Back on the job, Clinton presented with football helmet after concussion

One month after she took ill, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton returned to her busy schedule, and will prepare to testify on the Benghazi terror attack that killed four Americans. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received a standing ovation on her first day back at work since she suffered a concussion and was diagnosed with a blood clot in December.

Her staff presented her with two gifts: A football helmet emblazoned with the State Department logo, paired with a football jersey with the number 112 across the back, for the number of countries the secretary has visited during her four-year tenure.

Her deputy noted that Washington is a contact sport.

A photo released by the State Department showed Clinton hoisting the helmet into the air after pulling it out of a box.

State Department

Secretary Clinton holds up a football jersey on her first day back on the job. The jersey, given to her by her staff, has the No. 112 on the back symbolizing the number of countries she's visited as Secretary of State.

a football helmet? Too much protection? RepubliCONs will be disappointed if they won't have Hillary to kick around any more.

While Clinton may make for a fine presidential candidate, President Obama will get my vote again if things take place as one of the elected officials from NY has his way. He is talking about submitting a proposal to abolish the 22nd amendment.

3 in a row and more anyone?

nomoresamo: "3 in a row and more anyone?"

Uhh, thanks - but no thanks. What's sauce for the goose and all that.....in other words, three Obama terms = fine by me. But would you really want 12 years of George W. Bush? Or Mitt Romney?

Getting back to the topic at hand, given the number of concussions still being suffered by both college and NFL quarterbacks, I'm not sure the football helmet was the best choice of protection. But it's good to see Secretary Clinton smiling and having a good time again. She's worked really hard the last four years and even before this last episode, has looked totally exhausted. SOS is a tough job for ANYONE.

Good to see the Secretary back. I'm sure the general consensus from 'conservatives' will be that all parties in that room are co-conspirators to Bhengazi-gate, since they clearly all look like they don't want to be around the SoS, who is allegedly running in sheer terror from speaking to Congress.

Imagine that, now the right-wingers have gone from blaming Susan Rice to blaming Hillary Clinton. They also continue to ignore the facts and just yell louder. As John Kerry said, Congress carries a share of the blame for Benghanzi because Congress failed to adequately fund embassy security as well as having denied the State Department's request for additional money specifically for that purpose.

While conservatives keep pointing the blame finger at democrats over Benghanzi or ??, it might be wise to remember all Americans are to blame to some extent with the anti-tax and anti-government attitudes. Those who keep demanding cuts to government and government spending and refuse to raise revenues to pay for it carry a huge share of the blame for what happened. The so-called fiscal conservatives cannot have it both ways--a strong and powerful government while depriving that government of the funds it needs to be strong and powerful.

This is the problem with your vision. You want to simultaneously maintain your holding "this" Administration accountable as valid, yet at the same time call yourself getting upset when people bring up the same issues within previous Administrations.

Call me names all you want, it doesn't diminish the reality that you quite often find yourself being reacquainted, 'Pot, meet Kettle'.

ozzie, you got that one right. This democrat will never quit blaming Bush 43 because all things, from the deficit and debt, lack of transparency to reducing our freedoms, lead straight back to President George W. Bush and his neocon, VP Dick Cheney. Our economy suffered badly from their inept leadership. It will take many years for this country to recover from the damage the Bush 43 administration inflicted on this country. So, yes, everytime a republican gets on FR and whines about President Obama, I will turn that criticism and blame back to Bush and Cheney. It took a democrat to clean up the mess left by Reagan and Bush 41, it will take President Obama all his eight years, and another democratic president to clean up the even bigger mess created and dumped on this country by Bush and Cheney.

Where was the outrage when the horrifically lax security in Beirut resulted in the deaths of over 200 American Marines in 1983? The security measures were atrocious - a straight shot through the gate to the barracks compund, and under the rules of engagement the Marines were ordered to have no magazines loaded in their weapons and no rounds in the chamber - all of this contributed to the carnage.

Why no cover-up charges levied at Pres. Reagan or VP Bush? The attack was a direct retaliation for the deaths of civilians from American mortar fire, and several military commanders warned of consequential retalitation after the "peacekeepers" chose a side. All the warnings were ignored, and no serious retaliation was ever enacted.

