Biden: NRA meeting was 'productive'

Capping off a week of meetings with stakeholders in the debate over gun control, Vice President Joe Biden called a session with the National Rifle Association 'productive' despite the group's public complaints yesterday.

"I thought we had a very straightforward, productive meeting," Biden said of yesterday's closed-door session with pro-gun groups.

The NRA charged in a statement yesterday that the Obama administration has "an agenda to attack the Second Amendment."

Vice President Joe Biden will present his task force's gun policy recommendations Thursday – among them, most likely, to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

But Biden said that the variety of gun owners' organizations that met at the White House yesterday did not all share the NRA's opinions on the causes of and potential solutions for mass gun violence.

“There was actually a difference among them as well,” he said. “There was not a uniform view.”

Biden invoked a common metaphor about firearms to describe the challenges facing foes of gun violence.

"We know there's no silver bullet" for stopping mass shootings, he said during a meeting with video game industry representatives.

The vice president has said he wants his task force to present recommendations to the president by next week.

"I'm shooting for Tuesday," he said. "I hope we get it done by then."

As Vice President Joe Biden prepares to present sweeping gun control proposals, residents of Newtown are speaking out. Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine what triggered Adam Lanza's rage. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

Whoo hoo! Government wants to have. enforce gun control, save the children, their families... Ok then stop abortion its the leading killer of our future generation(by the way, abortion is NOT planned parenthood)(planned parenthood is taking responsibility before you get pregnant), oh and hey take away knives, oh and lets not forget every product that can be used in homeade bombs, lets also take away alcohol since drunk drivers kill innocent people. While we are at it lets ban Monsanto for poisoning the seeds for crops, stop all insecticides as they can cause health issues and death.... Really has the USA became so ignorant that they can't see that all Government wants is total control of our daily lives and choices? I've read where 32 oz soft drinks are being banned and super sized candy bars, Dang if parents quit sitting their kids in front of video games and sent them outside to play these items would not be and issue. There we go, lets ban all graphic violent video games that feed violence to the unstable that are causing the good law abiding people to lose their rights if the president/vice president get their way.

"Freedom of Religion" has been changed to "Freedom FROM religion", at least as it pertains to those awful Christian nuts.

The Constitution is also old and out of date and doesn't really apply in todays modern world. Isn't that what our leaders are saying these days?

Actually 1 & 4 have already been decimated, for decades. 4, 5 & 7 was decimated by the Patriot Act (ask the ACLU). 4 will be decimated online in a couple months when every text is kept.

So logically, they are hitting the 2nd.

There are two prerequisites for turning a free country into a dictatorship: #1) Control the flow of information; #2) Disarm the people.

I don't think it is coincidence that protections against these are #1 and #2 in the Bill of Rights.

I think they are brilliant, after all they have moved their agendas along just fine and are making their dreams come true more and more each year. For 2013 we have a huge increase in taxes, marriage has been downgraded to nothing more than a contract of convenience, that whole husband/wife raising a family thing is circling the toilet, crime is on the rise, unemployment isn't really improving, we're becoming just another Country in the eyes of the world, leadership and responsibility is just too hard, and once we lose our weapons of war, we'll be even less able to stop the destruction of this once great nation. I'm glad I don't have many years left, but am worried about my children.

I want someone who supports gun control to explain why they want to get rid of the AR and high capacity magazine even though they are used in less than .001% of gun violence? In most states, the AR isn't even deadly enough to use on deer.

LMAO - Productive? If your concept of productive is an empty jester for media consumption that never had any intent or expectation to be anything but a photo-op, then yes, it was productive.

If these meetings had been public with all sides of the issue present and able to debate the pros and cons of each, then maybe it would have meet the transparency in government the administration promised 4 years ago. Its all a bunch of hooey. Biden and his pals had already decided what they were going to do well before the official "talks" even started. Bans and restrictions, the ignoring of the 2nd amendment, etc., etc., same SSDD.

So for 2013, we all pay more taxes, our health insurance premiums goes up, we lose more liberties and are less able to defend ourselves against the bad guys and a potentially completely out-of-control government. The 2nd amendment did have a clear intent to arm civilians against it's own government gone wild if the need ever arose you know.

Yeah for 2013, it's comforting to have less money to buy food and gas, and 911 should be enough to stop those bad guys that are kicking in my front door. God Bless America. Opps, I forgot I'm not allowed to use the "G" word in public.

Per capita The U.S. has less violent crime than most other industrialized nations.

