La. Sen. Vitter calls Reid 'idiot' for Sandy-Katrina comparison

Updated 3:15 pm: Twitter has a way of really highlighting the comity in Washington.

Louisiana Sen. David Vitter (R), upset with Harry Reid saying Hurricane Katrina was "nothing in comparison" to Hurricane Sandy and the devastation caused to the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area, lashed out on the social network calling the Senate majority leader an "idiot."

"Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot, this time gravely insulting Gulf Coast residents," Vitter Tweeted, linking to a story in the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Vitter later also released a statement with the same language and adding, "Both Katrina and Sandy were horribly destructive storms that caused real human misery.  And by most any measure, Katrina was our worst natural disaster in history. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused 1,833 deaths and over $108 billion in damage. Hurricane Sandy has caused 131 deaths and $65 billion in damage."

On Friday, Reid said the following on the floor, urging passage of Sandy funding:

"I really do believe it is important that I have the record reflect the reason we have gotten as far as we have on Sandy is because of the senior Senator from New York. It is too bad that it has taken so long. When we had that devastation from Katrina, we were there within days taking care of Mississippi, Alabama, and especially Louisiana--within days. We are now past 2 months with the people of New York and New Jersey.

"The people of New Orleans and that area, they were hurt but nothing in comparison to what happened to the people in New York and New Jersey. Almost 1 million people have lost their homes; 1 million people lost their homes. That is homes, that is not people in those homes. So I think it is just unfortunate that we do not have the relief for New York and New Jersey and the rest already. It has to be done. We have to meet the needs of the American people when an act of God occurs."

The Times-Pic writes:

"Sandy devastated some of the nation's most populated areas, but it didn't come close to Katrina. Hurricane Katrina, and the flooding that followed when federally built levees failed, killing  1,833 and causing more than $145 billion in damage. Sandy has been blamed for 120 deaths and over $80 billion in damage."

Monday afternoon, Reid released a statement saying he "misspoke" on Friday:

"In my recent comments criticizing House Republicans for threatening to betray Congress' tradition of providing aid to disaster victims in a timely fashion regardless of region, I simply misspoke. I am proud to have been an advocate for disaster victims in the face of Republican foot-dragging, from Hurricane Katrina to Hurricane Sandy, from fires in the west to tornadoes in the Midwest. I have worked hard with Senator Landrieu to ensure that the people of the Gulf Coast have the resources they need to fully recover, and I will continue to advocate on their behalf until the region is fully recovered."

The House passed a $9.7 billion Sandy recovery aid package Friday, which the Senate took up and passed by unanimous consent. The House is expected to take up another $51 billion aid package as a result of Sandy Jan. 15th, after it returns from recess.

Comparing catastrophes is a fool's game ... sadly Reid played the game. Begs the question from both sides ... where have all the Americans gone?

I agree, black. I like Harry Reid but sometimes he goes just a little too far. I understand he is passionate and trying to make a point, but to compare what happened with Katrina, which was despicable on so many levels, to what happened in the Northeast is not right. Each region sustained horrific damages, including lives. Having said that, I think it is also despicable that it has taken two months to even get a resolution on getting monies to the communities affected in the Northeast when aid came to the victims of Katrina in a matter of less than two weeks. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Jeez. A simple incorrect phrase in the midst of an unscripted statement is no cause for this reaction. It is crazy to parse with a microscope every word said in every debate, and as soon as a few of them strung together sound bad, we get all this criticism! How many stupid or inaccurate things have any of us said in the last week?

Political criticism ought to be focused on actual positions and meanings. The left doesn't criticism Vitter for an incorrect phrase; we criticize him for his clear hypocrisy in touting family values while using the prostitution services of the famous Washington DC madam.

The fact that the right has to resort to making mountains out of molehills shows that Reid is a pretty decent and good and smart guy.

A far greater amount of civility and decorum is needed in D.C.

There is no place for this type of nonsense. We recently had Boehner dropping the "F" bomb and now this. These people are supposed to be representing all of us to the country and the world.

Sad.

Reid cared enough for the victims of Sandy to allow the bill to be stuffed with pork. Stupid comments from Reid, which are nothing new for one of the most corrupt politicians in Washington. Reid can't find the time to pass a federal budget, but he never misses a chance to play the blame game. If ever there were a reason for term limits in Congress, Harry Reid would be on the poster. But if Reid were to leave Washington who would ensure that the next Cowboy Poetry Festival in Nevada got funded by taxpayers?

Senator Vitter completely neglected to mentioned WHY we had not provided help to New York and New Jersey. The Republican controlled House had not taken up the bill to fund the disaster relief.

I believe Senator Reid was thanking the New York Senators for calling attention to the inaction by the Republican House.

Why do elected officials have such a big problem telling the truth about a situation. Both of these events were natural disasters but we also have a self inflected disaster in Sandy's case.

Rick said:

People, PLEASE go have a look at this bill before you decide if it's pork:

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr1eas/pdf/BILLS-112hr1eas.pdf

HR1, as originally passed by the House, was not a 'Sandy Relief bill' it was originally for allocating funds for all Departments of the Federal Government. The opening paragraph of HR1 says:

In the Senate of the United States, December 28, 2012. Resolved, That the bill from the House of Representatives (H.R. 1) entitled ‘‘An Act making appropriations for the Department of Defense and the other Departments and Agencies of the Government for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2011, and for all other purposes.’’, do pass with the following AMENDMENTS....

The Senate made amendments to the original bill that would authorize spending on disaster relief for EVERYONE affected by a disaster in 2012 and sent it back to the House on Dec 28.

So adding funds to the Dept of Agriculture for the damage done to AK fishery equipment from debris washing up from the Japan tsunami is not pork. The damage done to gulf-coast fisheries is not 'pork'as they were damaged by Hurricane Issac earlier this year before Sandy.

