Obama to deliver State of the Union on Feb. 12

President Barack Obama will deliver the first State of the Union address of his second term on Feb. 12, House Speaker John Boehner's, R-Ohio, office said Friday.

The speaker extended the customary invitation to the president to deliver the speech on Tues., Feb. 12., the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.

President Barack Obama hosts a bipartisan meeting with Congressional leaders in the Roosevelt Room of White House to discuss the economy in this file photo with Speaker of the House John Boehner.

Boehner wrote in his letter:

Our nation continues to face immense challenges, and the American people expect us to work together in the new year to find meaningful solutions. This will require a willingness to seek common ground as well as presidential leadership. For that reason, the Congress and the Nation would welcome an opportunity to hear your plan and specific solutions for addressing America’s great challenges. Therefore, it is my privilege to invite you to speak before a Joint Session of Congress on February 12, 2013 in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol Building.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to your response.

Obama's speech is sure to include elements touching on the upcoming battle with congressional Republicans over taxes, spending and entitlements -- an outgrowth of the "fiscal cliff" deal at the beginning of this month. The president has also previously said that the recommendations from Vice President Joe Biden's gun violence task force would be part of his State of the Union speech.

Can't wait to see the gloves come off!

I've noticed the President is much more willing to call the right wing obstructionists out!

Judging from the approval rating of the Congress critters, it appears people are tuning in...

Better start popping the *popcorn* now...

The invitation sent by Boehner must be a form letter from way back.

There has little indication that the two sides are willing to work together and the republicans are more at fault in my opinion. The only time that anything of measure is passed in a bipartisan manner has so much pork attached you'd think that the Farmer John and Jimmy Dean cos were a part of D.C.

But I look forward to hearing the ideas that president Obama will share with us. I hope that he will be addressing the jobs issue more intently than the gun issue. If people were happier about their lives there might be less violence in the first place.

Also, STOP the nonsense of approving bills that have everlasting loopholes for the top earners! WTF! There is only one word for what is going on and that is... DRAMA! Government either needs to get the job done or get the @!$%# out via hot pink slips!

Today I received my Progressive Survival Pack from the White House.

It contained a parachute, an 'Obama Hope & Change' bumper sticker,

a 'Bush's Fault' poster, a 'Blame Boehner' poster, a "Tax the Rich' poster,

an application for unemployment, an application for food stamps,

a prayer rug, a letter of assignation of debt to my grandchildren,

and a machine to blow smoke up my ass. All directions were in Spanish.

Keep an eye out. Yours should arrive soon

It came with some brown substance for my nose in relation to Grover Norquist.

A forget Bush bumper sticker.

An envelope for investing in Bain Capital.

A Tax the Poor poster.

An application to privatize my social security with very fine print.

An NRA stuffed gun for my kid.

Some beans and rice for the recession that will come after all the cuts to the budgets.

Instructions from corporations about how I should vote.

A hollow Boehner bobblehead.

And a CD that says over and over "The NRA is your friend....trust corporations".

It is impressive when liberals join in a chorus about how they hope Obama displays a lack of leadership for more finger pointing and blame. That should really set a great tone in Washington and be just what is needed to get everyone working together. Yeah right. Anyone that thinks Obama has brought this country back from the brink is a fool. Obama may have been successful at delaying the worst possible scenarios, but he certainly hasn't saved the country from them and the cost has been astronomical. This country is on an unsustainable path, and Obama has done absolutely nothing to change that fact. Obama has done a lot to make it worse by doing nothing to address the massive debt and deficits, when he could have embraced Simpson Bowles. The question remains, and maybe during the state of the union address can be answered as to whether Obama actually cares or not.

The 18-member panel needed 14 votes to send a 10-year plan to trim the debt to Congress for a vote. As his party’s then- ranking member on the House Budget Committee, Ryan led a bloc of three House Republicans who denied the additional votes needed.

All three Senate Republicans on the panel backed the plan and one of them, former New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg, said he believes the House Republicans who rejected it were beholden to an argument by anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist that the measure was tantamount to a tax increase.

