First Thoughts: Obama's promises kept and promises broken

Obama’s promises kept… And promises broken… President pins the debt-ceiling responsibility on Congress… Executive recommendations on guns… Keeping track of the cabinet shuffle… Boxer backs Hagel… And a deeper look at Hagel’s “openly aggressive gay” comment.

President Barack Obama speaks during his final news conference of his first term at the East Room of the White House Jan. 14, 2013.

*** Promises kept… : With President Obama’s second inaugural address now less than a week away, we took a look at his biggest three speeches over the past five years -- the 2007 presidential announcement speech in Springfield, IL, the 2008 convention acceptance speech in Denver, and the 2009 inaugural -- to checklist what he promised. And, by and large, he accomplished many of his big objectives. Or he mostly accomplished them. He promised ending the war in Iraq. (“America, it's time to start bringing our troops home,” he said in his ’07 announcement speech.) He promised health care reform. (“Let's be the generation that says right here, right now, that we will have universal health care in America by the end of the next president's first term,” he said in that same ’07 address.) And he promised quick action in dealing with the financial collapse of 2008. (“The state of our economy calls for action: bold and swift. And we will act not only to create new jobs but to lay a new foundation for growth,” he said in his ’09 inaugural.) Of course, there is still debate about whether his fixes will work, but the point is: He made a promise and got his vision of a fix.

Chuck takes a deep dive look into the promises President Obama made before his first term – during his campaign speeches and first inaugural address – and compares them to the things the President did accomplish in his first term.

*** … and promises broken: But he also didn’t accomplish some of his other goals -- like changing the country’s politics, a huge recurring theme in all three speeches. (“On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics,” he said in his ’09 inaugural.) Or recruiting more teachers when it turns out that about 212,000 teacher jobs have been cut between 2009 and 2011. (“Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability,” he said in that ’07 speech.) And then there are the issues that barely got mentioned in those three big speeches, issues that ironically will make up the bulk of Obama’s second term agenda. Guns only received one mention. (“Don't tell me we can't uphold the 2nd Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals,” he said in ’08 acceptance speech.) Ditto immigration. (“Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers.”) And if you believe the increased burden on the government for natural disaster cleanup is related to climate change and global warming, you’ll also be disappointed. Looking back at those most important Obama speeches from ’07, ’08 and ’09, the issue BARELY got a mention. Indeed, it’s remarkable what was in those speeches and what wasn’t.

*** Pinning the debt-ceiling responsibility on Congress: It appears that the chief goal of Obama’s press conference yesterday was to pin the responsibility -- and potential blame -- on Congress for raising (or not raising) the debt ceiling. “There's one way to get around this. There's one way to deal with it. And that is for Congress to authorize me to pay for those items of spending that they have already authorized,” Obama said. And there’s also a reason why the White House decided to abandon the idea of any Plan B (like the $1 trillion platinum coin or the 14th Amendment): They will own part of the chaos if they pursue a Plan B. But by having no Plan B, the Obama White House is trying to ensure that raising the debt ceiling is all on Congress. What’s more, Obama seemed to accept that a government shutdown -- and not the debt ceiling -- is the better place to have a fiscal fight. “Well, ultimately, Congress makes the decisions about whether or not we spend money and whether or not we keep this government open… I think [a government shutdown] would be a mistake. I think it would be profoundly damaging to our economy… But they’re elected representatives, and folks put them into those positions and they’re going to have to make a decision about that.”

*** Executive recommendations on guns: Per NBC’s Frank Thorp, House Democrats were told yesterday that Vice President Joe Biden and his task force have developed 19 areas where President Obama could use executive orders to institute new gun control policy. The New York Times has more: “Actions the president could take on his own are likely to include imposing new limits on guns imported from overseas, compelling federal agencies to improve sharing of mental health records and directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on gun violence, according to those briefed on the effort.”