So adding funds to the US Army Corps of Engineers to fix the Smithsonian roof is not pork because that crack has been there since the East Coast earthquake (another disaster), and while the US ACE is fixing the Washington Monument, they can fix the Smithsonian roof at the same time.

For many of us in NJ, Sandy was our Katrina...or, Lord willing, as close as it ever could come. We are not accustomed to weather like that! Katrina set a new standard in "devastation by hurricane/tropical storm." Comparisons will be made until the next big one...

There is no reason to lambaste Mr. Reid!

@noncoms

When that statement in question defies all common knowledge on the topic, then YES, the politician uttering his nonsense needs to be called on it and ridiculed.

I don't care which party they belong to, I do not tolerate so-called educated men, while holding a public office, to make such grossly false statements, then turn around and try to defend their position.

It's not a matter of opinion, either. By every statistical and scientific measure we have, Sandy, as devastating as it was, was not nearly as devastating as Katrina. Katrina caused a lot more damage over a larger area, and many more lives were lost as a result of that storm.

They are certainly comparable, but to say that Sandy was worse, requires one to be willfully ignorant of what happened during and after Katrina. I live one the east coast hit by Sandy, and I can say that Katrina still tops it.

Meteorologists have said that Sandy was unprecedented, that we've never once had two storm fronts collide and form a superstorm before. They'll be studying the thing for decades. Katrina set a new standard for hurricanes/tropical storms, but Sandy was the first 'superstorm'. It's been postulated that it could theoretically happen (anyone remember a little movie called 'Day After Tomorrow' where three storm fronts merged to form one huge storm that threw us back into a semi-ice-age?) but it has never happened.

Sandy set a new standard for superstorms in the same way that Katrina set a new standard for hurricanes/tropical storms. I don't really see that a comparison between the two can be made since they were both different meterological phenomena.

And in any case, what we call it or who got help first isn't important. What IS important is that we make sure those who need help get it!!

Harry Reid is simply an a$$hole ! First of all, former President Bush was loudly criticized for not having FEMA ready for the Katrina task. Now, Harry Reid says relief to the South was effected within a few days ?

Then we have Sandy and the devastation in that part of the country. Obama got tons of favorable publicity for the quick response, and many believe the "quick and decisive" leadership of Obama (please pardon me while I hurl in the direction of Harry) helped him get re-elected. But now, Harry seems to be contradicting those thoughts of quick and decisive action from FEMA ! Is he now telling us that FEMA failed ? Is he now admitting that Obama's response was ALL show and little, if any, substance ??

Sorry Harry ... you just can't have it BOTH WAYS ! Again, Democrats contradicting Democrats .... LOL !!!

I lived through the storm and was foruntate to not suffer like many at the shore or in New York. I also feel bad for those who are still dealing with lost homes, insurance and FEMA. But theres really no comparison to the devastation of Katrina.

In one respect Reid may be correct Katrina wiped out 300,000 homes while with Sandy just NY and NJ alone account for at least 600,000 homes lost (as of November reports) also Katrina caused power outages to around 800,000 while Sandy knocked out over 2.2 million users. Dollar wise Katrina will probably prove to be way costlier. My point is rather than Vitter being insulted by anyone implying that the South was not hit hard by Katrina- it would be musch smarter for him to recognize that the NE was badly hit by Sandy ( the same liberal NE that probably donated a ton of $$ to Katrin telethons - where are the same for Sandy Victims).

It seems that Red States - LA, MS, etc got lots of support, relatively quick congressional action, but Blue States - NY, NJ get short shrift.

"When that statement in question defies all common knowledge on the topic, then YES, the politician uttering his nonsense needs to be called on it and ridiculed."

When a politician is basing policy on incorrect knowledge (like the Republican congressman who serves on the House Science committe calls evolution a "lie from the pit of Hell") then he deserves to be called on it and ridiculed. The point is that this guy, who plays a critical role in how the federal government addresses scientific matters, bases his scientific beliefs on absurdities.

When someone indulges in incorrect hyperbole (we need to send money to Sandy victims because this is the worst storm in history), it is not a big deal. The point is he is trying to get money to Sandy victims because Sandy was bad.

If you can't understand that, you dont understand why we on the lef think that the right is populated by sheep.

From the article above:

"Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot, this time gravely insulting Gulf Coast residents," Vitter Tweeted...

Courtesy of Wikipedia:

In early July 2007, Vitter's phone number was included in a published list of phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, a company owned and run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the "D.C. Madam", convicted by the U.S. government for running a prostitution service.

Why is Vitter still in the Senate?

I'm sure all our 'Family Values' Republicans have an excellent answer.

The movie " Day After Tomorrow " was based on the Halloween storm, which was a NOR-Easter. It later became a hurricane off the coast of Canada. It was the first one they ever saw let alone had. The three storms came together over N.Y. and Long Island. I know because I was living along the South Shore of Long Island at that time.

When they are elected, the money seems to flow freely to the south. Texas most of all. The South wants this country to fail, Just because we elected a black man. S. Carolina is starting trouble again, along with Tx, LA, Mis, AL, GA,AZ. Just about the same old State that started the Civil war the first time. All this talk about leaving the Union. The Mexican Drug Cartels would take over Texas so fast. Then those dumbasses would be crying for us to help them again. Remember the Alamo. Look at Eric Cantor, You can see he hates this country, He stabs the speaker in the back every time he can. Vitter is a Whore monger, but in the south that's excepted as the norm. Not exactly pork. Relief for several other disasters was also contained in this bill.

Reid was wrong here. A simple apology to the people of Louisiana and Mississippi (not to that pimp Vitter) is in order. But Katrina did damage in other places as well including Florida as it looped back around. Those damage figures likely also include the Carribbean.

