front edge of a recession." Within days, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ("the Bush-Cheney administration should be planning on having inherited a recession as the farewell gift from Clinton") and House Majority Leader Dick Armey ("this new president may inherit a recession") followed suit. By August 2002, Mitch Daniels, Bush's head of the Office of Management and Budget, announced on Fox News:

"He [Bush] inherited that recession from the previous administration. Case is closed."

Predictably, the drumbeat from the Bush team was reproduced with zero distortion from the always reliable media. While Fox News' Sean Hannity made the argument during the November 2002 mid-term election "this president -- you know and I know and everybody knows -- inherited a recession," CNN made the case for him two months earlier. On September 18th, 2002, CNN's John King announced, "That's why the president, in almost every speech, tries to remind voters he inherited a recession." Five days later, his colleague Suzanne Malveaux regurgitated the same line, reporting, "[Bush] took up that very issue earlier today, saying -- reminding voters that the administration inherited the recession."

To be sure, the Republican propaganda effort worked its magic. In 2004, pollster Geoff Garin showed that 62% of Americans believed the demonstrably false claim that an "economic recession actually began during Bill Clinton's administration, before George W. Bush took office."

Sean Hannity, four years into the Bush admin, blaming Clinton (and remember - Clinton handed Bush a $300 billion/year surplus, the Stock market at 10,300 and climbing to 11,300 Bush's first 5 months, and 4% unemployment):

"Clearly, we're out of the recession that President Bush inherited." (4/2/04)

"Stop me where I'm wrong. The president inherited a recession, the economic impact of 9/11 was tremendous on the economy, correct?" (4/6/04)

"[President George W. Bush] did inherit a recession." (5/3/04)

"[W]e got [the weak U.S. economy] out of the Clinton-Gore recession." (5/18/04)

"We got out of the Clinton-Gore recession." (5/27/04)

"We got out of the Clinton-Gore recession." (6/4/04)

And while we are on the subject of blame, there were tons of blame heaped on Obama for the stock markets slide during Obama's first 6 weeks (before bottoming out at 6600 in March). Look at these quotes and think - if it was Obama's fault that the DJIA fell for his first 6 weeks, isn't it to Obama's credit that it has risen for the last 4 years?

CNN's Lou Dobbs, the self-proclaimed "Mr. Independent," announced on March 9, 2009, "This is now the Obama bear market." That same day, the Wall Street Journal declared, "The dismaying message here is that President Obama's policies have become part of the economy's problem." House Minority Leader John Boehner was among the Republican leaders bemoaning "the Obama economy" and insisted that since Obama's inauguration six weeks earlier, "Certainly the stock market hasn't acted very well."

On March 8, 2009, Fox News host Chris Wallace asked an uncomfortable John McCain, "Can this now fairly be called the Obama bear market?" That propaganda only echoed the Republican talking points regurgitated two days earlier by Bloomberg in article titled, "'Obama Bear Market' Punishes Investors as Dow Slumps" and the Wall Street Journal rant, "Obama's Radicalism is Killing the Dow." On March 6th, Sean Hannity was nearly orgasmic as he trumpeted the declines on Wall Street:

And our headline this Friday night: Welcome to Day Number 46 of "Obama's Bear Market." Now, that's what some news organizations are calling it tonight as the Dow Jones industrial average actually finished up about 30 points today at the end of a disastrous week.

According to Bloomberg News, the Dow has now dropped faster during the first six weeks of the Obama administration than any other administration in at least 90 years. But is that a surprise after weeks of talking down the economy?

                  In 4 years -

                  1. Country back from the economic brink. DOW doubled at 13000+.

                  2. American Auto industry saved. Now turning profit.

                  3. Job less rate down by 3 percent. Jobless claim least in 5 years.

                  4. Osama bin laden - D_E_A-mother@!$%#ing_D

oh and he won the presidency TWICE.

