The White House is hitting back at the National Rifle Association for its web video, which refers to President Obama's children.
"Most Americans agree that a president's children should not be used as pawns in a political fight," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. "But to go so far as to make the safety of the president's children the subject of an attack ad is repugnant and cowardly."
Here's the transcript of the NRA's ad:
"Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. But he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids. And gun-free zones for ours.”

It is clear that there was an assault type weapon that could discharge that many bullets in that short a time into the bodies of those small bodies. As he said some things will be swift and some slow but we will do something.
If he had a regular gun many children would have been spared. Now let me ask you if your child is in the mall and there are three security guards there but not in not in the area your child was in, what would you prefer someone with a hand gun of someone spraying bullets hitting multiple people without ceasing? Hand guns can kill but assault weapons do mas destruction. My child might survive with one bullet in her but not ten bullets made to pulverize her body Or how about just giving every one a hand grenade to throw if they feel threatened or just plain crazy. That should take care of things. Each step we take toward bigger and badder weapons the more uncivilized we are becoming.
Exactly. If the coward had to reload more often, perhaps he could have been charged and disarmed. If it only saved one child's life, is that not worth it?
No, it isn't. Because causing everyone (not just "cowards") to have to reload after seven rounds, as NY has done, will cost many more innocent lives than it saves. You make the classic mistake of looking at benefits without considering costs.
You have absolutely no proof to back that up.
Ideally, shouldn't we be looking for solutions that prevent these things from happening at all? There is no evidence to suggest having to reload more often would have made any difference. What about other shootings in which an assault weapon was not used........since maybe "not as many" people were killed, you going to hold those up as success stories?
Let's see... Obama used EO to gain illegal immigration votes from illegal surporters and how he won..
Obama used (played) storm of the century victims to insure there votes.. how fast he acted before and how slow after winning it ..
Now he is useing kids to surport his gun ban .. the NRA is coming it like they see it!
Crazy,
Your moniker tells us here on the vine all we need to know.
Get a grip and post again when you are part of the Human Race.
CrazyCrave it was the Congress that moved slow remember they hold the purse and refused to release it. Bohner actually killed it on the floor. Oops you don't remember that do you cause you are so blinded by the OBama hatred that is inflicting so many of you. My prayer list is getting mightly long but God is patient and will hear all the names.
It was FEMA that crawled along, slower than after Katrina.
I believe that "RepublicansForObama-6186389" will be the next one to shoot into a crowd of people.
I guess Obama's kids are better than ours. Doesn't surprise me that he and his sheeple think that way.
Idiot Repubs want GUNS everywhere. Hell, why not give grade schoolers guns???
Morons!
you're the moron suggesting giving grade schoolers guns. does that really sound sane to you?
It does to the NRA since they want them to get used to pulling a trigger and hitting a target. Sicko NRA
What do you REALLY know of the NRA?
Demon
I've seen some ignorant postings on this website but i think you won the Nimrod award. Lets see your next one, going for a twofer.
OK for those of you who are upset that the NRA used Obama's kids to make a point. Let's remember that Obama had no trouble dragging his family around the country while trying to convince you that you should vote for him and NONE of you had a problem with that. It is a fact the his kids go to school and everywhere they go the have an armed guard escort via the Secret Service. It is also a shame that Obama is using the deaths of the children in CT to once again sell his ideas to you that the average person is not safe anymore. He can't use his own kids because they are alive and well guarded.
Krik,
Duh. Something enlightening?
He can not choose when and how his family is to be made an example. It is as simple as that.
