Obama's first four years in office – then vs. now

Is the nation better off than it was four years ago?

The answer largely depends on the statistics you pick.

With President Barack Obama beginning his second term, there are plenty of numbers suggesting that the country is on more solid footing than it was when he first took office on Jan. 20, 2009.

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro take a look back at President Obama's promises kept and promises broken in his first term.

The Dow Jones Industrial average is up 5,550 points since then. The economy is growing (instead of contracting). Consumer confidence has nearly doubled (though it remains below where it was before the Great Recession). And a larger percentage of Americans believe the country is headed in the right direction (but a majority still think it’s on the wrong track).

On the other hand, there’s data indicating that the nation isn’t better off than it was four years ago – and that the Great Recession continues to take a toll on families. Median household income (adjusted for inflation) is lower than it was in 2009. And more Americans live below the poverty level than they did four years ago.

And some numbers are exactly the same. The current unemployment rate is at 7.8%, which is where it was in Jan. 2009 (though it’s down from a high of 10% in Oct. 2009). And right now, there are roughly 49 million Americans without health insurance, which is identical to where it was in 2009. (The health-insurance mandate under the health-care law doesn’t kick in until 2014.)

Here are other figures over the last four years:

-- The number of U.S. troops in Iraq has dwindled from nearly 140,000 to just 200, while the presence in Afghanistan has increased from 34,000 to 66,000.

-- The federal public debt has increased from $10.6 trillion in Jan. 2009 to $16.4 trillion now.

-- The number of Democrats serving in the U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and in governorships across the country has declined.

Below is a look at Obama’s presidency – so far – by the numbers. The “then” figure is the best-available figure for when Obama was taking office in 2009. And the “now” is the most recent figure. First Read, in 2009, ran a statistical then-vs.-now comparison of George W. Bush’s presidency.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 22.7 million jobs were added between January 1993 and January 2001. (See total nonfarm, seasonally adjusted — the standard measure of jobs.) BLS data show there was a net increase of nearly 1.1 million jobs from January 2001 to January 2009

BLS data for total nonfarm seasonally adjusted jobs show the U.S. had 130,346,000 jobs as of December 2010, up from 129,319,000 in December 2009. That’s 1,027,000 new jobs — slightly less than the 1,095,000 jobs created in Bush’s eight years, from January 2001 to January 2009. The U.S. added more than 1.8 million jobs in 2011. FactCheck.org

There is one major problem with the unemployment reporting. It is reported quarter to quarter. My wife has been unemployed for 3 years. We went from a two income household to a one income. My question is how many families have exhausted unemployment benefits and one or both have not found adequate employment. If the 7.5% reported unemployment is actually 10% higher due to unemployment benefits being exhausted. It would rather be more around the 10% mark. If we look at the more desolate employment market where the jobs have gone abroad there is a higher job loss. All in all we are really looking at least around 10% to 15% unemployment. Lets get real here, Obama promised shovel ready gobs. It never happened. No it is not his fault, however if congress would have passed laws keeping companies here and not allowing them to go to Mexico, China, Guatemala, Taiwan so they could pay workers less and still ship their good here. For goodness sake Hershy's moved to Mexico getting rid of 15,000 American jobs. That was 1 (one) company. There have been hundreds. You can believe the employment reporting or not but just remember it does not include people who have lost their job exausted unemployment and have not found new work.

      But REMEMBER..

Walmart is going to hire 100,000 vets over the next four years.

The Obamas are giddy about this.

Does this bring you hope and change?

If products manufactured in low cost regions were taxed as imports (like other countries do) it would incent companies to keep the jobs at home. Mexico knows Chinese products are a huge problem and can assess a 500% penalty on products from China.

Why can't our leadership think of that?

Obama has been a huge improvement from Bush. He reversed the stem cell research ban, fixed our roads and bridges, switched the war focus from Iraq to Afganistan and Pakistan, Killed Bin Laden, ended dont ask dont tell in the military. However, our labor market is horrible. The white collar jobs are overpayed, the blue collar jobs are dissapearing, and the polo shirt retail jobs are hardly worth having. Nearly 1 in 6 Americans are on food stamps. Govt benefits are supposed to be a short term safety net, but are being used as a long term solution The country will not survive with this format

Charles- though I can't disagree about the 'rant' that was made, I do not think that you can make a blanket statement against the Republican party. If that were the case, we simply also add in all of the Democratic leaning posters on here that think there is some sort of conspiracy against everyone who is not white, rich and old and that the POTUS is a God among men.

