White House calls NRA 'repugnant,' 'cowardly' for invoking president's children in ad

 

The White House is hitting back at the National Rifle Association for its web video, which refers to President Obama's children.

"Most Americans agree that a president's children should not be used as pawns in a political fight," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. "But to go so far as to make the safety of the president's children the subject of an attack ad is repugnant and cowardly."

Here's the transcript of the NRA's ad:

"Are the president’s kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes. But he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids. And gun-free zones for ours.”

Let's think about this practically: if there is a chance that banning large capacity magazines or automatic weapons will save one life, isn't it worth doing? Do hunters need automatic weapons? Does a properly trained gun owner need more than 10 bullets to disable an assailant?

What's the real harm of taking a step that could save someone's life?

What if our weapons had been taken away from us when the British came.? I don't think we would be having any of these conversations.

I guess our second amendment or our rights in general mean nothing to you. The second amendment doesn't state what weapons we can and cannot have or how many.

Laws are only obeyed by law abiding citizens, not criminals. This is why we call them criminals...

I had a license to kill people I didn't even know, but now that I am an ordinary citizen you and others wish to take away my right to own a gun to protect my family and others. This year it's that weapon, next year it will be another, and another, etc., until we will no longer be able to protect ourselves and that includes against our very own government.

We should have as much if not more power then that can be used against us.

              I am a law abiding citizen and I own guns. Am I a member of NRA? Absolutely. Just like I'm a member of several other clubs that support my interests, like my dog clubs.

              Do I believe in gun control? Yes. What I don't believe in is a President acting like a King and enacting legislation that is against the constitution and tramples on the rights of US citizens.

              Timothy McVeigh killed over 160 people and injured 800 more with FERTILIZER and a truck. Terrorists killed 3,000 people and injure over 2,900 people with hijacked AIRPLANES.

              The executive orders will not cut down on gun violence. Look at the common factor in the mass shootings - psychiatric issues.

              With the struggle over a budget, where is the funding for all of these measures going to come from?

                                          I am not a gun owner, but I am strongly for protecting the "Bill of Rights". Now while all you people screaming for a ban on these guns are getting your way, just remember this: The FBI, Border Patrol, State Police, Sheriff Dept, and lets not forget about the worse of them, "Private Security Contractors"(you know the one that killed over a hundred "unarmed" citizens in New Orleans after the disaster there), are able to have as many of these weapons as they want. And who are they going to use them on! "US Citizens".

                                          People need to wake the hell up in this country, why are only the gun stories suddenly making the news. Why are the shootings from schools being air every five minutes all day long for months at a time. The media is as guilty for these shootings , as the shooters are, they are giving these nut cases a stage to preform on and they know it, why because of ratings for their shows(PROFIT in other words). The media doesn't care one dam bit about the value of a human life, if they did, they would have pulled the red carpet they rolled out for these nut cases from under their feet, and stop airing it this way. They are only encouraging the other nuts to go out and claim their five minutes of fame by doing the same thing!

                                          No gun law is going to work to stop a criminal because they don't care if they break the laws to being with.

                                          Want to fix the gun violence in the country? Then try fixing the real problems.

                                          1) Stop letting violent offenders out of prison for good behavior, or work release programs. What good is it to sentence someone to life in prison, and let them out in 7 years(did their victim die for only 7 years?)

                                          2) Start enforcing the laws that are on the books now, instead of saying we(the state police, probation dept) don't have time for that stuff, or we have more important things to do.

                                          3) Stop putting our kids on drugs that not safe for them. ADHA is not a decease, it was thought up by the drug companies to sell drugs for profit. Riddling, Prozac, and other drugs like this have been BAN by almost every other country in the world. Studies by every country in Europe have concluded that these drugs cause kids to commit suicide, or become so mind altered that they will try to kill people they know out of fear that they are trying to harm them. The studies also found that kids put on these drug suffer life long organ damage, have their growth stunned(that includes the growth and development of the brain), and are 82% more likely to become addicted to cocaine or heroine.

                                          I feel like I am living in s Germany to be in this country now, with the Patriot Act, and now gun control.

                                          You can be put on a domestic terrorist list for checking out the wrong book from the library, or visiting the wrong site on the web, or like me, commenting on news vine against what the government is doing.

                                          NO WARRANT NEEDED TO:

                                          1) tap your phone(home and cell), as well as get all phone records and usage logs

                                          2) search your home, office, car, public and private records(financial, medical, banking, etc.)

                                          3) can detain you without charges, or legal representation, and do not have to tell you what you are being held for, or even tell your family they are holding you.

                                          4) They can ban you from being able to fly on any flight(inside or out of country)

                                          5) Place a gag order you(or anyone they request information from about you) to prevent you from protecting your rights.

