“Facing an end-of-the-month deadline, the Obama administration is calling gun owner groups, victims’ organizations and representatives from the video-game industry to the White House this week for discussions on potential policy proposals for curbing gun violence,” AP writes. More: “Biden will meet Wednesday with gun violence victims’ groups and gun safety organizations, a White House official said. On Thursday, he will hold talks with gun ownership groups, as well as advocates for sportsmen. The vice president also plans to meet this week with representatives from the entertainment and video-game industries. The official was not authorized to discuss the meetings before they were publicly announced and thus spoke on condition of anonymity.”
Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly announce the formation of Americans for Responsible Solutions to counter the National Rifle Association in an op-ed on gun control in USA Today. They write: “This country is known for using its determination and ingenuity to solve problems, big and small. Wise policy has conquered disease, protected us from dangerous products and substances, and made transportation safer. But when it comes to protecting our communities from gun violence, we're not even trying — and for the worst of reasons. … Until now, the gun lobby's political contributions, advertising and lobbying have dwarfed spending from anti-gun violence groups. No longer. With Americans for Responsible Solutions engaging millions of people about ways to reduce gun violence and funding political activity nationwide, legislators will no longer have reason to fear the gun lobby.”
“The anti-illegal guns group founded by New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is going on air [today] with a spot that invokes the Sandy Hook massacre and features the mother of the young girl slain in the Tuscon, Ariz., rampage two years ago urging Washington to ‘stand up to the gun lobby,’” Politico reports. “The ad, paid for by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns, will go on broadcast television for a single-day buy on the two-year anniversary of the Tuscon shooting, which nearly claimed the life of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.”
Today is the two-year anniversary of the Tucson shooting.

why hasnt this been laid directly on the gun manufacturers? bypass the smoke and mirror NRA and focus on the commerce and transportation of guns and especially liability insurance for each and every gun. no more loopholes for gun shows. no more military weapons or clips.
lets protect our children and ourselves!
I notice that many journalists support a newspaper's decision to publish the names and addresses of people who filed applications for gun ownership, claiming that, since it's part of the 'public record', it's a legitimate 'freedom of the Press' issue, while ignoring the impact on those involved - I've seen stories about convicts telling prison guards "I know where you and your family live now", and victims in hiding are now getting threatening communications from those who committed crimes against them.
I wonder if they would offer similar support to a newspaper if they published the names and addresses of people who have been convicted of a crime? I suspect that there would be consternation about the 'right to privacy' when ex convicts learn that all of their neighbors shun them because the whole neighborhood now knows "Who they are, where they live, and what crime(s) they committed".
kr-2875346 "why hasnt this been laid directly on the gun manufacturers?"
In what way? Would you put similar 'restrictions' on car manufacturers since cars are responsible for 4 times as many deaths as guns each year?
How about restrictions on baseball bats too because according to the FBI of the 16k+ non firearm homicides the most used weapon of choice was a baseball bat. Firearms were only 11k+ and I gaurantee you the vast majority were commited with illegally owned firearms.
Adirondak or Louisville Slugger?
does that mean you would stop our president from arming the mexican criminals too??
A new White House petition asking President Obama to keep his promise of not taking our guns and to keep his oath of office. If not, to please step down.

Yeah, lets blame the gun manufacturers...why not blame bicycle manufacturers for all the bike accidents which kill/injure 10 times as many peope as guns do...or blame silverware manufacturers for making bigger spoons and forks which contribute to fat people....
Yeah, let's trim some of the other fat off the Constitution while we're at it. The First Amendment can go first because people will invariably say stuff to piss everyone else off or print stuff that should have been kept private in the first place. The Fourth can go too; what have you got in the trunk off your car that you don't want the police to see anyway? A dead body or child porn? You don't need the Fifth if you've done nothing wrong, so you won't mind getting on the stand and saying so. Individual liberties are not condusive to a well ordered society and the cost of freedom is just too high.
What the Bullshiviks won't tell you that the Brits and Australians already had these very same draconian gun laws in place that they're proposing for the US now, when they had they're last mass killing and they were subsequently forced to turn in their guns. They don't want a real solution to the problem of violent mentally ill people roaming free because they need these tragedies to push their agenda forward and that's why they ridicule any security proposal that does not curtail the Bill of Rights.
Don't know much about the law..do you...Guns are a legal product.. I agree...let's protect our children and ourselves..........OWN A GUN....911 IS ONLY 20 MINUTES AWAY..Oh, by the way...courts have ruled that the police have NO responsibility to protect INDIVIDUALS...only the PUBLIC AT LARGE....Now you know why a woman with a restraining order gets killed by her husband. NO obligation to protect HER.