*** The cabinet shuffle: Yesterday, we learned that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will remain in their jobs during President Obama's second term. So to recap, here are the cabinet secretaries who are remaining:

Napolitano (DHS)
Duncan (Education)
Vilsack (Agriculture)
Holder (Justice)
Sebelius (HHS)
Shinseki (Veterans Affairs)

And here are the cabinet members leaving, plus their nominated replacements if applicable:

Clinton at State (John Kerry nominated)
Panetta at Defense (Chuck Hagel nominated)
Geithner at Treasury (Jack Lew nominated)
Solis at Labor
Jackson at EPA

*** Boxer backs Hagel: Yesterday, Sen. Barbara Boxer -- who is Jewish -- came out in support of Hagel. “After speaking extensively with Sen. Hagel by phone last week and after receiving a detailed written response to my questions late today, I will support Senator Hagel’s nomination as Secretary of Defense,” Boxer said. “First and foremost, he has pledged without reservation to support President Obama’s polices – policies that I believe have made our world safer and our alliances stronger.” More: “I asked him about a number of issues – including America’s special relationship with Israel, the threats posed by Iran to the world and the treatment of women and gay and lesbian members of our military – and his answers were reassuring and show a sensitivity and understanding of these issues. In addition, Sen. Hagel has pledged to meet with me once he has been confirmed for a more detailed discussion about the Defense Department’s efforts to combat sexual assault in the military.”

*** “Openly aggressive gay”: Yesterday, we took an in-depth look at Chuck Hagel’s controversial “Jewish lobby” remark. Today, we examine his nearly 15-year-old description of James Hormel, nominated to be ambassador to Luxembourg, as an “openly aggressive gay.” Explaining his opposition to Hormel in a 1998 interview with the Omaha World-Herald, Hagel said: “They are representing America. They are representing our lifestyle, our values, our standards. And I think it is an inhibiting factor to be gay -- openly aggressive gay like Mr. Hormel -- to do an effective job.” Later, the Omaha World-Herald noted that Hagel said “he has seen another video clip that showed Hormel at what Hagel called an anti-Catholic event in San Francisco, featuring the ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,’ a group of male drag queens.” Luxembourg is mostly Catholic.

*** Apology accepted -- but not by all: Hagel has apologized for the 1998 remarks on Hormel. "They do not reflect my views or the totality of my public record, and I apologize to Ambassador Hormel and any LGBT Americans who may question my commitment to their civil rights. I am fully supportive of ‘open service’ and committed to LGBT military families.” Hormel accepted the apology, and so did the Human Rights Campaign. "Sen. Hagel's apology and his statement of support for LGBT equality is appreciated and shows just how far as a country we have come when a conservative former senator from Nebraska can have a change of heart on LGBT issues,” the organization said. But the Log Cabin Republicans took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post hitting Hagel’s record on gay rights. “Chuck Hagel’s Apology: Too Little, Too Late,” the ad said

Obama does not make promises, he gives speeches of deception and delusion. He relies on his acolytes in the MSM to cover up, deceive or outright deny facts. He has no intent on cutting spending or reducing the National Debt or even the deficit for that matter. The only promise obam will ever keep is the ones that he made to his left-wing mentors. To bring America down!

If the definition of the words "defend" and "destroy" meant the same thing, Obama could count one promise kept ....of defending our Constitution...something he took an oath do and about three seconds to violate (that oath).

Obama does NOT show a good example of cutting government spending by taking lavish vacations to Hawaii on taxpayer money. This president added 4 trillion dollars to the national debt in the last 4 years and wants an unlimited credit card to spend, spend, and spend.

Obamacare will cause your medical premiums to double because the insurance companies have to pass the expense of accepting americans with pre-existing conditions. And if you don't get medical insurance you have to pay a big fat government penalty. Hope you morons who voted for him are happy.

Wall Street Journal article yesterday on this very topic. Some states will see 60-100% increase in premiums due to the pre-existing condition. Every health insurance policy is subject to a new $62 "fee" starting next year for the same reason.

Only the fools that voted obuma back into office, fell for his crap......AGAIN! The rest of us were smart enough to see through his "happy horse sh*t." It still eludes me that there are still many people left in our country that love him more than the U.S.A! Admittedly, most politician's are liars, and are only interested in their own good, (until election time,) but, one thing is certain.....they all love their country, and see it as the greatest place on earth....all, but for this guy, who seems "hell bent" on reducing us to a third class country. He seems to have a "major" chip on his shoulder, over something.

Cut spending, limit the role of government in our lives, allow the economy to stabilize without interference, cut the bickering and rhetoric, and think locally. Where you live should be important to you. The Federal Government cannot solve your problems without causing more problems for some other place. All of you go read the Constitution, no wait, study the Constitution, and then realize how far the Federal Government has overreached it's authority. Open your minds people, this two-party diatribe is the ruination of a great country because the two will do anything to make sure the other is at fault, instead of working for the common good of their citizens. Look at the division in this group on this vine. It is impossible for you to be right when you do not look at an issue from all sides. Checks and balances are a good thing when all are focusing on the betterment of a nation, not the betterment of their party.

