If the White House gun violence policy announced today had been in effect, would it have changed the outcome of recent mass shootings?
It's impossible to say for certain, but here's a look at what it might have meant.
NEWTOWN -- A tough assault weapons ban might have blocked the sale of the Bushmaster XM-15 that Adam Lanza's mother bought legally and which police say he used to kill all his victims in the school. A ban on high-capacity magazines might also have reduced the killing power of the weapons he brought to the school.

President Barack Obama signs executive orders on gun violence during an event at the White House in Washington, January 16, 2013.
AURORA -- As with Newtown, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines might have reduced the killing power that James Holmes brought into the movie theater.
TUCSON -- Federal law bars gun sales to anyone who "is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance." When Jared Loughner attempted to enlist in the Army, he admitted he was a drug user. That information was never reported to the FBI for inclusion in the background check database, because a Justice Department policy dating from the Clinton administration directed federal agencies not to report information volunteered by drug users, for fear that it would deter drug users from seeking treatment.
We are waiting to hear from the administration on whether President Obama's executive actions announced today will rescind that Clinton-era policy.
VIRGINIA TECH -- The dealers who sold Seung Hui Cho the guns he used in the Virginia Tech shooting followed the law to the letter, because there was no information in the system indicating that he was not qualified to buy a firearm. Federal law bans gun sales to anyone found by a court to be a danger to himself or others because of mental illness, but under the law then in effect in Virginia, the state entered people like Cho into the gun check computers only if they'd actually been admitted as patients to a hospital. Virginia has since eliminated that loophole to bring its practices in line with federal law.
As for requiring universal background checks, two examples come to mind:
COLUMBINE -- Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were both under age 18, the minimum age under federal law to buy a rifle or shotgun from a licensed gun dealer. They recruited an 18-year-old Columbine High School senior to help them buy several guns used in the killings. The three went to a gun show in Adams County, Colorado and bought a semiautomatic assault rifle and two shotguns with cash. Klebold and Harris also bought an assault pistol from a private seller who had bought it at the gun show. These were the four weapons used in the Columbine attack.
L.A. JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER -- In 1999, Buford Furrow, a white supremacist, shot and killed a letter carrier then entered the LA Jewish Community center and shot five other people, including three children. He bought the gun, without a background check, at a gun show in Washington state. As a convicted felon, he could not have passed a federal background check.

Pete Williams - As any REAL and HONEST journalist would do, report the other side of the story too. Now do a report on how many would be shooters/criminals have been stopped before or during the act thanks to legal gun owners that took it upon themselves to engage the criminal and stop or interrupt a crime or death. The media never reports those stories....and yes...there are many stories of shooters and criminials being stopped by civilian gun owners.
Next time I am in New York and about to get mugged at gun point, I will simply show a copy of Obama's gun law mandates to the criminal. Surely the criminal will realize the err of his ways and keep from robbing me....
In my opinion the second amendment was designed to provide for an armed militia and to give the citizens who made up this militia - in order to fight against the British soldiers - the right to arm themselves.
The second amendment says "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."
However, we now have a well regulated militia or military (police, sheriff, navy, marines, coast guard, etc) and we don't need or require the citizens to be armed.
I, for one, am thankful that your opinion means nothing beyond the confines of an internet blog.
Surfer girl - These additional gun laws and mandates are Infringing on that right to keep and bear arms. Most liberals have little experience with guns and don't realize the safety and protection they bring to our society. We have 300 Million guns in America and only 9000 gun related homicides...most done by criminals who careless about gun laws anyway. In contrast, countries like Brazil and Mexico where civilians can't legally own guns have higher murder rates with barely a 10th of the guns we have in America...and we have more guns than most of the countries put together. For as many guns as we have, we do have a decently regulated, but extremely responsible civilian population of gun owners.
This article was nothing but, might have, could have, maybe could have. It is the people,,, yes the people is where we need to focus. The gun that Adam's mom bought didn't jump off the shelf and into her home by itself, it didn't go the Sandy Hook by its's self, it's the people.
Chris Rock has the best solution. Each bullet costs $5000 and only those with a mortgage gets a gun. Going through a mortgage process is a background check of sorts for one's stability. Plus, a lot of the mass murder nut jobs seem to live with their Mommies.
