Capping off a week of meetings with stakeholders in the debate over gun control, Vice President Joe Biden called a session with the National Rifle Association 'productive' despite the group's public complaints yesterday.
"I thought we had a very straightforward, productive meeting," Biden said of yesterday's closed-door session with pro-gun groups.
The NRA charged in a statement yesterday that the Obama administration has "an agenda to attack the Second Amendment."
Vice President Joe Biden will present his task force's gun policy recommendations Thursday – among them, most likely, to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
But Biden said that the variety of gun owners' organizations that met at the White House yesterday did not all share the NRA's opinions on the causes of and potential solutions for mass gun violence.
“There was actually a difference among them as well,” he said. “There was not a uniform view.”
Biden invoked a common metaphor about firearms to describe the challenges facing foes of gun violence.
"We know there's no silver bullet" for stopping mass shootings, he said during a meeting with video game industry representatives.

The vice president has said he wants his task force to present recommendations to the president by next week.
"I'm shooting for Tuesday," he said. "I hope we get it done by then."
As Vice President Joe Biden prepares to present sweeping gun control proposals, residents of Newtown are speaking out. Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine what triggered Adam Lanza's rage. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

Well this should be interesting. Anyone can do what they wish or say what they wish but ultimately this will lead straight onto the door steps of the Supreme Court.
And even if they commit to a ban on assault rifles that still won't fix the problem. Clinton did the same thing and Columbine still occurred. Assaults with firearms still occurred and oddly enough less than 3 - 5 % of those assaults were actually committed with an assault type style rifle. Not to mention that when the ban went into place everyone who already owned the rifles didn't have to give them up.
We now have over 80 million firearm owners in the United States.
This will be a very interesting 2013 indeed.
What's an assault rifle?
A fairly lightweight rifle firing a small caliber, high velocity bullet and equipped with a magazine that holds at least 15 rounds. Another feature that the media usually get wrong is a selectable semi auto-full auto capability.
In the previous ban here is something I didn't get. I owned a rifle that I bought in the early 70's and still have. It came in two versions among others. One had a full stock version I owned. One came with folding stock and it was banned. Now two Rifles with exact capabilities but one band the other not. the stock had nothing to do with how the rifle performed.
Well this time around I expect there will be a lot more than just an assault weapons ban. In fact they may not even try a ban, and do something else completely. Im expecting a lot more regulations and rules. They may even go with a licensing system, and gun registry. And probably background checks on all sales.
I bet even ammo is controlled. Atleast I hope it is.
We will not give up our guns to satisfy a bunch of soul-less "progressives" who will only be satisfied after they have pounded the conservatives yet again. Gun owners, I urge you to do two things now, give money to the NRA and lets start to muster the militia in each state to show them that we are alive and organized. If they want to come try and take our 2nd Amend. rights, then they will have some idea of what it will entail. MUSTER AND STAND UP TO BE COUNTED. LET THE SHEEP COME ON.
Suggestion for all the gun enthusiasts. I’ve seen stuff advertised that is suppose to make your dicks bigger. If you get some and it works, you might not need all those expensive guns.
Typical response from a pencil-neck geek.
Has anyone besides me noticed that every time a multi-victim shooting occurs(but curiously only with white victims), the anti-gun forces trot out their demands for gun restrictions quickly followed by the number of guns and ammunition being sold skyrocketing? When Obama was re-elected, the number of gun and ammo purchases took a huge leap. The liberals' attempts to get guns out of criculation are actually resulting in a huge increase in the number of guns in the country.
Almost everyone has noticed that mass murders and talk of new gun regulations are very good for the NRA and gun dealers. You just might be a little slow.
Gun sales are skyrocketing.
Hussein Obama and Joe Biden are the best membership recruiters the NRA has ever had!!
Less than 3% of homicides in the U.S. are committed using a semi automatic type rifle and most of those are justifiable homicides where law enforcement was the shooter. Look it up on the Uniform Crime Report.
I mean I'm all for guns but what are some of your talking about? Are you really concerned with the US government taking your stuff? I have bad news for you. If they want to, they will. Your guns aren't going to help. Where are you living within the United States in 2013 and what are you doing with your lives on a daily basis that you are so consumed with the amount of firearms and ammo that you are allowed to carry? It just doesn't make any sense. A guy breaks into your house and you have a gun and you shoot him. I get it and I hope you finish him, but what do you need for that? You need 25 guns and a thousand rounds? Get a job and move to a better neighborhood. I live in south Florida. I don't see armed militia in my neighborhood trying to take over my condo complex. The 2nd amendment is great but you cant keep trying to extend it to mean that you cant just do whatever you want. We have the right to bear arms to protect ourselves and our family. We don't have the right to make our own rules. Looking for reasons to shoot someone isn't part of the constitution. Tomorrow is Monday. Go to work!!! Carry a gun or don't carry a gun. Make a better life for yourself.
