The only thing sensible is the psych background check. Everything else if fluff to make people feel good and like they did something to stop this from happening again.
Do you really want the gun nutz (represented by the NRA) dictating the safety of your children. The NRA simply wants to put out as many guns of as much variety and killing power as possible. They will only pay lip service to safety. Do you want them making your laws?
No more extremists! No more NRA in american politics
OH Snap! Run for your life idiots, you had better drop your savings on ammo because you might be in hiding for awhile. I will come and get you when nothing happens.
It has nothing to do with deer. Try again ! It has EVERYTHING to do with infringement upon 2nd amendment rights which Obama seems hell bent on destroying !
Mr. Haggis, Mr. Mockingbyrd, Mr. Amer. Tali. et al;
The year was 1992, twenty years ago, when following a jury trial, four Los Angeles Police Department officers were acquitted, in April, after being accused in the video recorded beating of a black American named Rodney King.
As a result, people throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area rioted over six days because of the verdict. They engaged in widespread looting, assault, arson, and even murder. The damage these criminals caused was well over $1 billion!
The rioting finally came to a halt after the California National Guard, along with U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton were called in to help stop them.
During the riots, more than 60 people were killed and over 4,000 were injured.
On April 30, the second day of the riots, Korean-Americans saw the police fall back from Koreatown, leaving them to defend themselves in the midst of heavy looting and fires. A store owner at the time, Jay Rhee, told the Los Angeles Times, “we have lost faith in the police.”
In the shadow of a flaming mini-mall near the corner of 5th and Western, behind a barricade of luxury sedans and battered grocery trucks, they built Firebase Koreatown.
Richard Rhee, owner of the supermarket on the corner, had watched as roving bands of looters ransacked and burned Korean-owned businesses on virtually every block.
But here, it would be different.
“Burn this down after 33 years?” asked Rhee, a survivor of the Korean War, the Watts riots and three decades of business in Los Angeles. “They don’t know how hard I’ve worked. This is my market and I’m going to protect it.”
From the rooftop of his supermarket, a group of Koreans armed with shotguns and automatic weapons peered onto the smoky streets. Scores of others, carrying steel pipes, pistols and automatic rifles, paced through the darkened parking lot in anticipation of an assault by looters.
“It’s just like war,” Rhee said, surveying his makeshift command. “I’ll shoot and worry about the law later.”
From tiny liquor stores in South-Central Los Angeles to the upscale boutiques in Mid-Wilshire, Korean store owners have turned their pastel-colored mini-malls into fortresses against the looter’s tide.
For many store owners, the riots have become a watershed in the struggle for the survival of their community.
The store owners shot off at least 500 rounds into the sky and ground to break up masses of people that were looting. They could have only accomplished that with the types of weapons they were using.
By the end of that first day of defending themselves, they have killed four looters and beat back the mob that had moved into their area.
Though they desperately tried to get the police to respond, even asking “Where were you when we needed you?” police would not show up for another 24 hours. Additionally, it was reported that 200 police uniforms had been stolen and according to a Korean radio announcer at the time, “We cannot trust a person just because they are wearing a uniform.”
Eventually things were brought under control. However, understand that the Clinton signed “assault weapons ban” was just two years later. Imagine if that had been in place when the rioting took place. It is highly possible that many of these Korean-Americans would not have been able to defend themselves, their property or their families and obviously the police were not very effective.
So I ask those who may read this article who are in favor of gun bans, more gun laws, and simply more control, are you willing to simply stand for government telling you how you can and cannot defend yourself, your family and your property? You better think this through before you go calling for it. After all, if the police in LA will abandon the people of Koreatown, what makes you think they won’t leave you to fend for yourself should something similar take place in your neighborhood.
In your example, 60 people died during 6 days of rioting in Los Angeles in 1992. This despite weapons being available to citizens and, by your description, being used. You are understandably concerned.
And yet you would not react to 20 children being shot multiple times in a few minutes. And yet you use this to defend your right to have even more powerful and destructive weapons then were available in 1992.
The people used those weapons to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their property. They availed themselves of their constitutional right to do so when the law itself would not render neither aid or assistance, had they not done so, the body count no doubt would have been much higher.