A terrible time that was, my girlfriends family lost their homes and possessions to Ivan in September '04 and when Katrina arrived in August of '05 they were all but forgotten. To this day they freak out at any sign of tropical weather. And they are not alone, PTSD is very common for these victims.

Have lived in the Deep South most of my life. I have to say (sadly) that your analysis is not that far off. The idea that we would move past the racism of post-Civil War Times and into the 60's was a noble cause and many people sacrificed a lot to get some semblance of equality. But the world does not change in a generation or two and the prejudice down here is deep seated. I think it says enough that South Carolina just put Tim Scott in the Senate and although he is black he does not represent his own community.

But I don't think the Democrats have a prayer of retaking the House in '14 or for some time beyond. The gerry-mandering the GOP did at state levels here has brought some pretty horrific types to Washington and it will likely keep them there. Their desire is to kill the federal government and we have seen the opening salvo's. They simply do not wish for America to succeed unless they are in power. They have shed the term "compassionate conservative" because public misery is essential to their objectives. There is no longer any pretense.

If one chooses to live next to the ocean then the weather threats are known prior to one settling there. I gave to the Hurrican Sandy and Katrina relief funds. I am just not sure how these funds were distributed, if at all. People who live near/next to coastlines know what can happen. Just like people who live in the mountains with all of the drought and wildfires. You cannot control weather nor the destruction it can bring. I cannot afford to contribute to every natural disaster that comes along. I wish I could but I can't. If I were a victim I would learn from these disasters and choose not to rebuild in vulnerable areas and the coastlines are certainly in the path of future natural disasters.

"Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot, this time gravely insulting Gulf Coast residents," Vitter Tweeted, linking to a story in the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Amen. Only an idiot would pit the the catastrophe of one set of Americans against the catastrophe of another set. This is the divisiveness I see daily from this group though. Just a couple days ago Nancy Pelosi said that Republicans were "Anti government" and insinuated that they are some sort of treasonous rebels for not rubber stamping a rise in the $16+ trillion debt limit. So congress can't even question the wisdom of going more than $16 trillion dollars into debt without being labeled as "anti-government traitors"? At some point, folks, we are going to settle up. It will either be on our terms or the terms of our creditors. But the longer we wait, the worse it will get.

I would not call Reid an Idiot...more like uninformed by the comment embedded in his speech that I have cut and pasted here.

"We have to meet the needs of the American people when an act of God occurs."

Act of God is a phrase concocted by insurance companies to place the blame for natural disaster on a God of Love who has nothing to do with storms that kill people. There is another force at work who wants to destroy and kill but he is not God. Not to mention the daily display of selfishness by humans toward themselves and others. These are the most corrosive lies in the world...those of blaming a loving God and holding on to unbelievable selfishness by most of humanity. Reid and the Congress display their selfishness every day for the world to see and yet no one calls them on it...interesting.

so the lefties here are again blaming republicans but it is worth asking why it took harry so long to get a bill brought forward in the senate. if you look it took him about 6 weeks and took the republicans about 4 days to send an alternative to the senate which did not include extraneous funding for non-sandy related activity. the non-sandy stuff needs to be added to the budget that reid will present for consideration as is his duty as the senate leader.

This WAS the budget! Did you check out the link I posted above??

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr1eas/pdf/BILLS-112hr1eas.pdf

HR1, as originally passed by the House, was not a 'Sandy Relief bill' it was originally for allocating budget/funds for all Departments of the Federal Government.

The original version of HR1 had no funds allocated for disaster relief. The Senate made some changes, added amendments to the original bill that would authorize spending on disaster relief for EVERYONE AFFECTED BY A DISASTER IN 2012 and sent it back to the House on Dec 28.

The bill that was voted on on Friday was simply extending the funds that the federal government needed to continue payouts to affected citizens under the National Flood Insurance Policy. The budget bill that allocated other disaster relief funds is still on the table and has not been called to a vote by Speaker Boehner despite the fact that it had Senate approval and majority House approval(and presidential approval as well.)

PLEASE GO READ THIS THING FOR YOURSELF BEFORE YOU CALL IT PORK!!!!

So adding funds to the Dept of Agriculture for the damage done to AK fishery equipment from debris washing up from the Japan tsunami is not pork. The damage done to gulf-coast fisheries is not 'pork'as they were damaged by Hurricane Issac earlier this year before Sandy.

Adding those things to an EMERGENCY RELIEF bill that everyone wants to be rushed through post-haste in the middle of the night MOST CERTAINLY IS PORK!!!

ANY SPENDING that is not needed immediately for the relief of those affected should be put into a separate bill and PROPERLY DEBATED AND SCRUTINIZED!! There is NO GOOD REASON to rush through money that will not be spent for months; some of that 60 billion won't even be spent THIS YEAR. So why don't those things need to be discussed and vetted?? People who are bitching about this bill being delayed have NO GROUND to EVER bitch about wasteful government spending EVER again!

The fact that Reid then came back and stated he misspoke and then AGAIN bashed the Republicans just goes to show lack of leadership all over. Rangel- now there's a man who should have helped. He has plenty of money and hotels/condos in the Caribbean. Let him send some folks there to live and work- oh, but wait. We can't do that.

Vitter, associating with prostitutes. Kinda sounds like Clinton. Oh, but wait. She wasn't a prostitute.

Vitter is just as clueless- Katrina, as spoken by many relief workers, was not only faster but a lot of the stuff got held up simply because you could not GET into or out of New Orleans. It took weeks for the water to dissipate enough to be able to effectively rescue people. I am not defending either side but let's just be honest both directions. Both sides push things through full of BS and fluff. Now that the American people are calling Congress on it, it so happens that the Republicans are there so they are easy targets.

