So what's the problem with putting them in every school? Is it a cost issue? A practicality issue? It would be a big undertaking, for sure, but it could be done. If Obama's kids are worth the cost and effort, aren't other people's kids worth it too?

wbs, I am a cancer survivor. To me, all of this political posturing is so inconsequential. I don't see gun advocates as wanting anything but the status quo. They bring nothing to the table. Arm teachers? I'm sure all of the troubled kids will know the whereabouts of those guns at every moment. I see no need to demolish the 2nd amendment, however, the constitution is a framework for our laws. It is not the law.

I did not flipantly blow it off. There can be answers from both sides of this issue. The president did not blow of the idea of armed security in schools as many here are seeming to rant. You can bet that if a teacher has a gun, the students will know about it. Even the troubled ones. There is no perfect solution. I am truly sick of the "oh well, that's just the way it is" we need MORE guns attitude coming from most. I have no agenda. I drive a school bus. We have a sheriff on campus. Is that enough? Agreed - I don't care for the "more guns" will solve the problem either. A firearm in the hands of the inexperienced or untrained is not an improvement. But I don't see any evidence of gun bans working either. Personally, I don't oppose background checks....maybe rethink the design of our buildings with some safety and security considerations - some measures do seem common sense.

Any "assault weapons" ban has the first hurdle of defining that term. And once you put down a definition, it changes (technology only goes forward). When a new firearm is developed that no longer meets the technical definition, what good is the ban? Consider California banned .50 caliber rifles...shortly after a .460 was developed, which shoots further and is more accurate anyway (as I understand it).

In my state, their proposals intend to confiscate the firearms that would be banned (various pistols, rifles, shotguns..not just assault weapons) - and no compensation. How is that fair? It may not be the intent of the citizens who supported the measure, but it is the proposed outcome that is being leveraged with their support.....and I don't intend to let someone walk off with my property (a few of my pistols are quite expensive).

But part of the problem is also the failure to deal with the disturbed children you mention. In some of these cases, individuals who knew the perpetrator did not seem all that surprised.

Judging by the events at Newtown, Columbine, VA Tech, I'd say ordinary school kids are in just as much danger as Obama's daughters. Nobody has made an attempt on either of their lives. And if they were plain-clothes rather than in uniform, the attacker would not have an easy time identifying them.