So far 127,000 people have signed a petition for Texas to peacefully leave the union on the White House site alone. Voters in 34 states have filed the petitions. We are fighting Obamas war in Afghanistan in which he has quadrupled the death rate of our American soldiers, our national debt is approaching warp speed, most Americans make about 1/3 the pay that they used to, Obama is gearing for war against Syria assisting the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and I just lost my home and my job.

State of the union ? Soon there may be an armed rebellion, and I may be a part of the resistance militia.

The problem is that debt is skyrocketing and I've ruined the economy so that there are no jobs and no one is paying taxes anymore. As a result, I'm going to take away your food stamps, welfare, & Obamacare and you people are just out of luck."

As of today, American children are saddled with $16 trillion in debt and Obama wants to add to that debt....and liberals refuse to even acknowledge that we have a spending problem.

As our debt is now over $16,447,000,000,000 (yes that's 16.44 trillion) and rapidly going up, it will be interesting to watch that dumb-ass we have as President get up there and lie to us on how well we are doing. $6 trillion is under his watch, more than all prior presidents combined! His goal, remember, is to destroy America as we knew it, and he is doing a great job.... Overspending and severe debt, then bankruptcy and the establishment of a socialist system is the way he is going to do it. Prime example: look at Obamacare. You just gave him four more years to succeed.

So, congratulations to all the idiots that voted for Obama. It is you that are going to be negatively affected the most as the greatest nation on earth goes down the tubes.

Yes, the massage debt that W. Bush left us. The argument of high spending on the watch of Obama has been debunked over and over again. We are paying the Bush bar tab.

Let’s all think back to September 2008 and the financial storm that had developed and the whole government and the rest of the world that was unraveling in financial markets. The jobs were going down so fast that and the United States had suffered the worst crisis sense the great depression.

Then Obama takes over on January 20, 2009, and suddenly it’s his fault. No way! Obama stepped into this storm on the brink of depression, and Obama has done a GREAT job of turning the country around.

I honestly have to say anyone that doesn’t recognize this fact is pretty out of touch with reality, and living in “Rush World.”

JIm- You keep trying to imply that Bush and Reagan are no longer presidents, so they have no hand in our current situation. The logic is flawed.

Reagan dismantled mental health services in California and funding for schools. Both have been a mess ever since. He then came to us as President and blew up the debt while dismantling services. Even he raise taxes several times - but the GOP is in denial about Saint Ronald's true impact on this economy.....

Bush blew a surplus into a deficit in 8 years - perhap a record, right? He and the GOP rubber stamp Congress the first 6 years put disastrous things in place that the obstructionists have managed to continue - two wars not budgeted for or paid for in any way (no tax increases - actually tax DEcreases), the new dept of homeland security ($90 billion every year), refunds of the surpluses when they should have gone towards the remaining debt, expansion of the Defense Dept more than double...... and all the new DOD related offices around D.C in Virgina (Eric Cantor says "Thanks"!), then several tax cuts to reduce revenues....significantly. He finished it off with a flare - recession.

No - neither are president now, but their legacy lives on both in the numbers and the burned out monetarism and neo-con focus they espoused. Get the GOP to denounce them and the messes they made, and to change to start managing the nation instead of blocking anything constructive (filibuster without anyone talking is no filibuster...) and I wll gladly stop discussing them.

Dorfus, There NEVER ever was a surplus so you lose you weak argument rather quickly !

By the way, there is absolutely no "implication" that Bush and Reagan are not Presidents ... it is a FACT !

Califronia needs absolutely NO Republican help in becoming a mess, they are controlled by the Democrats who pass an inordinate amount of asinine legislation (like regulating Happy Meals), continue to raise taxes and run away businesses .... but continue to spend like Hollywood ! LOL !!

A comedian once said: "The people of California are like a bowl of cereal ... you can get rid of all the FRUITS and the NUTS .... but you still have a bunch of flakes" !

California, like our federal government, needs to throw away the charge card and learn how to pay for things.

Obama has had a budget each and every year....I'm so tired of that inaccurate talking point.

Yeah Eric, a budget he couldn't even get his own party's congressional members to vote for Even when the democrats had complete control of DC. I'm getting pretty tired of your inaccurate talking points. I got money on the president serving two complete terms without having had a budget passed through congress.

