Myrlie Evers-Williams, who headed the NAACP from 1995-1998, fought tenaciously for justice for her husband, the famed Mississippi activist killed in the driveway of their home in 1963. The man immediately suspected of murdering Evers was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1994, more than three decades after the crime.
"I am humbled to have been asked to deliver the invocation for the 57th inauguration of the President of the United States—especially in light of this historical time in America when we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement,” she said in a statement. “It is indeed an exhilarating experience to have the distinct honor of representing that era."
The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd explains why Chuck Hagel's road to becoming the next Defense Secretary won't be an easy one.
In 2009, Obama chose Rev. Rick Warren to give the invocation, causing some outcry from the left because of Warren's opposition to same-sex marriage.
The president's formal inauguration will be held privately on Sunday, January 20, as dictated by law. But the ceremonial swearing-in -- where Evers-Williams will give the invocation -- will take place on Jan. 21, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Inaugural Committee also announced Tuesday that Rev. Louie Giglio, an Atlanta pastor and founder of youth faith movement Passion Conferences, will deliver the benediction at the ceremony.

The reason "liberals" / democrats are "so fixated" on skin color is that is all the eye can see when observing the individuals who associate themselves under these titles, while conversely it can be asked 'Why do conservatives have no fixation on skin color and the answer would be that the eye can basically only see 1 color when observing the individuals who associate themselves under the title.
Heck, let's just look back at the video footage from the most recent campaign...you can even through in a few from the 08 cycle. Take the candidates and signs out of the picture and I'm willing to bet that 98/99% of the time, viewing the skin color or lack of in the crowd alone would let you know whose rally you were seeing.
Although said tongue and cheek, it is pretty much that simple.
Liberals, democrats, progressives and socialists treat people differently based on skin color. Thats racism.

What makes America exceptional isn't that we are without blemish, but how we confront our inhumanity and grow towards "a more perfect union." Violence against African Americans is a shameful part of our history. Mrs. Evers eventually won justice for her husband, and for all Americans going forward in doing so, and that is why we honor her.

Medgar Evers believed in rising above the racial hatred and violence and worked toward that end. So maybe it is fitting that the president that has taken us back to racism, division, and class warfare has someone speak that grew up believing we should overcome. Unfortunately the civil rights movement became profitable for some, and like everything profitable no good reason to actually see it end.

I guess I can't make you not think that elliot. That is obviously your prerogative, but I would argue a significant difference between the 2 parties (definitely modern day) is that democrats don't create an environment for color to have to be erased or not recognized to participate whereas republicans create an environment of assimilation...with an overwhelming interpretation coming off as 'if you are not like us...than you are not us'.
That is obviously a generalization, but I do think it is on point. Right, wrong or indifferent, a general Public perception is that the Democrat Party represents [and celebrates] diversity whereas the Republican Party represents a sense of mandatory alignment. At first glance, they may not seem like they are dealing with one another, but 'diversity' is done being squeezed by society. Diversity isn't waiting to be acknowledged, it is here.

I'm black (or half black) and cannot believe people are still using skin color for political, economic and scholastic advancement. We have a black president and still you are talking about skin color.
How about empowering black people to ACHIEVE rather than play the role of victim and make excuses for low test scores and violence in black neighborhoods and become INDEPENDENT rather than DEPENDENT on a government set on controlling them?

As a matter of record it took northern republicans and democrats to form a coalition in order to pass both the civil rights and and the voting rights act. Southern democrats again and southern republicans resisted any attempt at equal rights for all. Since Nixon's southern strategy it is well known that the bible thumpers in the south vote for republicans because of their absolute denial of civil rights for all.

Pigotry said nothing about skin color, so I don't know what he's referring to. In my opinion, most liberals recognize and embrace differences. We are not afraid of them; rather, we think our diversity as a nation is pretty cool. It's one of the best things about the U.S. The article is about Medgar Evers widow, Myrlie, who is going to give the invocation at the inauguration; the only people who might have a problem with this are those who are small-minded and--I guess--unhappy about the progress that we've made as a nation in ensuring civil rights for our citizens.
Racists (not necessarily conservatives!) only feel comfortable around those of their "kind". They are afraid of diversity. They don't see any benefits to learning about other cultures. They are narrow-minded in their approach to the world.

