Paul Ryan says GOP is mulling short-term debt limit extension

House Republicans are discussing the prospect of a short-term extension in the nation's debt limit to avoid fault and give negotiations between lawmakers and the White House more time to succeed.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and erstwhile GOP vice presidential candidate, told reporters at House Republicans' retreat that members were "discussing the virtue of a short term debt limit extension."

Ryan elaborated that the idea would be to raise the nation’s borrowing authority for a few months and tie the matter into discussions with the White House and Senate on the other fiscal issues facing the country, such as the automatic spending cuts associated with the sequester and how to fund the government in the next fiscal year.

The comment is a significant development because it suggests there is movement in the House GOP Conference to avoid the debt limit when it's scheduled to hit in February, and instead shift the political battle in their favor by transforming the debate into a fight over shutting down the government or offsetting $110 billion dollars in cuts to defense and domestic programs.

When asked by NBC News whether he believed the House GOP Conference was unified enough to not have a repeat of the fiscal cliff fiasco, when many Republican lawmakers were reluctant to support plans by the GOP leadership, Ryan said, “We want people to have clear view of what's coming so there are no surprises, that means setting expectations accordingly so we can move forward in a unified basis.”

Ryan spent the morning with House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., briefing members about the upcoming “triple threat” of fiscal issues to be played out in Washington over the late winter and spring.  GOP aides tell NBC News the talks are part of an effort by the Republican leadership to gauge the mood of the conference as well as map out the best possible path for the party  in the next few months, so far they consider the response from members to be "positive."

The retreat is the House GOP’s annual occasion for members to talk to leadership, relax with their spouses and kids and also learn from communication professionals about to contour their message to fit the electorate. In light of the drubbing the GOP received amongst women and minorities in the 2012 election, the retreat will feature a seminar titled: “Coalitions-Discussion on Successful Communication with Minorities and Women.”

Need long term deal. Allow sequester to go through. Short term deals will just upset the economy and probably get out rating get lowered again.

That may be what the GOP wants to happen. Don't forget their oft stated number one priority. Getting our rating lowered didn't seem to bother them last time they caused it to happen.

The rating was lowered because our President is too incompetent to present a plan with specifics.

The GOP has decided it may be a good idea to pay our bills? Wow. Perhaps reason may prevail after all.

Future spending and the debt limit are two different discussions.

Note the GOP had no problem racking up debt under Bush. The common belief by the GOP base was summarized perfectly by Darth Cheney: "Ronald Reagan proved that deficits don't matter".

"Ronald Reagan proved that deficits don't matter" The truth hurts doesn't it!

I was a Marine during the last govt shutdown. I remember calling my wife from Kuwait one evening. She was frantic, If I didn't get my paycheck we could not pay rent. Can you imagine how helpless I felt- on the other side of the world, serving my country. My young wife, who moved far from home to be with me worried about being evicted.

This is rather simple. Remove the Forcible Rape sentence from the GOP Platform. Indicate a way for the Hispanic to get a green card and not go to jail; and find a way to increase the age of SS to 68 and cut in half the yearly increases. Leave Medicare alone and cut the Defense Department in half, (the Generals and Staff. This is worth 50 Billion a year. there were only 50 Generals after WW2.. Get out of Afghanistan this year and don't leave troops. Cut in half funding for other countries... worth 100 Billion! Done move on to something else. Stop the constant fighting with the President

Well let's see how honest Ryan is this time if he commits to a position after he claimed to run that sub-3 hour marathon in about 4 hours on the record, lied that Obama is cutting seniors' medicare payments by $700 billion, and is he changing his name to Rand from Ryan to follow his economics idol Ayhn yet, that tough survival of the fittest atheist lady who wrote the book he makes his staff read? Oh and that past of his living off the government dole in gov not private jobs most of his life starting at getting full social security survivor benefits when his Dad passed away and their family was pretty well off anyway (probably had a nice insurance policy), maybe he should give a little back to those who really need it. This guy has never had to work a day in his life, he had a little fun at a fast food job they say just to see what they other side was like probably. He is the future of that party, a big lie from here on out with voter suppression on top.

              EO – Pay increase

The EO it requires that Congress pass a budget … something they haven't done in over 3 years.

If you make $16 an hour and you have not had a pay raise in the last 2 years and now if you wait just another 2 months you might get pay raise of 8¢ per hour or for a 40 hour work week you will get an additional $3.20 weekly. If you make $70,000 a year it will be an increase of only $350.00 per year after having no pay increase for over 2 years.