I hope the Libs try & push for extending term limits to three or four. I have a feeling after Barry takes us down the tubes, we may be able to get Bush in for another term or two. They need to be very carefull what they wish for. I would even vote for Clinton again before I would for this lying SOS.

Everytime I see "He won" all I can think of is the father in "A Christmas Story" - "I won, I won! Hot damn, I won! A major award!!" And look what the 'major award' turned out to be. Enough with the "He won" already; everyone who posts that gets the 'Captain Obvious' title awarded to them, that's their major award!

What promises has Obama kept his years in office?

        1. Obama promised to get us out of Iraq ASAP, has he? NO! He has not even tried. Soldiers keep dying almost daily.
        2. Obama promised to get the USA out of Afghanistan, has he? NO! Obama has sent over more troops and we past 2000 American deaths in August 2012.
        3. Obama promised to close Guantanamo Bay, has he? NO! Obama has not even tried. (Some say so he’ll have somewhere to live when he is impeached and convicted).
        4. Obama released to the media he has quit smoking! Has he? NO! He has regularly been seen sucking on cigarettes. Quitting takes moral fiber which he lacks entirely. Bottom line, he still SUCKS!
        5. Obama promised hundreds of times 4 years ago to publish pending legislation for a few weeks on C-Span for a “public comment period”. Has he? NO! Nobody at C-Span has heard word one from his administration. Not only that, he has done exactly the opposite! He routinely introduces 1000 page legislation a couple hours before the scheduled vote. He obviously never had a single intention of following through on this promise, the very definition of a bold faced lie.
        6. Obama promised to produce a real birth certificate, has he? No! Only a document not accepted as official identification, never a regular birth certificate, WHY?
        7. Obama promised to “fix” the USA economy within 90 days when Bill Clinton called his financial plan a “fantasy”. Has Obama “fixed” the USA economy? NO! Thanks Obama for cash for clunkers! What a great “fix” for the economy! The “clunkers” were re-sold and are still on the road, the taxpayers got screwed again, but thanks!
        8. Obama promised to “fix” the USA economy, yet we are in more debt by many times than ever before. China is balking at buying out credit now thanks to the mounting Obama debt.
        9. Obama promised to “fix” unemployment, but 1 in 4 Americans in unemployed or underemployed, far worse than 4 years ago.
        10. Obama promised to create jobs, but even with his new calculation including “saved jobs” which economist’s value as “voodoo math” he has lost more jobs during the years he has been in office than before he was in office.
        11. Obama DID take credit for forces which were in place long before he was elected which eventually killed Osama Bin Laden.
        12. Obama promised this election was going to be a dirty, ugly war and immediately set about doing that all by himself. Obama has not only NOT worked on a bi-partisan level, he has done exactly the opposite stirring up class wars, rhetoric, fights and more.
        13. Obama promised to “restore” the middle class in America, which has been nearly cut in half since he was elected years ago. Obama was quoted by a close aide, “The lower income earners are not smart enough to earn more, so we have to do it for them”. He single handedly created a class war knowing those not smart enough were his target audience.
        14. Obama promised the “rich” would pay for the “poor”, so did Karl Marx, Frederick Engels, Vladamir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Tse-tung. Obama told to Joe the Plummer, “I think when you spread the wealth around, it is good for everybody”. What about those you steal from? NOT good for them! What about the American Dream? Obama single handedly KILLED the American Dream!
        15. Obama promises healthcare in the form of what he calls, “affordable”, The American taxpayer can’t afford it. Who can? Freedom used to be what the USA was about, now Obama says, “You WILL buy my health insurance or be fined” What kind of freedom is that?
        16. Why has Obama “classified” his college transcripts? What Obama he hiding? Are they in the same place as his Birth Certificate?
        17. Obama promised unemployment during his term would remain under 7%. Unemployment has remained above 8% for 43 consecutive months and is projected to rise to above 10% within a month.
        18. Obama called Bush “unpatriotic” because of the high national debt, yet Obama has more than doubled the debt spending 100 Billion Dollars in his first 50 days in office.
        19. Under Obama, food stamp use has increased 20%.
        20. Under Obama, a third of the USA is on some kind of welfare.
        21. President Bush added 0.61 Trillion per year for 8 years to the deficit. Obama added 1.76 Trillion a year for three years to the deficit, averaging than 2.9 times President Bush. What do we have to show for all the new Obama debt? New roads? Bridges? Anything? NO! “Cash for Clunkers”.
        22. Obama was a “Community Organizer” in Chicago. Thanks for organizing the gangs! Now they are successfully killing each other. Thanks the strictest gun laws in the country! Guns don’t kill people, Obama’s “Organized” Chicago kills people.
        23. At the Democratic National Convention, the Obama team talked a great deal about the (Bush initiated) death of Osama Bin Laden, but barely mentioned the healthcare initiative known as Obamacare. Why is he embarrassed about the healthcare and financial debacle he is leading us into?
        24. Obama lead the fight to get teachers in Chicago more pay. Sounds like a good idea, may parents were both school teachers. I know the need. Yet the average income in Chicago is just over 30k and the average teachers salary in Chicago is 71k yet they are striking right now. Thanks gain Obama!
        25. Senator Obama called Bush “unpatriotic” for voting once in 8 years to raise the debt ceiling. Yet, Obama has not only voted to raise the debt ceiling, he has done it multiple times in much less time spending almost exactly 3 times what Bush did in a much shorter time span. Is Obama calling himself “unpatriotic”now?
        26. Obama almost single handedly started the biggest class war we have ever seen in the USA. Since the “Middle Class” has shrunk by over half during his term so far, it seems this is a ploy to divert attention away from this fact.
        27. “Re-Distribution of Wealth” or “Re-Distribution of Ownership” seems to be a core belief of Obama. If he gets re=elected as a lame duck, his agenda will be even worse. Hold on to what you own! My Cold Dead Hands!