Pat--one of my favorite books is "April, 1865"---about the closing days of the Civil War (although it flashes back to the events that got us there). It makes you wonder how different things might have been if Lincoln had not been assassinated.

So tempus--are you also one of those people who vehemently argue against insurance companies being required to cover contraception? That's a way women can have more control over their reproduction and avoid unwanted pregnancies (and hopefully lower the rates of abortion).
Put your money where your mouth is--if you want fewer abortions, then support contraceptive choices for women. I am sure that you are contributing to local charities that support unwed mothers and provide prenatal care and funds for raising their children. I am sure that you support the new Health Care bill that ensures women have access not only to contraception but also screenings for life-saving procedures like mammograms.
Also, I hope you're not one of those people who say we should lower taxes to the point that school budgets are cut, teachers' jobs are lost, and students suffer because legislators didn't want to fund school districts. I mention education because it is the key for getting out of poverty. Education empowers people.
Hopefully, your concern for the unborn extends beyond the womb.

I don't like ANY babies being aborted, tempus. Neither does President Obama--he just doesn't want to make that choice for women. That you make a racial issue out of it and ignore the efforts that this president has made to help women avoid abortion (by making health care, including contraception, more accessible) is what bothers me.
If minority babies are aborted more than others, this problem doesn't happen in isolation. Many reasons contribute to this situation--level of education, access to affordable health care, and economic status to name several. Lowering the rates of abortion would mean addressing these areas as well. Though I applaud your efforts in giving to charities and donating your time, I would remind you that plenty of pro-choice do these things too. And we vote to support candidates who support women's freedoms.

Although I have to say, so far, I would say the GOP have doubled down on what they plotted and planned to obstruct and undermine on the evening of January 20, 2009. This is a wonderful choice for several reasons, Mrs Evers is the first woman to do a Presidential Invocation, it is happening on Martin Luther King Day and it is the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers ,a brave and courageous man, in the fight for Civil Rights..... we have come a long way as we inaugurate our first African-American President.

I DON'T like all of his policies and I know of no President who couldn't do better. But, I also know of NO President who had to work with a group that took an oath to obstruct EVERYTHING he proposed - as McConnell proudly announced they had done. THAT should make every American angry!
It was not on this thread. It was Pigotry yesterday or the day before. This may not be a totally accurate quote but " I finally have a president in my lifetime I can unconditionally support". Also, I said that may be true and I will give him the benefit of the doubt, but to rip peoples head off who criticize him....?

I'll tell you what I as a liberal am SICK of ... it's people like you telling me I "worship" my President when in fact I respect him and the office. I respected Bush for the office he held even though I couldn't stand most of what he did in office. I worship God and I'm sick of people like you telling me what liberals do and think. You're not one. I'm not anything like you. And for that all I can say is Thank God!

Mikeinoregon - sometimes our response may be a bit strong but you clearly haven't read a lot of what is said about us day after day. The crude and classless comments; the constant harping about "worshipping" the President; the constant comments about living on the government handouts (I'm at work as we speak and spending too much time on this right now); and these are the mild comments. So we may react harshly but is comes from a hate-filled campaign by the far right that hasn't died down since the President was re-elected.
Read JFK2012 #25 post below for the type of people who post against anyone who supports the President. That's pretty typical of the ignorance of the conservatives on this site.
I believe we are probably all good people. We come here to rib the other side and sometimes it get too heated, both sides are guilty and so am I. It would probably be suprising how many enemies on this site could be friends in the real world if politics never came up! *gasp*

I've been reading all of the posts and people are saying "people voted for Obama because he is black" if so, what is wrong with that (although he is a Harvard Grad, Consitiutional Scholar and Law Professor and very capable of doing the job). Hell, people put up with dumb dumb Bush 02 for 8 years which goes to show that whites have been doing it for years with jobs when it comes to promotions, in schools when it comes to scholarships, and in sports, etc. There was a time that blacks was held back (not to long ago as recent as the 60s) because of thier skin color. So deal with it! Blacks and minorities had to deal with this kind of nonesense for over 400 years since they were brought over as slaves. Because there are those who want everyone to FORGET America's negative history, too bad. There are those who wish to remember it so that it does not get repeated.