The International Crime Victims Survey, conducted by Leiden University in Holland, found that England and Wales ranked second overall in violent crime among industrialized nations. Twenty-six percent of English citizens — roughly one-quarter of the population — have been victimized by violent crime. Australia led the list with more than 30 percent of its population victimized. The United States didn’t even make the “top 10″ list of industrialized nations whose citizens were victimized by crime.

Totally meaningless even if it is true. The majority of NRA members already do not agree with its leadership's inflexible positions on common sense gun control legislation, just as the majority of Americans - recoiling in disgust at the slaughter of innocent children in their own classrooms - are demanding action.

Inaction is no longer an option, and we wish the president and vice president well in spearheading the difficult task ahead.

Doing nothing is no longer an option, and most Americans support the president and vice president working to implement common sense, reasonable gun control legislation that can, at the very least, help stop this type of carnage from happening as frequently as they have been. Nothing unreasonable about that.

Politicians do not care about saving lives, other than their own. Politicians fear the fact that free Americans have in their possession a tool of freedom, only to be used if the ballot box and the jury box have failed and the government has turned against the people. The Second Amendment has NEVER been about Hunting, it has stood forth as the last refuge of the citizen who's government has desided to cast aside the Constitution and dictate to the people if they will be given rights by said governemnt. We the People of the United States of America cannot, in good conscience, let our government deside how we must live, how we raise our families, what medical treatment we can and cannot recieve, nor any other unconstitutional restriction of a free people that effects our lives, liberties, and our pursuit of happyness. If we bow to the pressure of dictatorial politicians to give up on our Second Amendment Rights, then the rest of the Bill of Rights will be meaningless and unenforcable by a defenseless population of serfs. If you give up your tools of freedom for a false sense of security, you deserve neither and will eventually live on your knees under a government that will prove that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Dont believe it would happen here? Watch "The Battle of Athens Tennessee" on YouTube. Many times, some of the last words spoken by many people who were slaughtered by their own governments were, "It can't happen here."

He HAS been talking to some of these folks - are you not paying attention?

Joe will do his very best on this. He is as upset about the slaughter of all these little children as the rest of the country, and wants to make a positive difference. Be patient - he will make his recommendations to the president next week.

Ok Jersey...let me ask you this ONE question....why hasn't the President or Biden talked about and asked the American people to buy safes for their guns? That one thing would have already saved lives...Obama was fine telling us all to put air in our tires to conserve energy....yet when in the spotlight doesn't ask people to get safes...Just curious???

Face it their agenda just follows the liberal mind set...frankly I think Obama's tears where contrived and an act....he just cares about HIS policy's...

Where are the headlines of his meetings with real experts. I see that Biden has met with the NRA, video game executives, the Brady Commission and various reps from the entertainment community. I can't find any mention of meetings with the APA, the security industry or criminologists.

Ok. I'm done arguing with you gun lovers for tonight. You're boring me. You can all jerk off to your latest issue of Guns and Ammo while I go screw my gorgeous, blond, liberal, atheist wife. Good nite!

Being Godless is hardly something to be proud of.

Of the 142 guns used in mass shootings over the last year only 25% were so called assault rifles. The counts.

                              68 semi-auto handguns

                              20 revolvers

                              19 shotguns

                              35 semi-auto rifles

So banning semi-auto rifles does not address the problem. Even if you did shooters would just use different weapons. What makes sense is to put guards in schools, arm some staff after vetting and training, provide tighter access to schools (no one should be able to walk in unchallenged), and keep guns away from mental cases.

Numbers, statistics, logic, facts. They are all meaningless to liberals.

They refuse to balance the level of public harm with the level of effort need to combat that harm. They will cynically use any news as an excuse to limit our freedoms, and then ignore any contradictory facts.

A different coloring or grip can cause a gun to be classified as an assault rifle. NEXT !

Two guns can be identical down to make and model with the same clip. One can be an assault rifle, and the other may not be, but they fire exactly the same way, hold the same amount of ammo. The laws make no sense.

Rocky - Liberals have no actual knowledge or understanding of firearms. They can only judge one based on how scary it looks.

Most Liberals own firearms, many of them own "assault weapons", many of them hunt as well, and many of them illegally own guns and guns that are illegal. There are pressure groups lobbying Washington, and many are working hand in hand with the media or are the media themselves who either have little understanding of the issues, or are strictly supporting anything Obama says and does blindly. Where is the ACLU in this ? As our rights are being taken away, they have been silent.

                              Rocky -

The ACLU? YOu are joking, aren't you? The ACLU of the present is all about the liberal agenda, eroding our freedom of speech and other freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and Bill of Rights in the name of political correctness. They are part of the reason this country is in the state of moral decay that it is.