How are the firearm manufactures responsible, or liable? What ever happened to being accountable for your own actions?
Our elected officials need to do something, and in my opinion, what needs to be done is strict enforcement of existing laws. What sense does it make to pass new laws, when those that are committing these crimes aren't adhering to the existing laws? This new legislation only targets the law abiding gun owners of our country.
"The beauty of the 2nd Amendment is that it won't be needed, until they try to take it."
Thomas Jefferson.
"why hasn't this been laid directly on the gun manufacturers?"
Yes, after all we hold knife, baseball, pipe & car manufacturers liable when their products are misused to harm people....... oh wait, no we don't. The person who misuses the tool/object is to blame, not the object itself or whoever made it.
.
Any gun law passed must be inclusive and strong. Jail time must be lengthened to provide a deterrent to gun crimes. As far as the guns themselves, no one, at least no civilian needs a gun whose sole purpose is to kill as many human beings as possible in as short a time as possible. Nobody needs 30 to 100 shots in rapid succession for any other purpose then to kill humans.
WAY TO GO JOHNTHO !!!! its does only take one bullet to kill you, but having to RELOAD.. far to much work!!
i am sure that any psycoitic maniac planning his mass shooting will be put-off by the fact that he may have to RELOAD during the event.. i know everyone thinks amaericans are lazy.. perhaps, as you think, its a good thing..
"YOU know i was going to go on a mass shooting spree killing.. but ill have to relaod .. forget that'' thats WAY TO MUCH WORK!! (and the new law worked.. )
keep those good ideas coming Johntho.. with brillance like yours the world will be a safer place.
This is kind of like the death penalty where a criminal, in the heat of committing a crime pauses and says to himself, "if I kill this person I could get the death penalty", sure they do. If you believe they do I have a bridge for sale, cheap. Criminals will do whatever they can to get what thay want at the time of the crime. If an assault weapon, for example, is simply not available to them, they will not be able to use one and must resort to other methods, methods that might save the lives of innocent victims as well as taking the lives of those who are unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I have two 30 round clips and I haven't killed anybody and I use them becuse it's easier when I'a out target shooting then to reload so your idea is flawed, so how about trying to think alittle more about what you say. And you can fire off just as fast wit ha ten round clip as you can with any of the bigger ones so size doesn't matter, and for all of you people who want to do away with guns , there's several other countries that wont let you have so go take a ride on t hat boat
Jontho...there are thousands of gun laws on the books, most are first thing plea bargained off charge by our worthless lawyers....there are many others just to purchase a gun, go try buying one and you'll see...but theres no laws about regulating crazy people, your supposed to own up if your buying a gun, but would you if that was your goal?....
Johntho, because you don't understand why some sane person would need a high capacity magazine, doesn't mean there isn't a legitimate reason for them. You appear to be allowing the media to influence your opinion based on their propaganda.
When someone beats another person to death, we ask, why did you do this? When someone stabs another person to death, we ask, why did you do this? When some one kills another person while driving drunk, we ask, why did you do this? When some kills another person with a gun, we say, we need to do something about these guns!
Why is it that we only blame the gun in these circumstances, when we blame the individual in any other circumstance?
Clubs and hammers kill more people than guns. In fact, just about everything kills more people than guns... cars, prescription drugs, obesity, smoking, drinking, etc. The media likes to sensationalize and paranoia runs rampant. Johntho: civilians do need guns to protect themselves and their families. If all guns are gone, then what? Crime goes WAY up and the criminals have a free-for-all. It has been demonstrated time and time again in countries around the world, and even in Chicago where a gun ban in the '80s ended up with a 40% spike in violent crime which continued to rise each year.
These gun, bullet, or large capacity magazine bans are CRAP that liberal politicians are pushing. It is totally unconstitutional, bogus, and does not belong in America. This is a stupid knee-jerk reaction to one or two shooting incidents related to drugs. There is a reason why we have the 2nd amendment...to protect ourselves from criminals like the guys that shoot up theatres and kids. We also have our FREEDOM to target practice for fun that millions enjoy as well as hunting. These ignorant and ill-informed gun control idiots are calling for legislation that will punish responsible gun owners and NOTHING ELSE. Criminals will always find ways to get their jobs done through illegal guns, gasoline, or whatever. Bans will not stop these guys...but armed citizens will for sure...particularly an armed citizen who practices with his/her firearm...and he or she would save the day. Amazing how that works huh?