The tragedy in Connecticut is just that, because of one warped mind for whatever reason that we can only speculate now that commited this atrocity, has ruined and infected more lives than we might know. I sir have a 5 yr. old granddaughter, and I shudder to think if I lost her, even more so in an event such as this. She is the last of my line and if anything happens to her my name and blood are gone from this world, so yes I DID take notice, yes I DID cry for those people, and YES I HAVE PRAYED FOR THEM that the Lord gives them peace, as I believe if I lost my granddaughter I know I would be inconsolable and would find no joy further in my life from that day on.
And yes Mr. Fielden, if you are ever in the upstate N.Y. area you may ask at the American Legion where I am Chaplain about me. They will tell you I always try to be the man that walks the picket fence and try to see both sides of every story. No, I am not perfect and I have made errors in judgement in the past, but, on this much I know, we will always have tragediessuch as this and I cannot give you an answer why, but as a veteran and an American I once took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, with my life's blood if necessary, and I don't believe there will ever be an expiration date on that promise, because for many men and women that were better than I, that promise they made is the reason you and I can sit down with a cup of coffee someday (if you wish) and put our heads together and maybe come up with an answer that will make everybody happy for this volatile problem in OUR country. Until that day sir, I respect your right to differ with me and see things from your side of the fence. Shalom, Mike
Just finished listening to the Presidents proposals and the funny thing is, NO where did I hear him say he's gonna take away guns from responsible gun owners...
I think it's time we organize a march on DC to demonstrate our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, supersedes the rights those of the Yosemite Sam's...
So, So proud of our President today! There is much work to be done in regards to guns in our country so that we don't trample the rights of responsible Americans, and also so that we keep as many people in our country safer, especially and most importantly, IMO, our children. No parent should ever have to live the rest of their lives grieving for a child who was slaughtered by a gun.
Domenico, so true. I for one had hoped that the NRA would come out responsibly after the shootings in Newtown, but as you stated - those who thought that were sorely mistaken.
Thank you President Obama for being a leader in taking on yet another controversial subject that Americans need to address in a rational and adult manner.
Simply amazing how this nation can’t put aside its differences and agree on doing just one thing to protect the children of this country.
We now interrupt this program to bring you the following message:
“You don’t need no gun control, you know what you need? We need some bullet control. Men, we need to control the bullets, that’s right. I think all bullets should cost five thousand dollars… five thousand dollars per bullet… You know why? Cause if a bullet cost five thousand dollars there would be no more innocent bystanders. Yeah! Every time somebody get shut we’d say, ‘Damn, he must have done something ... @!$%#, he’s got fifty thousand dollars’ worth of bullets in his ass.’ Chris Rock
Morgs74 - responsible pool owners have their pools covered and alarms on them. However, I have never heard of a mass murderer using a pool as a weapon. Please cite the instance.
Hollywood is as much to blame for this as anyone. They have glamorized affairs, sex and the deterioration of our families. They have glamorized violence. But very few are screaming about what they represent, no only the NRA. The NRA supports the Second Amendment. They do not encourage or support violence, can't say that for Hollywood.
SeekingSanity - Look at the stats and make a reasonable decision about what is important and what is fluff, feel good stuff. All these laws do is make you ass clowns feel like you did something important. Guess what, you stopped nothing. Nothing. All they did was add more bureaucracy to an already over bureaucratic nation.
HIPPA laws will soon mean nothinng as your psych info will not be relayed on to big brother. Mentally ill gun owners in NY will no longer seek the help they need because they will get their guns taken away. After a couple snaps you will see another massacre. And SeekingSanity will sit there with his dick swing in the wind asking what went wrong. Well nothing a few more laws can't fix.
