The speaker extended the customary invitation to the president to deliver the speech on Tues., Feb. 12., the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.

Boehner wrote in his letter:
Our nation continues to face immense challenges, and the American people expect us to work together in the new year to find meaningful solutions. This will require a willingness to seek common ground as well as presidential leadership. For that reason, the Congress and the Nation would welcome an opportunity to hear your plan and specific solutions for addressing America’s great challenges. Therefore, it is my privilege to invite you to speak before a Joint Session of Congress on February 12, 2013 in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol Building.
Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to your response.
Obama's speech is sure to include elements touching on the upcoming battle with congressional Republicans over taxes, spending and entitlements -- an outgrowth of the "fiscal cliff" deal at the beginning of this month. The president has also previously said that the recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden's gun violence task force would be part of his State of the Union speech.

He was going to deliver it on Ground Hog day...
But then he realized that this would be an ironic juxtaposition of events.
One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to an insignificant creature of little intelligence for prognostication.
The other involves a groundhog.

I wonder if he is going to address the two percent payroll tax increase on everyone who made less than $400,000 a year. Maybe, it's politically expedient or politically correct to tax the rich but what if it raises prices and makes employers cut back on hiring? If no one's taxes were going to be raised, maybe it wouldn't have been such a big fight over the whole thing in Congress. I wonder if any of the significant people ever read these blogs.

More Taxes, government regulations and increased medical insurance premiums just about sums up the state of the union.
I really don't need to hear another 'Bush created this mess', and everything would be just fine if only the Republicans would compromise and let me double and triple down on spending.
I can't imagine how our President can spin everything in the State of the Union speech. He can't point to the economy, jobs getting better, new mortgage requirements that make it much harder for low income/lower middle class folks to get a mortgage. He can talk about guns but that's a dog that won't hunt and maybe by then some of the FEMA funds will have gotten to NY/NJ but he can't applaud the FEMA response. He could trumpet Obamacare but when it starts costing our country a fortune then he'll be wrong there too. He can't point to his past promises because he's lied about so many of them. He did get that tax increase on the upper income but he can't really talk about how effective that is because he knows it was only symbolic not revenue effective. He doesn't want to even mention Benghazi. So if there's any good college hoops game on in the same time period I'll probably opt for that because an hour of bitching about the Republicans is more than I can take.

That's not what he said moron... he said that "legitimate rape doesn't usually cause pregnancy"... and statistically if it happens less than 50% of the time, he's right. Give that for any given woman/rape instance the odds that she's ovulating is way less than 50%, it's true.

State on the Union should take less time than a typical commerical. "We have been and continue to be in the crapper with our debt well over 16 trillion and the only thing slowing me down from increasing it faster is Congress. By the way I still do not have a budget and need you to raise my debt limit see you next year."

Of course, Congress raises the debt limit not to cover what the President might ask for, but the money they already borrowed and spent. Not that facts should confuse you guys.

It is time for Congress to implement impeachment proceedings against Obama for violating the constitution. He has sworn to abide and defend the constitution but he continues to violate it. As a so-called constitutional lawyer, he feels he can issue an executive order any time he wishes. He wants to bypass the 2nd ammendment and soon if he gets his way as a self proclaimed King he will next be using an executive order to by pass the 1st ammendment.
For a president who has given his sacred oath to support and defend the constituion, he continues to stomp on it! For this he should be impeached.
Yup, I see this coming, I predict Obama plans on using his Executive Order for Gun Control and raising the debt ceiling. Watch for this to happen and see how he gets away with it!

Steve, if you are going to spout right wing talking points, at least have SOME facts right. The oath of office for the President is that he/sh will "Preserve, Protect, and Defend" the Constitution.
We don't need to wait for another speech from the Liar-in-Chief. Even a blind person can see it. Headed freefall towards another 2 trillion in debt with a wrecked economy and a shredded Constitution. In essence, since the little dictator has decided to shred the Constitution there no longer exists a Union.