If there is one thing that the US should have learned from 9-11-2001, it is if someone is intent on harming others, they don't need firearms. Especially if these people are willing to die, like most of these maniacs are willing to do.
bin Laden said that only a few of the 9-11 people knew they were going to crash the planes into the world trade center. He laughed about it.
I need both my assault weapons because I can aim one at the big black man lurking around every corner and the other at the evil gubmint.
This is a no-win issue for the GOP. Even if they succeed in preventing the reinstatement of the assault rifle ban (the one that Reagan helped put into place), they will be seen as moving further and further to the extreme and beholden to very small special interest groups.
Conversely, it's a no-loose issue for the democrats.
This is like everything based on fear of what people do not understand. We need education to stop the hoplophobes from spreading irrational fear.
Another point, could you actually have a ban on high capacity magazines and assault weapons, wouldn't banning high capacity magazines negate by definition an assault rifle? At the least it would confine such a definition of an assault rifle to strictly cosmetic features.
Ole Joe really thinks as long as bloviating crap is coming out of his mouth it must be good for the masses. Hey Joe, you had a good teacher, Barry "O". If you think talking at, through and down to folks with a different version of the world is productive, you obiviously are a pea brain. And in your case, I apoligize to the pea!
Most of us are very bad at trying to communicate with the lunatic fringe.
"Productive" to Joe Biden means "we're going to shove it down your throat but we're going to have a photo op before we do it".
That's the ideology of the left, who gives a dam what the majority of the nation says or wants, it's what THEY want that counts. Don't think so?
Look at the "Affordable Care Act". Over seventy percent of the nation did NOT want it passed and even today almost sixty percent want it repealed.
The "stimulus"? Almost seventy percent said NO to the "simulus" and you see how that went.
Bailouts? Over sixty percent said NO to bailouts and the nation got another snub from Democrats.
Gun "control"? Over half the nation says NO to bans on weapons and yet Obama/Biden/Feinstein/Democrats are acting like they have some kind of mandate to do whatever they want to and TO HELL with the country.
This is NOT about "the will of the people", what this nation's government was founded on.
This is about a political ideology that out and out IGNORES the founding principles, including the Constitution itself, in order to create some kind of western European society of massive government control and intrustion into people's lives and then telling us how "wonderful" it is that we are losing right after right after right that is supposedly GUARANTEED to us in the Constitution.
It is unfortunate that a single idea that "guns don't kill, people do" continues to sway decision makers from confronting and resolving the problem, mass murderous episodes of innocent children in venues that are supposed to be safe havens for children.
This over used cliche actually clouds the issue or I should say, issues. Too many guns is one problem but protecting the children is another and the 2nd amendment should not be used to prevent implementing actions to protect the children. If better, more restrictive gun laws are deemed viable towards this goal then I would even go as far as updating the 2nd amendment no matter how long it takes.
I agree with you that a hand gun can kill as many children as an assault machine gun, if the shooter has enough time to do so.
... if the shooter has enough time to do so!
That is the point in banning the assault weapon or any weapon that with rapid fire capability. Take away, from the psychopath, the added advantage of killing more in less time.
Take a good look at the recurring variables these mass killings have; psychopaths, assault weapons, easy access to vulnerable victims in large groups (maximum damage, i.e. vengeance).
1, Banning assault weapons, including easing replaceable magazines.
2. Better screening of individuals with possible psychopathic mindsets.
3. Secured gun-free zones, especially schools, malls, theater, churches and the like.
4. Better registries of gun owners and health records. This is where a big improvement can be made, "joining the dots" between guns and potential psychopaths. Instead of wasting billions fighting other nations wars, we could be using those resources build a database that can weed out the dangerous combination of psychopaths and guns before the both go off simultaneously. Oh yes, to hell with both the NRA and the ACLU.
These are not problems, as both the NRA and ACLU would have us think. These pieces of the same puzzle and must be considered in detail in order to make any progress in curtailing shooting sprees.
What irritates people, like Mr Obama ( a decent and devoted parent), who wants to implement solutions, now! One of the main obstacles is people like the NRA and ACLU who will compound the problem definition, make the problem very complex by broadening the scope of the problem so that it is legally impossible to right a bill and/or bills that can pass not just through deadbeat Congress but pass through the supreme court. This is a common ploy played by politician since we came out of the caves.