So again we have more distractions to keep this President from doing his REAL job and that is getting this economy back on tract! He is suppose to be cutting cost and expenses; he has already up'd everyones taxes and now is whinning about not getting a larger debt ceiling. How about making a budget like everyone else and stop paying out money on things that we can LIVE without!!. Big Bird needs to go, President Obama!!! Why don't you send some of those guys who protect your children while they are at school to protect ours, if that is in fact what you are really worried about!! Or better yet stop sending Assault weapons to Mexico Drug Lords/cartels so they can kill some more of the Mexican citizens to get what they want!!..How about the kids of MEXICO aren't they important..This government seems to think it is ok to give all kinds of guns and ammo to crimminals across the boarder..Sounds like some double crap to me....According to the media that guy who killed 26 kids and adults used hand guns not assault weapons..seems like he had a mental problem, but the guns he used were not even his and certainly where there is a will there is always a way to do what you want to do..They are teaching kids how to make bombs on the internet, forget the guns..How much is all this going to cost us???
I support the President in his push to address gun violence. Nobody elected the NRA to national office. They are lobbyists for gun manufacturers, for crying out loud. They have a financial reason for opposing commonsense regulations.
Spot on, Amy, and not to mention that the propaganda ad that the NRA put out about the President and his children is nothing short of disgusting. The NRA is disgusting, and any normal minded person who is a current member should do themselves a favor and QUIT their membership, NOW!
Agree, Amy. The NRA does have some programs like gun safety but their main purpose is to lobby on behalf of gun & ammo manufacturers. And that ad they put out is absolutely chilling. To use the President's children in such a way is appalling. Those children are at risk because of the work their father does. Children going to school shouldn't be at risk and that is what the President is trying to do. If I ever got the chance to meet the President I think I would feel compelled to apologize for all that he and his family have endured in service to our country.
The fact that less than 30 days after the Sandy Hook massacre the NRA promoted an App that let's children ages 4 and up practice their shooting skills on caskets nonetheless is very telling about who and what the NRA is. After the uproar, they changed the age to 12 and up. How considerate of them.
You Liberals are unbelievable. You have no problem with Obama using the massacre of children for political purposes but yet you demonize the NRA. Now if you believed in the Second Amendment as strongly as you do the First Amendment, my guess is you would be singing a different tune. Just remember what is going on in Syria by their own government.
Huh, individual Syrians couldn't own guns anyway, so what isn't political about 26 shredded children and adults, an oh well--business a usual until the next one, the next one, the next one. we have to do something and be sane about it--doing nothing only encourages carnage by ignoring it. Status quo not acceptable.
Jersy Girl, you conservatives are unbelieveable. It is the job of the President to respond to tragedies like this by seeking ways to minimize the chances they happen again.
We the people must now pick up the mantle and run with it for the lives of our children. The President and Vice President have done their diligence in bringing this debate to the forefront and initiating legislation to curtail the ability of a "Newton, Ct." EVER happening again on our soil. But it might just take bringing down the entire NRA & Republican Party with it, if we are going to see progressive results from this undertaking. The NRA is so far removed from reality, it actually is scary at this point. We CANNOT, as a nation., let this "fly-by-night" organization dictate the gun rules of our country. Let us all do, what we must do to help put an end to the violence - particularly caused by high-power weaponry. And that ad the NRA came out with, profiling the Obama daughters - is just the last straw. I consider this organization to be anti-American and terrioristic in nature. THEY are the enemy and must be viewe as such.
The President and Vice President as usual give lip service to anyone who disagrees with them and then acts as if they listened. What a joke. Remember the commission they assembled on the debt situtation? How many ideas have they implemented from that? Nothing but LIP SERVICE.
skyparrot - yes it is definite action an positive action. And, just to head this off - the 23 Executive orders still leaves him far short of the number Bush signed.
skyparrot - alas, no Covington for me recently but my brother says things there are going well. Chicago has taken a definite COLD turn! How are you doing?
"if there's even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there's even one life that can be saved, then we've got an obligation to try it."
I agree with my President.
I was not able to hear Obama's speech but from the reports it appears to handle everything from a ban on assualt weapons, to closing loopholes and tracking private sales, to universal checks and screenings.
Was there a mental health aspect, will more funding go to mental health services? Will republican governors accept that funding or will they cut their people's HHS health and human services along with their refusal to help implement Obama care?
The swarm is about to descend--the right wing heads are exploding, hair on fire, going into orbit and zooming past Jupiter. Not one proposal outlandish or unreasonable. Of course the screaming and threats of rebellion will commence. I just wish he May have said something about taxing ammo up the wazoo from start to butt end finish.