OK, bring your fat belly and a hammer to our fight, and I will bring a large magazine machine gun, and we'll see who is left standing. Geez.
Facts are facts Amy - men typically use blunt instruments (found in the garage) and women use kitchen knives (BIG kitchen knives). And good luck getting that machine gun legally (by the way, machine guns don't use magazines, they use belts). Source: FBI Uniform Crime Report
Amy, you can't own a "large magazine machine gun", it's illegal.
Amy....Machine guns are illegal unless you have mucho dinero, and lots of permits....don't confuse the issue's
Why don't we just outlaw crazy people and get rid of them. I mean, as Timothy McVie demonstrated, a well placed homemade bomb kills WAY more efficiently then a rifle. Let's get to the source of the problem.
Good point and someone with a working brain thats not hoping on the ban gun train
News flash - less that 5% of homicides committed with firearms fall under the once-all-mighty assault weapons ban. Actually it's 4.6%. Well documented study, peer reviewed - but lets feel warm and fuzzy about legislation and talking points for reelections!
If there is going to be a serious debate about gun control and preventing these massacres the first steps are:
A. Let science and education define the debate - look at real numbers.
B. Don't let emotion create B.S. ineffective laws.
C. Get serious about mental health issues.
Until the items above are brought into the debate - nothing will work. Plain and simple. Food for thought - most, if not all of the mass shootings of recent years were committed in "Gun Free Zones" where it is illegal to even have a firearm on the premises. Goes to show how well laws work.
Crack, meth and countless other drugs are also illegal - how's that "war" going?
While I don't believe guns should be banned outright I do believe we need to control what we have in a more responsible way. The reason laws are made is because someone has done something that is very, very wrong and society has greatly suffered because of it. Without wrong doing and propensity to do wrong there would be no need for laws. Unfortunately those who are responsible gun owners are unable to control those who are irresponsible and now must find greater restrictions on guns and gun ownership. Instead of fighting against groups like Gifford/Kelly they should be willing to work with them to ensure those who are responsible gun owners can have their guns for sport, hunting and self protection while, at the same time making sure that guns don't reach those who are bent on doing some mass killing.
There will always be people killing people. When Caine killed Abel mankind began taking lives of others and humankind will continue regardless. Our job as a civilized society is to curtail, stop, greatly reduce and try as hard as we can to eliminte all such acts of violence. A concentrated effort coupled with education and a responsible community can allow people their 2nd Amendment rights without all the killings.
I remember when a murder was considered rare and horrible unlike today where it seems commonplace and apparently not that bad to society in general. Normally I think we should move foreward but in this sense I want to go back to safer times.
Please tell me all about the time when murders were rare, unlike today. LOL
"The ad, paid for by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns..."
I'm really glad to see that Mayors are against illegal guns. I'm sure they have plans to make them so super-illegal that illegal guns will cease to exist.
I hope they will also be against other illegal things, such as drugs, so we can get rid of them as well.
does this mean that Obama will stop selling assault weapons to Mexican criminals now?
If he gets his ban, yes. If not, no.
Did you know that both of the whistle-blowers were hounded out of government service, but everyone else involved has received a promotion?
Yep, and holder is still slithering around the country...
why not give Joe Biden a gun with only one bullet.... he could travel the US dropping into a different school each day to provide security At least he would be doing something to earn his pay!
Joe Biden the Greatest Vice-President the United States has ever had.
ROFLMAO!
You can't be serious.
Biden, the best VP?
Maybe if you were born in 2008.
Thats a scary thought...bite me with a bullet, kinda like barney fife!
Text of the 2nd Amendment
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Who would have thought that a simple one sentence paragraph, would mean so much death and destruction of the lives of so many of the Nations Citizens.
Seriously? You think that murderers are using legally obtained guns? 99.7% (that's 997 out of every 1,000) gun-related crimes are committed by people that had no right to possess that gun in the first place.
The text of the 2nd Amendment is based on an idea.
That "Idea" is the reason why we are even able to have a 2nd Amendment and every other Amendment.
Who would think that a simple sentence could strike fear into our administration...
Bloomberg seems to have changed wording a bit, but his organization's goal remains the same - outright ban oof private gun ownership. Easy to see why more than half of the mayors that joined ended up quitting - what he says publicly and what he does privately have nothing to do with each other. By the way, under his gun restriction movement NYC has seen more criminals shooting at cops than any time in its history - with 5 shootings this year alone (and the year is only 8 days old).