It is obvious that the current crop of conservative posters are more interested in finding conspiracies and placing blame than they are in solving security issues and protecting American lives.

Is asking Hillary some questions about Benghazi considered getting 'kicked around'?

After she originally took 'full responsibility' for what happened it's not rational to expect she should be questioned? This has nothing to do with Republicans- it's about getting the facts laid out.

If anything, she should be stepping up on her own accord to testify. If she has nothing to hide then there won't be any problem. I would expect no less than this from any presidential hopeful for 2016!

Good grief. Can't we just wish Secretary Clinton well, and offer to her a well-deserved "thank you" for her tireless service and personal sacrifice directing the US State Department for the past four years?

That job is perhaps the most physically demanding and thankless position in the US Government. And in return for very hard work and great personal sacrifice the reward is almost always the privilege of being criticized by half of the country, and spoken of with derision, disrespect and incivility.

Has our American dialog become so irreparably polarized and uncivil that we can't even say "Thank you. Job well done"?

I don't see any hope at all for our nation if all we can do is complain, and use the most uncivil divisive rhetoric, ... and then sit back and ring our hands and complain about the uncivil divisive rhetoric. Have we lost all ability for introspection? It's bewildering.

Folks, this isn't rocket science, it's simple math. If you folks honestly wish to change the dynamic of divisiveness in America, ... stop fueling it.

The Benghazi investigation is over, for awhile now. What went wrong has already been decided, and who to blame, named. And they didnt say it was Obama's, or Clintons fault. They blamed it on inadequate funding for security, a couple of people who worked in the State department who didnt do their jobs right, and on the Ambassador himself, for deciding to stay against recommendations.

As for blaming a video, no one blamed the video for the state of security or who was at fault. They blamed it for the reason the terrorists attacked. And there was a video, and it was involved. It just wasnt the only reason. The terrorists used the video to stir up riots all around the middle east. It was posted on websites that would do that, just for that reason. There were a number of protests in several countries that day. I think the terrorists used that uproar, as cover for their attack. So Obama was not exactly wrong when he said it was over the video. He just wasnt all the way right.

Besides, he was under no obligation to say anything. And he can for security reasons, give any misinformation he wants.

This is the most important part, Obama saying it was the video, had nothing to do with who was responsible for security, or was it an attempt to shift blame. Who was to blame for the attack has nothing to do with why the terrorists attacked. This entire whine fest by the right, is a red herring. They are trying to make something of nothing. The ONLY people responsible for the attack, are the terrorists.

For what it is worth, I don't think you are wrong. Changing the social dynamic of a country of more than 308 million people, each with individual points of view, takes time. It is both the blessing AND the curse of our democratic Republic.

I was uplifted by two things last week which speak to the progress we have made as a nation:

1). We observed the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation while the first person of African American descent, and mixed heritage to boot, serves in the Oval Office.

2). President Obama is the first US President since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, to be elected twice by greater than 51% of the American electorate.

One of the things which began to tilt the balance, during the darkest days of Jim Crow, was that the rhetoric and actions of racists became so extreme, so ubiquitous and ever-present, that many in America who held similar but only slightly more moderate thinking began to question the validity of their own thought processes. Many had their senses shocked by assessing their own irrational thinking about fellow human beings, when presented with the images of violence and hate which were associated with that sort of thinking.

Extremism can ALWAYS be counted on to go too far. The extreme voices in America will themselves cause the pendulum to swing back the other direction, because of their extremism. These are the checks and balances of free speech and democracy. The rhetoric has gotten pretty ugly in America (as we see here every day on Newsvine), ... and I think it will get uglier still before the pendulum reaches its stopping point at the Right extreme. But even amidst my doubts I have faith that Americans will eventually cry-out in unison "Enough! That's not acceptable." And those who persist thereafter will be looked at as the side-show oddities which we should already perceive them to be.

Time, and patience, and our own individual refusal to participate in the incivility will change the dynamic.

OBAMA Loves ILLEGALS

Too bad the America people don't have helmets to protect them now that OBAMA and his communists are trying to disarm the good people of the United States so Latin America will have an easier time loading them onto railroad cars for forced labor in Mexico.

