Schumer to support Hagel

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who is seen as a key to Chuck Hagel's becoming Defense secretary, is throwing his support behind the former Nebraska Republican senator -- despite past controversial statements on Israel, Iran, and the "Jewish lobby."

"Based on several key assurances provided by Senator Hagel, I am currently prepared to vote for his confirmation," Schumer said in a statement. "I encourage my Senate colleagues who have shared my previous concerns to also support him."

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) speaks during a news conference where it was announced that free Wi-Fi will be provided by Google to the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea on January 8, 2013 in New York City.

He added, "I know some will question whether Senator Hagel's assurances are merely attempts to quiet critics as he seeks confirmation to this critical post. But I don't think so. Senator Hagel realizes the situation in the Middle East has changed, with Israel in a dramatically more endangered position than it was even five years ago. His views are genuine, and reflect this new reality. ... In general, I believe any President deserves latitude in selecting his own advisors. While the Senate confirmation process must be allowed to run its course, it is my hope that Senator Hagel's thorough explanations will remove any lingering controversy regarding his nomination."

With Schumer's support, Hagel is seen as a likely shoo-in to win confirmation.

Full statement from Schumer's office:

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer released the following statement Tuesday regarding the nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel’s nomination for Secretary of Defense:

When Senator Hagel’s name first surfaced as a potential nominee for Secretary of Defense, I had genuine concerns over certain aspects of his record on Israel and Iran. Once the President made his choice, however, I agreed to keep these reservations private until I had the opportunity to discuss them fully with Senator Hagel in person.

In a meeting Monday, Senator Hagel spent approximately 90 minutes addressing my concerns one by one. It was a very constructive session. Senator Hagel could not have been more forthcoming and sincere.

Based on several key assurances provided by Senator Hagel, I am currently prepared to vote for his confirmation. I encourage my Senate colleagues who have shared my previous concerns to also support him.

In our meeting Monday, Senator Hagel clarified a number of his past statements and positions and elaborated on several others.

On Iran, Senator Hagel rejected a strategy of containment and expressed the need to keep all options on the table in confronting that country. But he didn’t stop there. In our conversation, Senator Hagel made a crystal-clear promise that he would do “whatever it takes” to stop Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, including the use of military force. He said his “top priority” as Secretary of Defense would be the planning of military contingencies related to Iran. He added that he has already received a briefing from the Pentagon on this topic.

In terms of sanctions, past statements by Senator Hagel sowed concerns that he considered unilateral sanctions against Iran to be ineffective. In our meeting, however, Senator Hagel clarified that he ‘completely’ supports President Obama’s current sanctions against Iran. He added that further unilateral sanctions against Iran could be effective and necessary.

On Hezbollah, Senator Hagel stressed that—notwithstanding any letters he refused to sign in the past—he has always considered the group to be a terrorist organization.

On Hamas, I asked Senator Hagel about a letter he signed in March 2009 urging President Obama to open direct talks with that group’s leaders.

In response, Senator Hagel assured me that he today believes there should be no negotiations with Hamas, Hezbollah or any other terrorist group until they renounce violence and recognize Israel’s right to exist.

Senator Hagel volunteered that he has always supported Israel’s right to retaliate militarily in the face of terrorist attacks by Hezbollah or Hamas. He understood the predicament Israel is in when terrorist groups hide rocket launchers among civilian populations and stage attacks from there. He supported Israel’s right to defend herself even in those difficult circumstances.

In keeping with our promises to help equip Israel, Senator Hagel pledged to work towards the on-time delivery of the F-35 joint strike fighters to Israel, continue the cooperation between Israel and the U.S. on Iron Dome, and recommend to the President that we refuse to join in any NATO exercises if Turkey should continue to insist on excluding Israel from them.  Senator Hagel believes Israel must maintain its Qualitative Military Edge.

Regarding his unfortunate use of the term “Jewish lobby” to refer to certain pro-Israel groups, Senator Hagel understands the sensitivity around such a loaded term and regrets saying it.

I know some will question whether Senator Hagel’s assurances are merely attempts to quiet critics as he seeks confirmation to this critical post. But I don’t think so. Senator Hagel realizes the situation in the Middle East has changed, with Israel in a dramatically more endangered position than it was even five years ago. His views are genuine, and reflect this new reality.

On issues related to female and LGBT service members, Senator Hagel provided key assurances as well. He said he is committed to implementing the Shaheen amendment to improve the reproductive health of military women. He also supports the full repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

In general, I believe any President deserves latitude in selecting his own advisors. While the Senate confirmation process must be allowed to run its course, it is my hope that Senator Hagel’s thorough explanations will remove any lingering controversy regarding his nomination.

I often wonder why the Congress must approve who the President wants on HIS cabinet. After all, they are HIS reps for the various departments of HIS administration.

