*** Promises kept… : With President Obama’s second inaugural address now less than a week away, we took a look at his biggest three speeches over the past five years -- the 2007 presidential announcement speech in Springfield, IL, the 2008 convention acceptance speech in Denver, and the 2009 inaugural -- to checklist what he promised. And, by and large, he accomplished many of his big objectives. Or he mostly accomplished them. He promised ending the war in Iraq. (“America, it's time to start bringing our troops home,” he said in his ’07 announcement speech.) He promised health care reform. (“Let's be the generation that says right here, right now, that we will have universal health care in America by the end of the next president's first term,” he said in that same ’07 address.) And he promised quick action in dealing with the financial collapse of 2008. (“The state of our economy calls for action: bold and swift. And we will act not only to create new jobs but to lay a new foundation for growth,” he said in his ’09 inaugural.) Of course, there is still debate about whether his fixes will work, but the point is: He made a promise and got his vision of a fix.
Chuck takes a deep dive look into the promises President Obama made before his first term – during his campaign speeches and first inaugural address – and compares them to the things the President did accomplish in his first term.
*** … and promises broken: But he also didn’t accomplish some of his other goals -- like changing the country’s politics, a huge recurring theme in all three speeches. (“On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics,” he said in his ’09 inaugural.) Or recruiting more teachers when it turns out that about 212,000 teacher jobs have been cut between 2009 and 2011. (“Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability,” he said in that ’07 speech.) And then there are the issues that barely got mentioned in those three big speeches, issues that ironically will make up the bulk of Obama’s second term agenda. Guns only received one mention. (“Don't tell me we can't uphold the 2nd Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals,” he said in ’08 acceptance speech.) Ditto immigration. (“Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers.”) And if you believe the increased burden on the government for natural disaster cleanup is related to climate change and global warming, you’ll also be disappointed. Looking back at those most important Obama speeches from ’07, ’08 and ’09, the issue BARELY got a mention. Indeed, it’s remarkable what was in those speeches and what wasn’t.
*** Pinning the debt-ceiling responsibility on Congress: It appears that the chief goal of Obama’s press conference yesterday was to pin the responsibility -- and potential blame -- on Congress for raising (or not raising) the debt ceiling. “There's one way to get around this. There's one way to deal with it. And that is for Congress to authorize me to pay for those items of spending that they have already authorized,” Obama said. And there’s also a reason why the White House decided to abandon the idea of any Plan B (like the $1 trillion platinum coin or the 14th Amendment): They will own part of the chaos if they pursue a Plan B. But by having no Plan B, the Obama White House is trying to ensure that raising the debt ceiling is all on Congress. What’s more, Obama seemed to accept that a government shutdown -- and not the debt ceiling -- is the better place to have a fiscal fight. “Well, ultimately, Congress makes the decisions about whether or not we spend money and whether or not we keep this government open… I think [a government shutdown] would be a mistake. I think it would be profoundly damaging to our economy… But they’re elected representatives, and folks put them into those positions and they’re going to have to make a decision about that.”
*** Executive recommendations on guns: Per NBC’s Frank Thorp, House Democrats were told yesterday that Vice President Joe Biden and his task force have developed 19 areas where President Obama could use executive orders to institute new gun control policy. The New York Times has more: “Actions the president could take on his own are likely to include imposing new limits on guns imported from overseas, compelling federal agencies to improve sharing of mental health records and directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on gun violence, according to those briefed on the effort.”
*** The cabinet shuffle: Yesterday, we learned that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will remain in their jobs during President Obama's second term. So to recap, here are the cabinet secretaries who are remaining:

Shinseki (Veterans Affairs)

*** Boxer backs Hagel: Yesterday, Sen. Barbara Boxer -- who is Jewish -- came out in support of Hagel. “After speaking extensively with Sen. Hagel by phone last week and after receiving a detailed written response to my questions late today, I will support Senator Hagel’s nomination as Secretary of Defense,” Boxer said. “First and foremost, he has pledged without reservation to support President Obama’s polices – policies that I believe have made our world safer and our alliances stronger.” More: “I asked him about a number of issues – including America’s special relationship with Israel, the threats posed by Iran to the world and the treatment of women and gay and lesbian members of our military – and his answers were reassuring and show a sensitivity and understanding of these issues. In addition, Sen. Hagel has pledged to meet with me once he has been confirmed for a more detailed discussion about the Defense Department’s efforts to combat sexual assault in the military.”
*** “Openly aggressive gay”: Yesterday, we took an in-depth look at Chuck Hagel’s controversial “Jewish lobby” remark. Today, we examine his nearly 15-year-old description of James Hormel, nominated to be ambassador to Luxembourg, as an “openly aggressive gay.” Explaining his opposition to Hormel in a 1998 interview with the Omaha World-Herald, Hagel said: “They are representing America. They are representing our lifestyle, our values, our standards. And I think it is an inhibiting factor to be gay -- openly aggressive gay like Mr. Hormel -- to do an effective job.” Later, the Omaha World-Herald noted that Hagel said “he has seen another video clip that showed Hormel at what Hagel called an anti-Catholic event in San Francisco, featuring the ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,’ a group of male drag queens.” Luxembourg is mostly Catholic.
*** Apology accepted -- but not by all: Hagel has apologized for the 1998 remarks on Hormel. "They do not reflect my views or the totality of my public record, and I apologize to Ambassador Hormel and any LGBT Americans who may question my commitment to their civil rights. I am fully supportive of ‘open service’ and committed to LGBT military families.” Hormel accepted the apology, and so did the Human Rights Campaign. "Sen. Hagel's apology and his statement of support for LGBT equality is appreciated and shows just how far as a country we have come when a conservative former senator from Nebraska can have a change of heart on LGBT issues,” the organization said. But the Log Cabin Republicans took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post hitting Hagel’s record on gay rights. “Chuck Hagel’s Apology: Too Little, Too Late,” the ad said.