Obama's kids where very seldom with him as he pointed out they were often home with his MOther in Law but the rest of the flock of REpublicans running did pull their children around. Especially the republican VP on the ticket (what was his name again) Obama is not using the deaths of these children to do nothing less than we sane Americans have demanded of him. We raised the flag for him to carry regarding gun control. Even many high ranking republicans are standing behind the President. To bad your losing your real base and leaving behind the wacko's who will be the destroyers of a valuable and illustrious party. So you would want your President's children (the man who sits in the White House and can make deals with anyone) to have his children unprotected. Are foreigners going to come snatch your children, what power can you wield or decision you can make if someone has the ability to do something to your children. Yes mine are important to me but if mine are taken or dies it doesn't effect the whole world only mine. Your line of reasoning is not realistic and will not turn anyones head or mind around. Stop hating OBama
@ Watching......I simply stated a fact....yes he did bring his family with him to places that wanted to see his family values....since when does stating a fact mean that I hate someone.....the fact of the matter is exactly what i said....he is using the death of others to sell fear....and no there was no public out rage to ban weapons....the out rage was how could the POS get his hands on the weapons at all! It is a fact that his kids are guarded ....while yours are not.....legislating law abiding gun owners does not solve the problem....we should be demanding that our government be held accountable for not keeping the illegal guns and weapons out of the hands of those that will kill others....period
If every kid in America deserves armed guards like the president's kids, should all adults get secret service protection like the president?
According to the thinking of some on this board they would be shouting YES because they have no thought process past hating Obama. Hey San how about us demanding a SS agent and Limo be waiting outside our door to take us to our jobs in the morning. Don't you think we deserve it since our decisions effect the WHOLE WORLD. hahahhaha. Don't we feel important?
Ordinary adults don't need Secret Service protection, unless they live in New York or any of a few other liberal bastions, because most states allow law-abiding adults to carry concealed firearms. So unlike school kids, they can protect themselves if they are determined to do so. Of course it would help if Obama and his cronies wouldn't try to make it more difficult by heaping more restrictions on these folks' right to defend themselves. If he succeeds in banning firearms, then yes, we probably all would deserve to have our own personal Secret Service detail since the government would, in effect, be assuming responsibility for keeping each and every one of us safe.
Whenever soomeone doesn't agree with anothers opinion on here they are referred to as a "hater", "Whackos" or "crazies". Seems to me those calling the names have those same issues themselves. Want to save lives? Stop abortions, you can rationalize it all you want, not "legally" a person or whtever you want, but it is taking a life.
I am also against abortion and I have a brand new down syndrome granddaughter with a whole in the center of her heart that we knew about while her mother was carrying her and felt as if God had blessed us with this miracle. When asked if she wanted to terminate she said no and we are now holding and loving and praying that our beautiful baby survives. So my attitude toward abortion echo's my attitude toward those that wish to end lives once here. Oh and I also have weapons in my home just not assault weapons. So why not protect lives by eliminating guns like wo many of you want to eliminate the doctors that perform abortions including having them killed?
I'm glad you have a granddaughter, congrats. I hope she lives a long and prosperous life. I think in some cases abortion is warranted perhaps, like rape cases, or if the mother may die because of the pregnancy. Doesn't mean I like it. I have weapons too, and no assault type weapons. That being said I don't think I shouldn't be able to own one. Everyone that owns weapons should have a safe, keep them stored there unless using it. That nut job in Newton would not have gotten his hands on those weapons. Our country has not enforced gun laws on the books, we should have always enforced them. Responsible people should not be punished and have their rights traampled because scum run amuck. The scum should be trampled.
Folks,
Here is my plan to protect school kids from harm:
Give all kids and teachers RFID Security badges. Learn more here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio-frequency_identification
They need them to get into and out of the school. Install magnegic locks so that no one who doesn't have the RFID badge can walk into the school.
Done!
That really isn't a horrible idea. It would depend on how much it would cost to install the system and issue the badges.
Krik,
Amazon is already doing this, as well as thousands of other companies.
I know companies do this......I worked for a company that had it....and it made it easy to keep people from going to areas of the building that they didn't belong because you could set the access levels.
Not a bad idea + I think all students in public or private schools should wear school uniforms. I know, we have been down this road before but it makes sense. Anyone not sporting the cool uniforms would be easily spotted as suspicious.
All countries across the globe wear uniforms and their students, especially in Western countries consistently out score US students by a wide margin. Several years ago I was in New Zealand and the couple that we stayed with had two children. They could not wait to show us their uniform and their school that was drop dead beautiful and it was a public school.
The doors were locked at overlook. The nut case shot them out.
anna,
What is overlook? Time for beddy-bye!
The only problem with badges is they can be stolen. The sad fact is, if a loser gun owner wants to go in and kill someone he is going to do it whether it is one person or a dozen. There is no easy solution in this country in its current state.