I am fully in agreement with his picks having to undergo a check by Justice to make sure there are no criminal situations or scandals which could effect the nomination and a check by IRS to make sure they are up to date with their taxes. If they pass that, then it's a go for the President to make the appointment. After all, they are a direct reflection of his management and if they do a bad job, he can just fire them.

Putting the nominee up before the Congress for a political game to be played is just stupid and a slap to the peoples face when we have to go years without a person in the position because political bickering and partisanship got into the fray.

Schumer is part of the "Jewish" lobby that Hagel has pointed to that warps our foriegn policies. Why is it that we have to toe the line on everything concerning Isreal? I remember quite clearly the Jonathan Pollard spying episode and the attack on the U.S.S. Liberty which resulted in the deaths of 34 sailors. I am so tired of Jewish concerns affecting our national debate especially this last election cycle when Neytanyahu interjected Isreali politics into the national debates. What is good for the U.S. should be first and foremost in our policy making decisions, not what is good for some foriegn state.

Amazing how "If you are a Democrat (or RINO in Hagel's case), your prior words mean NOTHING"

This is the party of Kennedy ( Mary Jo DIED), Byrd (ex-Klan leader), and Clinton (I did not have SEX with that woman)..........

But you just watch how they will DESTROY any Republican regardless of the circumstance

Chucky Cheese Schumer is just another of the growing Democrat Caucus of Self-Defecating Jews in Washington....Along with Jacob Lew, Debbie Wasserman-( I married a German Nationalist )-Shultz, et al....They could care less about this Administration backstabbing Israel.....At least Ed Koch finally had his fill of P.0bama BS....

"Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch believes President Barack Obama’s
decision to nominate former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense
will damage relations between the United States and Israel, while emboldening
Islamists, and amounts to reneging on support for the Jewish state.....

Koch, a Democrat who has been one of Obama’s staunchest supporters, said
he’d thought all along that Obama would “renege on what he conveyed on his
    support of Israel,”

However, Koch said, Hagel’s nomination means Obama is turning his back on
Israel a little sooner than he thought he would.

“It’s very disappointing, I believe he will ultimately regret it,” Koch
said, “It undoubtedly will reduce support for him in the Jewish community, but I
don’t think he [the President] worries about that now that the election is
    over.”

Thank you Chuck Schumer. What Chuck Hagel said about the Jewish Lobby was right. All Lobbying should be outlawed. No one should be able to bribe our congress people. NO ONE. That Includes Unions also. The Only people Congress should be beholding to is the People that elected them. When there is a vote, there first priority should be there own people, then what is best for the Country. I am willing to bet the two are so tightly wound that voting for either will be ok. What is good for Big Business is never what is right for America. If a company wants to do business here, they have to do there job also. They can't pollute the air, water and land, as well as keep noise down. That is just the right thing to do. They can still make a great profit, but they must do the right thing. As it is now they just get there lobby to bribe the right people and they get away with what ever they want. We are better then that. We are better then to let Bushmaster keep selling the Man killer weapons that can hold up to 30 rounds at a time. We have to stop company's from making things that we know kill people, I mean from soft drinks to Assault weapons. Auto's to Nuts. Our Drug Company's need to make Med's that Cure us, Not just string us along. All we hear today is we can't afford our Health care and Insurance. Well they are all to blame. They know how to Cure all of our big money illnesses. There is no money in the Cure. So where do we go to get Health Care Cost under control? government take over of Drug company's and Cure people. We all know what I am talking about.

Schumer just underwent Obama's three step program.

    1. Try the con job to get the subject to agree.
    2. If the con job fails, next is intimidation and threats.
    3. If that too fails, then bribery.

This approach has proven very effective for Obama for passing Obamacare and other measures. It's called "The Chicago Three Step".

Cry me a river willy. Hagel went to meet with Schumer and made his own case. Chuck Schumer is his own man, He took Chuck Hagels word that was twisted around anyway. Just because a man can't be bribed by a lobby, even if its the Jewish lobby, well in my book, that is a good thing. Hagel has never voted in anyway to harm Israel. Not once. But He has also told them that they can't always get there way. No one gets everything they want. Again, that's a good thing. GO Chuck's ...

God for bid someone should tell the Jews they could so things different if they ever want peace. Bee Bee is a war monger, But he will start the war and expect the US to fight it for them. Well I say BS to that. I have no problem supporting and helping defend her, but if they are just going to keep starting trouble and have no desire for peace, then I say to hell with them. Peace takes work and give and take. As always the Jewish state just takes. No where in the world does it work like that.

Israel is the Brain, the US is the Body. The brain gives the body orders on what to do. This is not limited to the Middle East, but how we conduct our affairs all over the world and our internal politics. That is why it should be no surprise that Hagel had to appease Schumer. Why is someone who is placing America's interests first appeasing to someone who is placing Israel's interests first, for a position in the cabinet of the AMERICAN president. That tells you all you need to know about who runs the show.