However, as a gun owner and concealed carry permit holder, not one proposal went against any constitutional or personal conviction--no mention, hint, inference, innuendo on repealing, modifying, confiscation of 2nd A rights.
Control your hysteria RNA adherents--we are not going to give up in having sane, rational weapons control.
In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 - 1953 about 20 million dissidents, unable to protect themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 - 1917, 1.5M Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938, and from 1939 - 1945, a total of 13M Jews and other who were unable to protect themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 - 1952, 20M political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. Over 100K Mayan Indians, unable to dfend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971-1977, over 300K Christians, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975-1977, over 1M educated people, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
Could this happen in the US if the libbies abridge the Second Amendment, or the Constitution? I would doubt it, for the rule of law would, hopefully, be recognized by the population. Except for the left-wing whacko sock puppets.
Now this post should get the yahoo liberals agog. Please use more interesting negative comments than those stale, old, white lady comments of before.
Hey neweday, have your old lady sandles on today? Look interesting in that pic from the internet; old, stale and grey.
I will keep your homework simple ... how many of the 6million Jews owned guns before 1938? Once you have completed that task you can go on to numbering the amount of those 20million Chinese who possessed firearms pre 1935.
or Armenians being marched off, Chinese, Guatemalans, Ugandans, or Native Americans, or Japanese Americans, Cambodia--don't go there--we had big nasty fist in overthrowing the King and the Kmer Rouge took over. 1Funny, you are full elephant dung drops.
Note all of those locations were under a fascist or socialistic style dictator. We are a democratic republic. The recommendations set out today were not about confiscating weapons. As a part of the legislative process hopefully a sensible bill can be passed.
Could this happen in the US if liberals...
We are not trying to abridge/repeal/replace the 2nd amendment.
A suggestion for conspiracy related tyrannical government types don't worry NBC's Revolution is coming back to your TV soon.
FreeThinker - oooooh I couldn't resist. I see you are trying to actually communicate with neverbeenfunnyb*tch. It's truly useless. And, "sock puppet?" My guess is she's the sock - that's gone though the washer and dryer cycles wayyyyyyy too many times!
1funny, how much is the RNC paying you to post, by the word or the post? Usual elephant mocking and demeaning verbiage--try to make a point without being so derogatory and derisive, you might earn some credibility.
Once again the Liberals seem to think that they are intelligent and the free thinkers when in fact they are stupid and controlled by the Liberal media. Liberals you are nothing but sheeples bowing and drooling over your leader. Disgusting. If you even had an original thought in your brain, I would be amazed.
Once again the Liberals seem to think that they are intelligent and the free thinkers when in fact they are stupid and controlled by the Liberal media. Liberals you are nothing but sheeples bowing and drooling over your leader. Disgusting. If you even had an original thought in your brain, I would be amazed.
Could you please point out the originality in your post? I seem to have read the same diatribe of drool for months on end.
Are all Republicans mentally challenged? All the law proposes to do is try to prevent criminals, wackos and those who pose a danger to society from obtaining a gun. No one is proposing to take away a resposible law-abiding citizen's gun.
It will not be perfect, but it will be better than what we have now. Again, if you're a law-abiding, sane person, you have nothing to worry about.
Jersey, familiar right wing talking point about original thoughts, take your own advice--free thinking and controlled incompatible in the same dank breath. Considering the amount of slobbering, and panting the right did over Romney surprised you people still have some spit to spew
Obama reveals plan and the liberal-left sock puppets smack their palms together to acknowledge his success.
California has had every one of his policy points in effect for some time, exceeding what the Prez. asked for. Look at our gun violance in the state and realize, it isn't working here. The gangs still have guns, and the innocent suffer.
If it isn't working in the land of fruits and nuts, it won't be an effective plan in the US.
And I loved how Obama brought out the little kids, using them as pawns in his campaign.
Oh, and for the Insanity from Duke, were you one of the old grey-haired, pale and stale folks in the libsrus baseball game photo? I laughed myself silly when I saw it on the internet.
@bcwc, Read your history re the Jewish rebellions in Poland against the Germans. A small group of armed Jews held out against larger odds. Also Germans did against the remaining population after the defeat.