So when your Saint Ronald Reagan pardoned millions of illegals signalling those still South of us that it was okay to come here that was okay but when Presiden Obama increases border patrols, deports thousands of illegals and tightens the borders that is somehow favoring illegals? Typical rwnj Fascist wannabe logic. What imperical evidence do you have to prove Obama is a Communist or has any Communists in his Administration. The Helmet was symbolic.....Just as giving Hillary head protection after she fainted and bumped her head...so are having that meeting with all her top Sycophants, Lackey's and Toadies to implement the recommendations of all the things that were needed to protect U.S. Personnel in Benghazi....too little, too late....( A few less Chevy Volts to Belgium and Putting U.S. Marines in Libya instead)

They should have given her the helmet after the first time she fainted and they should have provided the needed Security to Benghazi before the Assault.

By the way, have they finished making the new door signs and desk name plates for all the people shuffled around, given new titles to, and probably a "testifying before Congress" Performance Bonus ????

So many things were done wrong by so many people that we can't pin the blame on anyone....

That is Hillary's Secretary of State Legacy....

These were gifts of love to Hillary from her own staff members. That in itself tells me just what kind of boss she makes when her staff does something as loving and caring for her as they have done. Sounds to me that she would make a wonderful Commander in Chief. She will have my vote.

Backcountry - actually their voting record supports President Obama.

Bush won the Military vote by 16% in '04 and McCain won it by 10% in '08. Can't find specific stats for '12 but it was basically 50/50 after a record low participation amongst military personnel and their spouses.

Yep, lets scrap the Constitution, let obama be king. In 10 years we will all be fighting for freedom, just like they are in Syria. Yep, sounds like "fun" to me.

The national debt will exceed $22 trillion by the time Obama is done ... he will have kicked the American people in the head for 8 years with a debt increase exceeding ALL HIS PREDECESSORS combined !

That's still less than the debt that electing Romney would have left us after four years. He STARTED in the hole with $20 trillion. The two aren't really comparable, though. Obama's spending has been to control the damage that Bush's policies left us with.

It's pretty funny that Republicans only care about the deficit and the national debt when a Democrat is President. When a Republican is President we get told "deficits don't matter." Thing is, they don't really matter -if- we are using the debt in a rational way - paying for growth so that the debt burden becomes a smaller part of the economy as a whole and therefore not onerous. Which is exactly what liberals want to do. And which is why we are called "tax-and-spend commies." As if reduce-taxing-and-increase spending policies have worked so well...

That's still less than the debt that electing Romney would have left us after four years. He STARTED in the hole with $20 trillion.

The debt was 10.6 trillion when Obama took office not 20. He has increased the debt MORE than Bush in HALF the time.

It's pretty funny that Republicans only care about the deficit and the national debt when a Democrat is President.

And it's equally funny that democrats have the exact same attitude when there is a republican President. Proving you're all a bunch of idiots.

Obama's spending has been to control the damage that Bush's policies left us with.

And the fact that the spending was an EPIC failure resulting in the slowest, most anemic, recovery since the Great Depression apparently means nothing to dems who want to continue down the path of failure.

paying for growth so that the debt burden becomes a smaller part of the economy

LOL! Please do let us all know when that happens because according to the CBO it will NEVER happen under Obamas budgeting plan.http://reason.com/blog/2012/10/09/chart-debt-to-gdp-ratio-is-terrible-wors

Also worth noting is that the percentage of our debt held by the public (which now means China) is at the highest level since WW2.

Thanks to Hillary Clinton for 4 years of exemplary and loyal service to her country and the President. I love that her staff thinks so highly of her that they gave her these gifts. Still waiting on the apology from the Republicans who accused her of faking her illness.

In 2008 I supported then-Senator Obama from the start but I came to respect Hillary Clinton as I saw her more as her own person and less in her husband's shadow. I would certainly have supported her had she gotten the nomination and I hope I have the chance to stand up for her as a candidate for the Presidency in 2016.