These are simple facts. This is the “CHANGE” the Democrats voted for. We ARE in Iraq, Afghanistan AT war, Guantanamo OPEN, Obama DOES still suck cigarettes, Obama has NOT contacted C-Span, we have NOT seen a real birth certificate, Obama HAS spent more than ALL previous presidents combined, unemployment IS out of control, Simple Facts. Why on heaven, earth or Mars would anybody even remotely begin to think Obama has done anything worth repeating?!

        1. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. 4 more years of Obama is INSANE!

You do realize it was the Bush tax cuts that created the 53% takers, don't you?

You do realize it was getting into two wars and ramping up Homeland Security that caused the spike in spending, don't you? Oh yeah - and then there was the Medicare part D fiasco.

To all republicans including clueless bill from fairfax, the president has absorbed most of the debt this country has from that little weasel little georgy bush and the now republicans are making it very clear and have been for years playing with our country.I would not mind it at all if republicans were completely wiped out from the lack of voting for them, the only ones who actually support them are gun owners, rich, kickback companys and other individuals who only stand to gain from their pitiful agenda.I can't wait until the midterm elections, the republicans are bragging about holding congress, but i truely believe that will all change come the midterms, face it republicans, the poor are rising and are voting now more than ever then in the entire history of this country!you can't bully people into not voting like the kkk did,who by the way were almost all republican, along with almost all of the southern states who brag being bible conservatives(billfairfax).I have news for all of you republicans out there,i do not prejudge you all for the moronic statements that some very ignorant ones make in connection with all problems this country is facing, after all i have seen more republicans turning democrats every year. And if you republicans out there think that you are the only ones out there who believe in god or the bible, you are gravely wrong. If anything i would think that the lord is more sympathetic to the democrats because the democrats have more consideration for the less likely americans who will benefit from the country run by democrats than by the republicans. In case you are looking for a poster child for your organization then you should look to george the idiot bush. One more thing, republicans are more responsible for the wars we have suffered since our country has formed.Wake up call, wait for the midterms and then you will be able to cry out hard and loud because then you all will feel that you have been betrayed by the democrats,WRONG you people have been betrayed by the republican representatives who have been voted in for all the bad reasons that would destroy this country.

He promised everything but managed to ram through only the most expensive socialist programs at a time when the country is broke -- mostly against the will of the American people. By the way, he keeps saying the "American people" want this or that. He should clarify that his leftist constituency "wants", not the American people.

Thanks Obama for "Cash for Clunkers" and the billions it cost with NO result as all those cars were re-sold and are still on the road.

Pre-election time, and it's all about photo ops, kissing babies, shaking hands, and especially making promises and giving false hope to some. Later, always justifying (in their own mind) why certain promises couldn't be kept. So, nothing new here. Politics: same game, different players.