How will any of that stop criminals from getting guns and bullets? It will only start a black market on ammo. I agree many nut jobs live at home...so is that why Obama approved healthcare for 26 year olds living at home?
"A tough assault weapons ban might have blocked the sale of the Bushmaster XM-15 that Adam Lanza's mother bought legally and which police say he used to kill all his victims in the school."
Complete and utter bologna!
First of all, had his mom really wanted one, she could have easily found someone willing to sell her one of the million AR-15s already in law-abiding hands in the US. Only CONFISCATION of every AR-15 already owned could have prevented that.
Second, the 1994 assault weapons band had absolutely no positive effect five years later at Columbine. Look it up.
"A ban on high-capacity magazines might also have reduced the killing power of the weapons he brought to the school."
Once again, see Columbine. And, once again, anything less than the CONFISCATION of the hundreds of millions of magazines already in circulation will accomplish nothing.
THE PROBLEM in the Lanza home and in many, many other such incidents that I can document was that her weapons were not securely LOCKED AWAY in a home where someone with known MENTAL PROBLEMS lived and who was on psychoactive medications for it.
Of the recent mass shooters, 3 of 4 are known from media reports to have taken antidepressant meds and I've got a list of others that would fill multiple pages here. Here's some facts on those particular prescription drugs. If someone is taking these meds who has these genes, they should not be allowed to buy or possess firearms. Anyone living with them must be legally required to securely lock away all firearms.
If You Have These Genes, This Popular (Antidepressant) Drug Can Trigger Impulsive Violence
January 07, 2012
More than a decade ago, Dr. Yolande Lucire started noticing high rates of hospital admission and suicide among patients treated with antidepressant medications and antipsychotics.
Since then, she has gathered evidence that makes it clear that many people being treated with antidepressants can't metabolize them due to common genetic mutations.
According to Prevent Disease:
"[The enzyme] CYP2D6 (cytochrome P450 2D6) acts on one-fourth of all prescription drugs, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), beta blockers, opiates, neuroleptics, antiarrhythmics and a variety of toxic plant substances. Up to 15 percent of the population has a slow acting form of this enzyme and many of these a fast acting form. Thirty-five percent are carriers of a non-functional CYP2D6 allele, especially elevating the risk of adverse drug reactions when these individuals are taking multiple drugs... This means that potentially up to 1 billion people on the planet cannot metabolize and eliminate the commonly prescribed drugs from their bodies".
Antidepressants Among the Most Dangerous Drugs Available
The past few decades have been marked by a massive con job by the pharmaceutical industry. This deception has not only targeted you, the consumer, but also government agencies like the FDA and unsuspecting physicians who really believe they are helping their patients by prescribing antidepressants and other drugs. These treatments have been marketed as safe and effective, when in reality, they are neither.
It appears that antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs (also called neuroleptics) may be among the MOST dangerous drugs of all. Antidepressant drugs cause 40,000 deaths per year, yet they're handed out like candy to adults and children alike.
There is an entire web site database filled with stories of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) induced violence:
SSRI Stories
Antidepressant Nightmares
This website is a collection of 4,800+ news stories with the full media article available, mainly criminal in nature, that have appeared in the media (newspapers, TV, scientific journals) or that were part of FDA testimony in either 1991, 2004 or 2006, in which antidepressants are mentioned.
This web site focuses on the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), of which Prozac (fluoxetine) was the first. Other SSRIs are Zoloft (sertraline), Paxil (paroxetine) (known in the UK as Seroxat), Celexa (citalopam), Lexapro (escitalopram), and Luvox (fluvoxamine). Other newer antidepressants included in this list are Remeron (mirtazapine), Anafranil (clomipramine) and the SNRIs Effexor (venlafaxine), Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Pristiq (desvenlafaxine) as well as the dopamine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant Wellbutrin (bupropion) (also marketed as Zyban).
Although SSRI Stories only features cases which have appeared in the media, starting March 2012 there will be a Website which will allow personal stories to appear in a different Website from SSRI Stories. This is the work of Dr. David Healy.
but if you take away the rights of law-abiding citizens to get SSRIs, only the criminals will have them. The criminals will always find a way to get SSRIs. OMG!!! Don't come to my house looking for my SSRIs, you'll be sorry.