If the other things didn't get repaired before- example being cracks in the Smithsonian and all the other malarkey- then it seems to me that something that important should've been pushed through when there was a Democratic Congress instead of now.

Bless all of us, regardless of religion or party lines. This is going to be a rough 4 years.

Stupid comments from Reid, which are nothing new for one of the most corrupt politicians in Washington. Reid can't find the time to pass a federal budget, but he never misses a chance to play the blame game. If ever there were a reason for term limits in Congress, Harry Reid would be on the poster. But if Reid were to leave Washington who would ensure that the next Cowboy Poetry Festival in Nevada got funded by taxpayers?"

Right on the money.

Vozrations quote "Not exactly pork. Relief for several other disasters was also contained in this bill"

Vitter is an idiot. Sadly, the lives that were lost are gone and there is nothing we can do to bring them back. We cannot wave a magic wand and undo the devastation both storms caused. Yes, Katrina was more costly in terms of damage to physical buildings, roads, etc. What these number do not include is the cost in real dollars of work that had to be put on hold (and in some places still is) for weeks of the center of the financial world and its surrounding areas, which are very densely populated. The hourly wages of NYC, NJ, CT, RI, DE, NC, etc., employees FAR exceeds those of the low population density & low pay areas of LA, MS, etc. It is not even close. Therefore, it is of great benefit to EVERYONE in the country to get this area back to work as quickly as possible. Moreover, LA, MS, etc., get much more of their dollars back from the federal government than they put in. NY and NJ subsidizes states like LA in this way. It cracks me up when these southern states want to secede from the nation after taking their socialist dollars from the governement. What hypocrites they are. They should have kicked Texas to the curb. For someone who keeps the word socialist as one of the top words in his vocabulary, Vitter should be called for what he is...a hypocrite.

Bart Conner

For all the folks complaining about Sandy bill pork, what would some of those specifics be...or are you just restating GOP talking points?

Well there's the 1.3 million for the "Procurement of ammunition-Army", 150 million for fisheries in Alaska, 820 million for dredging projects all across the country and 60 million in aid for Japan relating to their tsunami. And that's just a drop in the bucket. Call me crazy but I'm pretty such Hurricane Sandy didn't have much of an affect on Alaska or Japan. Also large parts of the bill deal with making improvements to various infrastructure projects, some of that may be money well spent but it is certainly not "emergency" spending that can't be dealt with separately at a latter date.

Maybe you should worry more about the talking points YOU are being spoon-fed.

Let's address those one at a time. First keep in mind that the bill is supposed to cover EVERYONE affected by a disaster up until Dec 28, 2012. now, knowing that:

Amtrak: service up and down the Northeast corridor was disrupted because of the storm, wind blew down power lines, downed trees across the tracks, flood waters flooded parked railcars and flooded engines. So yes, I'd say they were affected by a disaster.

Homeland Security: You do realize FEMA is a branch of Homeland Security, right? So is the Coast Guard. Coast Guard vessels sustained damage from Sandy, and FEMA is handling and coordinatng disaster relief efforts. Not to mention which, immigrants living in the affected areas may now have to apply for new sets of paperwork if their old sets were lost in the devastation, which also falls under Nomeland Security in the USCIS division. So I'd definitely say they were affected by a disaster.

Smithsonian: Is a public museum as well as being a repository for some of the US's greatest national treasures. These funds are going to the US Army Corps of Engineers, who, in addition to using the funds to fix roads, bridges and infrastructure, will also be fixing the Washington Monument and the roof of the Smithsonian since the crack has been there since the Est Coast earthquake (and as every homeowner knows, the longer you delay fixing a small problem, the worse it's going to get(and the more costly.)

The reason for Reids criticism of republicans was that he couldn't get his pork to his promoters. There was no reason to rush a bill through the house because there was enough funding through the middle of January. It is poor administration by the responsible agencies that is the problem. The President said there would be no red tape, but, there was nothing but red tape and that is still the case today. THIS WAS NOT AN EMERGENCY RELIEF BILL.

PLEASE GO READ IT:

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr1eas/pdf/BILLS-112hr1eas.pdf

HR1, as originally passed by the House, was originally for allocating funds for all Departments of the Federal Government.

The House sent the Senate a budget bill for all departments of the Federal Government. The Senate looked at it and saw no extra allocations for the Departments dealing with all the natural disasters thus far this year.

So the Senate asked for a rundown on what was needed from all over the country, from all states affected. When they had that total they looked at all the funds the House allocated to different departments and agencies, consulted various subcommittees and departments to see what they actually needed and came up with about $60 billion that various departments, like the Department of defense, said they didn't really need and the money could be better used to help disaster victims. The Senate made those changes, then gave the amended HR1 to the House Dec 28.

It had Senate approval, Presidential approval, and majority House approval. Speaker Boehner simply didn't call it to a vote, for whatever reason, and held it over for this year's first Congressional session.

If it had passed on last year's congressional session, people might have been able to claim disaster relief on their taxes this April. As it didn't, they may have to wait until April 2014 before they can claim losses on their taxes. This could result in a lot of small businesses closing because they don't have the funds to recover, and those former business owners are going to find themselves in the unemployment line.

Guess what, Harry; you can go tell Barry that while he was winning his reincarnation by the low information voters, the GOP was cleaning up in the state elections. The party is not dying, it is thriving at the state level. The GOP states are getting out of debt, creating jobs, and hordes are moving there from Democrat disaster areas like California, New York, and Illinois. Its only a matter of time before the GOP progress at the state level carries over to the national level, especially as Obama balatantly continues to ruin the economy.

He quickly realized he could make more money as a liberal... and has been one ever since. I have to say that my family made money too on one of his BLM deals in S. Nevada. He now suffers from forgetfulness and is closely handled by an ever diligent staff. But they can't always protect him from saying or doing something silly.