The Great Recession will forever belong to bush/cheney, and it might take 25 years to recover from this republicon disaster also.

Bush used executive orders 17 times, Obama has used them less than other presidents in their terms! He never changed one law that changes how a person is accepted upon applying for welfare! The welfare lines started becoming quite long in 2008, google it! 2011 welfare went down by billions of dollars, USgovernmentspending.com. All debts occured have been signed and approved by congress, no president is ever given a blank check! Reagan, Bush, and Romney all supported the 1994 assault rifle ban, which was upheld as Constitutional by the Supreme Court which only had one appointed democrat judge! Romney went on to sign into law, as assault rifle ban in his state as Gov, I guess it's a liberal thing!

This arrogant narcissistic Emperor in Chief made a lot of promises for his second term but as expected, is now back pedaling and waffling from these lies which were just that for political reasons. The economy and unemployment are still at a standstill no matter how much the Lame Left Media tries to portray it otherwise.

The national debt was a complete financial catastrophe from his first term becoming even worse should this dysfunctional socialist spender gets his way. He and his ilk are what's wrong dividing this country even further than ever before.

I keep reading about libs gloating over Obama being elected twice. Are they proud that they are members of the most uneducated, poorest, minority group which includes other minorities such as blacks and latinos? Obama went after only those people he could either con or make promises to. Now, we have almost more of this group than we do tax paying working people. When Obama was running, he went to great lengths at his rallies to attract voters. His first visit to O.S.U. was to accommodate 20,000 students. When only 12,000 showed, they got nervous. So, the next visit, Obama brought a rock star, had free pizza and free bus trips to go register and later to go vote early. What a swell guy. He gave many poor people, mainly blacks, free cell phones which bought a lot of votes. His promise to make citizens out of illegals and parents of anchor babies swayed the latino vote. Yes, he was surely elected on his past performance. Oh wait....he didnt run on that because it was so bad. He knew exactly what he was doing when he targeted the young, poor, minority and the uneducated. So...go ahead and gloat libs. You should feel proud of the group you are in. Don't forget to accept responsibility for the out of control debt, out of control spending and Obama's socialistic policies. It will be too late to find someone to blame everything on.

What amazes me is that I see so many different types of people through my job and almost all of them are against Obama and nearly everything he has done, are disappointed in his ability to do anything more than blame bush, see raising the debt ceiling as no different than raising the credit limit on the credit card of a unemployed person with no idea of responsibility, dont want him going around congress etc, and yet these so called polls say the opposite. I guess if you only poll liberal audiences you will only get liberal opinions, and since the liberal age average is much lower than the conservative age average and many wise sayings about wisdom with age, I think I'll disbelieve all the support Obama the king, the nobel peace prize nominee who was nominated for no more than hopes and dreams, gets from these so called polls. They are obviously faked. And it isnt really that hard to fake one. Simply make all your calls in various known liberal locals and you will get a liberal majority even if it isnt the true majority.

It drives them crazy, Layton. After all of that effort to have this man removed, they couldn't do it. I bet blood pressure medicine sales are at an all time high in red states.

sry blackcatwhitecat im not a repub but nice try. Your the biased one. I dont like either side. The dems are full of liars and thieves who only want freedom if they are the ones in control of it, the repubs dont care about control as long as they can profit from it. I simply point out the garbage as I see it truthfully. The libs though are the more blind of the 2 at least the repubs realize the entire gov't is corrupt and try to pick the lesser of evils, the libs really believe that each freedom we lose and each entitlement we gain is because the dem congress pres etc love us soooooooo much. But as I said nice try, but try looking in a mirror for your bias before you try to falsly accuse me.

You need to get further into to poll. Each category shows people favor keeping guns out of the wrong hands but not the ham handed crap that Obama has asked for from congress. Dustbuster= Typical liberal pick and choose a number and cook it to suit your agenda.

