A Georgia Republican congressman said that former Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, R, was "partly right" in asserting that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely become pregnant.
Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., a former obstetrician-gynecologist, said at a town hall meeting that Akin was “partly right” in his controversial suggestion, which was widely cited as a factor in his loss to Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, D, this past November.
Gingrey said, according to the Marietta Daily Journal:
“And in Missouri, Todd Akin … was asked by a local news source about rape and he said, ‘Look, in a legitimate rape situation’ — and what he meant by legitimate rape was just look, someone can say I was raped: a scared-to-death 15-year-old that becomes impregnated by her boyfriend and then has to tell her parents, that’s pretty tough and might on some occasion say, ‘Hey, I was raped.’ That’s what he meant when he said legitimate rape versus non-legitimate rape. I don’t find anything so horrible about that. But then he went on and said that in a situation of rape, of a legitimate rape, a woman’s body has a way of shutting down so the pregnancy would not occur. He’s partly right on that.”
[...]
“And I’ve delivered lots of babies, and I know about these things. It is true. We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ‘Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don’t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.’ So he was partially right wasn’t he? But the fact that a woman may have already ovulated 12 hours before she is raped, you’re not going to prevent a pregnancy there by a woman’s body shutting anything down because the horse has already left the barn, so to speak. And yet the media took that and tore it apart.”
Akin originally told KTVI-TV in August: “First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Republicans quickly distanced themselves from Akin, urging him to end his bid for Senate to allow another GOP candidate to step forward. Mitt Romney, then the party’s presidential nominee, publicly said that Akin should end his campaign.
However, Akin, a congressman, resisted the calls for him to drop out, giving Democrats fodder to paint Republicans as out-of-touch with women voters. Another GOP Senate candidate, Indiana’s Richard Mourdock, also gave fodder to Democrats when he suggested that pregnancies by rape were “something God intended.” (Mourdock, like Akin, lost a Senate race on which Republicans had been counting to win.)
Gingrey addressed the cost of those controversies before making his own assessment of the science behind Akin’s remarks:
“Part of the reason the Dems still control the Senate is because of comments made in Missouri by Todd Akin and Indiana by Mourdock were considered a little bit over the top ... Mourdock basically said ‘Look, if there is conception in the aftermath of a rape, that’s still a child, and it’s a child of God, essentially.’ Now, in Indiana, that cost him the election.”

Yea let’s all focus on RAPE.....Lets focus
on the political rape of the American people by our politicians... BOTH sides
here a story the liberal media wont post more in the range of Benghazi but less
deadly. NBC will never post this story....the liberal owned self-agenda media won’t
tell the truth, they take a small minded story and blow it up to make the mass
think that the sky is falling. Well friends who cares what a few people say
about what they believe. We need to focus on the real issues of our government’s
corruption both parties fight to see who can screw or rape the American people
the longest faster or deeper. The government has already stolen our children
future there now working on raping our grandchildren future. The MEDIA has
failed us,
SALT LAKE CITY – A Utah businessman accused
of running a fraudulent $350 million software scheme says the state attorney
general arranged a deal to pay Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to make a
federal investigation into the software business disappear.
St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson, who's
accused of billing hundreds of thousands of consumers for products they never
ordered, told The Salt Lake Tribune that newly elected Utah Attorney General
John Swallow set up a deal in 2010 for Johnson to pay $600,000 to people
connected to Reid.
Johnson says be believed that Reid, a Nevada
senator, might intervene in the Federal Trade Commission's investigation.
Swallow strongly denies the allegations and
maintains he only offered to connect Johnson with a lobbying firm. At the time,
he was serving as Utah's chief deputy attorney general.
The FBI and Reid's office would not comment
on the allegations.
Federal prosecutors initially charged
Johnson, 37, with one count of mail fraud. He was set to enter a guilty plea
Friday to two additional charges of bank fraud and money laundering as part of
an agreement with the government.
But that deal fell apart Friday after Johnson
and prosecutors disagreed over the terms. Johnson instead decided to maintain
his not guilty plea and the case is set to go to trial.
If convicted, Johnson could face decades in
prison. He is currently free on a $2.8 million bond.
On Saturday, The Tribune reported that
Johnson provided emails, financial statements, photos, and a transcript of a
recorded meeting with Swallow to the newspaper. Only one email from Johnson was
available on the newspaper's website.
After the Federal Trade Commission filed a
lawsuit against Johnson and nine business associates in December 2010, Johnson
said he asked Swallow to return part of the $250,000 he had paid. Johnson said
he doesn't know if anyone connected to Reid received it.