Coopster also include the bullet proof windows with grids installed. Make an alarm sound if anyone breaches any opening doors or windows and have another set of doors that they have to go through to get in. Also put in camera's that can be monitored from the office which will see anyone coming into the area of the school, and a police officer riding around the paremeter of the school. In this way the protection is on the outside and unseen in hallways. not on the inside for the students to feel as if they are in a prison. Along with some bans of the assault rifles we have went a step further lowering the opportunity for this to happen.
This is sad. So we are going to send kids to school in fear or in defense of not getting shot instead of learning the three R's and C (computers)? Pathetic.
Well, if schools today are anything like the schools that I went to as a kid, you'd also need to surround them in barbed wire because there was not just one entry point. There were literally hundreds of places where someone could gain entrance to the campus.
Lets not forget Obama just enacted Secret Service protection for himself the rest of his life. How much will that cost us? Why should he have that after he leaves office? That "Priveledge" was tossed out a long time ago. I guess some are MORE PRIVELEDGED
its,
Another Repub idiot who doesn't understand that EVERY PRESIDENT gets this protection for life.
Moron!!!!
Actually a middle of the road democrat you twit. But you as with all your other comments on here you do nothing but assume. LOL, it was revoked in 1994, he just signed it back in, you're the moron
Libs don't let facts bother them...
Its,
You obviously haven't a CLUE about reality. Quit listening to Limbaugh and Fox and clue up here, if you dare!:
http://www.secretservice.gov/protection.shtml
It is people like "it's societies fault" that disable our country from moving forward. When is everyone going to see that this type of individual offers nothing yet we have a couple of hundred in congress just like him?
Aunt Anna,
I must admit I lean left on some things, right on others. I have voted for both parties for president, congress, senate too. I try to vote for who I think will do the best job. On here it does appear more "libs" are narrow minded. Heres a cut and paste of the presidents "ruling".
"As a cost savings, Congress had ended lifetime security details for former presidents, cutting off Secret Service protection 10 years after a president leaves office. But in the post-9/11 world Congress decided that former chief executives may still be vulnerable and need protection.
President Obama has now signed the repeal. HR. 6620, the “Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012,” also gives Secret Service protection to former First Ladies and guarantees agents will continue to shadow children of former Presidents until they become 16 years of age.
Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics.
Of course, families can decline protection. When President George Herbert Walker Bush walked away from the inaugural ceremonies of his successor Bill Clinton, his wife Barbara Bush said farewell to her agents on the Capitol steps, and moved back to Texas without them."
ISF. I wonder why?
Well Demon, you prove my point. Can you hold your breath and stomp your feet too? President Obama has now signed the repeal. HR. 6620, the “Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012,” also gives Secret Service protection to former First Ladies and guarantees agents will continue to shadow children of former Presidents until they become 16 years of age. NBC news.
Why is because he feels entitled. I think Bush has been hammered by more people than Obama. No one likes him. I think he would need it more.
One BIG difference. Bush is white.
Oh Coopster now there you go saying that OBama needs it more than Bush, Hint hint he does because even as they deny it the hatred for OBama is so much greater for less reasons than Bush. Shhh don't say it to loud because than people will be saying your calling them a raciest. Even if your not they will accuse you of it. Oh and by the way his children will be 16 and over when he leaves office so they won't have any coverage. Sorry you can take that off your whining table.
Well Coopster, People like me don't disable our country. I dare say you vote democrat all the time just because you don't like republicans. Thats how all you democrats AND republicans are. I vote both ways, I'm independent but lean a tad left. I vote for those who I think will be a steward of the people he represents. Our Congressman Foley, Washington State was a very good speaker of the house, a democrat, I voted for him every time. I voted for Clinton, I made a mistake voting for Carter.
So what if he's white? Should that matter?
It shouldn't matter and both you and I know it.
I would love to vote for a Republican but I have not met one that shares my liberal leaning views and my somewhat conservative fiscal views. I would have voted for Chuck Hagel when he was thinking of running for President had he won the nomination and I really like Collin Powell - both Moderate Republicans leaning left. Moderate Republicans are getting run out of the Republican party in droves. You will especially see it the 2014 elections. The Republican Party has huge problems and is not addressing them. Instead they kowtow to the NRA, Grover Norquist, Rush Limbaugh and that ilk and this gun ownership fight is just going to make it worse. You will see.