                                          These are just a few things they are doing to "make us safer". Feeling safe yet?

                                          A true mad man once said: "To truly control a nation, one must first disarm its citizens". It was Hitler in 1936, and he did it under the guise of "providing safety for the people". Worked out well for the people of Germany, didn't it!

                                          When the government is the only one with weapons, it no longer has any reason to listen to its citizens.

                                          When people give up their rights out of fear, they deserve no rights at all. If you want to be free and safe, stand up and fight for every right you have, while you still have them. Once they are gone, you will never get them back. and it means someone else owns you! Slavery is only a thing of the past, as long as we are smart enough to learn from it, instead of doom to relive it.

It is in black and white print, and the UCLA have been fighting it from day one, because it directly violates our "Bill of Rights".                                                 The only people who are mad about the President making these proposals are:

                                                1) The gun manufacturers- They want teachers armed so they can sell more guns. The next move would be to get cities and counties to actually have a budget for weapons so they can mark up the guns even more. Sooner or later some crazy or pissed off teach shoots a student, then they will propose we arm the kids too!

                                                2) The NRA- They get millions from gun manufacturers each year. They used to be an honorable organization focused on teaching gun safety and techniques. Now they are a money hungry lobby just like most lobbies.

                                                3) The crazies- They have been saying the government is coming since the Civil War ( when the government actually came and kicked their butts all the way back to Florida ) These people call running through the woods pretending they are Special Forces, a great weekend.

                                                4) The racists- If Obama passed got the Repubilcans to pass a law saying all racists are to recieve a billion dollars from the government as a peace offering, they would complain about it. No matter what he does, they will hate him. News flash! The rest of America doesn't care if you're racists or not. We will respect your right to complain and some of us will even defend your right to complain. But we will not sit idly by and let you dominate the dialogue about where we as a nation are going and how we will get there. As we used to say in the military. Either lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. We are NOT going back to the 30's 40's and 50's. Get over it. Or don't get over it. We really don't give a damn.

                                                  Considering the broad approach so far being suggested as solutions to gun violence, a more fruitful one might be one that all Democrats are banned from purchasing firearms. Any demographic study will show that the preponderance of gun violence is centered in heavily Democratic areas (e.g.: Chicago, Detroit, etc.). If Democrats are banned from all gun purchases it seems highly likely that the bulk of gun deaths a year would be markedly reduced.

                                                  This common sense measure should be instituted immediately and would certainly be much more effective than assault rifle or large capacity magazine bans presently being proposed.

                                                    When the Supreme Court ruled favorably on the 2nd Amendment rights of individuals to keep and bear arms, thus swatting down a 28 year gun ban in the city of Chicago, Justice Clarence Thomas supported the majority opinion with a fascinating look at Civil War Reconstruction Era and the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. As Glenn Reynolds atInstapundit points out;

                                                    Very interesting to see both the majority and Justice Thomas reference the racist roots of gun control so strongly.

                                                    Thomas' opinion stresses that the amendment that freed the slaves provides the legal buttress for the individual's right to bear arms through Section 1 of the 14th Amendment's known as the "Privileges and Immunities Clause." Here are some selected highlights in the black justice's history lesson:

                                                    After the Civil War, Southern anxiety about an uprising among the newly freed slaves peaked. As Representative Thaddeus Stevens is reported to have said, “[w]hen it was first proposed to free the slaves, and arm the blacks, did not half the nation tremble? The prim conservatives, the snobs, and the male waiting-maids in Congress, were in hysterics.” ...

                                                    As the Court explains, this fear led to “systematic efforts” in the “old Confederacy” to disarm the more than 180,000 freedmen who had served in the Union Army, as well as other free blacks. ... Some States formally prohibited blacks from possessing firearms. ... Others enacted legislation prohibiting blacks from carrying firearms without a license, a restriction not imposed on whites. ... Additionally, “[t]hroughout the South, armed parties, often consisting of ex-Confederate soldiers serving in the state militias, forcibly took firearms from newly freed slaves.” ...

                                                    As the Court makes crystal clear, if the Fourteenth Amendment “had outlawed only those laws that discriminate on the basis of race or previous condition of servitude, African-Americans in the South would likely have remained vulnerable to attack by many of their worst abusers: the state militia and state peace officers.” ... In the years following the Civil War, a law banning firearm possession outright “would have been nondiscriminatory only in the formal sense,” for it would have “left fire-arms in the hands of the militia and local peace officers.” ...