All i kniow is that everyone that wants to ban guns are the same people protected by guns.\
biden and obama want to disarm American citizens to prove that they are in control of everything and everyone. an unarmed America is a target that is what obama wants for his communist agenda. next he will want to be dictator.
The problem is not, as others have pointed out, one of violent and mentally ill people with guns, the problem is one of violent and mentally ill people not getting treated.
All the talk in the world about restricting magazine size isn't going to stop these mental sick-o's from going on murderous rampages any more than restricting forks to two times is going to reduce the weight of obese people; both suggestions are examples of genius of the absurd [google Chuang Tzu]
What this country needs is a serious - which means funded - discussion about treating mental health as a PUBLIC health issue, realizing and recognizing that the mental health field is NOT a precise science or branch of medicine, and that treatments are NOT universally successful, which implies that in some cases, removal of the ill from society at large is the ONLY practical course of action, and then we run into lots of due process concerns - as we should.
Banning guns and high capacity magazines is absolutely a course of action doomed from the start to failure, and the ONLY scenario in which this makes any sense at all is if we view it as a precursor to a total ban, and ultimate confiscation of all firearms in the hands of law abiding citizens. Which is what Feinstein is ALREADY on record as wanting.
OK, there may be one more scenario in which passing Draconian gun control laws makes sense - the government wants to force another revolutionary war, thinking it will win and then assert totalitarian government with ultimate integration of the US into the new world order. THAT scares the hel out of me, because it might just be what some of "them" really do want.
old gaffer...You are right on...i would not put it past our present administration to push the issue to cause an uprising, so he/they could call for marshall law....kinda like what happened in the 30's in germany? hitlers slogan was "forward"....kinda like our potus's..."lean forward"...and pushed by the lib media, theres too many scary parallels between now and then....
more people are killed each year by drunk drivers (just barely) than by firearms (check out the sats rather than calling BS) - why aren't we calling for breathalyzers to be installed on every automobile before they can be started. What is really scary when you look at the crime statistic table is that there are 83-85,000 REPORTED (how many go unreported) rapes every year compared to the 10K drunk driver fatalities and just under 10K homicides by firearms - thats 8 times as many inocent lives and no one is screaming about that. I just wish the NRA would run an ad of every armed citizen who shot an intruder, car jacker, robber and saved thier life becasue they had a legally obtained firearm, permit to use it and knew how to use it - it happens weekly if not daily in this country but the liberal press never publicizes those stories nationally because it doesn't support their agenda - just google robbers shot and see the guy at the barbershop in Detroit, the older gentleman in the internet cafe in Fla -
guesswhat...NRA does print incidents where legal guns stop a crime, but you have to join the NRA and then you'll get the magazine they publish that lists those incidents....
Welcome to the SUCK.
The shooter in the California school used a shotgun, not a rifle or pistol. Now what? The problem with focusing on magazine size is illustrated by this latest example. A 12 gauge pump shotgun with a standard capacity of 5 rounds loaded with OO buckshot is carrying 45, .33 caliber pellets, 9 pellets per round. 5 shots= 45 possible impacts. Shall we just ban everything?
P.S.--Governor Cuomo, the 2nd Amendment is not there to guarantee our right to hunt deer.
It looks today like it is OK for criminals/crazy’s to take the lives of people but it is not OK for the people to take the lives of the criminals or crazy’s.
Why is that?
One of the items that seems to be missing in all this debate about gun control is any call for more severe punishment for those convicted of using a gun to commit a crime, especially when innocent bystanders are injured or lives taken.
It does not help that bleeding hearts feel that whatever cause someone to commit a crime is not at fault, and that it was the result of their upbringing and they should be forgiven, not executed.
I get sick of hearing the news media saying the alleged shooter of Columbine, Sandy Hook, Aurora, its like they must always give criminals the benefit of the doubt, despite the overwhelming amount of evidence. It looks like the fear of being wrong has created more problems that it has resolved, resulting in criminals receiving more protection than victims.
What we really need is speedier trails and executions where murder is involved in the commission of a crime, especially ones involving mass murder.
I have to wonder like in the Aurora case, they finally determined there was enough evidence for the case to go to trial. That should have taken less than 15 minutes not 6 months. And the prosecutors will have 63 days to decide if they want to seek the death penalty, to me that is a no brainer. And the most likely out come will be the guy getting life in prison or a mental institution, like past mass murders.
That in a nutshell is one of the biggest problems with gun control, the lack of effective punishment.