I ask those money-grubbing "I hadta wurk fer wut I gots, by dadgum ever'body kin wurk fer wut they needs" idiots what THEY happen to value more, actual human life -- or money.

It is truly disgusting how they are more concerned with the cost of a damn building than with making sure people have a place to live.

Amanda

Meteorologists have said that Sandy was unprecedented, that we've never once had two storm fronts collide and form a superstorm before.

Really? Get off of planet Amanda and come back to earth. If memory serves me correctly they wrote a book and made a movie about a storm in the Atlantic with THREE FRONT colliding. They called it the Perfect Storm. If this happened before it will happen again. Luckily the storm was further east of the coast. Furthermore when I was a child living in NYC I remember 3 hurricanes that made there way up the coast and slammed in to NYC and NJ. This was not unprecedented nor unusual it can happen when the same weather patterns repeat themselves where the Pacific Ocean in cooler than the Atlantic Ocean.

Brace yourself because it has happened before and will happen again.

Oh by the way PORK is PORK. This bill came out of the Senate loaded with enough pork that nobody with any kind of intelligence would recognize it as Sandy Relief. The people in NY and NJ needed better from our government which I am sure that no American would ever deprived them. It could have been done in days after the storm. Now you want us to believe that nothing was learned from Katrina? Adding more pork than the relief is asinine. I guess we have to wait until after the election to get anything done by those pork pushers in Washington.

Reid is a dunce and is the poster child for Washington incompetence. Even his own party threw him out of the fiscal cliff discussion and needed to bring the brilliant VP of gaff to get something done. I hope he is not the best that the democrats have to offer in the Senate.

So...this is what it has come to. Party lines fighting over which storm(s) were worse, and blaming each other in the process, along with name calling, finger pointing, etc.

I wonder...do other countries look at how divided we are (over a natural disaster, of all things), and think "gee, and we wanted to be just like them...why?"

I always thought that it was at times like this is when the U.S. showed it's strength...by coming together as one..."United", if you will...not squabbling like petulant 3 year olds.

What is not said..nor more than likely thought about is really easy to see if looking...we have an elected bunch of millionaire politicans..who pretty much say whatever to get elected then do what they please as long as it satisifies the biggest supporters they have..which are other millionaires. Lets consider that no jobs bill has been passed by either party. All of congress allows goods to be sold from other countries that tax whatever we send out to them...any kind of goods at all from this country has a VAT tax on it....especially China..which many companies from this country are moving too..and why not..they can build whatever there using low cost government controled workers and ship those goods here with little to no tax cost at all. Its all about profits...nothing else. Social security has lost millions..why...jobs are leaving here to go to China and other countries...millions of jobs have gone with our governments blessings...and the huge loss to social security has gone with them. And not one politican has voiced any concern. Yet..we keep electing the same ones inot office..the real questions we should be asking ourselves is why?

I find it fascinating that you elect to relieve your "God of Love" of any responsibility for his "destructive creations"...you know, like war? Or are you telling me your "God of Love" is not the almighty creator of heaven and earth and therefore an innocent bystander. Or do you also assign responsibility to Satan for certain acts or do they share responsibility? And if they share responsibility does that make them equals? Nothing I hate worse than a religious slippery slope.

So tell me, are you one of those religious people who believe 911 was the fault of pagans and homosexuals? I'm just a little curious as to how you divvy up responsibility between the sacred and the mundane? Do we praise God and blame the devil? Or do they both get a pass and we just blame pagans and athiests?

There sure is lots of right wing hate on this vine today. Reid did compare the two storms but it's was obvious he was referring to Sandy's scope not the cost. the only reason Sandy killed fewer people is because we actually have a federal government that responded to this natural disaster in a timely manner.

For more than four days as Katrina approached from the south NOAA was pretty sure it would hit New Orleans. What did the Republican administration do????? ABSOLULTY NOTHING! Of course every Republican supporter is still living in la la land thinking the Bush administration did a good job with Katrina.... "Your doing a great job Browny". Remember those words.... Bush just paid lip service to the disaster with a pile of self serving crap that did nothing to help the American citizens of the Gulf Coast.

The thing I dislike about Republicans is they all have selective amnesia and they just love turning lies into truth and truth into lies. As a group right wingers are not just pathetic Americans but also selfish human beings........

It is not the responsibility of the rest of us to keep bailing out idiots who choose to live there. The sea level is rising (in spite of the denial of the idiots who refuse to believe), and those who choose to live where flooding is going to happen every few years should fund their own stupidity. Oh by the way PORK is PORK. This bill came out of the Senate loaded with enough pork that nobody with any kind of intelligence would recognize it as Sandy Relief.

The Senate made those changes, then gave the amended HR1 now retitled 'National Disaster Relief 2012' to the House Dec 28.

THERE WAS NO MENTION OF SANDY IN THE TITLE. IT WAS MEANT TO HELP EVERYONE WHO SUFFERED IN ANYY WAY FROM ANY DISASTER UP TILL DEC 28 2012.

It had Senate approval, Presidential approval, and majority House approval. Speaker Boehner simply didn't call it to a vote, for whatever reason, and held it over for this year's first Congressional session.

      Backcountry said:

Ok , so WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE PASSED POST-HASTE??????? If there is no emergency why the rush?

If it had passed on last year's Congressional session, people might have been able to claim disaster relief on their taxes this April. As it didn't, they may have to wait until April 2014 before they can claim losses on their taxes. This could result in a lot of small businesses closing because they don't have the funds to recover in 2013, and those former business owners are going to find themselves in the unemployment line by tax time 2014--when they CAN claim the disaster on their taxes.

Also please do explain why it is reffered to as a "Sandy RELIEF" BILL???