Both parties have fallen into obscene corruption and don't even CARE what the american people think and want.....only during the election season. We are being duped daily, and it seems few care.
What in the world did he think he was doing bringing this topic back into the news? He has no other, pressing matters he'd like to highlight?
And these people make decisions for us. From how we get our health care to what kind of light bulbs we're allowed to buy. Wow.
According to the GOP and their NRA friends:
Guns don't kill people......people do.
And, conversely, people don't legitamitely rape.....because the victim's body can "shut it down" (conception).....unless they "relax" according to thelatest from a GOP Witch Doctor.
Make no mistake about it. These GOP surrogates are stupid. I'll bet they drink Old English 800 40 oz. beer. And I can't say much for those willing to follow them...........
Tony
did you do some kind of research to back up your thoughts or take it from the msm? You are saying things that must have come from that simple mind of yours. I have seen nothing in the msm that backs up your thinking. I say msm since that is where you get your one sided views other wise you would not write such ignorance. As julia said above its both sides that are to blame for what this country stands for going down the drain
okie58,
If you've noticed.....I didn't address my entry above to Julia. Notice how her name isn't at the beginning??? Did you learn how to enhance your reading skills in High School? Anotherwards, my statement was being stated to the Public. Not strictly Julia in reference to what she said.
The GOP swears people kill people and not guns. Yet, the GOP swears people, as whole, do not strictly perpetrate legitamite rape onto their victims because there are other forms of rape. Otherwise, why else would the GOP claim there are legitamite rapes vs. illegitamite rapes as asserted by making such a statement??? Are you denying the GOP's Akin said that???
You are in denial, Pal.
Wow. The media is waging another war on words. The cunning linguists are using sound bites to rile up those that don't have the capacity to understand the whole of the discussion.
exactly!!
You gonna spin your lies again about MLKjr, Hopeless?
You ran off like a wuss last night when I posted what his WIFE said!
there is nothing cunning about it...just google it and watch what he said
Elliott @ 1.12 Can you show me any legislative language where the term "legitimate rape" is used? Can you show me a state that defines "rape" or "sexual abuse" as being a man victimizing a woman? I thought all states, in one wording or another, define "rape" as an act committed by one "person" against another "person". After reading your comment, and having been a sex abuse investigator for many years, I'm just curious, and you seem to have knowledge I don't. Thank you, always eager to learn new things.
now that you mention it read about another female teacher having an affair with a student. The term rape was not in the story but in the past when its a male teacher the term rape is included so whats the differance
okie...I agree.....accounts of female teachers having sex with students is awful. But apparently to actually be defined as "rape", there must be force used, or some threat of force.
yes i get the idea of rape being a forced act but what about the trust that should be between a student and teacher. just a thought but aren't the students taught the teach is right so if she says its ok do they control the mind of the student just a little? When I was in school it was more of a fantasy to be involved with a teach but we knew better than to try. we had more morals than the youts of today lol
yeah I agree, a female teacher could put a lot of "undue influence" on a young guy. When we were kids we had crushes on a few of our teachers but never thought of acting on it! I think the few teachers I read about who did do that went to jail....hey I'm just thinking, isn't that statuatory rape??? Hmmmm.....I'm gonna have to check that out. Anywhooo, it is WRONG WRONG WRONG. Tho all the late nite comedians had a ball with it....
@ Julia,
Rape need only be without consent from a participant (victim) to be rape. There isn't always a sign of force when sex is without consent from either party..........put your thinking cap on......
Even as a man....I know that....
Tony, I sit corrected.
Is all non-consensual sexual intercourse rape?
I think in the older laws, there had to be an element of force or threat of force.
@ Julia-960715,
If during trial, it can be proven sexual intercourse was non-consenual between the parties. The victim could get the perpetraitor convicted of rape. As a matter of fact, there are many men (a minority and not majority) sitting in prison right now sentenced for years who had consensual intercourse with the alledged victim after having then claimed their consent was never given after sex and had the man convicted by a trial of their peers. Even without any signs of force provided during the trial.
incredible! oh well, they did not want to win elections anyway. that would put responsibility oj them for fixing up the messes they caused
What is it about some of these neanderthal Republicans who just can't let a stupid remark alone? Akin's ignorant and reprehensible statement exemplified the general perception that the GOP is made up of a bunch of bible-thumping morons, which did more for Barack Obama's standing with women than he could have ever anticipated. At least we know that ALL Republicans disagreed and disavowed Akin's stupidity.
On the other hand, what is so admirable, ethical and reasonable about murdering future human beings as an afterthought for irresponsible behavior?
A pox on both houses.