Heck, the way things are going, he'll probably pass a budget by Executive order bypassing the legislative branch.

    Lil Michelle

We all know that the banks were forced to give out loans so that "every Amercian could get a house".

We all know what happens when you tell private companies "don't worry about what is best, we will back you" - and how the banks abused it.

Actually, Clinton and the attorney general threatened the banks with enormous fines and loss of FDIC coverage if they did not comply. It was not the banks fault. The blame rests squarely on Clinton. It was basically a pyramid type of scheme that works for awhile, then collapses with disastrous results. I wish John Kerry had won that election so the public would truly understand exactly what happened.

The election put glass around the GOP chimp cage and all those that support it. Interestingly enough, one side-effect of this has been the realization for the rest of us that they will continue to throw their own waste at the onlookers even when it just bounces back.

You idiots that continue posting your whiny drivel about budgets, etc. have no idea of the facts surrounding your stupidity, such as the detail that it wasn't the presidents budget that didn't get Dem votes, but a procedural stunt by the chimp party to create your illusions of opinion.

Throw chimps throw!!! You'll have to clean your cage at some point or you'll no longer be able to see us laughing through the glass. You are the serf class in your political party. As if that weren't bad enough, you choose to be. What is that trickling down, anyway?

Obstructionism is what Harry Reid has done to the previously passed BUDGETS of the House. Perhaps, Ursula, you can go to the Senate chamber, physically lift up Harry Reid's ass and see what bills he is sitting upon.

You'll have to lift up his butt to see what's under it .... kind of like "You'll have to pass the bill to see what's in it".

This year President Obama has a lot of accomplishments to talk about. Bringing the nation's economy back from the brink W left us in is just one, but probably the biggest. Continuing to get Americans out from under the oppressive and expensive thumb of the health insurance industry is another.

Too bad the obstructionist GOP slowed down the recovery process. In California, now that the GOP is an insignificant minority, the deficit is gone, surplus is back, jobless is down, and housing prices are climbing. See what you can do if you eliminate the extra baggage, obstructionist GOP clowns?

Getting to know our past presidents a little:

John Adams – He is the great great grandson of John and Priscilla Alden, who came to America in 1620 on the Mayflower. He was the first president to reside in the White House, and is one of only two presidents to live past his 90th birthday.

Thomas Jefferson – The first president to shake hands and not bow to people.

James Madison: When he was dying, he was offered drugs so that he might live to Independence Day, July 4th and die then. He refused and died on June 28, 1836.

James Monroe –Served in the Revolutionary War and was severely injured during the Battle of Trenton. He spent the winter at Valley Forge alongside General George Washington. James Monroe and his wife were close friends with James and Dolly Madison. Monroe died in NYC at the age of 73 on July 4, 1831, Independence Day,
exactly five years after John Adams and, his old friend and fellow Virginian, Thomas Jefferson, had died.

John Quincy Adams - The first president to be photographed. He was the only president to be elected to the House of Representatives after serving as President. Adams argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of slaves from the ship Amistad who mutinied during their journey from Africa.

Andrew Jackson - First president born in a log cabin. He was the only president to serve in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Martin van Buren: He is the only president of Dutch ancestry and he and his wife spoke Dutch at home. He was the first President born a U.S. citizen. He was born on December 5, 1782, making him the first President born after the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Once again, Ursula, making assumptions is a dangerous thing and you are not very good at it. When the stock market goes down, it is not Obama's fault. When it goes up, Obama gets all credit.

My broker tells me the market is somewhat artificially high right now because savings in banks pay virtually nothing in interest.

Ford never took bailout money. GM stock today is worth SUBSTANTIALLY LESS than the amount our government paid in to bail them out .... actually just a buyout of union cadillac health plans for retirees. Chrysler is now majority-owned by FIAT.

Ah, Jim - saving face by mentioning, "My broker tells me..." - who exactly is that, Simmons, Sealy, or Sterns & Foster?

The market crashed in 2008 on GWB's watch, and while it's had some ups and downs, it's improved steadily. Why can't you admit that the economy is improving? Luckily, you are right about one thing - regular savings pay virtually no interest - so your mattress will do just fine.

annualized returns under G.W. Bush for the eight years ending January 20, 2009. I did the same for the period since January 20, 2009 for Obama.