Petey Boy Williams would have been a man if he had a penis .... and a gun ....so whats his point?
Is this true NBC? Why hasnt this been more broadly reported?
NBC News reported that no assault rifle was used in Newtown shooting!! NBC, is that true?
Who told you that?
Or are you just repeating the lies of others?
Journalists like this one prove that writing a stupid article is only a justification for their job. This whole premise is ignorant. These murderers would still have killed even if any of Obama's ideas, or for that matter, even if any of the the laws on the books currently, would have been strictly enforced. You cannot legislate to freaks, crazies, or pshycos.
It appears to work in other countries with strict gun laws but of course you don't appear to be receptive to information that doesn't fit your narrative.
One of the reasons the US was formed was because of a tyranical oppressive government that seized it's citizen's weapons so they could not defend themselves from their oppressor. Hence the 2nd Amendment. How other countries choose to deal with their populations, and what those people are willing to accept, is up to them. Those countries still have murders and murderers despite strict gun laws. It appears from your narrative that anything other than some kind of legistlation limiting guns is the only thing you are receptive to. Perhaps moving to one of those other countries is an option.
I think I am in good company with Antonin Scalia that believes there are limits on the 2nd Amendment. Would you like Antonin Scalia to also consider leaving our country?
The wonderful thing about living in this country is that everyone has a right to believe in their own opinion. Justice Scalia's opinion is his own. I don't criticize other for their beliefs..if he choses to move, that's his right also.
No, actually you are the one proposing others move out of the country.
Actually all I said was "Perhaps moving to one of those other countries is an option." That is a choice if one thinks that other countries laws or beliefs are a better fit for them.
Why would I move to another country when I can bring ideas that actually work to our country? Your thinking is a bit ass backwards Mark.
What "works" in other countries means nothing about them "working" anyplace other than that country. Communism "works" in some countries. Socialism "works" in some countries. Dictatorship "works" in some countries. Thankfully here we have a representative government in which the majority rules. The founders figured out a way to make it "work". It's called the Constitution. Other countries don't have anything like it. " Why would I move to another country when I can bring ideas that actually work to our country? " is an ass backwards thought. Many others before you have tried ( Marx, Lenin, Stalin )...those ideas just don't "work".
Mark, ever hear of a person named Edward Deming? If not, Google him. You may actually learn something. I hope you don't work in the private sector because your outlook is antithetical to the what makes private enterprise EXTREMELY successful.
I AM the private sector. Have owned my own successful business for 24 years. I have two 4 year degrees, have been an Army Reservist for 14 years, have been elected to local public office, have been married for 15 years and have two children. You obviously don't understand what you suggested that I read.
One other suggestion: Read Ronald Reagan: An American Life. His writings will tell you how to a suceesful American.
This is what passes for journalism? What MIGHT have happened? Geez, NBC, why don't you just takes the title "News" right out of your programs and call it "complete speculation with no facts."
But since we're talking about what MIGHT have happened, maybe if this administration had been forthcoming about the Fast and Furious and Benghazi, Obama might have lost his bid for re-election. See how that works? Pure speculation.
And Fox News tries to pass itself as a news organization. Yada Yada Yada.
Actually they have been the #1 rated news program for several years now, and in 2011 they had 8 of the top 10 watched news shows. I guess making money isn't success to you liberals though.
Yeah, Fox certainly got it right during the Presidential election didn't they? LMFAO!!!!!!
And there you have it! Gullible followers that can't think for themselves=FAUX viewers
There was a study done showing Faux viewers as being low information, and uninformed...
Go figure!
What does Fox News have to do with NBC releasing such an incredibly speculative "article" and calling it news?
Don't read NBC news "articles" if they bother you so much.
The FIRST sentences clues you in to the "speculative" nature of the following "article".
All the whining about NBC's articles gets old. Don't like NBC, DON'T read it!