Long ago, when Judas said the money used to buy the ointment to anoint Jesus should have been sold and the money given to the poor, Jesus said, "The poor you will always have with you."
Give the poorest of the poor enough money not to be poor any more, and whoever now has the least money will be the new poor.
Ban so-called "assault weapons" & hi-cap magazines, & whatever firearms are left will be the new weapons of choice for mass killers. And they'll be almost as effective, because it takes only a moment to eject a 10-round magazine & slap in a new one.
So next we'll need to ban those too. Until we get down to weapons with tubular magazines. But it's too easy to reload those between firing, so we need to ban everything except single-shot weapons.
...or maybe by then we'll figure out that banning the tool doesn't work. Guarding schools, malls, & movie theatres won't work either b/c the shooter will simply move to the next unguarded place. What we need to do-- the only effective way to deal with this-- is to arm everyone. If a large percentage of sane, lawful individuals carry firearms, then we'll be effectively guarding everything. The mass shooter will be facing effective resistance no matter where he goes, whether he's using a so-called "assault weapon" or a single-shot shotgun.
The problem with any discussion about guns and gun control start with one basic issue. The purpose of the Second Amendment, according to the written words of the authors of the Bill of Rights, was to provide the means for the citizenry to protect itself not only from oppression and tyranny from outside, but from inside. Wise men all, they knew that governments can over time subvert their original purpose. That is why its there - to provide a "check and balance" that the goverment will have to consider avoid formenting a rebellion amongst its citizens as it legislates. Like it or not, that's the purpose of the Second Amendmant.
Its not about preserving the rights of hunters or sporting users. Every politician at the federal level is on record that they want to ban private ownership of all guns, and merely claim to support the Second Amendment, but yet refuse to retract their prior statements, or acknowledge what the real purpose of the Second Amendment is. If some would believe that we have "progressed" beyond the need for that, then engage in the honest debate that you think it should be struck.
If you believe that the framers purpose is no longer relevant, the Constitution provides for the means to modify or repeal it. For those among our leaders who are standing on the graves of the poor children at Sandy Hook and continue to engage in a deceit and not state their intentions, let alone declare publicly that they support the repeal of the Second Amendment, is both disrespectful to every person killed in any gun tragedy. I don't mind if they have their opinion; I do mind that they are using this as a ruse to get what they have publicly stated they really want.
Unless and until the Second Amendment is repealed, then one MUST acknowledge what its original purpose was, and the logical question that follows is - what kind of arms are suited to meet the purpose, and under what conditions can they be posssessed. That is the real conversation we need to have. You can frame control in that context, but until then what you have is this false argument that black rifles and 30 round magazines, which account for less than 4% of all homicides by firearm, are what we need to "ban". If you were serious about attacking gun violence, would you go for the thing that has the least impact? Certainly not. They are preying on people's emotions to start a process of gutting the Second Amendment, without the courage to go for the real debate - because they know there is no way they could be successful using that route.
Well said. I may plagiarize you.
I F&*^%^#$ng hate Obama and all you panty waste pussies liberal dickheads who support this traitor! WTF u idiots!!!
It is obvious that for the white house this is a chance to push their liberal agenda to go after our second amendment rights. You can see that the focus is on guns. If they were to get their way we will have new gun restriction laws passed and then the matter will fad away until the next tragedy. Does anyone think that this administration is going to call out Hollywood or the music industry for their culture of glorifying violence? Will they ask the media to tone done sensationalizing these tragedies? No, put by god they'll show them damn smug gun owners whose boss.
these giffords talk about spending 20million to help elect someone who supports their agenda but never said a word about spending 20 million to help the mental illnesses that seem to be at the root of it all they talk about spending millions to fight the gun lobby but nothing about helping the sick and no one is saying anything about the responsibility of parenting hell when i was growing up we were taught to respect ourselves and those around us what has happened parents need to help they need to do their job and be allowed to do it i hope you are all ready for socialism because it is being forced upon all of us may god save us all
I Think The President should get to the bottom of the fast and furious scandal. First before going after our guns. But I guess that would be interfering with his under the radar gun control. And putting Biden in charge of the gun task force?...Man that guys been anti- gun for over thirty years. Think gun owners will get a fair shake from him..I don't think so. The American people wants their so called assault rifles and high capacity magazines that's why you cannot find any for sale anywhere in the country their all sold out. That in itself should tell somthing. The more I see of this President trying to insert his will over the American people. The more I am convinced he will be remembered in history as the great divider.