Neither party as a whole nor the President are concerned much with anyone but themselves, and none of them are 'like' any of the rest of us.

Numbers dont go your way then you try to discredit it with wat? I mean it must be accurate assuming that majority for the second time voted him. This time winning 5 out 6 swing states and large markets accross the nation. Are you looking at Karl Rove's notes?

                                #96.1 - Mon Jan 21, 2013 4:11 AM EST

A very slim majority, Charles. It would have taken less than 2% to swing to the right. A win is a win, yes. But please don't make it sound impressive by a simple use of the word majority.

And that is part of the problem. The numbers don't necessarily change an awful lot, but the rift between the two sides continues to grow.

Liberal economist Paul Krugman is disappointed with Obama. Says he has not spent enough! He says we are in a lesser depression, and unemployment is actually 16%. Maybe I could agree with the guy spending more for infrastructure to provide jobs for some concrete spending cuts in the future.

Interest rates this low have ruined the extra income I used to get and the stock market does not work well for me. Now I hear that he is willing to further decimate social security cost of living increases to make a deal with republicans on the debt ceiling. Republicans pretend that he is this socialist radical but that could not be further from the truth. He is willing to sacrifice the well being of older americans to fund useless money wasting programs like the atrocity called obamacare. If you are an older middle class american, you will be better off dead then living with the horror of what I call the obomb.

How could Obama or anyone in this administration and the cabinet fix anything? They have never had a real job, never made payroll, they have not a clue what its like to run a business and yet, 51% of the Am people voted for people to fix the US who don't know how. The US has just proven that the majority are brainless, uneducated, believers in imaginary god and socialist utopia to fix this country's problems, and ergo, we are doomed.

What did anyone expect would happen to this country after paying dumb, uneducated, poor women to breed and be rewarded by welfare checks for the past 50 years. Did anyone really, really think that such a massive infusion of ignorant, Low IQ people who vote would know enough, or have enough brains to vote for the right people?

This is what happens when a nation engages in paid Dysgenics (paying dumb people to breed) and not Eugenics (rewarding intelligent people by lower taxes and less regulations) to have children, or just keep the money they have to raise intelligent children.

Go ahead, call me a racist. I could give a flying flip, you dummies and delusional socialist utopian twits have destroyed my country and it is not going to get better.

And take a note: Scientists are working night and day to find a planet to live on, and get there, and they are NOT going to take any idiotic Christians or neoreligious socialist utopian twits with them. Bye bye.

GOOD POINT, and what is very scary, those in his administration are advising Obama on what to do and say, and the team of legal advisors look to see what he can get away with, and what is worth trying and evaluating what we the people will buy into, or what would pass the legal test if the courts get involved. This is what we have been reduced to as our Leadership in this country.

Most voters do not care, and never bother to understand the man, his past, and what he believes in opposite from what he says in the media. May God help us until 2016!

i am a business man and can tell you that the government sure as heck is not helping business. we are being targeted, prayed upon and blocked and hindered at every corner. but no one cares. most businesses know what i am saying. these guys would not know how to create a job if it hit them in the ass. there are less and less jobs in our country. less and less tax revenue. eventualy they will run out of people to milk and out of money. then the game will be over and they will reap what they sewed.

I have heard what you are saying from many a business owner, and some talk shows have the topic, and business owners tell of the nightmares, especially with OBAMA as President! He speaks with fork tongue. So many examples not just one or two rare situations, it is rampant. Obama said he would work with businesses to make sure the Obama Plan works the best, and saves the most money, the same time he said, the average family will save $2500 a year in medical costs. He lied, rates have been going up for employers, and emloyees ever since his socialistic program was approved by congress. He is ridiculous, and non leader. My hope is that Presidents from 2016 can fix the damage, sorry we have to wait so long.

Hopefully my company, thee world-class leader of a particular computer component realizes that the economy is soaring once again so we can return to full capicity manufacturing. I tend to believe in another old saying, "Liars figure, and figures lie". In this case, although the figures may be correct; certianly can be seen that the time period used minimizes the damage did by the current President. Confidence greatly diminished on the day he was elected.