From a U.S. citizen living in S. Korea.....Here their law keeps weapons out of the hands of everyone. It is ok to own a rifle/shotgun. But, a person must keep it locked up at the local Police Office armory. He gets it out when he has some reason to shoot....i.e., wild pigs, deer destroying his crops; target practicing; etc. Some of the criminals who are caught do have small homemade handguns, or beefed-up airguns, that can do a person some damage. But, since living here, on and off, for some 30+ years, I have yet to hear of one person killed by a gun. They do kill with knives, or other ways. But, there have been no mass murders such as we have witnessed in the U.S. The police carry guns. But, I've seldom heard of them having to use them. What it would take for the U.S. to get to this point, I don't know. I really don't think it is possible, given the numbers that the criminals have, plus the fear that so many have about an unarmed citizenry. House-to-house searches by our police officers/military to confiscate as many weapons out of the hands of the criminals.......100% reporting of all weapons sales.......weapons training of anyone who purchases/owns a weapon...verified every year or two........and registering all who are criminals, those with mental problems, and others who (we, the people) would decide needed to be registered........really a difficult difficult, if not impossible, task. BUT......not doing anything is not acceptable to me, also. Please, don't think that I am trying to offer what I think must be done. I'm just sharing with all readers about what one country that we are associated with, and consider free, has done. I'm not saying that it would work. But, we have got to get cooler, non-political heads together, to try to protect - especially the kids - from this unacceptable result. We can't let politicians and the NRA make political hay out of our dead children. That, too, is unacceptable.
Need to go back.....make an amendment......about hearing about someone killed by guns. The South Koreans have had - a couple of times - a soldier who, for whatever reason, got ahold of one of the military weapons, and began shooting. And, there have been several North Korean spies who have been killed by the military, in shootouts. And.....in 1974, the S. Korean President's wife was killed by a N.Korean spy with a handgun. And, about 6 years later, that same President was killed by a handgun fired by a person whom he knew. When I said that I knew of no one being killed by a gun, I meant, in a shooting such as the ones being talked about. (Here the weapon of choice is the knife......usually a kitchen knife.)
Here are some real solutions that should be considered:
1. Stop making rock stars out of the Adam Lanza's of the world. A lot of these shooters are seeking fame and know they will get it once their name and face is all over the news. Stop reporting their names or showing their faces. Once they realize that a mass shooting isn't their ticket to fame, they will try something else to get the recognition they seek.
2. Get rid of "Gun Free" zones. This concept obviously isn't working, and may only attract a shooter if they know that there isn't any chance that they might be taken out by another armed person.
3. Have armed and trained security guards at schools. About the only thing that will take out a shooter is another shooter. The guards will also serve as a deterrent, as schools will not be thought of as an easy target.
4. Identify mentally unstable and dangerous people and make sure that they get the help that they need.
I know these things won't stop every tragedy from happening, but they will go a lot further than putting useless restrictions on law abiding people who aren't the problem.
And people like you should stop kissing the ass of gun manufacturers and traffickers. Simple solution.
And people like you just don't get it. Wait until you have one pointed at you. You may wish you had a fighting chance.
How am I kissing anyone's a$$? Your solution is asinine and you sound like an idiot.
Actually I have had a gun pointed at me but of course I am not a fearful little pansy that is easily manipulated by fear tactics from gun manufacturers and traffickers.
I've never met any gun manufacturers or traffickers, but I do believe in the US constitution. Hysterical and or feel good legislation is just that and won't save any lives or prevent the next shooting for happening. Just looking for solutions that will actually work here.
Rodney, that's the wonder of things called ADVERTISEMENTS. You don't have to actually have to be at the corporate headquarters to be fed the crap spewed by the NRA and gun manufacturers. Are you learning disabled?
No I'm not learning disabled, but obviously you worship at the alter of Obama and will never look at logic, facts, or solutions that might actually work. Have fun with your hysteria and feel good useless proposals. Please take them out and review the next time a shooting happens so you can see how they didn't work at all.
Poor learning disabled Rodney doesn't believe we need to do thorough background checks or have a national registry for deadly weapons. Sounds like somebody kissing the ass of gun manufacturers and traffickers.
Look Honey, A TROLL, quick, back to the car!
Look Honey, Rodney has an NRA script sticking out of his ass! Get a picture!! Let's post it on You Tube!!!