"All republicans disagreed and disavowed Akin's stupidity". Publicly, yes. Privately, the GOP machine continued to fund his election run.
Follow the money.
Both parties back morons to get as many seats in congress as possible. The knife cuts both ways.
FOLLOW THE MONEY you say? I would like to follow MY money, but it has disappeared down the Obama cesspool on its way to Solyndra, the SIMULUS, Tesla, the Chevy Volt, food stamps, Obamaphone, SEIU jobs and other social welfare programs. When you earn more staying at home on the dole than you can working, we have a bigger problem than one bozo of either party saying something ignorant and unenlightened.
logico
you will never change the mind of obama people but I agree so hey tell it like it is
My money started to tinkle away during W's reign.....I lost a lot when the economy tanked, and have taken over managing my investments myself.
Two illegal wars that were never put on the books put a HUGE dent in the budget.
Wages have to come up to a level where it's not possible to make more money on welfare than working.
how does the idea of two wars not on the books even happen. It's not like they could sneak it past the congress they all voted on it. Stop the msm hype it was a two party decision to go to war we do not live in a communist country yet. The wages are going up thats why most companies are going off shore. It was the china free trade agreement that started the trend I believe it was clinton who signed it. say thanks to the man and party that really started off shoring. surprise it wasn't romney afterall he just took advantage of the agreement that clinton was responsible for.
logico
according to dna we all have some neanderthal in us, not much of a cut after all being called neanderthat
wow, you're an idiot we descended from neanderthals.....and ps.. its called accounting practices( google GAAP)....it is quite possible to accumulate debt and not put it on the books! typical conservative.......I mean its like balancing a check book but leaving out the fact that you have accumulated several large debts....it can be done, is it smart no?....but who ever accused Bush and you conservatives of being smart....I am embarrassed for you....seriously just go back an read your last large post
Any woman who is raped should be offered treatment to prevent a pregnancy. She should have the choice to end or allow even the possibility of pregnancy when she seeks medical treatment based on her own beliefs and choice. WHY is this even a question by the GOP leadership? In fact women should have the option of some form of "morning after" pill whether they have been raped or engaged in consensual intercourse. There should be no questions asked.
The morning after pill is the simplest solution to a lot of these problems. The GOP fights against dispersal of this med ..... they want to control women's bodies, no matter what the situation is. The abortion rate would plummet if the morning after pill was readily available, unfortunately many republicans believe the morning after pill IS abortion.
Neanderthal thinking.
Julia, keep terminating your pregnancies. It will be your gift to society.
logico....what an awful thing to say to me. You don't even know who I am. Your mindset and your e-mouth are one of the reasons we can't get down to intelligent discussion and problem-solving on these vines.
Did you go to church today?
julia
I have to agree with you about the morn after pill. its a womans body and she should be able to live as she wants.
I only hope these far right fools keep this stupidity up. Soon Darwin will win out and they will become extinct because or their own mouths.
so this doctor makes a statement based upon medical fact and you are refuting it?? What focus is your medical degree in again?
What is yours in Hope?
Approximately 1 in 15 rapes results in pregnancy, tho the numbers vary. Dont have to have a medical degree to understand that.
Many believe that number is probably higher because a percentage of women don't report rape as they don't want to push themselves through the legal system.
btw, the point is the pubs need to EVOLVE enough to get it through their heads that this is NOT A TOPIC THAT BELONGS IN POLITICS. PERIOD. They only prove, over and over again, their own stupidity by bringing it up and trying to keep abortion a political issue.
Julia...rape is an awful thing, but all this doctor was doing was stating a medical opinion based upon fact and people here are ripping him apart because these facts don't fit with their personal beliefs and/or agendas. There really are no "concrete" facts on the percentage of rapes resulting in pregnancy. Does your "1 in 15" figure (pulled from where?) include men that happen to get raped??...obviously, they can't get pregnant......
Hopeless....
You are debating a medical issue? You cannot even put on a Band-Aid (no, that is not a fund for needy musicians!)
How about spinning your lies again about MLKjr being a Republican. I have even more sources now to prove you are a liar....
Say What.....I understand you take offense at my comments because you were aborted as a baby. Sorry the procedure wasn't a success......
You gonna spin your lies again about MLKjr, Hopeless?
You ran off like a wuss last night when I posted what his WIFE said!
But that is OK, for you see, the whole board knows, beyond question, that you are a liar. And I will continue to post your lies, until you man up.
Just curious, how come your family tree shows no living relatives, and even stranger, no ancestors?