It's funny how this poll is conducted by the greatest liberal spin machine in the land, (NBC/Wash. post). I find it really hard to swallow this trash when quite litterally EVERY person I have talked to in the last 2 months has expressed a desire for the government to leave gun rights alone and focus on the economy and the national debt. Now don't get me confused with some locked in recluse either. I have probably spoken to as many people as the polsters in that time, as I am VERY social and actually do work that puts me in the public venue constantly. I have YET to encounter anybody who actually falls for let alone fully supports this crap. They all are scared of our government, scared of our current administration, scared of our current economical situation and the outlook for the future, scared that the current administration is going to make it worse and that we will lose more of our freedoms in the process, and scared that the sheep are going to just follow right along with the program until there is no way back.

Facts are facts, I have yet to talk to ANYBODY who thinks that more debt is a good thing in any way for this country. I have yet to talk to anybody who thinks that giving out more free sh-t to anybody is good for this country. They all say that to do so is just going to sink this country farther into the quagmire. None of them care who got us to this point, the time has come for it to stop and if this group of jackasses can't get it done then we need someone who will.

How can anybody think that going further into debt is good for this country or the "citizens" therein? Raise the debt ceiling? HELL NO! Cut off the money and let this ship find its own ballast level and right itself over time. Otherwise we are facing sure national bankruptcy, and severe economic disaster. When that happens this country will cease to exist.

As for gun control? Let us go back to Sandy Hook. The Chief justice correspondent for NBC just a couple of days ago stated openly on the Today show that he has since found out that the shooter NEVER had ANY longarms (meaning rifles of any kind, which includes AR type fake assault style weapons). He stated that the reports were false and that the shooter had 4 handguns which he carried into the school with him. The actual fake assault style weapon was found locked in the trunk of his car. Then when you consider that only 351 of the over 9000 murders by firearm last year were committed with a rifle of any kind, it's just assinine to jump on the Assault Weapons ban for that reason. You all do notice that 8,649 of those murders were committed with a sidearm (pistol) don't you? The only reason the government is going after assault weapons is because they are a threat to the take over effort of those who would steal your freedom. If any of them were sincere about gun control the conversation would be about pistols being in the hands of criminals, not Assault style rifles in the hands of law abiding citizens. Get a clue dumbass and keep your progressive libtard sheeple comments to yourself.

It's ALL just a bunch of indoctrination through Propaganda.

We have educational programs for young & old, but what does the left focus on? GUN BANS

In every situation the left preaches EDUCATION IS THE KEY...... except when it comes to firearms

Texas got over 100,000 signatures asking for secession. I have signed two petitions supporting the President's plan for gun control. One has over 300,000 signatures and the other is around 250,000 signatures.

Most Americans want more gun controls.

Don't take my word for it. Just look at the data. Look at the shape of the country on Bush's first day vs his last. And do the same with Obama. There is no comparison.

They all seem to forget that Bush also had a 52% approval rating going into his second term and in his first was almost at 90% in 2001. Yet they all scream at the top of their lungs "Mr. Obama has a 55% approval rating right now." What they also fail to see is that he was just over 60% in his beginnings.

I am relieved that most of the commentators tonight have nothing to do with the running of any country,in fact I can't believe that most of you can run your own household. Lighten up!

Are you also forgetting the USA was attacked on 9/11 and over 3000 people lost their lives and millions of Americans no longer felt safe in their own country. If the US had not responded, can you even grasp the consequences.

I really feel that if my hard earned tax dollars are paying for psychiatric care and meds for those of you with somewhat bizarre mood swings-which incline you to attack (and quite cowardly) verbally bash others here, you could have the decency to stay on those much needed meds.

I have never reported anyone on NV for personal attacks but Feisty's comments to Jim are so horribly rude and ill conceived that enough is enough.

I did make a complaint and pasted these comments to NewsVine Staff. If nothing is done (and I expect nothing to be done) I will after 4 years here delete my account. Yes, feel free to jump for joy.