The debt ceiling is a rediculous discussion that we should not even be having. Even Obama said that is was a symptom of poor leadership in 2006. ANY country that has more than it's annual GDP in debt, borrows $.40 on every dollar that it spends, pays $.46 in interest on every dollar it pays back is fiscally irresponsible, period. On top of that, Obama and the democrats sit by while we have nearly 20 times our GDP in future liability for Obamacare, Social security, and Medicade. That mean an effective tax rate of 90% for future generations and things don't change. So what does Obama do? What he has always done, blame the republicans and someone else for the issues. I am convinced that he is the by far becoming the worst president this country has ever seen. How can anyone that is truly informed or educated think that is OK? Even Obama's people throw up in their mouths a little bit whenever he speaks these days.
I think we need another war to solve our problems...........how about China or Iran or both lol

All i have heard for the past 2-3 years are rants about the elite class of rich who dont pay their share, how these people and corporate america rule the country.
well you are right, look at the rich in house and senate....if you took a closer look at them all, you will find they have investments in the big rich corporations of America and abroad.
I could post a list of both democrats and republicans who among the rich and powerful in washington, but im sure you know of them already.

What’s bad about this "story" is that they are all lying to you, get a broker on Wall Street and get a few beers in him and he will trip your script. One chief broker that i had the fortune of meeting in a bar and he already being a bit snookerd we engaged in a very appauling conversation, he had told me, and I quote
"The financial market Crashed in 2008, it was over then, but it has just been temporarily propped up by mass "Quantitative Easing” or as marks (common everyday people he said later) call it, “Mass Money Printing” and bail outs, and will eventually crash for good publicly next time as there is perpetual debt BUILT IN to the money making process itself.”
He followed that very reveling sentence up with “If you’ve ever read the little green book call Modern Money Mechanics you would know this. In short, when the Government is “Loaned” the money it is exactly that, A LOAN, and WITH INTEREST Man!” He stopped there and gave me a dumbfounded look and said “Now, I know your not a Banker and whatnot but im guessing you at least have the common sense to figure that one out, well ill tell ya, If the only place that has the money loans it out with Interest, well, where would the money come to pay for that interest? Well, the only place it could!, The Fed Reserve!, and by the way, the “Federal” Reserve is as “Federal” as Federal Express. It is actually almost foreign owned believe it or not as its largest share holders are not from even this country. If the public ever found out, they would (expletive) the (expletive) out. They would come to understand that this central bank has had an illegal stake in this country’s prosperity and future since the early 1900’s and never really have had the people’s interest in mind. Now THAT is the game changer my friend and I don’t mind telling you this because its been too late for at least a decade. We will have a manufactured crises this year, I wasn’t read into the details but preparations have been underway since September? December? Of 2011, and my guess is, and its just from what ive seen in the big boys plays are either a derivative crises or some sort of resource embargo, most of the boys back on the floor are saying it would be oil but that’s just a rumor, for now.”
Our conversation lasted for 4 ½ hours until the Barkeep kicked us out and we parted ways, but what this man had to say really shook me, not only just the content of what he was saying but how he said it, he said it like it was “As Fact” and so carelessly, like he assumed that I should just know all of this.
He did give me a couple of hints but he made them seem unintentional I don’t know if he meant it that way or not but im not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, he said make sure to buy REAL gold, some gold companies are selling what they call Phantom Gold to citizens that send in their money, sometimes Entire Life Savings, and ,well Good God, expect to receive real valuable gold. You can make sure by reading a companies history, typically the older the better, and buy Silver NOW. They just stopped the sale of circulated Silver Eagles and the prices are soon to skyrocket just like gold did.
He said one last thing that struck me odd, he told me, “Go Google up this Gerald Celente character, he is a modern Nostradamus they say, which I could see that since he has a 98% accurate track record, which you cant really beat. He even knew when the crash was going to happen in ‘08 and it was amazing. A lot of our higher ups don’t like him because he tells it like it is and ha doesn’t care of your opinion of him. Ive read his online journals and it was astonishing what he predicted, it was almost like he was You and someone like I had told him information that was beyond his current understanding, but he keeps predicting things that play out almost like a script to his predictions, so you have a very good chance of being forewarned about things that have not yet come to pass but surely will.
I will never forget that night and it will be the most important experience I have had yet, and I am taking all of his advice, this old inebriated stockbroker’s advice and you know why? Because I could see it in his glazing eyes that he was telling the truth. And to think, the reason I stormed out of my house and down the street to that bar in the first place was because I wanted to get away from my television and our current situations that are flashing all over the news, it was too much, but life had a sincere ironic lesson that it wanted to teach me, and boy was I taught.

