*** Promises kept… : With President Obama’s second inaugural address now less than a week away, we took a look at his biggest three speeches over the past five years -- the 2007 presidential announcement speech in Springfield, IL, the 2008 convention acceptance speech in Denver, and the 2009 inaugural -- to checklist what he promised. And, by and large, he accomplished many of his big objectives. Or he mostly accomplished them. He promised ending the war in Iraq. (“America, it's time to start bringing our troops home,” he said in his ’07 announcement speech.) He promised health care reform. (“Let's be the generation that says right here, right now, that we will have universal health care in America by the end of the next president's first term,” he said in that same ’07 address.) And he promised quick action in dealing with the financial collapse of 2008. (“The state of our economy calls for action: bold and swift. And we will act not only to create new jobs but to lay a new foundation for growth,” he said in his ’09 inaugural.) Of course, there is still debate about whether his fixes will work, but the point is: He made a promise and got his vision of a fix.
Chuck takes a deep dive look into the promises President Obama made before his first term – during his campaign speeches and first inaugural address – and compares them to the things the President did accomplish in his first term.
*** … and promises broken: But he also didn’t accomplish some of his other goals -- like changing the country’s politics, a huge recurring theme in all three speeches. (“On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics,” he said in his ’09 inaugural.) Or recruiting more teachers when it turns out that about 212,000 teacher jobs have been cut between 2009 and 2011. (“Let's recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability,” he said in that ’07 speech.) And then there are the issues that barely got mentioned in those three big speeches, issues that ironically will make up the bulk of Obama’s second term agenda. Guns only received one mention. (“Don't tell me we can't uphold the 2nd Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals,” he said in ’08 acceptance speech.) Ditto immigration. (“Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers.”) And if you believe the increased burden on the government for natural disaster cleanup is related to climate change and global warming, you’ll also be disappointed. Looking back at those most important Obama speeches from ’07, ’08 and ’09, the issue BARELY got a mention. Indeed, it’s remarkable what was in those speeches and what wasn’t.
*** Pinning the debt-ceiling responsibility on Congress: It appears that the chief goal of Obama’s press conference yesterday was to pin the responsibility -- and potential blame -- on Congress for raising (or not raising) the debt ceiling. “There's one way to get around this. There's one way to deal with it. And that is for Congress to authorize me to pay for those items of spending that they have already authorized,” Obama said. And there’s also a reason why the White House decided to abandon the idea of any Plan B (like the $1 trillion platinum coin or the 14th Amendment): They will own part of the chaos if they pursue a Plan B. But by having no Plan B, the Obama White House is trying to ensure that raising the debt ceiling is all on Congress. What’s more, Obama seemed to accept that a government shutdown -- and not the debt ceiling -- is the better place to have a fiscal fight. “Well, ultimately, Congress makes the decisions about whether or not we spend money and whether or not we keep this government open… I think [a government shutdown] would be a mistake. I think it would be profoundly damaging to our economy… But they’re elected representatives, and folks put them into those positions and they’re going to have to make a decision about that.”
*** Executive recommendations on guns: Per NBC’s Frank Thorp, House Democrats were told yesterday that Vice President Joe Biden and his task force have developed 19 areas where President Obama could use executive orders to institute new gun control policy. The New York Times has more: “Actions the president could take on his own are likely to include imposing new limits on guns imported from overseas, compelling federal agencies to improve sharing of mental health records and directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on gun violence, according to those briefed on the effort.”
*** The cabinet shuffle: Yesterday, we learned that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will remain in their jobs during President Obama's second term. So to recap, here are the cabinet secretaries who are remaining:
Napolitano (DHS)
Duncan (Education)
Vilsack (Agriculture)
Holder (Justice)
Sebelius (HHS)
Shinseki (Veterans Affairs)
And here are the cabinet members leaving, plus their nominated replacements if applicable:

*** Boxer backs Hagel: Yesterday, Sen. Barbara Boxer -- who is Jewish -- came out in support of Hagel. “After speaking extensively with Sen. Hagel by phone last week and after receiving a detailed written response to my questions late today, I will support Senator Hagel’s nomination as Secretary of Defense,” Boxer said. “First and foremost, he has pledged without reservation to support President Obama’s polices – policies that I believe have made our world safer and our alliances stronger.” More: “I asked him about a number of issues – including America’s special relationship with Israel, the threats posed by Iran to the world and the treatment of women and gay and lesbian members of our military – and his answers were reassuring and show a sensitivity and understanding of these issues. In addition, Sen. Hagel has pledged to meet with me once he has been confirmed for a more detailed discussion about the Defense Department’s efforts to combat sexual assault in the military.”
*** “Openly aggressive gay”: Yesterday, we took an in-depth look at Chuck Hagel’s controversial “Jewish lobby” remark. Today, we examine his nearly 15-year-old description of James Hormel, nominated to be ambassador to Luxembourg, as an “openly aggressive gay.” Explaining his opposition to Hormel in a 1998 interview with the Omaha World-Herald, Hagel said: “They are representing America. They are representing our lifestyle, our values, our standards. And I think it is an inhibiting factor to be gay -- openly aggressive gay like Mr. Hormel -- to do an effective job.” Later, the Omaha World-Herald noted that Hagel said “he has seen another video clip that showed Hormel at what Hagel called an anti-Catholic event in San Francisco, featuring the ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,’ a group of male drag queens.” Luxembourg is mostly Catholic.
*** Apology accepted -- but not by all: Hagel has apologized for the 1998 remarks on Hormel. "They do not reflect my views or the totality of my public record, and I apologize to Ambassador Hormel and any LGBT Americans who may question my commitment to their civil rights. I am fully supportive of ‘open service’ and committed to LGBT military families.” Hormel accepted the apology, and so did the Human Rights Campaign. "Sen. Hagel's apology and his statement of support for LGBT equality is appreciated and shows just how far as a country we have come when a conservative former senator from Nebraska can have a change of heart on LGBT issues,” the organization said. But the Log Cabin Republicans took out a full-page ad in the Washington Post hitting Hagel’s record on gay rights. “Chuck Hagel’s Apology: Too Little, Too Late,” the ad said.

It seems so simple for the Pseudo conservative GOP Right Wingers. If you truly want cuts, just continue to do nothing. Problem solved. It seems that the truth may be that there is no such thing as a conservative. Its just a matter of where they want to blow our tax dollars. Senators know how to do the right thing. The right thing is seldom in their best interest. Special interests win elections leaving the candidate beholding to the beneficence of the special interest. Interesting how Repubs bring up President Obama's comment on the debt ceiling when he was a Senator, opposing raising the debt ceiling......but they never bring up that Repubs always voted for aising the debt ceiling under Bush...now they are against raising it.

Researched back when he was a Senator, come to find out there was new projectory spending in that, and one of a few was defense spending. When Bush took over, there was a lot of money left before reaching the debt ceiling that he spent, and at the same time lowered the amout of revenue coming, when it was seen that current bills and new defense spending to fund such as Haliburton, Banks, ect... The Bush congress finally needed to raise the debt ceiling, and have been borrowing since. President Obama took over in 2009 with an already blown budget and not enough funds to ever catch it up, now republicans would like to not believe that President Obama had already taken over a country in debt with not enough allocated funds, but that is because they like believing that way, if they had to actually find out the truth, it would burst their happy little bubble they like to float around in.
It can be said that the reverse is true, the libs find it ok for the pres to change his mind, but not repubs!

Our current debt is about $50,000 for every man, woman, and child. Obama (and Congress) is adding about $5,000 more every year!

The Democrats always do well in elections whenever there is high unemployment and rampant poverty. That's why they work so hard to keep our country there. The Republicans do better in elections when there is low unemployment and a vibrant, growing middle class.