What I see here and everywhere for the past year on the Vine is that those of you maintaining that you are here to talk and have adult conversations are in general just sad, bored, and quite ugly individuals.

I'm not sure how you will in the future entertain yourselves if you can't bash someone-not for comments which you disagree with, but the way they look or have their hair.

Those of you with half a brain have the tendency to lose it when you jump on an attack thread.

Everybody I know is dead set against this dufus and his policies. Congress may get the blame but he's supposedly the one in charge. And he can't blame Bush for the last four years anymore.

You can spin it anyway you want. I'm not happy with either party. They don't seem to have a clue about the average working people. The response to the debt is either cut spending or raise taxes and no one ever mentions cutting out all the waste and fraud. Some people will approve giving illegals a path to citizenship but it only makes the problem worse as more will come and this administration refuses to secure our borders and deport anyone except those they deem criminals.

                        Consider this:

You might view the history of the world as being one of individuals imposing their particular views on how to live life on as many others as possible – at the point of a sword. Think Khan, Alexander, Caesar, British
royals, Hitler, Stalin, Hirohito, Mao, et al. Technology advanced, but the goal was the same.

Mid-twentieth century might mark the point where the people of the world got tired of that idea. That notion was replaced by the “group” wanting to impose their particular view on how to live life on as many others as possible. Though some still prefer to use (war) technology, the main form of coercion has become legislation – always compassionate, of course. Think UN, European Union, NATO, Islam/Sharia, NWO. (In the US think progressivism and fundamentalist conservativism).

The change from the individual to the collective does not change the intended outcome: imposing one’s particular beliefs on as many others as possible. Now, whether you deny the legitimacy of these groups or bow down in adoration, the question to ask yourself is this:

Are you “sheepish,” or, do you prefer to be the captain of your own destiny?

"There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters." - Noah Webster/American Lexicographer

SS, Based on your simple minded statement, there are only a handful of Real Americans in Congress at this point. Some Republicans and some Democrats. But you must admit, Democrats in general have not tried to work with Republicans at all in the last 4-years and it started when they foisted Obamacare upon us behind closed doors without even knowing what they were voting for. Hawaii just lost a respected Democrat Senator, Dan Inouye, who did a wonderful job of representing the interests of our state. This fiscal conservative voted for Inouye every time he was up for reelection. However, it's a shame his last 4-years in D.C. were tarnished by complete partisanship. I would not go so far as to say he was not a Real American becuase of that though.

The return on investment for those Billionaires was less than 1%. You people who voted republicon are bought and paid for whores to those Billionaires.

Imagine how the economy would be recovering if our President actually knew what it meant to cut spending and cut taxes. Sadly, most of the GOP leadership isn't much better. It's sad that someone from the middle class can't afford to run and be elected. I only wish that every elected official had to live under the same healthcare plan and pension plan that the rest of us are "forced" to live with.

A very sad state of affairs when all we can do is "cope" with the president of our once great country, don't you think? It is already apparent he does not have the "coping mechanism" to bring us together. His narcissism and his "his way of the highway" attitude will be the ruination of us all.

I can only assume his high approval is made up of many, many folks benefiting from the excessively generous entitlement programs many, many of us are paying for.

My taxes on a low-$30,000s salary (exactly what happened to the 'no one making less than $250,000 will pay higher taxes' promise will be the greatest mystery of the 21st century) just went up almost $100 a month/$1,200 a year, seriously reducing the amount of money I have available for food, electricity, medical bills, transportation, rent etc. I get to learn how to 'cope' on a $25-a-week food budget, and hope that my health doesn't falter or that nothing I own breaks down or that I don't wear out any of the clothes or shoes I have been wearing since 2008 'cause there sure isn't money for new ones.

What? You don't want to contribute to your retirement fund? That is what Social Security is, you know.