      1) Because Sandy was the largest disaster to hit the US in 2012. 2) Because by refering to it as such, those trying to get it passed can appeal to emotion. 3) Because the media keeps referring to it as such to sell papers and create headlines. 4) because those trying NOT to get it passed can point to certain items that would be 'pork' if it WERE a Sandy Relief Bill' and couldn't use said items as an excuse if it were not.

Allow me to refresh your memory of the topic at hand by reposting Sen Reids statement-

"The people of New Orleans and that area, they were hurt but nothing in comparison to what happened to the people in New York and New Jersey. We have to meet the needs of the American people when an act of God occurs"

So apperntly YOU are the ONLY one trying to claim this bill has nothing to do with emergency relief.

If you look at Reid's statement closely, he says:

...it is just unfortunate that we do not have the RELIEF for New York and New Jersey and the rest already.

I am not the 'only one trying to claim this has noting to do with emergency relief.' The bill itself said that. If you'd read any of my above posts, I've quoted this multiple times on the same comment thread:

In the Senate of the United States, December 28, 2012. Resolved, That the bill from the House of Representatives (H.R. 1) entitled ‘‘An Act making appropriations for the Department of Defense and the other Departments and Agencies of the Government for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2011, and for all other purposes.’’, do pass with the following AMENDMENTS....

The Senate made amendments to the original bill that would authorize spending for all departments of the Federal Government, allocated funds for disaster relief for EVERYONE affected by a disaster in 2012 and sent it back to the House on Dec 28 and retitled it 'National Disaster Relief 2012.' It does NOT specifically mention Sandy, nor does it specify 'emergency'.

The leaders in BOTH parties clearly don't share your opinion.

Everyone has gotten so swept up in the rhetoric coming from both parties, both sides, that they have not been paying attention to WHAT THE BILL ACTUALLY SAYS. It, like my posts that explain the whole thing, has gotten lost in the bipartisan bickering and name calling--Boehner telling Reid to "Go f*** yourself" being the first, and most egregious, example; now this. I'm not saying that Reid was right in his comments, I am glad he apologized for the words he spoke, but I'm also not absolving Vitter of his name-calling either.

Can you all just sit back, just for moment, and look at what's happened the last few days with all the namecalling, and wonder what the rest of the world is thinking at the moment? What are we doing but embarassing ourselves and our nation? What kind of example are we setting? We are supposed to be a world leader--what kind of front are we showing, both individually here on the boards and as a national collective with our bickering and infighting, immature, childish name-calling and inability to resolve issues like sensible, grown human beings? People in other countries read these messages, these posts, these comments. Are you showing the world the best of you? And if you are not, how can we expect the rest of the world to respect us if we cannot even show respect for each other and ourselves?

I feel as though I've spent the entire day on a mountaintop shouting to the wind---aka the people on here. Almost no one has bothered to go read this for themselves, bothered to go look at the bill and form their own conclusions--they're just parroting what their politician-of-the-week says and runs with it with no thought to forming their own opinions and educating themselves. And when someone does go find out the heart of the matter and tries to correct misconceptions, they respond with childish, off-topic crudities, attacking the poster instead of the content--because they know their opinions are wrong but can't admit it.

This is why we have the government we have--people who wait for their government to tell them what to think instead of going, doing research, reading the thing for themselves and FINDING OUT THE TRUTHS THE POLITICIANS WON'T TELL YOU.

      To NBC News:

Please stop with the cut-and-paste journalism. Instead of just repeating what one party or the other says, seek to educate your readers. Post something that explains the bill so the average person can understand it--if you don't have the time, then for the Goddess's sake, I'll do it.

Everyone has been so caught up in calling this a 'Sandy relief bill' that the original intent of the bill has been lost in the rhetoric being spit out from either side. There used to be something called journalistic integrity--it was something I learned in high school. Journalists have to post the truth, irregardless of political leanings on both sides. You write facts, not emotion. Use logic, reason, intellect. Educate, instead of seeking to divide. Write thoughtful pieces that explore both sides of a topic, instead of picking sides.

I challenge NBC News writers to write an article that truly explains the content of HR1. Read it. Write what is truly there. I have faith that the majority of the people reading will understand once they read a clear, unbiased, logically-reasoned treatise on the bill itself instead of reflecting talking points from both sides of the aisle.

      Toxic

Seeking Sanity is referring to a report by the Congressional Research Service.

BUT. The information they are providing is INCOMPLETE and OMITS a number of Republicans that do have a number of degrees and/or honors.

Seeking is correct about Phd's, but as for including all advanced degrees, NO!

I recall the Phd's were things like Sociology, Political Science, Minority Studies - yeah I had to do a double take on that one. One might have been in economics and one might have been in Business.

MD is an advanced degree (8 years+). Republicans out number democrats about 3 - 1. People think that democrats have the correct prescription for medical costs? I say the ACA is legal Malpractice.

MBA is an advanced degree lead by Democrats by just a couple. But BA is lead by Republicans as well as those who actually run a business.

Lawyer is an advanced degree lead by Republicans by about a dozen. If you add all advanced degrees, you will find that Republicans and Democrats republicans may actually have an edge

Military is also is lead by democrats by a few. You wouldn't think that because Republicans have an edge in the rank and file, and a huge lead in the Officers rank. Seems the happy military stays in the armed forces, and the disgruntled go to congress to defund it.

Who is more educated then after more facts are offered? Actually, the Republicans.

While they often elect not to continue to a Ph'd (one more year), they are more likely to have multiple degrees. The average Republican holds .2 degrees more than the average Democrat.

Oh, Yes how did I know Republicans were short changed on the Evaluation.

Senator David Vitter for one. He was a Rhodes Scholar that graduated "With Distinction".

How about that, he wasn't half as notorious with women as Bill Clinton, had much higher accomplishment in education than Bill, and they loath him.