The president is absolutely right. Congress decides spending. All they have to do is decide to cut spending to the point where they will have a surplus and they don't have to raise the debt ceiling.
Of course, Harry Reid hasn't passed a budget in nearly 4 years, thereby not upholding the Constitution which breaks his oath and leaves him as an obvious target for impeachment. Of course, 51% of Americans have no concept of responsibility so "leaders" like Harry can get away with childish, immature, and irresponsible behavior because that describes his constituancy.
The public sector does not receive a single dollar that hasn't first been, or will be, earned by the private sector. Even the taxes public sector employees pay were first earned by someone in the private sector. When the public sector does buisness with the private sector they are merely giving the private a sector a chance to earn their money a second time. I agree, not happily, that that debt ceiling should be raised, since we already spent the money. But what needs to be done is to say it wont happen again. A balance budget, with a large chunk of it dedicated to paying down the debt, needs to be put in place.

the president would have better served the country if we could discuss some of these things as current events not history, it's called an objective press. how about a straight forward discussion on his comments yesterday on the debt ceiling and the deficit? the idea that negotiations in conjunction w/raising the debt ceiling are something new is just not factual period. further, his statement that he has agreed to $2.5 trillion in deficit reduction is not true. he has signed into law tax rate increases that could result in an additional $600 billion over 10 years that could be applied to deficit reduction. that is it. where is the other $1.9 trillion: $1.2 trillion is the amt covered by sequester and has been put off until mar of 2013. (sec panetta has said the defense portion of those cuts would be more than what he considered safe.) using the pres' figuares that brings us to $1.8 trillion now he really makes a leap to say money we were not going to spend on the war and the debt interest saved from not owing that money that we were not going to spend brings the total to $2.5 trillion. what???? that is what he said.

This is a president that got a elected to be the most transparent, bipartisan, not make deals with closed doors, unemployment to be around 5%, passed a health care bill with no republicans and bribed Democrats to get it passed. Blames Republicans for the Fiscal mess that he's still creating by not curtailing spending and asking for more revenue so he can even spend more and than still blame Bush going on 5 years. While being a Senator saying our debt was to high and not sustainable. looking back and now forward we elected a President thats not solving the problems and that his way is the highway with the Republican Congress the blame for not compromising while he's running this Nation like a Dictator. My first paycheck of 2013 had another 87.00 deducted for the Social insecurity tax. My paycheck each month is going down 174.00 and where is that money going ? Social InSecurity planners already estimate that this simple tax hike will bring in 2.1 billion extra a year. Why does Social InSecurity need 2.1 billion extra. Because the then president Jimmy Carter raided the SS fund to pay for the Cuban and Haiten immigrants a montly check from a fund they probably will never contribute a penny to. Why is my hard earned wages being used to pay welfare to immigrants. Why do Immigrant children attend college under the Pell grant and graduate college which is paid by my SS fund ? They often leave the USA and return to their natice country with free education paid by the US taxpayers espense. Why are the children of Congress allowed to attend college and not pay their bills for education when their parents are often millionairs. Answer those questions and you will reveal the truth but nobody will listen of course

I am glad you are retired. First of all, he has never admitted to being born in Kenya. He has a father who was a Kenyan national. Mitt Romney had a father who was born in Mexico and quite a few members of his family still live there. However, Mitt was born in the USA. Just because his father was born in Mexico, it didn't preclude Mitt from being an American. Secondly, Obama is not a Muslim. He went to a Muslim school in Indonesia. That's like a Protestant going to a Catholic school. I've known quite a few Protestants who have done so and it did not make them Catholic. I have worked since I was 10 years old and am retired now and I voted for Obama. I expect nothing for free. I don't mind paying taxes knowing our taxes are at their lowest level since the 1950s and way less than in any other industrialized nation. I love my freedom, I fought for it in Vietnam and I vowed to defend the Constitution. However, sadly, I am not a Christian, but I am an American and I am glad these two designations are not exclusive to being an American. I do, however, believe in loving my neighbor and that helping others who aren't as blessed as I am is a noble thing to do. Oh, I forgot, I thought those were basic Christian principles.

He has indeed kept the Patriot Act in place, but he did not expand it. In my opinion keeping it in place and not fighting to overturn it is a MAJOR mistake nevertheless.
He signed the NDAA (again a mistake) because even if he had not, it was OVERWHELMING APRROVED by BOTH the House AND the SENATE. So put the blame for this one were it lies and that is SQUARELY with our idiot Congress and our equally idiot conservative dominated Supreme Court.
