Paul Ryan says GOP is mulling short-term debt limit extension

House Republicans are discussing the prospect of a short-term extension in the nation's debt limit to avoid fault and give negotiations between lawmakers and the White House more time to succeed.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and erstwhile GOP vice presidential candidate, told reporters at House Republicans' retreat that members were "discussing the virtue of a short term debt limit extension."

Ryan elaborated that the idea would be to raise the nation’s borrowing authority for a few months and tie the matter into discussions with the White House and Senate on the other fiscal issues facing the country, such as the automatic spending cuts associated with the sequester and how to fund the government in the next fiscal year.

The comment is a significant development because it suggests there is movement in the House GOP Conference to avoid the debt limit when it's scheduled to hit in February, and instead shift the political battle in their favor by transforming the debate into a fight over shutting down the government or offsetting $110 billion dollars in cuts to defense and domestic programs.

When asked by NBC News whether he believed the House GOP Conference was unified enough to not have a repeat of the fiscal cliff fiasco, when many Republican lawmakers were reluctant to support plans by the GOP leadership, Ryan said, “We want people to have clear view of what's coming so there are no surprises, that means setting expectations accordingly so we can move forward in a unified basis.”

Ryan spent the morning with House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., briefing members about the upcoming “triple threat” of fiscal issues to be played out in Washington over the late winter and spring.  GOP aides tell NBC News the talks are part of an effort by the Republican leadership to gauge the mood of the conference as well as map out the best possible path for the party  in the next few months, so far they consider the response from members to be "positive."

The retreat is the House GOP’s annual occasion for members to talk to leadership, relax with their spouses and kids and also learn from communication professionals about to contour their message to fit the electorate. In light of the drubbing the GOP received amongst women and minorities in the 2012 election, the retreat will feature a seminar titled: “Coalitions-Discussion on Successful Communication with Minorities and Women.”

The Republicans are going uphill in trying to save this country. Obama and the Democrats are trying to break it and could give a crap less if the whole country goes bankrupt. This was evident in the fiscal cliff negotiations and even more evident every time Obama opens his mouth its about spending millions more like there is no tomorrow. The sorry Obamabots are are huddled around his feet waiting for the next hand out like beggar dogs. If the Republicans had any sense they would just let the whole damn thing collapse and then try to rebuild the country. At least Obama's legacy would then stink as it should.

The republicans are burning holes in the bottom of their boat. And wondering why they are getting wet.

You go girl. You Repubs still have a chance to keep the business and financial world guessing so that you can nip this economic recovery thing in the bud. Plenty of time to try and tarnish that black guy's image at the expense of the rest of the country. Hey, at the expense of the entire world's economies.

Unfortunately that appears to be all we can do any longer - just kick a problem down the road a little longer and say we'll deal with this problem tomorrow. Congress can't deal with the debt ceiling - they can't even pass budgets any longer. How long has it been? I think it's been three years now since a real budget was passed. Since then it's been nothing but spending continuation measures.

What kind of example are we setting for the next generations? An extremely bad one.

Credit and debt. It is how the game has been played since Alexander Hamilton was secretary of the treasury and created the fed. It is how the game is played throughout the world by the big boys, even the commies. I guess the Republicans don't want to play with the big boys anymore. Sorry Repubtards, like it or not,Hamilton was one of the founders. I'm sure he would chuckle at you simpletons. Maybe not, he was serious about his country's well being.

Do not worry people. After the country goes completely broke we will not have any entitlements. We will have a country in economic shambles and only those with guns will be able to get something to eat. This means the Liberals will pretty much starve to death without government assistance. Call it Karma coming home to roost.

@Larry, man you pukebags are really low informed or else just plain stupid. You think libs don't have any guns, and don't know how to use them. Hey, keep thinking that way slick. More libs have served in the military than the pukebags have. Look at all the draft dodgers the pukebag party has.

So yes Larry, please keep believing that and telling your low informed friends that lie. Because when the manure hits the fan is when you might, if you have time, realize how freaking stupid you really are. Same with the minority people, they also know how to use guns. Gangs shooting other gangs, the drug trade guys blowing people away. And those people aren't pukebags. Scum, yes they are, but they sure aren't on the pukebag or the lib side.

But go ahead, think what you want, time will tell.

One trillion in savings a year (not spread over 10 years) was found over a year ago by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) and the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) two groups with widely divergent views on tax and spending policy. They in turn presented their findings to BOTH the Super Committee and Congress. The report was ignored. Their concise 18 page report identified the following IMMEDIATE spending cuts:
                      • $214.9 billion in savings from eliminating wasteful subsidies to agribusiness and other corporations.
                      • $428.8 billion in savings from ending low-priority or unnecessary military programs
                      • $232.3 billion in savings from improvements to program execution and government operations.
                      • $132.1 in savings from reforms to major entitlement programs

Ever heard of it? Probably not. I contacted every member of Congress in my state, have not heard a word back. So the first question we should be asking is why is Congress ignoring this? Followed by why is this not splashed all over the media? My opinion? Because the spending cuts would offend the Corporate/Wall Street/Special Interests that currently own and run America. And because our media much like Congress is owned by corporations. To be exact, approximately 90% of all media content in America is controlled by six corporations.