      The results:

      • G.W. Bush - negative 3.5 percent annually
      • Obama - positive 20.1 percent annually

Fact: The US stock market performed better under Obama than G.W. Bush by a staggering 23.6 percentage points a year.

      1927 THROUGH 1998

      The results:

      • Republicans - positive 1.7 percent annually
      • Democrats - positive 10.7 percent annually

Fact: Through 1998, US stocks performed higher by nine percentage points annually under Democrats than Republicans. If this study were to be updated, the gap would widen further.

Any mention of this on the "News?" Where are the republicans on this?

        From Bill O'Reilly's message board:

Here are just a few examples of what has surfaced with much more to come.

        * In 59 voting districts in the Philadelphia region, Obama received 100% of the votes with not even a single vote recorded for Romney. (a mathematical and statistical impossibility).

        * In 21 districts in Wood County Ohio , Obama received 100% of the votes where GOP inspectors were illegally removed from their polling locations - and not one single vote was recorded for Romney. (another statistical impossibility).

        * In Wood County Ohio , 106,258 voted in a county with only 98,213 eligible voters.

        * In St. Lucie County, FL, there were 175,574 registered eligible voters but 247,713 votes were cast.

        * The National SEAL Museum , a polling location in St. Lucie County, FL had a 158% voter turnout.

        * Palm Beach County , FL had a 141% voter turnout.

        * In Ohio County , Obama won by 108% of the total number of eligible voters.

NOTE: Obama won in every state that did not require a Photo ID and lost in every state that did require a Photo ID in order to vote.

        Imagine that!

"Self proclaimed" refers to Job1's asinine comments about people voting against their self-interests.

If your boss doesn't want to pay for your healthcare then government has to pay. That means higher taxes on everyone. Too bad. Your boss doesnt want to pay for your kids schooling so government has to tax for public education. I work a job where I enjoy helping people. Its hard rewuires alot of concentration, but when I am done I have no healthcare can't pay my bills and its flat out dead end for earning money. Topping it all the company does offer health benefits, but they don't cover anything. In fact the company earns a profit on the plan.

Our patriotic and law bidding gun owner should not be held responsible for the acts of other gun owners. However, it is the moral responsibility of Gun Makers, Gun Sellers, Gun Buyers and Gun Owners to help protect our children from Gun violence.

Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the President, Congress and every mother and father in the USA to protect their children from gun violence.

Therefore, I recommend a very easy solution to curtail this gun violence.

We the people of the USA should tax each gun made 100%, tax each gun sold 100%, tax each gun violent video game or movie 100% and tax each gun owner $20.00 a year for gun safety.

The income from all of these taxes should go to the protection of our children from gun violence in our schools and other public places, (i.e. This tax money will be used by public schools for hiring school guards, school entrance surveillance and by the NRA for giving gun owners yearly Gun Safety Classes).

This Gun Tax can be easily adopted by the President and Congress without all the 2nd Amendment issues. Furthermore, it would help the NRA and its law bidding gun owners and support their call for gun safety and gun violence.

Lastly, if a person has a gun and does not pay the $20.00 a year tax they are now a tax evader and can be prosecuted under IRS Tax Law.

I have to agree with Urban Roman that a tax on firearms won't work. People pay higher than high taxes on cigarettes don't they? If someone wants something bad enough they will have it regardless of the tax. Those taxes would merely raise the cost of firearms for law abiding citizens and since so many of said firearms are stolen the bad guys aren't the ones paying the taxes on them but they are the ones doing the most damage with them.

There is no simple or one shot solution to the problem of gun violence in this country. There are things we can do that will respect the rights of citizens to own firearms under the 2nd Amendment while making it more difficult for bad guys to get them, especially the military type.

        1. Ban all automatic or semi-automatic weapons from civilians. These are military and should be used as such not for hunting, target practice or even self defence.

        2. Background checks on all transfer of firearms whether a gift, a sale and whether private parties, gun shows, gun shops or any other reason. The whereabouts of all firearms should be known in a database as it travels from one to another a record must be kept. As a firearm is transferred to police in a buy back program the weapon, when destroyed, would be removed from the register.