"One BIG difference. Bush is white."
Oh yeah, thanks for reminding us. You may have a point there; there is an awful lot of black-on-black crime in this country.
HILARIOUS!! His Highness doesn't hesitate to use his kids along with everyone elses in countless arguments and propoganda, however when an opposing viewpoint does it it's "repugnant". Case in point!!
By these statements Obama prove drives the NRA's point home in demonstrating his hypocrisy!!!!
No Dougie it's like you calling your kids little brats but you will be ready to bust someone especially a stranger in the mouth if they point to your kids and call them beasts. So he is not a hypocrite he is a father.
You all act like he is any different than you would be if you were the President of the United States. He is what every other president has been oops except he is just a slight bit darker. Sorry I had to throw that in just for the fun of it. Hatred finds its level even if it pretends like it isn't there.
Watchingfrombothsides, You're the only one bringing up color of skin, does that make you a hater?
When America reelected Barack Obama they voted for higher unemployment, lower incomes, record government spending, and a stagnant under-performing economy. Barack Obama promises to bring even more pain his second term.
In the US today:
12 million Americans remain unemployed.
In December 22.6 million Americans were unemployed or underemployed.
The average unemployed American is out of work for nearly 40 weeks.
Dougie and Anna,
You Puppet lost.
Get over it!!!
Yes, and the Republicans are offering nothing to help. It's the Republican's economy stupid. Why do you think Obama just shellacked the GOP? It's going to happen again in 2014!
Yo CD, you're another perfect demonstration of the liberal mentality that the 1st amendment somehow only applies to you and simply because your guy won the election whatever the mesiah says is gospel.
Interesting how none of you felt the need to shut the hell up when our guy was in office. Yet another example of liberal hypocrisy!! The hits keep coming.....
Dougie,
When a Republican wins the Presidency we can have this talk again. Given the extreme position the GOP has had in the last 4 years, I doubt that will happen, because the Tea Nuts have ruined your party. Get rid of them, and you might have a chance.
If not, the Dems will rule for years to come. Nuff said!
CD. SPOT ON. The Republican Party is toast and the NRA will seal the deal. We are seeing the Republican Party for what it is - a hate filled, offer nothing, obstructionist, revisionist, gun toting, fear mongering, and hysterical party.
Once JQ Public actually starts realizing their rights are slipping away, the economy isn't improving at the pace it should and prices for EVERYTHING are skyrocketing (even you must have noticed those grocery bills creeping up?), it'll be a shoe-in for the GOP. Dems can only ride the carrot of government bene's for so long before people get tired of being played....
Back to the point, if the Prez want to parade his kids around and use them as poster children for his position on EVERYTHING, in addition to not affording the public the same protection his kids get, then they're fair game for others to do the same.....
Sorry, he's President not King (although he'd LOVE to be the latter)
Coop,
You forgot anti-woman's rights, anti-gay, anti-health care, anti-medicare, anti-veterans benefits, anti social security, and more....
The GOP wants the rich to succeed, and for the poor to fail.
Same as it ever was.
Aunt Anna I guess you don't have a good job cause I just got a heck of a raise and my stock is doing absolutely fabulous. My Company just begin hiring to stay on top of all the manufacturing it is doing and oh my our bonuses were the best ever. So I guess in my selfish life is grand situation I love the Prez and so does all those people who started their new jobs this week at our Company. Oops forgot to tell you that they are also building some new offices and tanks to hold all the product we are producing. Sorry Obama has been good to my part of the economy.
JQ public already knows and we decided to back the black guy!!!!
Watcher, SO glad you're doing well, but there are MANY MANY others out there that wish the economy were doing better than limping along so they could have their shot at a job too.
Will things be so rosey when the stock tanks and you get your pink slip as the company can't afford to be taxed to death indefinately?!?
Watcher, stop playing both sides of the fence and realize who's REALLY looking out for the economy versus attempting to derail it!!
When we take the back the House and a larger majority in the Senate come 2014 we will finally be able to move the country forward without the obstructionists.