Now combine the above with raising some taxes and guess what? Deficit problem/revenue problem could probably be solved.

If you don't have the money in the bank to make the credit card payment when it arrives, don't make the purchase, its called balance budgeting, hmm, what a novel concept.

Now if you were to ask me if I miss a Congress that was willing to compromise, a Congress that did not have one party (Republicans) who have done everything they can since 2006 to regain power and since 2008 to discredit our current president, a Congress that puts AMERICA over the Corporate/Wall Street/Special Interest money that currently controls it. Then I would have said yes.

Here are the main highlights revealed by the USAF. Keep in mind that all
the data below relate to United States Air Force aircraft used by one woman
                                    over a sixteen month period.

Several of these flights included Ms. Pelosi's guests, such as grown

On one junket to Baghdad, according to the Air Force report, she had the

aircraft bar stocked with Johnny Walker Red Scotch, Grey Goose Vodka, E&J
Brandy, Bailey's Irish Cream, Maker's Mark Whiskey, Courvoisier Cognac,

was obviously a very important "gubment bidness" trip.

Evidence generally speaks for itself, and in Ms. Pelosi's case it speaks
the language of abuse and (evidently) a serious familial drinking problem,
for in a single year she and her spawn drank an amount in excess of the net
income of the average employed American! When she said, "... If the
stimulus doesn't pass, five hundred million people might lose their jobs...", I
thought she was unintentionally revealing her ignorance. I'm now more
inclined to think she was pickled.

Even though she can no longer abuse the USAF, she can either fly
                                    on her
broom, or fly Southwest Airlines, where bagsfly free.

I am curious, what does the Democrats have against a balanced budget? Thats what this country needs, but it seems that Obuma and his demo's don't want the country solvent, but to be in debt, and the answer to them is to just request more credit, not curb spending and get us in the black. Hell, Democrats favorite color is red.

I am curious. What do the Republicans have against a balanced budget and not running deficits? Especially considering the fact that the massive deficits we have today were and are a direct result of Conservative/Republican economic policies of Supply Side and NeoLiberal economics. And especially considering another fact and that is over the last 33 years we have had Democratic presidents for 13 of those years and Republican presidents for 20 of those years and then a Republican controlled Congress from 1994 until 2006. And the ran up massive deficits while in control, then suddenly became "fiscal conservatives" when they lost control. And of course keep claiming all those deficits are from the "tax and spend" Democratic party. Seeing a pattern here?

One other point to ponder here. "The Republicans won control of both houses in the 1946 elections, only to lose them in 1948; with Dwight D. Eisenhower's election to the presidency in 1952, the Republicans again won both houses. However, after the Democratic Party again won back control in the elections of 1954, it was the majority party in both houses of Congress for most of the next 40 years; the Republicans were only able to win control of the Senate for a six-year period (1981-87). The Republicans won a majority position in both houses of Congress in the elections of 1994."

Now look at history and see when America flourished.

When Clinton handed the reigns over to Bush there was plenty of money in the til not to mention the billions in SS and Medicare but Bush decided to start a war on lies and used all the surplus and stole the money from those two funds. Now the repubs have the nerve to blame the seniors for the deficit, they say that while they push their pet projects and pork through. They allow their rich fat cat friends and big business to keep money off shore by pushing loopholes and tax breaks through to make it legal they pay less taxes than the average American. They will not take away the tax breaks and subsidies to the big oil companies that have made billions year after year on the backs of people just trying to get by. And just now they wanted to keep the tax breaks for the rich on the books for ten years while we would get one year. They took the $250.000 -$399.000 wage earners and lumped them into the $50.000 wage earners as middle class and anyone over $400,000 is the rich in the last fiasco over avoiding the cliff. They will continue to blame everyone except themselves for the problems that we are facing today. Their answer to getting back on track is to cut every area that affects the middle class but keeps their rich friends without any cuts. They are continuing to lose at every level because common sense people are seeing through their lies and rhetoric even though they still have the redneck racist votes no matter how they get screwed they will cut their own throats to vote all white. Can't wait til 2016 when they will again open their big mouths to alienate more of the masses and lose big time.

in 1994, Reagan sent a letter to congress requesting an assault weapons ban. As CA Gov, Reagan signed a ban on weapons that were open carried from being loaded.

"Bulletman" it is also a fact that until the mid 1980's the NRA was strong proponent of gun control and their main focus was on gun safety and training. Again, facts.
