VIDEO: First Read Minute: Taking a look back at the last four years

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro take a look back at President Obama's promises kept and promises broken in his first term.

Discuss this post

Hope no one is offended if I chose to look FORWARD to the next 4 years...

I'm not in the mood to assist in stirring the pot of nontroversy!

You can nitpick from now until Sunday, it doesn't change the FACT despite the historic opposition from the right, President Obama has kept many of his promises.

Who knows, maybe if he had given out more "back rubs" to the righties & soothed their hurt fee-fee's he might of gotten more done...

Well, let's see:

* President successfully changes Healthcare in the Country - GOP, not only apposed, but yet to provide the "Replace" part of 'Repeal and Replace'

* President dealing with a -9% GDP contraction coming into office - GOP acting appalled President didn't 'fix' it my March 10th, 2009

*Cool White House - crazy Congress

* 51/51 President - Allen West..how's the FL sun treating you

*President weeps at death of 26 innocent - NRA develops assault rifle apps for kids to play while bemoaning violence in video games

Yeah..I'm pretty certain, the correct man has been in the White House the last 4 years.

And for the record, make the correct distinction between what a President attempts to get done, but needs the Congress vs. what a President can do only within the Executive Branch.

IMO, too often he is being judged as a 'promise breaker' because of the outcome. Last I checked, we do live a place that needs the President AND Congress to act for most things. What the President attempted to get done vs. what was able to actually get done are completely different. Judge his 'promises' by the effort he attempted something with, not whether or not the outcome came to pass. To only judge him by the latter, is to disrespect our way governing (that is when the Congress chooses to govern)

so cool you left out downgrades and slain ambassadors too. oh well, maybe the next push could be for removal of the 22nd, 1st, 2nd and 3rd amendments. just for starters.

Last 4 years have been great. the minority repubs has destroyed everything and majority democrats including the peace prize genius prez have been rendered powerless...good times indeed

Amen, Feisty. Seems to me that the things the President could do on his own are the promises he kept and the things that required cooperation from Congress and the GOP are where he encountered difficulties. The GOP obstructionists put their agenda ahead of the country.

Steeler Fan,

Like your comment on FT's this whole "the President needs to play nicey with the righties" meme is appalling!

If one of these so called "journalists" had an ounce of integrity, they would point out, John Boehner hasn't attended ONE state dinner out of 6

Upon being elected, the President set up weekly cocktail parties at the WH... guess what? The minority party refused to attend.

I would like to know exactly what MORE the President should do, to quite the chattering class???

And lastly, he held a Super Bowl party which again NO ONE showed up to!

They need to save the false equivalency for someone dumb enough to buy it...

Don't believe me?? just ask a young person... the vast majority will tell you the "government owes them" an education, housing, job, food, retirement, etc.

Thanks for fundamentally transforming this population into one that can't think for itself or survive with a government handout!!

You are correct sir, they have not been good times. They have been all too real, full of pain, loss, despair, confusion, waning hope...but yet for so many in this Country, this President has an ability to bring something better to the surface. In the midst of so much hatred and ridiculousness, he still, daily chooses to be the President to all of this Country's citizens. We all have different value systems, but especially in this environment, that daily choice he makes means something to me, and I greatly appreciate him for it.

Amazing president. Barack Obama wanted to bring bi-partisanship to the nation's capitol, but the right wingers are too stuck in the 18th/19h Century to ever be able to accomplish this goal. They are dictating to our United States Congress, both the Senate and House. The media on the whole as well are pretty happy to keep things divided in DC.

Even so, he will go down as one of our greatest presidents. A huge mountain we as a nation had to climb after the past 30 years of most everybody just looking the other way. As a consequence, someone had to pay the bills. Someone had to pay the price for the incompetence, irresponsibility, propaganda and greed we saw right before our eyes throughout the years.

Barack Obama was that someone.