@skyparrot
1Funny, you are full elephant dung drops.
There you go skyparrot, you're becoming more original with you negative comments on the opposition!I suspect you have mucho elephant dung drops in your abode?
Sorry, " funny creature": can't think who you are seeing a picture of. You would never be able to keep up with me, that is, unless you would like to try to saddle and get on my horse? She doesn't suffer fools gladly, and is quick to sort them out. It would be fun to watch.
Well newday, I thought the rather large old lady with the little old lady shoes for fat people might be a fit.She was sitting at the table with a little old grey haired guy with a baseball hat on. In the South, such a mix would be called a redneck event.
Love to saddle your horse and ride. I do it daily, taking a spirited gelding named Devil over the jumps. If yours doesn't suffer folls gladly, I guess you don't ride much.
Are all Republicans mentally challenged? What part of this don't you understand?
All the law proposes to do is try to prevent criminals, wackos and those who pose a danger to society from obtaining a gun. No one is proposing to take away a responsible law-abiding citizen's gun.

THe GOP/Teabeggers have never read German History during the Nazi Period. Hitler dd not believe in any gun control at all. He expanded gun production a very fast pace, and all Nazi Party members were highly motivated to buy guns. Now only those people 'who did not belong" could never own a gun in Nazi Germany. The Hitler Youth were trained very early in life to use Assult Weapons of all kinds. The rearming of Germany that started in 1933 included no gun control laws for those 'who did belong." Now ignorantly stating that President Obama is a Hitler. Is an ignorant statement based on no historical facts. The Nuremburg Laws of 1936 made it clear that minorities are expendible on all levels. The President would be in the those 'who do not belong' category. The Cognitively Disabled Teabeggers need to research the Nazi Party Racial Laws from 1933 to 1938. Now reading, researching, and thinking are very difficult for most Teabeggers. Get educated Teabeggers and then talk!
I don't recall this kind of massive public outcry back in 2006 when 5 little Amish girls were slaughtered in their Lancaster, PA school by another crazed person with a legal gun. What is different about the Newtown tragedy other than 15 more innocents were killed.
In 2012 Chgo had 506 murders and thru Jan 8, we had another 12 murders....which last time I checked was against the law....yet it did not stop the carnage.
The problem is not the availability of guns it is the mentality and morality of the people who find killing to be a solution.
About 6 thousand years ago, Almight God said....Thou Shalt Not Kill.....why do we think that any law coming from our lawmakers will be more effective.
Perhaps if more people were trained armed (like in Switzerland), such tragedies could be reduced.
At what point in American history did it become necassary for every jackwagon on the block to own an AR-15, AK-47, or other semi-auto gun that had a magazine capacity of 25 or 30 shots? I love hunting and target shooting, but when I was younger all my friend's parents had hunting guns around, maybe an occasional pistol here and there, but now days you go to a gun show and hunting guns are becoming few and far between. These high-cap semi autos where designed for military use, not everyday civilians. There are just too many of us, for all of us to be totting these things around.
Many people in their posts have said it before. Enforce the laws on the books. Remove the criminals from the streets and crime disappears. People have multiple felony arrests but no convictions because of plea bargaining. Some previouly have posted, "What happens when a criminal uses that 10 round clip to kill?" Do we now go to a 7 round clip? Read the writing on the wall. Another law is meaningless if the criminals are not prosecuted.
I feel very bad about SH! Reality is NO LAW will ever stop or even slow down a Criminal or a Mental person. The only things Laws do is give parameter’s to law abiding citizens on what is allowed or not allowed. Argue as you like but that is the truth.
After what the NRA said today anything makes Republicans look smart. No matter what obama would have said about stopping violence and saving our kids , the right would have crap to say like always.
This is why the Republican party in 10 years will be gone. Stupid brainwashed affraid people who can't exist without a gun. None of you even know what a well regulated malitia means.
SIEG HEIL!
As our V-P said we have a
"Moral obligation to do everything in our power to diminish the prospect" of something like Newtown ever happening again".
The President said, there is,
"No law can prevent every act of violence completely....every sort of evil...if even one life can be saved...then we have an obligation to try."