On Thursday (12-27-2012), Obama issued an executive order that would lift the freeze and implement a 0.5% across-the-board increase starting the first pay period after March 27, 2013.
President Obama and Congress agreed in the fall to maintain the freeze that began in January 2011 through the end of the current continuing resolution. Obama recommended a 0.5% pay increase next year for feds when Congress passes a budget. It remains unclear when or if that will happen.

(1/1/2013) - In the fiscal cliff deal the Senate added a last-minute addition to the bill that would prevent a $900 pay raise for members of Congress from taking effect in March.

The debt is 100% the responsibility of the Republicans. They have, for over three decades, intentionally run up the debt as part of their "starve the beast" philosophy. That tactic has completely failed in its objective to reduce the size of government (in fact GW Bush massively increased the size of the federal government, even creating a new cabinet level bureaucracy) however they have succeeded in running up a huge debt.

Below is a right winger ADMITTING that their strategy is to INTENTIONALLY increase the debt.

              Peter17

“The real winner with this legislation is the Tea Party and Grover Norquist. Their mission has NEVER been to protect the top 2% or anyone else. It is to force the end to "Big Government" in Washington DC.

The Tea Party was born because neither Democrats or Republicans were ever in the mood to cut spending and reduce the size of government. By handing out the pork to the folks back home, they kept on getting re-elected. That means the TP needed a different approach, and they found one - "Starve the Beast". If you cannot get Congress to pass legislation to lower spending, prevent them from raising the tax revenue needed to run "Big Government". Therefore they oppose tax increases of any kind on anyone. Less money will eventually mean smaller government.

So what does Obama do?? He makes almost all the Bush tax cuts permanent, cutting federal tax revenue over the next 10 years by $4 trillion. The TP probably cannot believe it because Obama has signed a "death warrant" on big government. Can you imagine anyone voting to raise taxes by trillions of dollars any time soon??? Not likely. The only way to get the country onto some kind of sustainable financial course now will be even more trillions of spending cuts than people were anticipating. Say goodbye to big government over the next 10-20 years. There now is no way to fund even a scaled back big government in Washington DC, thanks to Obama.”

Sorry, but Obama's goal is to collapse the economy, bring the wealthy down to the lazy and irresponsible level (remember redistribution of wealth) It's all about his socialist upbringing.

Obama has no need to negotiate. He got his tax proposal passed and those precious spending cuts Republicans are demanding are coming forward in the Budget Control Act sequesters. Just let them take effect. VOILA! Task accomplished. Even if congress passes out some wild-eyed legislation, it doesn't have the necessary votes to override a presidential veto. We will not default for Obama has the constitutional authority, pledged upon his oath, to meet the monetary obligations of the United States. And when put to the acid test before the Nine Wise Men and Women at SCOTUS, he will prevail on the matter. There have been greater challenges between a president and congress, and in virtually every instance the president has won the skirmish. Go for it.

Your right. Problem is to stop the increases every year with the Entitlements. Increase the age of SS to 68 and then to 69. Stop the War in Afghanistan this year. Stop the funding of other Countries now!

God here we go again,, greedy selfish politician who all work together so they can screw the American people out of more taxes. Forget fixing the problem of over spending greedy government. Why fix that when they are ALL getting rich. This is the house the servants have destroyed from within, and now the servants own the house because they are killing all the home owners and making slaves out of them. Lets put a ban on this criminal governments spending, put them on unemployment, stop paying for their 1-2 million dollar days on the golf coarse,, But NO..raise the debt ceiling so they can again double the debt with their greedy ass spending and Arming our enemies for wars. Raise the limit so they can Arm Egypt and others with war planes and tanks,, What is the true deceptions here people,, Silent idiot puppets who get screwed by a black man and scream,, harder boy, harder, push harder boy

Hmmmm, who is it that has spent more money than ANY other president over the past four years, wasn't G.W Bush, it is drum roll.....................OBAMA. So the next time you DEMS want to place blame look in the mirror. Dems have spent, spent, spent, spent, spent, and what do we have to show for it? You all that voted for change I hope you are happy with it, because it is YOUR children and great grand children and mine to that will be paying for it.

I know everything in the world that is wrong is Bush's fault, even though he has been out of office over 4 years now. MAN UP!