    Okeeboy

I often wonder why the Congress must approve who the President wants on HIS cabinet. After all, they are HIS reps for the various departments of HIS administration.

The founders didn't trust a chief executive to necessarily be honest. Too much power was not a good thing. They had just overthrown the government of their king and weren't likely to trust someone with regal ambitions who would appoint people who would do dastardly things that would ultimately ensure he becomes a king or dictator. Because of this distrust the Constitution says that the Senate (not Congress as a whole) must approve appointments. Generally it was expected that the appointees would be well known to the Senators and that most would be approved without much trouble, however the checks and balances were important to them and so that is why they must approve presidential appointments.

He's very good at demonizing people and name calling--not to mention the ad misericordiams, the strawmen, the false dilemmas. He is a true master of vocal fallacies. The number of times he met with the loyal opposition can be counted on one hand. It takes a true leader to rise above that like Clinton with Gingrich, but Obama isn't made of that stuff obviously. He is a far inferior leader, more interested in his ideology than in problem-solving.

Senator Hagel believes Israel must maintain its Qualitative Military Edge.

It is always all about Israel and it's demands for continued American handoutrs and support for Israel's expansion via land grabs. Hopefully, Hagel will go back on every promise and throw those parasites under the bus. We must stop supporting leaches and parasites.

I really do not care what his opinion of Israel is, last time i checked they were not part of the United States and did not add to our tax base. They are just another entitlement program that needs to be cut. A former foot soldier in charge is what this country needs.

What is sad about having to support Israel is that, in order to do that, we have to cut Social security and medicare here in the US and raise taxes on the average Americans (Not the top 1%).

        That is what stinks.

As Sec Def, Chuck Hagel will carry out his duties as instructed by Obama and those instructions will be to decimate the military so they will be hard pressed to defend this country, much less be a force for good in the world. And, while I'm commenting, John Kerry is also a joke being pulled on the American people. He is about as qualified for Sec State as I am, again he will be merely an extension of Obama. Clapper as Dir CIA, he was with the CIA for 30 years, so there is nothing new or fresh there.

President Obama made it pretty clear on his "apology tour of the world", that he intends to bring this country to its knees both militarily and financially. These appointments will only tend to help him in his quest.

i'm a veteran who just recently retired, a libertarian, and definitely not an obama supporter. so explain to me how budget cuts are going to decimate our military? or why we should be the force of good around the world? plenty of fat to be cut, such as all the bases in europe, countries that can defend themeselves. we spend 20%+ of our budget on the military, and these "allies" spend 3%. our money is better spent elsewhere. or how about getting rid of carrier groups considering we have more than the rest of our allies and largest enemies combined? should i run off a list of military waste i observed while serving? don't think i have enough typing space for all of it. and why are we the ones who are the worlds police? don't we have enough of our own problems to fix, particularly our crushing debt and deficit?

get this guy in to cut military spending. then maybe, but probably the next guy, can start knocking down our bloated entitlement spending.

To old timer - As Hagel has noted, our military is bloated. Our military budget is greater than that of all the other countries in the world, combined. Our military has rarely been used as a force for good. It is used primarily to advance the interests of our multi national corporations and to fuel the military industrial complex. Our generals usually retire to work for the defense contractors in high paying jobs, which are ultimately paid for by taxpayers. We pay for the weapons they manufacture.

The defense contractors are always busy scheming ways to avoid paying taxes on the billions they make,y manufacturing tanks and planes the Pentagon doesn't even want, which are paid for with tax money or monies borrowed from China.

The taxpayers foot the bill for the weapons we use and or ship to Israel. We pay the salaries of all the soldiers, as well as the medical bills that accrue from our wars for Israel.

Hagel will help put a stop to the madness.

BD, you may want to think more kindly of the President especially in regards to advocating for Vets, he has done more and attempted more than any other President in promoting veterans--every GI bill has been voted down by GOP Congress, the latest the Vets Job Bill, Ryan's budget calls for a 13% funding cut for the VA budget, a cut in Tricare for Life, ChampVa benefits, rescinding COLA's for disabled and retired Vets, think your animus is misplaced.

          BD-540164, RalphH:

I too am a veteran, 16 years Army & Air Force, Fought in Korean war 1950-1951 so as you can see I've been around for a long time (80 years). BD I'm not completely sure what Libertarians believe this countries position in the world should be. But, I think they are in favor pretty much of forgetting about the rest of the world (Isolationism)? Enlighten me.