... It must stop!
Congress is responsible to find solutions to problems. Breaking this problem down to a level, a series of issues of which each can be addressed separately and quickly and legally. Again I say, if an amendment to the 2nd amendment to protect our children is necessary then lets get started, now. Don't pass the buck to the next Congress and/or administration.
Deal with the PSYCHOPATHS and the convenient choice of weapon, THE GUN, now. The psychopath by nature will neither have the capacity to create a complex weapon of mass destruction nor the mindset. By that I mean he/she will snap momentarily and will act quickly under state of mass confusion and emotional instability. He/she will reach for the MOST CONVENIENT weapon and exercise his/her fantasies quickly. I believe there was an association between the shooter in Connecticut and the school, yes he did attend that school himself but there must be more to the story for going after those specific children. I hope they can figure it out.
As for the rebel militant, domestic and foreign, I think since 9/11 the Department of Homeland Security and the agency under, in particular the FBI, are doing an excellent job.
Again, when one is confronted with a very complex problem, then you must break it down to pieces which can be handle quickly logically and legally. If we need an amendment to the constitution then we, collectively, should be ashamed of ourselves of showing negligence in our responsibility to our children.
To hell with NRA and ACLU.
-------------------------------------
"Connecting the dots."
Here is the point from another perspective ... there has not been any incident in the US since 9/11, (many attempts but none were allowed to be played out to the point where people lives were at stake) ... Why?
Because we finally made the decision to use the resource necessary to enable our intelligence community to "connect the dots" and eliminate the threat before the bastards had a chance to do their thing. We have now one of the best intelligence system in place ever. And we were able to do it through a collective agreement amongst all sides and sometimes we needed to push hard against the limits of the law in order to get things done.
I believe there are a lot of components in the intelligence system we use against the terrorist that we can cut and paste and make one that will protect the children against domestic threats.
The point is, we have solutions to enable to address all the threats against the children. I agree with one concept the NRA has raise, guards in schools. BUT, no guns in classrooms nor the schools, rather a secured perimeter out of site, (out of mind) of the children. Schools are for education and building a decent and sound character not entrenching the use of guns and future recruits for the NRA.
The NRA keep pointing the finger at violence in movies and TV, what about the continued expensive, aggressive, and deliberate marketing for guns?
If all side care about the children then show good faith and pass a bill, within a month, that will address all the threats that we all can agree on. Then tackle each outstanding issues one at a time until we have dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's.
The children are our future.
It is abundantly clear that we absolutely MUST have effective screening when it comes to PERMITTING private gun ownership. The only question is who is in the best position to do that effective screening and PERMITTING of private individuals, the individual states or the federal government. (I happen to believe the individual states are in the best position to manage all of this, even if they need to solicit federal records as a part of the process.) - Rick Carter
(For one thing, which is easier, getting records from one federal govenment, or compiling records from all 50 states?)
(For God's sake, people, almost everyone in this country need permits just to fish! Give society a break, will you PLEASE? Is it really that big of a deal?) - RC
(Please keep in mind there can always be different types of gun permits as well.) - RC
So what’s the difference between a Liberal, a Conservative and a Southern Conservative?
You’re walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small chil...dren. Suddenly, an Islamic terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises his knife, and charges you and your family.
FYI: You’re carrying a concealed 9mm and your wife’s carrying her 38 Special. You’re both expert shots. You have only seconds before he reaches you and your family. So, what would you do?
A Liberal’s answer: “I don’t have enough information to answer that question!” For example:
Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack us? Could we run away? What is my wife thinking? What psychic impact will this have on my kids? Could I possibly swing my gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Do our pistols have appropriate safety features? Why am I carrying a loaded concealed weapon anyway? What kind of message does this send to society and to my children? Is it possible he'd be satisfied just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he stabs me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? Is this our fault? We shouldn’t have come this way! We need to raise taxes and clean up this neighborhood! We need to make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage terrorist behavior! I need time to discuss this with some friends and try to come to a consensus of opinions! I’m confused!
A Conservative’s answer: BANG!
A Southern Conservative's answer: BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
Biden: NRA meeting was 'productive'
Productive for who? Biden could care less what the National Rifle Association had to say. Biden is a master showman/politician that wanted ignorant firearm owners to think he was fair minded in protecting their rights by meeting with the NRA. Some of these are the same ignorant firearm owners who vote in anti-gun politicians.
Still we never saw Joe Biden's military record because he has none the draft dodger. Sorry, draft dodging only applies to non-democrats.
Today is the day they pass on their recommendations.
Pucker up!