Say What....mental illness is a disease and, as such, I will show sympathy and not further embarrass you. It is a shame that your revered ObamaCare isn't even going to fund your meds......
Still afraid to defend your lies, Hopeless, and instead keep deflecting! LOL! What a pansy!
You gonna spin your lies again about MLKjr, Hopeless?
You ran off like a wuss last night when I posted what his WIFE said!
But that is OK, for you see, the whole board knows, beyond question, that you are a liar. And I will continue to post your lies, until you man up.
Say What?....you are quite amusing and entertaining....not very smart, but I do thank you for the laughs I have been getting at your expense. Now, shut the computer off and go experience some real life. You are on here 24-7....You will probably need glasses when you grow up due to staring at a screen non-stop!!
hey saywhat
this thread is not about mlk jr so stay on topic. I have also read mlk jr was a repub but so what if he was
My hope is we all say "nope"......to Republicans running for office.
oops, of
Akin's remarks were made in regard to the "No Public Funding for Abortion" bill....interesting enough, even 16 House Democrats voted in favor of this bill.
Spin, spider, spin.
Bottom line: an American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology study concluded that the rape-related pregnancy rate is about 5%. "The female body has was of trying to shut that whole thing down" is not the kind of statement someone who might have a hand in shaping laws related to sexual assault should get away with, ever. His electorate was right to throw him out.
hes a fool, but the republican knuckle-draggers that voted for him are even bigger fools
What a lot of people do not understand is that a woman can walk into an abortion clinic and say she was raped and get a taxpayer funded abortion, NO QUESTION ASKED. She does not need a witness, permission from her parents, a police report, nothing. What started this conversation is that so many women were walking into abortion clinics and claiming rape but these number have become much higher than what is being reported to the police, and it all started when the policy changed. Just seems odd.
you are a liar !
desselle,
there is no such thing as tax-payer funded abortions from PP. Kyle even admitted that his statement that there was, was a bald faced lie ("not meant to be a factual statement" was his office's official statement).
Now maybe you are correct about the middle bit, about the reason for getting the abortion but that has to do with people like you actively shaming and humiliating women who get one. They look for a reason most people would overlook getting an abortion for and use it.
desselle -
Check out the Hyde Amendment before you speak.
@dessele...but we do understand an idiot and liar like yourself when see one...
According to that report, Planned Parenthood performed 333,964 abortions during the 12-month period. That compares 332,278 abortions in 2009 and 329,445 abortions in 2010 -- making a three-year toll of close to one-million abortions.
The report also indicates Planned Parenthood had a record year when it comes to funding from the government. An analysis done by the pro-life group, Susan B. Anthony List, shows the abortion provider received a record $542 million in taxpayer dollars by way of government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements.
That amounts to almost half of all Planned Parenthood's budget.
Where do the GOP find these @!$%#s? Seriously? What dregs of society do they trawl through to find these idiots? There seems to be an unending supply of these people with dumbass comments like Akin, Mourdock, and now this clown. Keep it up GOP, 2014 is slipping ever further from your grasp.
So just how many "children of God" rape babies has Akin adopted, raised and put through college?
The conversation is all just another attempt to ultimately have the "in cases of rape or incest" clause be removed from a make-believe exception to abortion. Make believe, because no such exceptions exist. Abortion is perfectly legal in the US and backed by the US Supreme Court..... for WHATEVER reason the woman has.
I just want to thank Gingrey and Akins now for what I think will be a democratic majority in 2014.
You guys are a gift to the democrats.
goodbye republican party !
What the Republican said is simply incorrect. There is no evidence to support the idea that relaxing during intercourse increases the likelihood of pregnancy. In any case, the doctor/politician is only talking about couples who have been unable to conceive in the past. But something like 90% of women over 13 and under 45 can and will get pregnant without delay or difficulty, from any occasion of intercourse, including forced intercourse, that is, rape.
Keep moving. Nothing going on here. Just the TPGOP working on their platform for 2016.
None of this really matters, in the first trimester of any pregnancy any woman can get a legal abortion for any reason.........she has to meet NO ONES criteria.
obstetrician-gynecologist or whatever he needs to have his medical license revoked for not keeping up with modern medicine. He must of gone to medical school in 1912 to hold this bizarre idea.
The GOP party of "intolerance" is self-destructing.!
Cant wait to see what GOP moderates the TP targets in 2 years. How many moderates are left in the GOP? They still must have a couple left. They are dead set on eating their own.
Another dummy from the south shoots his big mouth off. Please vote these idiots out, then again it is the south so I wont expect much. I will keep paying my taxes so red state folks can eat, I just wish they would stop breeding.