                                                    One way in which the Federal Government responded was to issue military orders countermanding Southern arms legislation. ... [A] Jan. 17, 1866, order from Major General D. E. Sickles, ... [read] “The constitutional rights of all loyal and well-disposed inhabitants to bear arms will not be infringed”. The significance of these steps was not lost on those they were designed to protect. After one such order was issued, The Christian Recorder, published by the African Methodist Episcopal Church,published the following editorial:

                                                    “‘We have several times alluded to the fact that the Constitution of the United States, guaranties to every citizen the right to keep and bear arms. . . . All men, without the distinction of color, have the right to keep arms to defend their homes, families, or themselves.’

                                                    “We are glad to learn that [the] Commissioner for this State . . . has given freedmen to understand that they have as good a right to keep fire arms as any other citizens. The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land, and we will be governed by that at present.” Right to Bear Arms, Christian Recorder (Phila.), Feb. 24, 1866, pp. 29–30.

                                                    Thus began the movement to draft and ratify the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. Section 1 of the amendment assures all citizens equal rights and prohibits the States from abridging the privileges granted.

                                                    All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

                                                    Over the next hundred years, black Americans struggled mightily for equal footing until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's brought about a new direction for minorities. The renowned leader of that movement was, of course, Martin Luther King, Jr. but the movement was supported by many black organizations. Dymphna at Gates of Vienna remembers the Deacons for Defense and Justice.

                                                    The Deacons for Defense and Justice, a group of blacks in the South who believed in armed self-defense against an entrenched hatred that often led to killings of innocent black people, particularly black men.

                                                    The myth of Martin Luther King’s touted “non-violence” as a way to bring about justice steadfastly ignores the reality of King’s armed body guards and the arsenal of weapons kept in his home - kept there illegally, by the way. Dr. King couldn’t get a gun permit.

                                                    Given the times, King’s public image as the American Gandhi was probably good strategy; it reassured the fearful white majority and no doubt prevented much bloodshed. However, the armed “Deacons of Defense” were as vital and necessary a part of the struggle as was Dr. King’s approach.

                                                    An isolated farm surrounded by the sudden arrival of truckloads of hatred in the middle of the night could change the equation instantly with the judicious application of one shot over the heads of those hate-mongers. It didn’t solve the problem instantly, but it allowed enough time for the troublemakers to sober up. One armed black farmer lived to plow another day.

                                                    This part of black history has been neglected; I hope that the coming generations will pay the respect of close attention due these men.

                                                    Now we know that King's "non-violence" was a necessary charade. So also was the myth that M.L. King was "Moses" leading the flock. For example it was not MLK's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) that launched the "Freedom Rides" in 1961; it was the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) that did the organizing. Acceptance of King and his policy was also not universal.

                                                    Privately, King's supporters knew that non-violence was not an outlook everyone shared, and [aide Wyatt] Walker amused King by telling him of how one black Virginian had responded to a white bus driver who wanted him to enter his bus by the back door. A massive figure, the man had picked up the driver with one hand and said bluntly: 'Know two things. I can break your neck, and I ain't one of Martin Luther King's non-violent Negroes.' [Ed. note: It is hard to believe "Negroes" was the word used when this tale was told in the '60s. This is almost certainly BBC political correctness.]

                                                    The armed Deacons for Defense had 21 organizations scattered throughout the South keeping KKK counter-insurgency at bay. In 1966, King was challenged by a militant Malcom X and the "Block Power" movement.

                                                    Liberals will argue that M.L. King's leadership and nonviolence was the reason for the success of the Civil Rights Movement. They will point out that ready access to guns resulted in Rev. King's assassination in Memphis by a racist white man. That argument aside, it is clear in retrospect that without access to firearms by blacks, the establishment of racial equality in the 1960s would most likely have failed.

                                                        The NRA is a prime example of why you can't fix stupid. I just wish for once in their miserable lives, the NRA could actually help with solutions to help control violence with regards to firearms and help this country take guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. Oh and before you start hammering me, I own 2 firearms for home protection and both of them are shotguns. I used to be an NRA member but I learned after years of watching who and what they support, its all about money and payoffs to them by gun companies to keep the status quo. Truly this is not about the 2nd amendment, its about the money that their major supporters give them to support their bottom line.

                                                        The NRA is not normally my fav group, yet here what they brought up about the President's kids makes a ton of sense since they are no more precious than any other

                                                          Ummm this has been going on for how long?? This has nothing to do with his kids and the NRA crossed the line. It is NOT a choice for the SS to protect the first family's children. No they're not more precious, it goes with the job!

                                                          It seems to me that Bush's kids were protected by armed secret service guards - as were every president's kids before him as well. So why the attack on Obama's kids?? I feel there is no place for assault weapons in the hands of anyone other than the military. You don't need a 100 bullet clip to kill a deer... and if you do - get another hobby!