Rodney...Fantastic solutions! As for Salsa..guy..women..whatever...people like that probably believe that the US government flew planes into the Trade Center...don't bother writing back to them...they actually believe that people don't kill people...it's the fault of the means the murderers chose to use..gun, knife, bomb, rope, chemicals, car, airplane, stone, water....keep going
How cute. I think Mark wants to get a private room with Rodney.
No, actually with Antonin Scalia
There is hope for you Mark. Perhaps Scalia will teach you a little about the limits of the 2nd Amendment.
Anyone who believes that a bad guy is not going to obtain an assault rifle because Obama said not to needs the mental health care. I live in a gun control area and just the other day they shot the police captain with an AK47. He is a tough guy though and he lived even though he was hit in 3 spots. Point is I don't care what Obama does on gun control, the only thing he will achieve is the bad guys will have guns while law abiding citizens are disarmed.
Piggy, AK47's end up in a gun control area like yours because places like Virginia that let criminals buy weapons. Are you learning disabled?
Aren't you a genius. I think Virginia in the back country would be a good spot for you. They already know that this one came from Mexico, which probably means Obama gave it to them through Fast and Furious. Your King is learning disabled.
I'm not a genius. I simply take the time to get the facts instead of kissing the ass of gun manufacturers and traffickers.
SALSAFOREVER - You don't know the facts about Virginia. Virginia follows all of the Federal laws. We follow the Constitution. We do NOT, however, make it burdensome for law abiding citizens to obtain firearms. Please stay in New York and keep listening to Bloomberg... while you drink your small coke because apparently New Yorkers can't take care of themselves without government intervention.
Virginia is so far up the asses of gun manufacturers and traffickers. True story.
This entire issuehas, "Fractured American Society" as a catalyst more than anything
else that could happen. Our children are constantly subjected to the chronic,
"Brain-Washing" through their formative years by Non-Responsive
Parent's who simply use Television, music, video Games, peer's, external
environmental conditions, their own un-reliable decision making capabilities as
well as the, "Belief Systems and emotions" of the adult who has grown
up in a sheltered society completely withdrawn from the Freedom of personal
responsibility for the consequences and rewards of their own dys-functional
choices!
These are the same people who have determined that something outside of
themselves must be responsible for their choices and personal safety. [I.E.
"The Government!"]
The true choices of American Freedom are the, Constitution and Bill of Right's
which remain as the foundation of this freedom. No where in it does it state
the politicians who have deceived the vast majority that the politicians are
the true government [falsely] who have the responsibility to protect the
individual from physical harm or injury [falsely] is not written anywhere
within these Sacred Documents.
I hope you noticed that all but one of the perps listed were white and the lone one probably thought he was white. You can draw several conclusions from this article. I have my conclusion but I will let you draw your own.
Most of the post's herein are simply blame-shifting to whatever boogieman the prejudice beliefs
are of the writer. The fact of the matter is politicians and the special interest groups of "H [B]ollywood" want firearms restrictions so they only have access to all of these weapons. We did watch both the N.R.A.s and the Dave Attack show on meet the [un-biased???] press.
Actors for a plan [mis-representation of plan as gun control and not Hollywood
movies, video games, dys-functional parenting, Chicago example]] instead of the
monster's society creates with total abandon.
The answer is totally clear to us which is, "Pay attention while in
"Jeff Coopers" yellow at least all of the time, carry the power you
need equal and surpass the bad guy's, to stop the fight when and where it
erupts [as every one of us will be the victim of a violent crime at least once
in our lives' according to F.B.I.Stats] and simply accept responsibility for
the choices we make to protect ourselves and ours! Don't screw with my rifles
as the bad guys have as much if not more. I am not a victim if I choose this
route as I pretended to be when I didn't know any better and relied upon
other's for my safety!
And not one mention of pernicious gun manufacturers and traffickers that have our politicians in their back pocket. Get a clue.
Oh Come on...no one wants to take your guns...period. The sky is not falling. It must be terrable to be so parinoid and so subject to manipulation by fear mongering. I feel so sorry for the scared masses, it must suck to go through life like that. And for the ones who disagree just because President Obama is trying to do something about gun violence, who disagree about anything he tries to do, regardless if he is right or wrong...you suck, you are obsticles to fixing real problems... I would go around obstructions too... obstructions for the sake of being obstructive....also suck a big one...