" ... if you had anything but your obvious public school indoctrination ... "

So my guess is that you didn't go to public school 75th? So your parents had to pay for them to "indoctrinate" you with all of that fear, hate, ignorance, bigotry and superstition that you spew? Wow.

Or did you get that way in spite of you education, or lack of one?

      Huh. Imagine that.

" ... has a towel wrapped around her head and explosives taped to her chest ... "

Not much fear, hate, ignorance and bigotry in that comment. Nope not much at all.

And just to help you with the ignorant part there Jim ...

Infidel is a religious term, defined as ...

        " ... an unbeliever with respect to a particular religion ... "

So if their religion is different then yours, then they are correct. And you ARE an infidel.

But then, maybe you are none of the things that I mentioned. Maybe you are just stupid. And are content with staying that way. Either way ....

          Caption under lead photo,

Secretary of State Clinton holds up a football helmet presented to her by her staff at the State Department during her first back on the job. Clinton suffered a concussion and a blood clot in recent weeks.

You'd think NBC would proof read there articles before posting but I guess this one slipped through.

They left out the word "day", Secretary of State Clinton holds up a football helmet presented to her by her staff at the State Department during her first "day" back on the job.

I am glad to see her back to work and happy! Hopefully the blood clot never comes back or causes her any more problems. She has done so much good for this country.

To those folks above who found fault with my posting,

          A) I'm not a professional writer by any means so what you may have given me a hard time about means nothing, since I wasn't paid to write it. (lol)

          B) I am not the spellcheck/grammar police, as written above which BTW is wrong! There should of course be a space in between the words "spell" & "Check" so guess what goes around comes around huh? (lol) Oh and if I am the spell check/grammar police, do I then get a badge and gun? (LOL)

At least I was trying to help NBC possibly correct their article but It falls on deaf ears here I think.

Lastly, Here's the proper spelling of "Hillary", have a great day! I just did.

The fact that the families of the four dead Americans asked McCain, Graham and the others NOT to politicize the deaths of their loved ones didn't stop them from turning a tragedy into a political witch hunt, now did it, riverman? Allowing the complete investigation to take place, determining what happened and then setting about to ensure that we would do everything possible to prevent a similar tragedy in the future should have been the topic but instead the GOPers decided that it was better to attack democrats and play the blame game than to get to the truth. Senator McCain stood in front of a microphone yelling for answers while skipping the 3-hour, high-level intelligence briefing on Benghanzi that would have answered his questions but the truth is the GOP didn't want answers, they just wanted to blame President Obama and his administration.

Also, was reminded that the mother of one of the other men killed had to ask the Romney campaign to stop using her son's name in stump speeches.

Hillary is a pathetic excuse for a government leader. They were really scraping the bottom of the barrel when they appointed her. Apparently, there were no more community organizers left to really round out the completely incompetent Obama Administration.

It's for sure I didn't vote for a community organizer. Wow, what qualifications for a president.

Sarah said, as she reminded us of another Sarah, that surely would have been just the BEST government leader.....

                " ... Wow, what qualifications for a president. ... "

And Bush had a college GPA of what as an MBA? And how many businesses that he ran/started failed? Or all the other things that his Father and Grandfather had to bail him out on? Or how about the fact(?) that G.W. Bush may very well have been AWOL from the Air National Guard?

Now there's some qualifications for you.

And you have the balls to whine about Mr. Obama?

                Huh. Imagine that.

                Wow.

Looks like Hillary has put back on the weight she would have lost during her "stomach virus." Now it is time to do your job Hillary and honestly and morally answer to the Benghazi murders of 4 Americans on American soil!

I'm giving 100-1 odds Hillary will have severe headaches from her concussion (?) and won't be able to testify. Any takers?

All you Oblameo subjects keep praising "stand by your man" Hillary for the job she has done; please tell me what she has done? O, I forgot she had U.N. secretary Rice take the heat for her.

Hillary did not have any medical problems when she did her interview with Barbarabara Walters for her 10 most amazingly stupid people special. I agree something will happen like a doctor's note that excuses Hillarious from ever testifying, however, the same doctor will do a complete physical on her saying she is healthy enough to run for President of the United States because Obama makes that job look stress free.