Coop,
Dream on, loser. The obstructionists are the GOP! Everyone with a brain stem knows this.
The American People don't watch FOX as much as YOU do!
Clue Up!!
Coop I already have my happy finger on the button, The House, The Senate and than the explosion of heads coming from the right without any help from us. THey will self implode mark my words. We survived Bush Bush and Bush but they can't handle two terms of Obama so who my friend is the strongest political force.
Wonder what will happen when Hillary or Biden take as they like to call it "The Self Proclaimed Throne". Long live the liberal dynasty. Sorry I just am such a happy person I was even okay when Bush BUsh and Bush were in cause I knew it was going to pass and I am a patient person waiting for our turn at the throne. Good Night don't let the republicans bite.
Hilarious CD, you're so damn rabid to disagree that you don't even recognize that Coopster is AGREEING with you!!
CD. Did you read my post?
Thank you Dougie.
Coopster I'm not so sure CD can read!
Give CD a break. She's probably an illiterate welfare queen who dropped out of school after the 5th grade. Typical Obama supporter.
hbebe, you live in a trailer right? Your favorite tv show is Honey Boo Boo? Yeah, typical republican.
Heh heh, you're about as far off as you can possibly be on that one. And I don't even know, or care, who the hell Honey Boo Boo is.
Self destruction is now occurring in the GOP,,
Congress will need to do their job in making sure people are safe
The NRA can says it's law, policies or business and money and whatever. And they walk away from it. But good people do what is morally right. David Keene and Wayne LaPierre will have to answer to GOD in hell one day.
Mental illness is genetics, environment, culture. Removing it is impossible as many babies are born every minute. The science is not there and never will be in our life time or scientists and doctors are GODs. But the bullet that comes at the end of a gun can be stopped tangibly. What you ask even GOD cannot do, why do you ask human to do when even GOD can't. David Keene is a MORON!!
To my American friends to the south:
The racism, intolerance, ignorance, hubris, and malice are rife in these posts. You're at war with yourselves and you don't see it. You fear your neighbors and strangers in the street. You are a product of your own design, and you're spiralling ever downward. If you really want to heal and move forward, you are going to have to start by listening to each other instead of hurling insults and come to a compromise.
Take a real look at the statistics, and the solutions and systems used by other countries. You don't have the worst death by firearm statistic in the world, but based on statistics from UNODC you're roughly in fifteenth place based on homicide alone and tenth if you include suicide. Should a suicidal individual be allowed to buy a gun? Makes a good case for at least imposing a mandatory background check and waiting period. In Canada for example, this is the case and the overall death by firearm is seven times less than that of the US. Now don't jump all over me, because Canada's major urban centers have the same problems as those in the states, and no system is perfect. If you restrict your comparisons to modern, fully "westernized" countries you'll find that the US is number one in death by firearm per capita.
One may argue that armed guards at every school might dissuade a potential threat. It's reasonable. It's also reasonable that the guards will be the first targets of a truly commited homicidal/suicidal individual.
So stop shouting at each other and find some middle ground. You can hold on to your constitutional right and arm everyone, and by the way the US is the only country in the world with right to bear arms in your constitution. However I won't vacation in the US - ever. Or you can make a few tweaks. (I know someone's itching to make a "we don't need your socialist dollars here, Mr Canukistan" - but the fact is you do. Big time)
As to the NRA's ad, does it really need discussion? Is there any world leader with a child going to school that doesn't get protection? Isn't it clear why that is required? With all the malice on this post alone it's quite clear to me.
Spot on Igloo Man, spot on.
Thanks Coop, that's been stewing a while...
Just out of curiosity I wonder how many actually looked at this add?
I would agree with this though if you see the add no one is saying they should be unprotected. Of course they should have protection.
That is not what the add does. It shows the hypocrisy of saying that we don't think armed guards are the answer while yet plenty of kids, including his are guarded in such schools.