Guns DON'T Kill Children............. but Abortions DO!
Hey Tim............ where's YOUR Outrage?
Hey Tim..... 50,000,000+ innocent, unborn children have been SLAIN since Roe v Wade in 1973.
50 MILLION!!! Want to save childrens LIVES? Ban ABORTION...... NOT Inanimate Objects!
ssmithlg,
Wrong article.
Let's consider this article from an entirley different perspective. What if, in these mass murders, there had been citizens with firearms and a permit to carry a concealed firearm? What would have happened then?
In the classrooms of Va Tech (Im an alumnus), Cho wouldn't have had ability to walk unchallenged leaving carnage. If he hadn't been stopped, he would have at least had to face his challenger(s) rather than murdering at will. Admittedly, in VA college students aren't likely to be armed because the legal age to carry a pistol is 21. However, It is likely someone in those buildings would have been. Professors? Upperclassmen?
Aurora? Likely to have had more armed citizens. Again, if they ddn't kill, they would have distracted and stopped him. Even in his armor, a couple of rounds to the torso would certainly knock him down and put him in pain. A shot to the unprotected groin area would have killed him as he bled out.
Newtown? A teacher? a secretary? ANYONE closeby? A resource officer? One gun would have saved lives. Provided more time for children to escape? Stopped the murderer?
You would probably be surprised at how many people actually carry a gun. I've taught gun safety classes. Men. women. Good ole Boys to corporate executives to youth to great grandmothers o teachers to pastors to secretaries to.... I taught a great grandmother how to shoot her Taurus .357 Magnum safely. Don't mess with great granny! The point is that people like ME are the NRA and are the 2nd Amendment supporters and are the ones many of you have erroneously categorized. I'm not a doomsday survivalist hoarder holed up in a cabin.
I am the NRA. I'm well educated. I'm a corporate executive. I'm the father of 3 boys. I'm a community leader. I volunteer in numerous youth organizations. I've travelled the world. I vote in every election. I pay my taxes. I've never taken a handout. I work every day. I've never been arrested or even close. I am a law abiding citizen. I hunt and I fish. I'm an environmentalist. I'm a Bible believing Christian. I love my wife, my only wife, and have been married over 25 years. I've worked hard to instill integrity into my sons, my staff, and my business. I strive daily to serve others. I believe in the Constitution as the supreme law of the United States of America and would defend it with my life if needed. I am the NRA.
Will those citizens of yours at the school be packing the same firepower as we currently allow on the streets? Bit of an unfair fight wouldn't you say unless we have Jerry the janitor packing an AR-15 too right?
I forgot to add, where guns are more accessible, crime rates drop. TX passed a right to carry law. Crime rates dropped. I think FL and TN did too with the same effects.
Conversely, look at Chicago. Tight gun controls. High crime rates. Washington, DC.? same. CT had an assault weapon ban. It worked well for Newtown, eh?
Conclusion, gun bans don't really work. They just make politicians feel good about themselves and raise their popularity amongst anti gun groups.
Salsa - they don't need to. One well placed shot is all it takes. Just because the bad guy carries an AR15 or a .44 magnum doesn't mean he can't be stopped with a .22. There isn't some magical force field or rules that come with heavier firearms. It isn't a video game.
On average, those who carry a concealed firearm are going to have training and practice. There are exceptions. Real life isn't like Hollywood where you simply trade shots and the one with the last bullet wins. It doesn't have to be wild west either. A challenge to a shooter can simply delay and distract a murderer until the police actually arrive with backup.
Wow!!! Shooter has no clue that weapons can be TRANSPORTED from Virginia to New York or Chicago. The ignorance is astounding. Let me guess Shooter? You still get from point A to point B by mule?
Salsa - go back to the scared little box you came from with your life partner and watch Oprah and Dr. Phil. Ignorance isn't my problem. It is quite the opposite.
