La. Sen. Vitter calls Reid 'idiot' for Sandy-Katrina comparison

Updated 3:15 pm: Twitter has a way of really highlighting the comity in Washington.

Louisiana Sen. David Vitter (R), upset with Harry Reid saying Hurricane Katrina was "nothing in comparison" to Hurricane Sandy and the devastation caused to the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area, lashed out on the social network calling the Senate majority leader an "idiot."

"Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot, this time gravely insulting Gulf Coast residents," Vitter Tweeted, linking to a story in the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Vitter later also released a statement with the same language and adding, "Both Katrina and Sandy were horribly destructive storms that caused real human misery.  And by most any measure, Katrina was our worst natural disaster in history. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused 1,833 deaths and over $108 billion in damage. Hurricane Sandy has caused 131 deaths and $65 billion in damage."

On Friday, Reid said the following on the floor, urging passage of Sandy funding:

"I really do believe it is important that I have the record reflect the reason we have gotten as far as we have on Sandy is because of the senior Senator from New York. It is too bad that it has taken so long. When we had that devastation from Katrina, we were there within days taking care of Mississippi, Alabama, and especially Louisiana--within days. We are now past 2 months with the people of New York and New Jersey.

"The people of New Orleans and that area, they were hurt but nothing in comparison to what happened to the people in New York and New Jersey. Almost 1 million people have lost their homes; 1 million people lost their homes. That is homes, that is not people in those homes. So I think it is just unfortunate that we do not have the relief for New York and New Jersey and the rest already. It has to be done. We have to meet the needs of the American people when an act of God occurs."

The Times-Pic writes:

"Sandy devastated some of the nation's most populated areas, but it didn't come close to Katrina. Hurricane Katrina, and the flooding that followed when federally built levees failed, killing  1,833 and causing more than $145 billion in damage. Sandy has been blamed for 120 deaths and over $80 billion in damage."

Monday afternoon, Reid released a statement saying he "misspoke" on Friday:

"In my recent comments criticizing House Republicans for threatening to betray Congress' tradition of providing aid to disaster victims in a timely fashion regardless of region, I simply misspoke. I am proud to have been an advocate for disaster victims in the face of Republican foot-dragging, from Hurricane Katrina to Hurricane Sandy, from fires in the west to tornadoes in the Midwest. I have worked hard with Senator Landrieu to ensure that the people of the Gulf Coast have the resources they need to fully recover, and I will continue to advocate on their behalf until the region is fully recovered."

The House passed a $9.7 billion Sandy recovery aid package Friday, which the Senate took up and passed by unanimous consent. The House is expected to take up another $51 billion aid package as a result of Sandy Jan. 15th, after it returns from recess.

Katrina was 10 times worse than Sandy. But there are 10 time more libs living on the east coast where Sandy hit. Enough said!

Yes, Reid's an Idiot. A Shambling Little Clown who has just said "No." to everything the House has passed for 2 years, with no consideration of anything, and has never passed a budget? or not in several years.

He's a far left Radical who does a soft-spoken, mellow routine for the cameras, and then obstructs anything the GOP passes, with no compromise on anything.

Because we have a rotten far left media, the House gets all the blame for everything, but Reid never brings any GOP House to the floor for a vote even. Ever.

Some of the idiots on here are no different than the politicians. A lot of lies and yelling about nothing, while the people of American wait in disgust.

Vittner is a slutty adulterer who has no right to even be in the U.S. Senate. If he had had any honor at all (which he proved that he did not have), he would have resigned from the Senate. But, Republican "family values" bigots can commit whatever sin they choose and still feel entitled to throw stones at Democrats. What a total jerk.

And did Clinton do anything nearly as bad as Vitter? Bill Clinton would be elected again if he could run, so watch your mouth.

It seems that being crass, ignorant and vulgar has become the Republican elected officals' trademark. Where is the civility, respect and class that should be part of the public service? In their defeat, they let themselves lose all control and perspective instead of learning from the process. The trend started with Palin and has gone downhill ever since. There has to be something deeply wrong with a group that marginalizes great Americans like Olympia Snowe, Jon Huntsman and Senator Hagel but unleashes lesser minds on a brutal slash and burn campaign that can only hurt their own.

I think you missed a typo, you just described most of the Democrats! Respect, civilty and class are just the things that just seem to fall well short of Democrats.

There are no excuses for making detrimental remarks about the mentally deficient. Harry represents the lower IQ very well in congress. They even let him be in charge of the senate to make him feel important and relevant even though we all know that isn't true. I think its cute when he trys to hug Nancy Pelosie and she pulls away as if disgusted, what a cute couple!

Vitter would know exactly about being an "idiot". After all, he was the one who solicited high priced prostitutes, and got a standing ovation from the rest of the republican senate when he returned. This the guy who ranted against others for being immoral and standing out on top of the muck mountain championing the "sanctity of marriage".

As for comparing disasters, forget it. All will be dwarfed if that "Yellowstone super volcano" ever triggers.

          Reply#787 - Tue Jan 8, 2013 8:07 PM EST

Forget Vitter. Concentrate on the great mysteries of our time...like:

Which came first? the chicken or the egg? and

Who is the biggest problem America has? Obama or Reid?

Sounds like Vitter needs his diaper changed again. Call a prostitute to help change him.

            Reply#789 - Tue Jan 8, 2013 9:21 PM EST

Reid probably did make an idiotic statement. Just to be diplomatic, it would have been kinder for Vitter to respond with that phrase - "Sen. Reid made an idiotic statement" - rather than saying Reid is an idiot.

Then it is not a personal attack, just a criticism of his speech.

              Reply#790 - Tue Jan 8, 2013 10:52 PM EST

Is this what we pay these people to do? Call other public officials "idiots" and say "go F yourself" to them? I'm sure that the little group that despises Harry Reid are eating this kind of juvenile stuff up, but how constructive is name-calling? That is NOT what we PAY these people to do. I don't understand why those who constantly b!tch about how our tax dollars are spent don't see the obvious waste in this kind of behavior. Even if you think the "thrill" of the insult is well worth the money, it still has accomplished nothing, and has changed nothing in DC. This kind of crap has transformed our once relatively respectable governing system into a joke, into noting more than the fake, tacky political version of "professional" wrestling. Thanks a bunch, again, rightwingers.

I like Reid but this was just a stupid thing to say. When a whore peddling sleaze bag like Vitters can score points off you then you know you messed up badly.

Like I said before the Sandy money was all made up by the liberals to get everyone made at the republicans again. Fema had enough money to cover the Sandy situation well into 2013. All this legislation w3as for was to replenish Femas coffers. See I am a democrat and say something without calling anyone names. Now liberals can't do that because they think they have to tear things down in order to get their point across. How childish.

Senator Vitter, on the other hand, is an idiot, a coward and a pervert. He should have resigned in shame after the prostitute scandal, but Republicans, the party of "morals", has this depraved human being spewing insults to his betters. He was only saved by the eternal Republican hypocrisy and the statue of limitations for his crimes. Where is Weiner? He had the decency to resign while Vitter had the temerity to lie and appear humble because he has been schooled by his party to get away with murder, so to speak. This disgusting human being dares to rise his head and insult someone else. A then Republicans wonder why they are going the way of the dodo.

Harry Reid is an idiot. And a liar, a deadbeat because he hasn't done his Contitutional required job in over three- years, has taken payoffs from the Vegas casino owners (Oh yes he has), and pretty much looks out for Harry. You can like the miserable dog, but I keep hoping the sonofabi---doesn't wake up, or better yet, falls and breaks his turkey neck.