here is the thing about the new gun law legislation. the mini 14 and mini 30 ranch rifle is included in the ban. the two versions of this gun are used on a daily basis by farmers/ranchers, like myself, to protect their livestock and crops from predators and varmints. i say if you want to pay one hundred dollars for a pound of hamburger due to livestock loss from predators, or fifty dollars for a head of lettuce due to crop loss from varmints, then go ahead and ban them.
i dont know about you but i think the executive order is in essence dicatorship, and that power should be removed from our government!

on what to pay or not to pay: don't pay the Congress or its bills, retirement and medical care plans. budget wise, we are usually ahead on payments to contractors that are supposed to be building ships for the Navy, planes for the Air Force, and tanks for the Army. hold back their payments until they are not behind schedule. furlough about 1/2 of the Federal beauracracy. you'd be surprised at how much gets done by the remaining half. stop printing money. there are enough bills floeating around to make a trip to the Moon several times. cut out foreign aid, especially to those who don't support the US in the UN, or profess to be our friend but stab the US in the back every chance they get. remove China from most favored nation trade list and stick them with a higher tarriff on all their products. don't pay the President or his Cabinet until they show some leadership in getting the US finances straightened out, regardless of how long it takes. do those things and I bet the Congress and the Administration would work like beavers to get things taken care of.
We’re at the point where painful cuts have to be made if this country is going to survive. Obama stated, “There's one way to deal with it. And that is for Congress to authorize me to pay for those items of spending that they have already authorized,” Notice he did not mention cutting or reducing any programs. It’s not like the republicans do not want to pay for the debt already incurred they just some cuts in spending. If your household borrows a lot of credit card money to pay its bills do you continue to spend at the same rate or make cuts to manage the debt. All Obama is doing is kicking the can down the road so someone else has to deal with mounting problem.
If you want to take a serious look at what raising the debt ceiling really is about..
-think back to when you were 12 years old. How much money were you allowed to borrow (prob from your parents)? maybe $10.
-Skip forward to when you were 16. Did you buy a car (assuming mommy and daddy weren't rich)? How much did that car cost? did you have to borrow more than $10? Probably, and it was probably a few thousand. (hint- you raised your debt ceiling)
-Skip forward to when you went to college (again, assuming mommy and daddy weren't rich). How much did you borrow? I borrowed about $40,000. (another hint- another raise in the debt ceiling)
-Skip forward to when you were just starting your career and lost your job (yet again, no handouts from mommy and daddy). I did. And I had to borrow money from (luckily!) my grandparents. It was that or be homeless, frankly. So I borrowed money until I found a job. I borrowed about $12,000. Because I still had the college loan debt of $40k, I had to... repeat after me here... RAISE MY DEBT CEILING! But I got through it and I paid my grandparents back.
-Skip forward to post-graduation (AGAIN- NO RICH MOMMY OR DADDY). Did you buy a house? I did and I borrowed $417,000 to do it. guess what? I HAD TO RAISE MY DEBT CIELLING AGAIN!
-Now I make about $300k / year and own my own business. I tell you what... if you give me a tax break, NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL, I will pocket the money! duh! What I need is DEMAND for my services, which is when I will hire someone as a "job creator". I WILL NOT HIRE SOMEONE THAT I DO NOT NEED! effing repubs are feeding you all a pile of horseyshlt and you are eating it up. please think folks. please think.

The debt limit is about future spending. To service the existing debt takes $20 bil per month. The government on average takes in $200 bil per month. So we can already pay for "What has been spent". This President is all about tax and spend tax and spend.

Most (but not all) people are okay with paying interest on a home loan, because they get a benefit out of paying that interest (LIVING IN THEIR OWN HOUSE). But our debt amounts to $55,000 for every man woman and child in this country. What benefit do you get for your tax payer dollars spent to keep that debt (not lower it) for your $55,000? And now Obama is claiming that the ONLY way to pay that interest, is to borrow more money to pay for the interest on what we alreay owe, and threatening the Republicans to force them to raise our debt limit.
I believe my 2 year old knows there is ANOTHER solution, SPEND LESS!!!!!

Ending the War in Iraq? He did everything within his power to keep from withdrawing the troops on the date that Bush and Iraq agreed on. And guess what? We STILL have troops there. But by all means, let's call this a promise KEPT.
This article says he promised health care reform, and then immediately follows it with what he really said. We have universal health care in America? Wow, if you believe that, you will buy this watch! But by all means, let's call this a promise kept. HMMM!
And the fixing of the financial crisis is in the promises kept catagory also? I bet a few of the people in the unemployment line will beg to differ.