He has faced it all head on with humor, dignity and tenacity. Both here in America and around the world.

We are fortunate. He is a tremendous role model.

The debt ceiling was raised 7 times under GW Bush, once going on twice under Obama. It's been raised DOZENS of times since the Eisenhower Administration. Is that how you want to keep score?

Of course it is, because you don't have anything real to point to as a failure. Now run along and let Uncle Glenn tell you some more fairytales about the Weimar Republic.

The role of raising the debt ceiling is an act of the Congress and one that it seemingly had no problem doing for decades and decades. The Rating's agency squarely pointed their regards towards the Congress.

With your 'point in time' argument about President Bush and downgrades. I'll take the President that ended the 2 longest and most expensive wars (in lives and treasure) during their tenure, than be the President who only seemed good at starting them.

      Hail Caesar Augustus,

GW Bush did all he could to get rid of the 1st Amendment. I don't see anyone talking about the 3rd Amendment. Why would I want a soldier in my house unless he is an invited guest or a relative? No one would but that is not an issue we are even close to discussing so, so much for Amendment 3. As for 22nd Amendment I don't believe anyone has been talking about giving Obama more than 2 terms. And as for the 2nd Amendment we are seeing talk of responsible, legislation to limit the kind of guns and ammo one can have. You can still have a regular hunting rifle, one shot at a time, shot gun or pistol.

Listening to hate mongers and talking heads giving you radical talking points will put hair on the palms of your hand.

how generous of you and Obama.

GW Bush did all he could to get rid of the 1st Amendment.

how so I would love to hear it. As far as I am concerned Bush is Obama and vice versa.

As for 22nd Amendment I don't believe anyone has been talking about giving Obama more than 2 terms.

never said that, just pointing out when do you stop trampling the constitution for party agenda. Adler I know your answer(s). 1) Repubs did it or 2) but but but its different this time

      Listening to hate mongers

supporting the 2nd amendment makes me a hate monger. Is this more liberal 'tolerance'? That is the major problem with progressive liberalism, screaming how tolerant you as long as the view and stance is shared. anything short of that is outside the realm of liberal 'tolerance'. empty rhetoric nothing more. So speak of hate, look no further than your mirror and your FR idols.

For the umpteenth time we don't blame GW Bush.

We blame ALL REPUBLICANS back to Reagan...from stagnation of middle class wages to inflation of the national debt, the rise of outlaws within the GOP to the fall of fiscal sanity at the assault from trickle down economics and rampant deregulation, a new generation of John Birchers and rabid nationalists to a damaging trade imbalance with China it all started then and has grown like a cancer since.

You know that, because it's pointed out here every single day...you just can't figure out how to defend your empty talking point that comes from the wordsmithing of Frank Luntz and his like.

Even Reagan the traitor wasn't as bad as Bush and while Reagan failed as president the country rebounded well with Bill Clinton and would with Obama if it wasn't for the obstruction of the tea bags in congress. Good morning liberal Obama sock puppets!

I really get a kick reading the opinions of the liberals on this site, which is nothing more than a liberal media site to reflect the great forward movements of the Great Leader. By posting your claims here, do you really feel you make a difference? In reality it's nothing more than an entertainment site for laughs.

The red-headed sock puppet always seems to direct the digaloue from the first post forward, and she should since she is a talking head for the Great Leader. Seeking Sanity, are they one and the same, continues to illustrate she hasn't found sanity yet. Her only outlet in life appears to provide negative comments on the intelligence of anyone she disagrees with.

But they all believe in the Progressive lifestyle, using other peoples money to pay for the goods and services of others. And isn't this continued agenda of the Great Leader, divide the masses to complete the ultimate objective to distroy the nation from within?

Please continue your ranting negative opinions sock puppets, you are good for a laugh after working hard every evening in the course of protecting you rights under the Constitution you seem to dislike.

Oh Caesar, I just love the negative responses from the left-wing sock puppets!