My guess is you've never used any firearm unless it was a Red Ryder BB gun at some children's camp you were shipped off to. You've never killed anything to put meat on the table. You think source of food is the waiter or the take out delivery guy. You've never stalked game. Never followed a blood trail. I'm certain you never have been in a slaughterhouse. I'm assuming you actually eat meat. I bet you've never caught a rainbow trout. You wouldn't know the difference between a vulture and a hawk in flight. You've never seen a black bear in the wild. You think ducks and geese are things to only be seen at the park pond. You have never heard a flock of turkeys gobble at dawn. You wouldn't know how to load a shotgun, much less use it to hunt doves, ducks, or pheasant. You've never been startled by a ruffed grouse in the woods. You've never heard the call of the bobwhite quail in the evening. You've never heard the jingle of if peepers in the spring. This is my heritage. This is my life. I live beside the George Washington National Forest. I have whitetail deer walk up my road. I have black bear that scratch themselves on the tree behind my house. I can drink the water from my tap. Unless you are living my life, you cannot understand it. Unless you know responsible firearm usage and ownership, how can you chime in and tell me what I should or should not do with my firearms? I don't presume to tell you what salon to get your nails done at.
In Virginia, we still know manners. We say yes maam and yes sir for respect. We love sweet tea. We still pray before and/or after high school sports. Yes, in public. When our neighbor is in trouble, we all pitch in to help. We stand at the National Anthem. We pull our car to the side of the road when a funeral comes by. Our police escort the funerals! If my kids misbehave, I'm sure the closest adult with correct them, just as I will do for their kids. Our big event is the volunteer firemen's carnival where we see everyone.
If we have a murder, it's usually someone from out of town or state committing it. We don't have carjackings or muggings. If you leave your wallet in your unlocked car at night, it's going to be there the next morning. We don't have random home invasions. We do have a school resource officer, who is a deputy with the local sherriff's department. He knows every kid from kindergarten to 12th grade by name... and he cares for them.
You can't understand my life or my perspective.
The 2nd Amendment guarantees my rights to ownership and usage as an individual. It is not something that is need based. It has been upheld by the Supreme Court. Virginia follows that legal doctrine.
People transport gun across state lines all the time. Virginia got an unfair reputation because of that twit Bloomberg who thought he could blame others for his woes, just like a Democrat! I think he is the only one worse than Cuomo. I hope they do take guns in NY, as Cuomo suggested recently. Then only the criminals will have them and they will all go there.
If you think the problem is that firearms were transported from Virginia to Chicago, then you are a victim waiting to happen. Don't come to Virginia. We don't want you.
BTW... I don't use a mule... I ride a jackass like you.
After reading the un-leashed liberal hatred on these post's
demanding the, "Head of the prisoner" to be exhibited in public so to
speak, we are quite alarmed by them in their entirety! After being involved
with training Law-Enforcement from Federal, State [4 States] and local
including "Ranger's" for over 40 years and supporting the American
Constitution and Bill of Rights's with our lives's it becomes apparent many
herein do not accept the American freedom of responsibility to utilize the
first amendment guarantee's in any responsible manner! How is any meaningful dialog
possible with this type of expression of false raging superiority who simply
want to attack those whom you have no experience with? We have worked with
certain militias who were incredibly service oriented people while at the same
time keeping their military and law-enforcement skills current. Some herein
have called, "Randy Weaver" at Ruby Ridge a militia member when in fact
we knew him and he just wanted to be left alone. He was coerced into modifying
a shot-gun by federal agent's and after federal agent's snipers killed his son,
wife and dog while permanently crippling his Friend without cause except for
not showing up at a court date. Were his liberties taken from him as in the
pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Most viperous liberal poster's
herein would recognize that, but it appears only for themselves! He finally did
receive a multi-million dollar settlement from the F.B.I. in the form of your
tax-payer dollars for their, "Mistake[???]" Stop the hatred or your
group may be targeted next for investigation as a, "Hate-Group!"
Thanks dragonmaster6. Another act of tyranny of our government against its citizens was in Waco TX.
How many children did our own government KILL there?
The shooter in Newton never got the Bushmaster out of the trunk of his car. But anything for sensationalism, right?