Hey Ed,still have a problem with a black man in the White House just like the rest of the Rethuglicans. Time to grow up and realize you arent fit to shine his shoes, not to mention Obama is 100 times smarter than you. What's your job, certainly no where near the POTUS. Luckily the Rethuglican party is on the way out,and you did it to yourselves. You failed to realize in this day and age with the internet you can't keep feeding people BS and keep them in the dark. Sucks to be you. For every step forward the country takes FOREWARD, you take two steps backwards. Then you wonder why your party is a insignificant and a total failure.

It was the red states that voted for Romney. The red states have the highest school drop out rate, the highest level of poverty, the highest level of teen pregnancies, the greatest amount of racism and intolerance and the least understanding of science. Yet, you look at the blue states, where people are well educated, have good jobs, and pay more taxes than the red states, and you call us stupid? We're not the ones whose daughters get pregnant and fourteen, drop out of school and file for welfare. Our daughters go to college and build careers. Our kids understand science and are capable of critical thinking.

You can call us all the names you want, pretend we're the takers. But all of us know where most of the takers really live. We know which states have their hands out for those federal dollars.

The reason you don't believe the polls is because you just don't want to. You prefer to go down to the DewDrop Inn and drink with all your racist buddies and bad mouth the President, who won the majority vote by a substantial margin and didn't leave Romney enough electoral votes to even dry his tears. When you only talk to other people as ignorant as you are, you get a very distorted view of the world.

Of couse the red states voted for Romney, they have a history of being Democrat, and now have seen where that leads. There eyes and brains have been opened and they don't want it anymore. I can't blame them. The Democrat lead states have the biggest debt problems, except for DC that collects more than it's share of the wealth. The polls show the amount of disatisfaction already and is only beginning. The takers don't want to loose thier "Sugardaddy" and that is the reason Obama got reelected, not to mention a good dose of fear, that the campain flooded the air waves with. Why do liberials always bring up Race? It doens't matter what race a person is if they make stupid decisions. The only ones bringing his race into the discussion is liberials, like it will make them feel better. He was running against a Hispanic, but I guess you can be raceist against Hispanics then, except when you need thier votes, then you buy them with citizenship.

I still beleive that the voting polls were tamper with, president and his so call goonies are a bunch of crooks to turn our free country into a social government so he can do what he wants, to be a dicator or king. We have to get this S O B out with Nancy and Reid, Congress should be replaced and that goes for senate too, the money they are screwing the tax payers out of. Congress and Senate are taking free healthcare and retirements (not 1 or 2) check on Nancy and reid' s status and others it's mind blowing. I could go on and on. Let's face it were being screwed..........WHAT MAKES THEM BETTER THEN ALL OF US? Why is the president trying to discontinue a 4 and 8 year term, he wants a no time limit to the presidents office? Check and see if the president is doing alot behind our backs?

For someone that calls him/herself tryreality, you only have to look at facts. See the post above at #9.3, open the link, and get back to us. Damn libs, just can't handle facts. There has been a plethora of "opinion" posts on these threads today from the left and very little fact. Must be the moon.

Such a FOX statement. I seriously suggest, again, that you remove the "fair" from your screen name. You've nothing to post that states you are in agreement with the GOP but certainly like to drum up angst against all others.

I remember years ago when I was as angry as you with my life. My therapist suggested running. It's done nothing but good for me. I'd suggest you do the same. Endorphins are the BOMB!

What a sad story, Not even started his second term and Hope is lost? As for the polls, Democrats poll 100% against Republicans, and half the Republicans rate Republicans hi since they tend to fold on taxes, and spending issues. That would account for the under 25% rating. On the other hand Democrats rate Democrates at 100%, and Republicans are not had hard on them, because sometimes they do the right thing. Of couse the people who voted for Obama will stand up for him, after all few people admit to mistakes that they make.

RandogM Obama just changes his mind, because of news stories, or groups he needed to get reelected. But you are true he doesn't change his mind, one would need a mind to be able to change it.
