Paul Ryan says GOP is mulling short-term debt limit extension

House Republicans are discussing the prospect of a short-term extension in the nation's debt limit to avoid fault and give negotiations between lawmakers and the White House more time to succeed.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and erstwhile GOP vice presidential candidate, told reporters at House Republicans' retreat that members were "discussing the virtue of a short term debt limit extension."

Ryan elaborated that the idea would be to raise the nation’s borrowing authority for a few months and tie the matter into discussions with the White House and Senate on the other fiscal issues facing the country, such as the automatic spending cuts associated with the sequester and how to fund the government in the next fiscal year.

The comment is a significant development because it suggests there is movement in the House GOP Conference to avoid the debt limit when it's scheduled to hit in February, and instead shift the political battle in their favor by transforming the debate into a fight over shutting down the government or offsetting $110 billion dollars in cuts to defense and domestic programs.

When asked by NBC News whether he believed the House GOP Conference was unified enough to not have a repeat of the fiscal cliff fiasco, when many Republican lawmakers were reluctant to support plans by the GOP leadership, Ryan said, “We want people to have clear view of what's coming so there are no surprises, that means setting expectations accordingly so we can move forward in a unified basis.”

Ryan spent the morning with House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., briefing members about the upcoming “triple threat” of fiscal issues to be played out in Washington over the late winter and spring.  GOP aides tell NBC News the talks are part of an effort by the Republican leadership to gauge the mood of the conference as well as map out the best possible path for the party  in the next few months, so far they consider the response from members to be "positive."

The retreat is the House GOP’s annual occasion for members to talk to leadership, relax with their spouses and kids and also learn from communication professionals about to contour their message to fit the electorate. In light of the drubbing the GOP received amongst women and minorities in the 2012 election, the retreat will feature a seminar titled: “Coalitions-Discussion on Successful Communication with Minorities and Women.”

Now let's take a look at how bad President Obama has been for business in America.

"Business executives like to portray the Obama administration as the “ most anti-business” in history, creating an “ increasingly hostile environment for investment and job creation.” However, the data tells a far different story. According to a Bloomberg News analysis, corporate profits have grown by 171 percent under Obama,
the most in the post-war era:
U.S. corporations’ after-tax profits have grown by 171 percent under Obama, more than
under any president since World War II
, and are now at their highest level relative to the size of the economy since the government began keeping records in 1947, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

"Profits are more than twice as high as their peak during President Ronald Reagan’s administration and more than 50 percent greater than during the late-1990s Internet boom, measured by the size of the economy. Average annual corporate profit growth under Obama is the highest since 1900, whereas profit growth declined during both Bush presidencies. As a share of the economy, corporate profits have never been higher."

"Unfortunately, this profit deluge has not been shared by workers, whose wages as a percentage of the economy have fallen to all-time lows. Workers also got dinged by the recent increase in the payroll tax, which was large enough to wipe out a minimum wage increase in some states."

Welcome to the United Corporate Plutocracy of America. And yet all you hear from corporations is the business climate is terrible.

Bulletman, Herron,

The DOW has doubled because the Federal Reserve has pumped 6 trillion dollars into the market over the last several years and they are still pumping in 45 billion more every month for god knows how long. They are going to have to pull that money out soon to pay down some of this countries debts, hope you two don't get in caught.

The DOW is worthless............stocks and bonds are nothing more than IOUs. The current debt of 16.4 trillion that the media touts is 106% of GDP and our real debt is 114 trillion.

Do yourself a favor, do some digging of your own and stop believing the pump and dump media moguls.

Drop in "new" unemployment claims = nobody left to layoff.

Increase in housing starts = restoration of housing destroyed in disasters.....Sandy ring a bell.

Unemployment was 7.7% in November, rose to 7.8% in December.........yes, the numbers were skewed due to Sandy.

      #336.7 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:11 PM EST

      Funny,

When the networks, news websites, etc. say something is wrong with the economy, you tea-baggers swear it is gospel...by the way, Sandy housing starts have not started....remember the GOP blocked the emergency funding?

"Nobody left to layoff?" No one is working anywhere?

But, the minute the news is good....you fall on the floor and your ass falls off.

        #336.9 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:29 PM EST

        No,dam,

Housing starts means "housing starts", not applicants. Go back to your coloring book and stop making up your own "facts".

Tell us more about "nobody left to layoff" Unemployment is now over 100% according to you

          #336.10 - Thu Jan 17, 2013 11:39 PM EST

Corporations are making record profits, but the wages aren't going to the workers...they're retained at the top

The percentage of Americans working is at 30 year low; our wages are at an all-time low

Why? DEBT. Our debt-to-GDP ratio is at 350%. When you take out borrowed money, our GDP is actually negative.

Our "growth" IS a mirage. Anyone can spend when they have a credit card; at some point, you have to pay the bills down.

The debt hurts all of us; we have to get it under control

Here's a better and more permanent fix...........get the 6 trillion dollars that the feds have pumped into the stock market out.............use that 6 trillion dollars to pay down the debt! Then take 1.4 trillion of the 2.4 trillion the federal government pulls in every year and pay the debt down over the next 5-7 years. At that point, the government would have plenty of money left over to properly maintain this country.