I'm pretty confident of my numbers without checking too close, because the 112th Congress was noted as having a higher level of education than the 112th, and the story of the day was Republicans sweeping into office. The 113th is only a little give-back.

Seeking, just because a story makes your point doesn't mean it is accurate or true. Just because you have 4 democratic party members to 1 of all other parties toughting and inaccurate or untrue story doesn't make it true either.

This could result in a lot of small businesses closing because they don't have the funds to recover in 2013,

Might, may, could...Yeah, great argument. Of course anyone who has a clue how government works understands that bills can be passed at a later date with the provisions being applied retroactively. Any other excuses you didn't bother to fully research???

      2) Because by refering to it as such, those trying to get it passed can appeal to emotion.

      Bingo!!!!

      4) because those trying NOT to get it passed can point to certain items that would be 'pork' if it WERE a Sandy Relief Bill' and couldn't use said items as an excuse if it were not.

A- If it is not a relief bill there is NO reason to rush it through. B- There will be a bill passed, trimming away the pork is NOT a problem at all since, as you admit, those things are not part of the relief effort and can be addressed again at a later date. BUT, of course the TRUTH is that many of the things in this bill have already been addressed in previous bills AND FAILED!

The very definition of PORK is taking items that could NOT get passed through Congress, tacking them on to another bill and then trying to rush it through by calling it "emergency relief".

Everyone has gotten so swept up in the rhetoric coming from both parties, both sides, that they have not been paying attention to WHAT THE BILL ACTUALLY SAYS.

I know exactly what's in the bill Amanda, the problem is not the content...It's the way they are trying to cram it down our throats using a disaster as an excuse. That's the issue, the rush to get it done...Or did you not understand what Senator Reid was bitching about?

      Amanda

Boehner and Vitter are PO'd because Reid is dealing dishonestly. This is a bill that was sent though the house clear back in early 2011 that Reid tabled (the original senator of "H" no). At the time the spending may have been more appropriate than it is today in 2013. Today we are down the road faster to severe austerity and much of what was in the bill is now seen as unnecessary or outdated.

You have been alert enough to see that this bill was not a true hurricane relief. It was a trap to get the Republicans to spend more when they are trying to cut. And if they don't pass this extra spending then they are not interested in helping the hurricane victims and that is just evil.

The Republicans did the right thing, strip all the old bill out and pass only what was actual hurricane relief.

You will never get the fiscal house in order until you get rid of such rigid, hateful, vengeful, partisan politicians like Reid and Pelosi. Have you ever looked at how much money they take back to their districts/states to the heavy spending people that fund their campaigns? Fat chance you will ever see them gone!

You might as well add Obama to that group. In the past 2 weeks he has said "he's not talking to Boehner about any cuts" and "we don't have a spending problem". The Hagel nomination doesn't appear as it seems either. I heard a couple of conservatives say this was to divide the the republican party. I think it is more about trying to drive a wedge between the voters and the republican party. See, the republicans are right wing extremists. I think also think this may be a miss, seeing 10 Democrat Senators object to Hagel and most republicans already are expressing some reservations. The splitting might be against his own support instead of that of the Republicans. No matter though, people seem to forget by election.

I don't know much about seeking sanity's life, but if she's married I gotta pity her poor husband! What a mean spirited, contencious, nagging woman! First she personally attacks any conservative poster (coh violation?) then she spouts nonsense to support her weak arguments. The gal needs to relax, and I need to take an aspirin.

Mr. Seeking Sanity, I really feel sorry for you!

Don't you just love the defense of a guy that clearly shouldn't even hold office? If this were a Republican, you'd see the left all a twiiter about how cold and heartless the comment is, instead here we see a perfect example of how the left goes to great lengths to minimize the gravity of such a disgusting remark made by a person that has made mistake time and time again, and yet is forgiven over and over by the clueless left, simply because he is a Democrat.

I haven't read the whole bill. Meant to this weekend but got busy and didn't have a chance, am planning on doing so this weekend. I skimmed it, but nothing really glaring jumped out at me.

Of course anyone who has a clue how government works understands that bills can be passed at a later date with the provisions being applied retroactively. Any other excuses you didn't bother to fully research???

I do know if it pases later the provisions can be applied retroactively. But it looks extremely unlikely that those affected will be able to claim it on their taxes this year because there simply isn;t much time to pass the bill, draw up the tax legislation, and write it into people's tax prep software and tax books. Therefore, if it is enacted at all, it will come as a check/reimbursement later this year or not until next tax season.

The very definition of PORK is taking items that could NOT get passed through Congress, tacking them on to another bill and then trying to rush it through by calling it "emergency relief".

And please try to remember, this bill is NOT titled 'Emergency relief'. It is titled 'National Disaster relief 2012.' Applies to all disasters up until Dec 28 2012.

The Republicans did the right thing, strip all the old bill out and pass only what was actual hurricane relief.

They haven't passed it. The bill that the House voted on on Friday was to put money into the National Flood Insurance Program so that Sandy victims in the NE could get the NFIP money. The actual bill, HR1, is still tabled and waiting for perusal. You forget that when HR1was given to the House after getting bipartisan Senate approval, the majority of House republicans supported it, Speaker Boehner simply never called it to vote--which most people were expecting him to.

The same can also be said of those on the other side of the aisle too. As Speaker of the House, 3rd in line for the presidency, Head of the Homeland Security Oversight Committee direct supervisor to the9th most powerful woman in the world (Janet Napolitano) John Boehner gets a huge chunk of taxpayer money from lobbyists, from private contractors and for-profit prisons contracted to Homeland Security. And when Reid accused him of running his own dictatorship, he told Reid to "Go f*** yourself".

There is blame to be had on both sides of the aisle and from all parties, No one is immune and no one is exempt. There should be term limits to Senate and House just like there is for the Presidency.

