House Republicans are discussing the prospect of a short-term extension in the nation's debt limit to avoid fault and give negotiations between lawmakers and the White House more time to succeed.
Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and erstwhile GOP vice presidential candidate, told reporters at House Republicans' retreat that members were "discussing the virtue of a short term debt limit extension."
Ryan elaborated that the idea would be to raise the nation’s borrowing authority for a few months and tie the matter into discussions with the White House and Senate on the other fiscal issues facing the country, such as the automatic spending cuts associated with the sequester and how to fund the government in the next fiscal year.
The comment is a significant development because it suggests there is movement in the House GOP Conference to avoid the debt limit when it's scheduled to hit in February, and instead shift the political battle in their favor by transforming the debate into a fight over shutting down the government or offsetting $110 billion dollars in cuts to defense and domestic programs.
When asked by NBC News whether he believed the House GOP Conference was unified enough to not have a repeat of the fiscal cliff fiasco, when many Republican lawmakers were reluctant to support plans by the GOP leadership, Ryan said, “We want people to have clear view of what's coming so there are no surprises, that means setting expectations accordingly so we can move forward in a unified basis.”
Ryan spent the morning with House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., briefing members about the upcoming “triple threat” of fiscal issues to be played out in Washington over the late winter and spring. GOP aides tell NBC News the talks are part of an effort by the Republican leadership to gauge the mood of the conference as well as map out the best possible path for the party in the next few months, so far they consider the response from members to be "positive."
The retreat is the House GOP’s annual occasion for members to talk to leadership, relax with their spouses and kids and also learn from communication professionals about to contour their message to fit the electorate. In light of the drubbing the GOP received amongst women and minorities in the 2012 election, the retreat will feature a seminar titled: “Coalitions-Discussion on Successful Communication with Minorities and Women.”

We are NOT borrowing money! Borrowing implies repayment, and we all know that ain't gonna happen.
But 40 cents of every tax dollar does go to paying interest on our debt so we are paying just not paying it down?

Patting ourselves on the back for making the interest payment, is pathetic, at best.
Not only do we not pay back the loans, we ask for more money, thus making the loans larger. (notice I left out the word, "borrow.")
At this point the Republicans best move is to raise the debt ceiling without looking for anything in return,; Then stop trying to demonize the President and simply offer to work with him to find ways to bring down the debt. The President wants to do this as much as anyone else does. Take a leap of faith! I think everyone wants the country to come out of this a stronger nation. I, also think that would be there best way to try to gain votes in future elections to. What ever is done to bring down the debt will become public record, and the whole country will know who did what and who did not anyway; there is no need for all this drama and wasting time!

Another example would be to compare Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama. One looks like a beautiful model and the other looks like road kill.

Spending is authorized by CONGRESS. The President does NOT spend.

run it over the cliff... deal or no deal, today, right now. more time you give them simply means more time for them to figure out how to include their pork in the next deal...... if you ever think the repubs are serious about helping the country think again, they only care about their own pocketbook... senate / congress seat is moneymaking business and if you think they would let the opportunity pass without them getting paid for their time there, you are sorely mistaken.

Having a debt limit is nonsense. Congress alone decides how much money the government will spend, and Congress alone decides how much revenue will be raised through taxes. The difference must be borrowed.
There are three ways to reduce debt: 1) cut spending, 2) increase taxes, or 3) some combination of the two. Since 40 cents of every Federal dollar spent are borrowed, the deficit cannot be eliminated through spending cuts alone.
Every spending program has its constituency--those for Social Security, Medicare and Defense (which collectively account for 80 percent of Federal spending) are mostly Republican voters. No wonder Republicans in Congress want to cut spending, but they refuse to specify which programs to cut. They just know they're against raising taxes to pay for the programs that benefit their constituents. So they demand that the President and Democrats propose programs to be cut, so that the blame for any possible cuts may be shifted to them.
It's mostly Republicans that are in favor of Social Security and Medicare? What are the Democrats in favor of?
16.4 trillion and climbing rapidly. There is absolutely no intent to decrease spending or reduce the annual debt or our national deficit by this administration. More are on the federal taxpayers nickel, than pay federal income taxes. Those collecting are growing at an unsustainable rate. Constitutionally limited government is today a myth. Our Founders knew that once the populuce voted themselves money from the national Kitty, our Republic would be doomed. Barack Saul Alinsky Obama and his merry band of so called "Progressives," could care less.
Stop making the connection between what congress already spent, (debt ceiling) and what spending they can curtail in the future, there is no relation.

herron you have no idea just how informed i am. i will say that i hunt every year and shoot at a gun range every weekend, I do not lie, i am not a gun nut, a gun has been a way of life for me where i live, it is a defense mechanism in the wilderness, your communist president states he supports the right to keep and bare arms publicly, look at chicago, he completly banned hand guns the crime rate went through the roof, where i live crime is very low because the few who have attempted to rob or steal have been shot dead by the homeowner and believe me guns deter crime, i am witness to that fact, our constitution should stand on its own, do not touch it is my opinion, I no more like what happend at sandy hook than you do.