You're correct, it only takes six responses to bring out the loonies from their closets. Tomas cfondemns the Republicans for this creation of spending. He fails to realize the President, House and Senate, that Barry controlled for all of the various bailouts, money to green energy companies who also failed as he did, the car companies and the various financial services industry companies. I still find it amazing how a union could gain value for no investment, over the investments of the stockholders and bond holders.

Layton, however, believes I am jealous of Feisty and the Insane one Seeking Sanity. I love to bait those losers to hear their negative discourse. Yep, that Duke education is really paying off for the insane one.

John believes I need metal health because I don't agree with his logic, while Steeler Fan suggests I broaden my horizons elsewhere.

But I do love the original and short statement from Smitty - "put a sock in it".

All old, stale and grey comments from the peanut gallery. If I knew a way to post pics on this site, I would include newday sitting at a table with her granny shoes on, along with the other old, stale and grey folks at their baseball game. When I found the pics on the web, I almost peed my pants laughing so hard.

So her are the old, stale and grey Obama sock puppets being critical of others.

Hey Tomas, review the spending from Obama during his short time in office in relation to the other presidents? You really believe the problem is from Bush? How about from Barry and those before him and Bush? Go back about 90 years and review the numbers, and the greatest increases in spending from each president. You liberals do well in the spending category.

But then again, it's not your money that's being spent, right?

I like the negative responses too. i ususally get called a pvssy..Tomas isnt quite sure what a well regulated militia is (probably thinks the EPA should be involved). Seeking went to Duke and I won a Fields medal for work in black hole entropy stupid. Layton hates gun owners but loves a balanced and fair gun regulation. @!$%#ty wears a helmet and John boy thinks Obama turns water into wine. They hate religion yet act like followers of Thula Doom when it comes to Obama

              Caesar,

How said it must be to prove daily that you know little to nothing about the posters here.

Layton hates gun owners but loves a balanced and fair gun regulation

You know NOTHING about me. So while you love to shoot the sh*t with unfunny and joke about how much fun you have riling up the other posters, I find it so ironic that the two of you spout your great careers and lives and yet post on pretty much every single article on a daily basis, including those not on FR.

You're right layton, no one knows about you, just what hate you preach in your posts.

There is nothing wrong in having an opinion that is different than mine. I can accept your view as yours, but I often don't agree with you. But I am not calling you names as kids in the school yard do.

Libbies must just like to hate everyone other than libbies Caesar.

I wonder, does MSNBC use this forum as a tool to inform Obama on how the world loves and supports him in his efforts to move forward?

i humbly apologize, I leave that to you and your smug arrogant crew.

I find it so ironic that the two of you spout your great careers

good now you can prove how vast your knowledge is in other posters. What is my career again? Please Nostradomus share with us all what quatrain this knowledge was revealed. Lameton my mere presence and differing opinion is enough to rile you up. I do it daily. Go back to your crappy post yesterday about how gun owners are insane and in the same breathe call for 'fair and balanced' approach to gun legislation. At least do try to veil hypocrisy

1funny Libbies live in a self loathing world. In one hand they proclaim their tolerance for all life and in the next display some of the most vile behavior from a human being simply because your beliefs differ. the FR libsRus crew share the same characteristics to another 'circle' of friends from the past. Just wondering if the LibsRus/DDI guys dress in white robes as well?

I'm not speaking for all. (I haven't been elected to anything since high school.) For you and your little brain to group everything speaks volumes about your ability to see anything outside of the "box." I loath none. I pity none. I do see that you, sir, have nothing better to do than post your diatribes on a daily basis.

Obama feeds us that line: "I inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression!" Says who? The 70's were MUCH worse than this the media says. Reagan fixed that economy in his first term. Obama has no legitimate excuse for his failure with the economy. He got every tool he asked for but he couldn't get the job done.

Just in - Unemployment from last month up in 44 out of 50 states . Enough said