I never said budget cutting wasn't a good thing, God knows we have to cut back on the Federal Govt spending and waste, if we don't we will not survive as a viable nation, much less a world leader. But in all my years I've found, when democrats talk about cutting the military it is a code word for creating a 2nd rate defense of this country. As far as being a force for good in the world, you might ask Germany, Japan, South Korea, about that. All turned into great Democracies and world leaders all because of the strength of the USA. We don't know yet how Iraq and Afghanistan are going to turn out, but our strong military freed about 50 or so million people from brutal dictatorship and gave them the opportunity to chose their own govt. We do know that the entire area of N Africa is now being controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, who have always sworn death to Israel, and to the "great satan" the USA. At this time Isreal is the only real friend we have in the Middle East and they are surrounded by Iran, Egypt, Libya,Tunisia, all of whom are controlled by diehard Islamic fanatics who are bent on the destruction of anything that goes against their beliefs.

Incidently, I don't believe we should be the policeman of the world either, but I certainly believe we need to be involved with the rest of the world.

Old Timer - You wrote: But in all my years I've found, when democrats talk about cutting the military it is a code word for creating a 2nd rate defense of this country

How do you arrive at the above conclusion? Code word? No one wants a second rate defense., but we sure as hell don't need to maintain the military we now have. Furthermore, I don't give a rap what happens to Israel, because I am not Jewish. I am sick and tired of supporting a country which continually steals more and more land from it's Arab neighbors, using weapons procured using my taxpayer dollars.

The Jews in Israel need to start supporting themselves with the flourishing economy they now have. The US is facing bankruptcy and Jews in Congress keep writing bills to give them more handouts.

Israel is the main reason for any hatred of the US by Arabs.

Even though I am no fan, I think the President should be allowed to pick his cabinet with the people he chooses but I do not think a qualification is because he served he can run the Department of Defense, which is more of an accounting and policy position.

His job there is to cut the budget in an effective and efficient manner so a person who could do that makes more sense, not a pick so the President can say he has a Republican so he is bi-partisan.

I wrote Sen Schumer off the day he opened his mouth to bad mouth Chuck Hagle. Schumer is as bad as the Republicans who have tried to destroy, by word of mouth and lies, numerous people these last few years. It seems that no one has any right to speak freely where support for Israel is concerned unless the person is blindly committed to whatever Israel wants. Hagle said what he thought. That gets him my vote. Blind allegiance to any country is stupid and we need to get our priorities straight. If Israel is asking more than this country should be giving in the way of tacit support and military support then someone needs to be able to say that. We do not go to WAR because some other country thinks it will benefit them. We do not go to WAR because the neo cons want to increase their fat contracts and wallets and fight everyone every time there is a conflict. I do not trust Sen Schumer to stay on the path of common sense or make objective decisions and I think he should be ignored where his objections to Chuck Hagle are concerned. Sen Schumer has never been able to handle objectivity and especially not when he needs the Jewish vote for his own re-election purposes. He has lost all credibility with people who try to be fair and objective. He tried to smear Hagle. That stinks. I would never trust Schumer again and the Democrats would do well to get another decent, fair minded spokesman if they want to be taken seriously.

Schumer is a very smart guy. He sensed that Americans in general absolutely got pissed off at the idea that US foreign policy and interests are attempted to be derailed by 0.5% of the population.

                Very smooth Schumer, very nice.

Sen. Schumer may be my NY Senator, but he sure plays the standard political game to the hilt, even about Hagel and his previous hard-line comments.

I cannot forget or forgive Schumer for his AIPAC speech remarks wherein at the conclusion he told us the origin of his name and said in no uncertain terms, "I am the guardian of Israel and as long as I am in the Senate, I will remain that guardian (paraphrased)."

No, sir, you are the guardian of America and our system and our way of life. Help support Israel, yes, help defend them, yes, but you are not a guardian of Israel. If so, then resign and go there and guard them and run for office there. Am I nitpicking; no, I am not. He is. His stance and remarks were sickening from my point of view. Extract of the AIPAC speech here

This is funny, as opposed say to the calm, gentle nature of Donald Rumsfield? Wow, you are grabbing at straws son. Hagel is a war hero, with metal still in his chest from Vietnam. He knows the awesome responsibility of sending our young folks to war, he has been there. I support the President on this choice. Republicans objections at this point, on this candidate look desperate.

I often wonder why the Congress must approve who the President wants on HIS cabinet. After all, they are HIS reps for the various departments of HIS administration.

Probably that little pesky checks and balances thingy written into the Constitution.

Prior to the President nominating Hagel, Hagel was just peachy keen with fellow GOPers, even McCain loved Chuck, once nominated then the bobble heads started with the fear and smear. A War Hero, a pragmatic approach, realistic what war does and can do, studied and steady, not easily lead by rhetoric and party ideology what better position for a man of his qualities--the man is a Patriot and has proven his worth to the country. Good man for the job--even e-mailed that little weasel Rubio to get with the nomination--Rubio will lock-step with the other Elephants but at least I tried.