        3. Incrase penalties for any crime involving a firearm with high power, assault type weapons as special circusatnces and facing even more punishment.

        4. If a firearm is stolen and used in a crime the person who it was taken from should be charged as an accessory to the crime unless he/she has taken measures to lock and secure the firearm in a manner that makes it extremely difficult to impossible to take.

        5. Education of anyone and everyone using firearms. Just like one needs to take a test to get a license to drive a car so should one have to be licensed and take a test to be able to use a firearm. Stiff penalties can be levied on anyone using a firearm without a license or who has a training permit but without a licensed person present while firing at that deer or target.

        6. Awareness training for leaders, bosses, and people who work closely with the public in gun stores, gun shows, schools, stores in general, anywhere where people gather together and through a hot line be able to register concerns about the mental stability of someone else. This may cause people ticked off at someone else to use the hot line to get even so due caution must be used in descretely investigate anything reported to such a hot line. Psychologists can be helpful in showing people what to look for and what to do about it. They can also be the ones on the hot line doing triage and directing "friends" to talk to those who may be at risk and find out what they can. If needed the court can commit them for observation but the case would have to be from a licensed Psychologist or Psychiatrist and only when absolutely necessary keeping as much anonymity as possible.

        7. Us gun buy back programs as much as possible to get guns off the streets.

        8. Since idle hands make the devil's work people need jobs. If one is working at a job he is less likely to be desperate enough to want to kill someone (nothing is absolute so don't get the knickers in a twist). Police on the streets instead of being laid off due to budget cuts will also relate to ensuring jobs and ultimately reducing crime.

We will never be totally rid of gun violence nor crime but we shouldn't do nothing. We shouldn't just wring our hands and say little or nothing. Small children getting killed has finally woke some people up to the increasing gun violence in America and maybe now we can and will do something about it.

When a criminal has to stop and reload there is an opportunity for would be victims to escape harm or for police to nab him but when he has hundered round clips to allow him to fire and keep firing in rapid succession we see what happens. Sandy Hook Elementary School may look like a non-event if something isn't done about such rapid fire wapons and soon. And no righties no one is wanting to take away reasonable guns from you.

If I had a gun for protection I would opt for a shot gun. It may not kill an intruder but sure would stop him in his tracks giving me time to dial 911. Likely if such a weapon were stolen or lost (which I would report immediately) only a few people may be killed. Horrible as that is things would be worse with a semi-automatic or automatic assault military type rifle especially with a mega ammunition magazine.

As rare as it is common sense must prevail here. The solution isn't simple but can be done so those who are responsible gun owners can have their guns, gun manufacturers can still stay in busines, yet people can feel safe and we no longer see such horror stories as we have over the last few years with the violence using so many unsecured and military weapons.

A President can set agendas, plans, hopes, dreams etc. but he isn't in it alone. CONGRESS has to be a part of it too. Now that Mr. Obama is no longer threatened with being a one term president he can utilize the bully pulpit for its intended purpose to inform the public, get the citzenry on his side and shame Congress into acting. This president, like it or not, won by a sizable margin. Call it a mandate or not, he won. There are more Democrats in Congress to help him out but will it be enough to counter the stick in the mud, stick it to the middle class Republican extremists? The Union is better off today than when he took office. I would have liked it to have been much better but it is what it is. His policies have helped to slow the spending of recent Congresses who spent like drunken sailors on wars that weren't funded at the time. Credit cards come due and that time is here. New spending has been smaller under Obama than any other president in recent time.

Some whine about tax and spend but at least under tax and spend we tax those benefitting from the spending and don't burden others with our excesses as under borrow and spend like under the last Adminsitration.

My only regret with President Obama is he didn't use the bully pulpit effectively enough with the affordable care act (Obamacare) and so there are still misconseptions about it. Once fully effective people will like it more and more. Tens of thousands, perhaps millions are already benefitting from it and as time passes more and more will benefit. Soon it will be political suicide for one to try and dump it just as it would be political suicide to scrap Social Security or Medicare and Medicaid.

I will be interested in seeing how well he uses that bully pulpit in his speech.