I was issued an M-14 when I went in the Marine Corps in 1969
as these were being phased out and replaced by the M-16. It was the rifle I was
trained on to protect my country and I have felt comfortable enough to use it
for hunting in the last 40 years. I also
feel as comfortable as I can be; if un-foreseen circumstances occur [which they
have on occasion because of law-enforcement experiences'] to protect my family
and other's from the idiocy that develops in our society now! The fact is, our
society is different now than it was in, "The Good Ol'e Days" before. What has primarily changed is; The Media
coverage of every sick act of violence in giving the perpetrator all of the
attention they feel they lack because of parental neglect in up-bringing,
vicious brainwashing video games demanded as societal baby-sitter's [during behaviorally
formative years of children’s lives’], total lack of, Values of respect,
courage, honor, empathy, trust, appreciation, as well as other's. The drugs in our society whether medically
prescribed or illicit are epidemic and makes no difference if they are given to
the wrong mind's of anyone! Our
politicians who, "Never let a ["Good Crisis???"] go to waste to support their own personal
agendas emanating from their own fear and greed are creating a fractured
America, while mis-directing from the real issues which would preclude
themselves from any responsibility! Our current Golfer -in chief, commediane in
chief, apologist in chief is an excellent example. Neither he nor Rahm is able
to stop the criminal, drugged elements in Chicago much less anywhere else! An
armed guard in every school should have been allowed all along as these are
partly the reasons our kids are in trouble. This is the environment that has
been, "Caused" by these and some other reasons none of which has
anything to do with the in-animate object of the fire-arm. The questions those
irresponsible people who demand an end of fire-arms [Slippery Slope] need to
ask; 1. Will any of Feinsteins dillusions solve the criminal and mentally ill
problem[?] 2. How many rifles are out there with magizine's [not clips
ignoramous] already and is this also indicating the slippery slope, 3.Do you
trust your politicians [either party] to decide for you as an individual what
is right, true and correct for you uniquely? 4. If the second amendment of,
"The Constitution and Bill of Rights" is tampered with; then what do
you think would be next on the list to be tampered within, "First
Amendment of the Constitution and Bill of Right's? After watching both the
N.R.A.s presentation on Friday as well as the "Meet the Press" today
it becomes quite obvious that we will be re-joining the N.R.A. to speack on our
behalf because the moderator [David something] on Meet the Press was totally
biased {Un-Biased Journalism is a lie told to us by the journalist's} and was
totally in a supreme attack mode when he began while not letting Wayne LaPerrie
even answer the questions! This, "Meet the Press" would have been
more accurately advertized as the David Attack Show!" David you were
totally un-professional in our opinion! We will hang onto our ar-15s and
magizines [not clips ignoramous] as well as others and since the fracturing has
begun only we as American Citizens who Value all of our freedoms will bring
America baxck together without being, "Rescued by the likes of Schummer,
Feinstein, and the Whack-Job Blumberg from N.Y.C. who has not solved crime in
his myopic wet dream of a, "GUN-FREE-ZONE!!! The fact is, The N.R.A. is
the supreme firearms safety training organization in America today offering
training to children [no cost], Home firearm safety, pistol safety, rifle
safety, shotgun safety, personal protection, muzzle loading rifle, pistol,
shotgun safety, as well as advanced trainings' for law enforcement instructor's
such as we were before retirement. We trained Law-forcement from Federal, State
as well as local agencies for over forty years and none of them ever engaged in
criminal activity with a fire-arm of any kind! Israel has the answer and all
who know enforcement, know this!
Well said
So if we extrapolate on Pete Williams supposition, and all guns cease to exist, are we to believe crazy people will no longer commit mass murder? Our muslem brothers kicked off their massacre of 3000 some with a box cutter.
Only by carrying them onto an aircraft, which they then seized to use as "a weapon." And, yes, we banned box cutters from passenger aircraft. The passage of any law will never completely eliminate violations of that law, but only reduce the probability of occurence. If it eliminated all deviate behavior, there was probably less devaite behavior than thought, making the law unnecessary in the first place.
If all guns were to cease to exist, are we to believe crazy people will no longer commit mass murder?
No...it would only remove a handy tool for the commission of mass murder. I believe I read something recently about an incident in China, where an insane person attacked school children with a knife. He wounded many before being stopped; he killed no one. Removal of guns - or types of guns - will not eliminate mass murder by crazy people, but reduce the "probability" of mass murder by crazy people.
