Subscribe to RSSThe widow of civil rights icon Medgar Evers will deliver the invocation at President Barack Obama's second inauguration, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Tuesday.
Myrlie Evers-Williams, who headed the NAACP from 1995-1998, fought tenaciously for justice for her husband, the famed Mississippi activist killed in the driveway of their home in 1963. The man immediately suspected of murdering Evers was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1994, more than three decades after the crime.
"I am humbled to have been asked to deliver the invocation for the 57th inauguration of the President of the United States—especially in light of this historical time in America when we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement,” she said in a statement. “It is indeed an exhilarating experience to have the distinct honor of representing that era."

In 2009, Obama chose Rev. Rick Warren to give the invocation, causing some outcry from the left because of Warren's opposition to same-sex marriage.
The president's formal inauguration will be held privately on Sunday, January 20, as dictated by law. But the ceremonial swearing-in -- where Evers-Williams will give the invocation -- will take place on Jan. 21, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Inaugural Committee also announced Tuesday that Rev. Louie Giglio, an Atlanta pastor and founder of youth faith movement Passion Conferences, will deliver the benediction at the ceremony.

If the speech included all the struggles of all the people instead of fixation on the blacks then it would be worth my time to watch. But as it is, it is my night to cut my toenails and I can't be bothered.

I am just tired of being nice - I am proud of this President. his election was, I hoped, the culmination of many long hard fought battles for justice. I have been shocked, disappointed , and now angry at the outrageous attacks on President Obama. thank you for your kind words or encouragement.

It is impossible to treat a group of people as less than human for 400 years and expect that group of people to act like middle class white people.
Whites are becoming a minority in this country and as that happens hopefully the other groups will be more kind to the whites than the whites have been to former minorities.

Pointing out that someone is black is not racist. What the majority of the right wing posters are forgetting is history, and I don't think the blacks have forgotten, nor should they, since there is still an incredible inequality in this nation.
What happened in the past affects the present. Your grandparents, your parents were subjected to overt racism, and you are unaffected by that? Especially since many of the same attitudes prevail today.
Does racism towards blacks exist today among the majority of whites? Of course it does. The first step is to admit it, then begin to work on it.
This country will have 30% Black Unemployment by the time this clown leaves office; blame Whitey all you want, but Negroes in this country will struggle for a long time once he is back on the golf course every day in 2016...just watch

Isn't it funny that the conservative Republicans of today blame the Democrats of yesterday for the KKK and other racist organizations when they are either too stupid to realize or refuse to recognize that it was their conservative forefathers who did the organizing? The liberals of the day were organizing the busloads of young men and women trying to get equal voting rights for the victims of such racism.
Conservative ideals created this country and will never die.......the liberal agenda will never supercede what built this country....hard work instead of welfare......less government, less foodstamps, more opportunities, stay out of the way of small business.
