The United States needs a gun reform agenda, or is the extreme NRA objective for the American people to be at war with each other?

2nd Amendment supporters also want sensible gun laws.

We chickens with flesh & blood families out here - will no longer be held $$hostage to the blind devotees of the ever-greedy NRA gun manufacturers.

They are reporting that Obama might bypass congress on gun control and make changes via executive order. I think that would be a big mistake. This would certainly wake up a lot of people, not sure if he wants that kind of attention.

Really don't like this 'WH had to invite...NRA had to accept' line being floated.

From my perspective, the WH "had to" not from a PR perspective, but because they stated they would...seeking input from ALL areas of interest.

The NRA on the other hand made no such indication. Now they TOLD America what it should do. They made a claim about being ready to make a 'significant contribution'. But they made no such claim that they would work with Victims families or any gun safety groups or pro-gun legislation groups...so no, in my mind they did not have to 'accept' the invitation, but they DID, most definitely for PR purposes.

I have no doubts this Administration wants to get this done, but the Admin as well as the NRA knows that unless the Public puts a major squeeze on these hacks they continually put in the House and the Senate, legislation has little to no chance of becoming Law.

2nd Amendment supporters also want sensible gun laws.

I live in Massachusetts - already a regulated state - and I am surrounded by gun owners but I have not met one gun-owning person who is opposed to a reform. They know that have nothing to worry about - no one is going to take their guns away. But they know that the status quo is not working and 20 dead kids is proof.

yes, because the fact that anyone and everyone can purchase a gun from a private sale without any kind of background check is his fault. Right? Chicago's gun regulations are only as good as the loopholes allowed by the federal government.

something to b*tch about, I guess. Don't forget, there are plenty of people who would love to see the Safe Drinking Water Act eliminated because it prevents companies from making a higher profit by not dumping chemicals into rivers.

Nooo. Delinquents are not register gun owners, delinquents buy guns from the black market. Government need to go after gun traffickers , not legal gun owners.

The guns used in Chicago in the gang killings came in from areas that had lesser gun control laws. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-08-27/news/ct-met-gun-trace-study-20120827_1_suburban-gun-shops-gun-laws-gun-violence . There is no study about how much higher the number of killings would be IF guns were more accessible directly in Chicago but the police and FBI presumption is that there would be even more.

With the current gun laws in place, it is difficult, if not impossible to be able to trace the guns to "straw purchasers" in those areas that buy guns specifically with the intent of passing them on to the criminal element.

deliquents do not have to buy guns from a black market when they can buy one from someone else who bought it LEGALLY. That's what private sales do: 40% of the all gun sales.

More than 2/3rs of states have no laws requiring background checks during private party sales which increases the risk of weapons falling into the hands of convicted felons, juveniles or those who are mentally ill.

I'll bet it didn't take you long to figure this out so why is it so hard for some to understand that we make it easy for those who should not have guns to have guns? We don't even make them work for it.

No sensible person wants any gun restrictions. When you look at the direction this country is headed every sensible person is arming themselves the best they can.

I do not own a weapon with a 30 round clip. I still think they are perfectly safe and have no concern about those that do have them. An AR-15 is a point and click weapon capable of mass destruction when properly used. If you want to take the time to master it you should be allowed to carry and defend yourself and others from fools who will try and do you harm.

Some one said God help us. I feel God has no concern for us now. We took God out of everything so why should he help us. Therefore we need firepower to keep the wolfs at bay.

The President has a DUTY to uphold the Constitution and its amendments. This does not give Obama the license to pick and choose which laws he will enforce and which he will ignore.

Unfortunately, however, that is EXACTLY what Obama does ... he has IGNORED existing immigration laws because he personally does not like them and because it "got him votes". Obama has also ignored laws requiring a BUDGET .... because his philosophy is to GROW GOVERNMENT at any and all costs !

Jimbo you do realize that more illegals have been sent back across our border under Obama than any other president don't you? Of course you don't as it doesn't fit your agenda of hatered. You don't seem to understand that we have the strongest ever border security under Obama than any other president. Bush started beefing up the border and Obama has continued that. You are quick to criticize what you perceive as Obama's lax of treatment of illegals but fail to recall that Ronald Reagan gave mass amnesty to all illegals signalling that it is okay to cross our border without impunity. You really need to pay close attention or do some research before spewing YOUR opinion. Sure you have free speech and your opinion counts in a democratic conversation like anyone else's so even if you prove yourself a fool please keep posting as you have a right to do so.

Adler, You CONVENIENTLY ignore Obama's Executive Order that certain classes of illegal aliens (he decided and by-passed Congress) would NOT be sent back, even if they came here illegally.... or did you simply bypass that little tidbit of reality on purpose ? Perhaps, your "brain" is simply "addled" such that you cannot remember Obama's sidestep that just happened ... what ? ... last year ?? Was it the year before ???

Reagan's effort was meant to be a "one-time deal" so your weak attempt at rewriting history is useless.

I noticed you failed to say anything about the required BUDGETS that have never come about under his so-called "leadership". Where are the budgets, addled one ?

Gun violence will not be solved by JUST more control or JUST mental health screening or JUST closing loopholes in the existing laws. It will take a combination of all of those things to begin to make a dent in this problem ... a problem that is KILLING OUR KIDS!

But until we learn to sit down and calmly and rationally discuss things ... nothing will happen.

An example ... I mentioned to a friend we needed to do something to keep guns off the streets. My friend immediately jumped all over me about wanting to take away Second Amendment rights. But nowhere in my comment did I say I wanted to do that ... I am just looking for a way to keep the guns away from those who shouldn't have them (i.e. criminals and the mentally ill). But I was never given the chance to continue with my comments because of my friend's knee jerk reaction to what he THOUGHT he heard me say.

We need to get over this and LISTEN to each other (and quit name calling).

Beth - it has to be a combination of things: close the loopholes that allow private gun shows and gun owners to sell to anyone without a thorough background check; required training to have a gun license; no assault weapons or large ammo clips; better mental health screenings and treatment for those who need it. There is no simple answer but there ARE answers.

We have to do something - everyone deserves better than the mass shootings that continue to take place.

The gun shows in California abide by the laws. There is no way you will get a gun without the 10 waiting period, background check, pass the test, safety class and either purchase a lock for your weapon or prove you have a safe to store your weapon.