                    Obama Quote of the Decade:
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
                    ~ Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006~

At least President Bush only raised the debt ceiling once in 8 years. What is this now number 17 in 5 years?

The reason he only had to raise it once you say is because he had money to spend to get to the debt ceiling in the first fricken placy thanks to the previous administration. You skip the fact that the budget for 2009 was set by George Bush, and there was not enough money coming in that year to pay for those bills. President Obama has not put in a big wave of spending that you repubs would like to think he has, matter of fact, Forbes magazine put out an article showing he has spent less in spending areas than any current previous Presidents. The President is only trying to continue to pay what he has since taking over in 2009, it was the previous administration that put us in this situation, I am sorry you dont understand this, but you do your research if you dare and you would. The debt ceiling increase is not for any new bills in the future or future projects, it is for bills that yes, the republican congress has already voted on and approved, which now makes them all just as responsible, even more so because it is their job to see when approving that the funds are there and will be in the future, we are still paying for the Iraq war, and will be for quite some time to come. Federal Pensions and Federal Healthcare are no. 2 as the highest money going out, next to defense spending being no. 1, I know where the cuts need to be, but congress would never lower their future pensions, insurance, and certainly not Defense spending when they want it even raised more. As for our President voting no as senator for the raise in debt ceiling, do some research there too, there was new spending in it, a raise in defense spending also, it wasn't about just paying current bills, I laughed when researching and finding the answer to that one.

                      LIAR!!!!

While the four Republicans in Congressional leadership positions are attempting to hold the increase hostage now, they combined to vote for a debt limit increase 19 times during the presidency of George W. Bush. In doing so, they increased the debt limit by nearly $4 trillion.

At the beginning of the Bush presidency, the United States debt limit was $5.95 trillion. Despite promises that he would pay off the debt in 10 years, Bush increased the debt to $9.815 trillion by the end of his term, with plenty of help from the four Republicans currently holding Congressional leadership positions: Speaker John Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl. ThinkProgress compiled a breakdown of the five debt limit increases that took place during the Bush presidency and how the four Republican leaders voted:

June 2002: Congress approves a $450 billion increase, raising the debt limit to $6.4 trillion. McConnell, Boehner, and Cantor vote “yea”, Kyl votes “nay.”

May 2003: Congress approves a $900 billion increase, raising the debt limit to $7.384 trillion. All four approve.

November 2004: Congress approves an $800 billion increase, raising the debt limit to $8.1 trillion. All four approve.

March 2006: Congress approves a $781 billion increase, raising the debt limit to $8.965 trillion. All four approve.

September 2007: Congress approves an $850 billion increase, raising the debt limit to $9.815 trillion. All four approve.

Database searches revealed no demands from the four legislators that debt increases come accompanied by drastic spending cuts, as there are now. In fact, the May 2003 debt limit increase passed the Senate the same day as the $350 billion Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

When Bush was in office, the current Republican leaders viewed increasing the debt limit as vital to keeping America’s economy running. But with Obama in the White House, it’s nothing more than a political pawn.

Larger classrooms ect... The journalist writing that piece may not feel that is very much, but idiots dont get it, sounds like we need a layoff in that dept. (The job act that the President has been trying to pass has the means for more teachers in it). So many do not get it, Congress is who failed, and they continue to fail, they are bringing Americas to their knees, not even the President could have ever imagined they would be this difficult and partisian when he stated he wanted to change politics, the only thing that could change is to replace every member in congress and make them pay back 50% of their pay, and well, we know that is going to happen, because there is too many idots out there that vote these clowns in because they believe those crooks could uphold their faith when they fail to do it on their own!

P.S. Call me on my new Obama phone.

Does anyone know how to open up lines on credit on my grand kids that are not conceived yet? I already maxed out the credit allowed on my kids and I'm asking for a credit increase (can I just override the credit corp and increase it myself). If the Government can do why can't I.

The biggest mistake Obama made in his first term was thinking that the GOP/TEA/Dumb FUX NEWS party was rational, logical and willing to work with him to get things done.

The Conservatives won't be happy unless they can destroy the Federal Government and take away any assitance to the old, the sick and the poor.

Obama Care & a higher Debt. Thanks for nothing. Your fear mongering about the sick, elderly & poor is getting old. People can't afford this President. We are all going to be sick & old one of these days & there will be nothing left but a debt.