The NRA will need to,reform itself to,the 21 century and lead or be left in the 1800's
Guess the saying "the truth hurts" is what is going on here. NRA makes a statement that is true and in my opinion the idiot in the white house is hurt by it. You can't stop violence by taking away rights of law abiding citizens. When is everyone who wants guns taken away going to learn this simple truth? Last month in my town Billings, MT a lady got po'd at her ex and ran him over with her car! Why don't we go to the legislature and white house and request that vehicles be banned and a background check at least for dui's or assaults and mental status. Fact is more kids will be killed in car wrecks this week than were people killed by guns last year put together. Make firearms illegal and I will be a criminal because as Charlton Heston said, "They can have my guns when they pry them from my cold dead fingers."
Hey Pete, with all due respect, you haven't done your research on traffic fatalities.
Lookup the traffic safety facts in 2010 there were 32,885 total fatalities...
Unless you meant car wrecks world wide...
Hey Igloo! I just read Pete's statement and don't see any numbers posted. I do like the fact that you did post some numbers from 2010.....so out of that total 32,885 fatalities how many were children? and while you are at it please look up the numbers for 2012 which would be just as relevant to the discussion.
Hi Krikit214, (2010 data is the latest published statistic I can find)
Pete Siegel wrote: "Fact is more kids will be killed in car wrecks this week than were people killed by guns last year put together."
This statement is simply not supported by the facts. In 2010 there were 31,672 gun deaths in the US and 32,885 total auto fatalities - kids 15 and under were 1428. If you want to get silly and follow Pete's math, he is suggesting that a little over 1.6 million kids will die on the roads in a year which is actually higher than the worldwide total annual traffic fatalities of about 1.2 million.
This speaks to a comment my earlier post. To soften a word I used previously (ignorance), many people write very well and come off like authorities on a particular subject. The fact is many people don't check the facts before voicing their well-intentioned opinions, and others will just parrot the misinformation with conviction. Ignorance begats more ignorance. With all due respect to Pete, I don't mean to suggest he is ignorant in general, but certainly ill-informed on this particular statistic.
I have been sick or I would have replied sooner. My statement above is intentionally for those that are willing to go look up the facts. Which obviously you guys have. Either way, how many times are you willing to have your rights trampled? In my view we are going from a republic country, no not the political party, to a socialist country. Ask a Russian how that worked for them. Before taking a right away we really need to stop and think about the men and women who have fought and keep in mind most those that died to keep us free. I think our founding fathers knew about inventions and were not being remiss when they penned the second ammendment. When the people are not allowed to keep the tools to keep themselves safe from their government then this country will no longer be the leader of the free world.
Gun measures will need to be rethought. The NRA,should be leading on smarter legeslation.
1. Without answering the question, you only complain about using these kids as political pawns.
I am not a member of the NRA, I do not own a gun, however, I would want my kids as well protected as the president's children, especially if he's coming up with the policies that would influence their safety.
2. How about everybody stop resorting to name calling and random outburst of rage at the opposing party? It's childish. If you want to make a point, then speak in a clear, calm manner.
3. I've never heard of the NRA threatening any citizen with violence. I have heard of the Black Panthers Organization threatening anybody at certain polling stations into voting for Obama, but never of NRA men walking around the polling stations with guns to force any citizen to vote anti-Obama.
4. I attend a highschool. My classmates are scared. They have talked to teachers about what would happen if we were attacked. Everybody gets on their moral high-horse and doesn't bother to actually ask students how they feel. A boy brought a cache of weapons to our school two years ago and the only thing that stopped him from ending the lives of an entire class was an off-duty police offer who happened to be on the premises.
5. Psychopathic gunmen don't attack armed places. As soon as they're confronted with resistance they surrender. Instead of going through the ardurous task of taking away all guns, followed by all knives, followed by all pencils, followed by whatever other dangerous object that these people can use, wouldn't it make sense to place an armed person on campus? Wouldn't that be more thorough and more efficient?
Before you call me a gun-nut, NRA supporter, biggot, etc. I've never owned a gun, never belonged to the NRA, I'm not even a Republican. I just believe that this is a mistake.
The Evangelical Republicans, can you please stand up against GUNS!!! What would Jesus do~~
hahaha are you serious?!!! where i am from he would say "Haleleuya! Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!"
Kristin you are such a troll.
Elitist? the NRA is elitist.
Finally our future, SSR, TX. Clear consise points. No name calling.