And these two caring leaders are saying what the majority of Americans - parents, sisters, sons, daughters, brothers believe to be right and just.
where is Skynet when you need it. Eric Harris tried to blow up columbine yet we still have propane tanks...
Said he of the Hole, where the Heart used to be.

@!$%#, he’s got fifty thousand dollars’ worth of bullets in his ass.’

CA, what proposals do you object to?
Where is the bill to have mandatory pool coverings for homes? This is a child killer.
Morgs74
Consider yourself fortunate that ridiculous questions do little harm.
Morgs, so is starvation, abuse, and guns.
JERSY GIRL 1
Sex is the better part of living ... long live its glamorization.
TomasGrande, I love me some Chris Rock:
I ainta scared of Al-Quida, I'ma scared of AlCracker!
You Betcha!
Occupy SoggyBottom!
So how do you categorize those seeking to amass an arsenal of weapons in their home? Are they shoring up power? Are they seeking it by force?
I agree Amy.
BS, 23 Executive orders is not lip-service, its action and positive action.
skyparrot - yes it is definite action an positive action. And, just to head this off - the 23 Executive orders still leaves him far short of the number Bush signed.
Seeking, how things in Covington?
Oh, yes Bush=291 EO as opposed to the President's to date=144, big, big difference. Also, Executive Privilege, the President 1 and Bush 6.
skyparrot - alas, no Covington for me recently but my brother says things there are going well.
The argument is the same one that was posited post 9-11 ... oddly there were few if any complaints then.
YET
YET what--say something rational instead of advocating for the status quo and the oh, well too bad attitude, baloney.

How about not hiring them and legalize pot--cheaper and less deadly.
1funnygirl
I will keep your homework simple ... how many of the 6million Jews owned guns before 1938? Once you have completed that task you can go on to numbering the amount of those 20million Chinese who possessed firearms pre 1935.
or Armenians being marched off, Chinese, Guatemalans, Ugandans, or Native Americans, or Japanese Americans, Cambodia--don't go there--we had big nasty fist in overthrowing the King and the Kmer Rouge took over. 1Funny, you are full elephant dung drops.
1funnygirl-
Looks like you've been getting your talking points from Drudge again.

1funnygirl
You seem to use this "sock puppet" reference frequently.
Did you made that up all by yourself? Or are you a puppet as well?
JERSY GIRL 1
@skyparrot
There you go skyparrot, you're becoming more original with you negative comments on the opposition!I suspect you have mucho elephant dung drops in your abode?
@TomasGrande,
Nope, don't have time to read Drudge.
para su salad gilipollas
@freethinker,
Nope and nope. Try to be more original next time.

Read anyone's history and tell me how the armies of France, Poland, Belgium etc. stopped the Germans.
Of course you do, funny creature.
See my horse has this trick she pulls on people she doesn't like. She...nah, will let you find out.
More like Obama gone stupid.
Please clarify "stupid."
Please clarify stupid - libsrus libbies. OKAY?
Are all Republicans mentally challenged? What part of this don't you understand?
All the law proposes to do is try to prevent criminals, wackos and those who pose a danger to society from obtaining a gun. No one is proposing to take away a responsible law-abiding citizen's gun.
It will not be perfect, but it will be better than what we have now. Again, if you're a law-abiding, sane person, you have nothing to worry about.
Perhaps if more people were trained armed (like in Switzerland), such tragedies could be reduced.
i am surprised that the nra hasn't advocated that all teachers be issued "flame-throwers".
What about spoons all over America? Ban them fat people will die!
Pete Chgo, you make way too much sense for most of these people to comprehend.
Watch his democrat buddies run away from this one. I wonder why! lol
What about spoons all over America? Ban them fat people will die!
Such silly brainwashed hillbilly minds the right is. F--- America believe what evil lying people tell you. A bunch of friggen parrots you are.
Draem on watch all the people with a 2 IQ like you follow and laugh behind you like a Jackass Heeh Haw.
This is why the Republican party in 10 years will be gone. Stupid brainwashed affraid people who can't exist without a gun. None of you even know what a well regulated malitia means.