Now let's take a look at corporate taxes in relation to GDP. In America corporate tax revenues as a share of G.D.P. are the lowest among all major countries. But our poor corporations are just taxed to death.

"Checkered Demon" these are facts that Faux Lying News would never post. The first longer text is from an article that appeared in Blomberg Business News. The second point on the GDP can be found in almost any article that correctly points out that our overall taxes are the lowest we have had since 1950. I can't post the links because MSN will not let me. But maybe titles will help and you can google them.

Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, all of us... we know how the majority of you, especially those of you on your extreme right (which seems to more and more of you, lately) feel about us. We know your history, and ours. And we're not stupid! Get it? We know that you have little, if any, respect or use for us, racially, culturally, economically, academically, intellectually, or legally. Many of you simply hate us, for who and what we are, and we know it. The very idea or our "taking up space" IN YOUR COUNTRY is anathema to you, and we know that to! Rightly or wrongly, this is what you've given us to believe, because of how you behave toward us-it's just that simple! But your delusions, about race and ethnicity, delusions that have you believing all you have to do is concoct some BS message that will cause us to accept your twisted and bigoted views of us, as being somehow rational; that you can be this deluded, this arrogant, this ignorant, this hypocritical, this wrong, is simply beyond the pale.

                                        f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

                                        g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

                                        h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?

                                        i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

                                        j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Thanks for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

... you have an absolute right to your own opinion RL, but not your own facts. You see, the fact is that you know absolutely nothing about me, nothing from which to draw the conclusions you have drawn. Whether I work or not, whether I'm sitting on "my couch", or not, as I write this-nothing. You've drawn you opinions of me out of thin air, and that's precisely my point. By and large, your party knows absolutely nothing about what this country as become, and what it will be, shortly. But they have the audacity to presuppose that the magic can be found in "new messaging". Give me a break, we Mitt's 47% are not stupid. And the last election proves it. By the way RL, I am a 67 year-old, black American veteran, who wore this country's uniform, proudly, between 1962 and 1967. I retired from a career in the aerospace and defense industry, in upper-management, I might add, after well-over 30 years with the same company. I am now a real estate investor. I don't do welfare, RL! I've worked since I was 12 years old. You see, RL, prejudice is the root of if all, from racism to genocide, the type of prejudice your comments underscore. Once again, you have an absolute right to your opinions (and your prejudices) but not your facts. And the fact of American history, on these matters, and your party's part in them, is plain for all to see... "truth to power", RL... and, I know that, sometimes, the truth can be hard to take.

... oh, about the "kick my butt" part, you might want to think about what I'll be doing, while you're trying kicking my butt. In Texas, we refer to people like you, "male bitches, who throw BS around like baseballs", as being "...all hat and no cattle". I've been around for a lot of years, and I've seen a lot of cowards, like you, guys who talk a good game, those who talk about kicking butt, before they've laid eyes on the butts they say they'll kick. And, almost to the last of them, they turn out to be the "biggest pussies" at the party. If I had to bet, RL you're just like the rest them, all mouth and nothing more.

Reposting because I am very curious to see what either conservatives or liberals think about the savings and my admitted opinion/analysis as to why this particular study is literally being ignored by Congress and the mainstream media. My apology for the size of the comment.

One trillion in savings a year (not spread over 10 years) was found over a year ago by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) and the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) two groups with widely divergent views on tax and spending policy. They in turn presented their findings to BOTH the Super Committee and Congress. The report was ignored. Their concise 18 page report identified the following IMMEDIATE spending cuts:
                                                                        • $214.9 billion in savings from eliminating wasteful subsidies to agribusiness and other corporations.
                                                                        • $428.8 billion in savings from ending low-priority or unnecessary military programs
                                                                        • $232.3 billion in savings from improvements to program execution and government operations.
                                                                        • $132.1 in savings from reforms to major entitlement programs

Ever heard of it? Probably not. I contacted every member of Congress in my state, have not heard a word back. So the first question we should be asking is why is Congress ignoring this? Followed by why is this not splashed all over the media? My opinion? Because the spending cuts would offend the Corporate/Wall Street/Special Interests that currently own and run America. And because our media much like Congress is owned by corporations. To be exact, approximately 90% of all media content in America is controlled by six corporations.

Now combine the above with raising some taxes and guess what? Deficit problem/revenue problem could probably be solved.

                                                                        • 1 vote

Romney and Lyin Ryan couldn't even carry Ryans home district in Wi. Have to wonder How Lyin Ryan can be so against SSI he sure thought it was a good thing when His father died and his mother got his SSI to help raise little Pauly.

You wanna lower our debt, cut defense spending, end corporate welfare, look everywhere in Gov't agencies to cut the fat. The Patriot act probably added all kinds of wasteful spending out of paranoia.

When, I believe it was Nixon, who took us off the the gold standard this country started to go to hell in a hand basket.