When he's right he's right. Harry Reid is an idiot. He's also a pasty faced, creepily soft spoken, corrupt turd.

I'm tired of all of the rush, emergency bill passage practices the Democrats continue to display while demonstrating their inability and desire to read what they pass. Heck, even Obamacare was considered an emergency even though it wouldn't go into effect until 2014. (I don't know about you, but my medical insurance costs went up by over 20% last year. So much for the "Affordable Care Act".)

The sandy bill has more pork than the bacon isle at the supper market.

First it's not pork, unless you consider fixing other areas besides those areas affected by Sandy as being pork. Those states that had/have their own natural disasters needed to get their people in there as well so they could get help - which is proper. Second: What's a "supper market"?

The reason New Orleans had more deaths is because they live in a place that we all know that was bound to happen but nothing sensible was ever done to guard against that outcome. Knowing the mentality that seems to have become pervasive in southern states politicians, I see that as a destructive element that really needs some intellectual attention and get off of the crap like the Abortion issue or getting a probe into women's pussies and do your job to protect living people from dying.

I'll bet the New Jersey, New York area will be ready for a repeat while New Orleans will most likely not be.

I didn't care much for Clinton but it's easy to see that he was a far better President than anything that followed him. I just didn't care for his personality, came off as a little smug IMO. But as a President it's hard to look past his ability to compromise and the fact that he ran the smallest deficits in recent history. Hardly what you'd call "raging" on the man now is it?

Maybe I put a few words in your mouth, inadvertantly (you have to realize that "you" in my post meant the collective "you" of the right wing, or maybe I'm giving you too much credit). I've read enough of your posts to know where you stand and it's definitely not in the center it's to the far right. The article is about Vitter attacking Reid over his statements, and if you defend the perverted sicko Vitter I have to assume you agree with his attacks on Reid. Even if you said nothing about Reid you imply support for Vitter. I'd be willing to bet a billion you wouldn't forgive a Dem senator for the same perversions. Clinton at least has the distinction for being an effective President and balancing the budget, so you're right to look past your political prejudices and forgive him. Vitter has no distinction. I don't care if he apologized he's sick and the epitomy of abusing a powerful position of public service and personal wealth.

Insults mean nothing except that you have nothing. And your defense of a diaper fetishist is stupid and indefensible sorry. My opinions and statements are far from the stupidest on the vine. That distinct honor belongs to the teatarded libertarians you so proudly group yourself with. As long as we're going to sling insults might I suggest you feel such a need to defend such disgusting proclivities as diaper fetishes because you share them?

I'm not much concerned with your opinion of me because, like most of your other opinions, it's fairly worthless. I suppose typing in all caps and "LOL"ing is evidence of insight?

My local library is expecting their first shipment of tax forms and instruction books next week. Even if this thing gets passed this week it's still not going to be in time to add instructions on how to claim disaster exemptions to those tax books and another blank to those tax forms. They COULD release a separate disaster claims form and a separate book, but they would still have to have that out by Jan 31st when the government mandates that W2's go out.

Also, if they can't get that done now what made you think those things would be in place if they passed it on Dec 31st?

Because if they'd passed it between Dec 28, when the bill was passed from Senate back to the House, and Speaker Boehner had called it to vote on Dec 31st like everyone in the House was expecting him to and ready to vote on it at that time, they still would have been able to make those adjustments to tax instruction books the first week of January to make the Jan 15 shipping date.

From what I could tell, the total dollar amount allocated to the different departments in the budget of the House version of HR1 was no different than the total that was in the Senate version of HR1. What changed was the amount allocated to some departments was lowered so more could be given to those departments that dealt directly with people affected by any disaster up till Dec 28 2012.

You do understand people have until April 15th to file their taxes right? You also understand that the IRS grants extensions and that a hurricane that destroyed everything you own would likely get you one right?

Yes, but the deadline to make changes to tax software and tax form instruction books isn't extendable. That stuff has to be out and available to the public by the time employees' W2's go out. My employer's already working on ours--our HR asked me today if I had any other receipts for supplies I purchased for the office before they do my W2 (if I get something for my desk, a stapler, pens, colored sticky notes instead of the plain ones everyone else uses, I buy these myself. My employer knows, however, that since I'm the receptionist, what I get for my desk becomes communal property throughout the building so they insist on adding it in as reimbursable business expenses on my W2.)

You can harp on that until you are blue in the face. It doesn't change anything. They want it passed RIGHT NOW because of the emergency relief the Sandy victims need. They've attached a bunch of stuff that failed to pass Congress and now they're trying to sneak it though post-haste using this hurricane as a excuse. That is the definition of PORK whether you want to accept that fact or not.

And again, I explain that this is not a 'Sandy Relief bill' with other things attached to it, it is a government-wide budget bill that just happens to have extra allocations that would favorably help everyone affected by a disaster this year. And in case you hadn't realized, we've been demanding that our lawmakers come up with a government budget for quite some time now.

Your whole tax argument is moot. NO politician used that as a reason to get this bill passed ASAP. The only reason ANY of them want it passed now is for Sandy relief. It's what Reid was bitching about, it's what Christie was bitching about, it's what they've ALL been bitching about.

And I'll say it again, If it's not money needed for the imediate relief of those affected by Sandt then it should be delt with properly. Discussed and debated just like we expect our politicians to do. That is their job after all.

Some of the things in this bill have already failed to pass Congress. They were voted down. Congress said NO. So why don't you explain how tacking that stuff onto this new bill (that so many people want to rush through due to Sandy) is NOT pork??

Reid clearly made a horrible statement. Katrina still remains the most devastating hurricane of our lifetime because of the death and distruction. That being said, the people that Sandy hit deserve to have help sent as we have done for all who have experienced disasters of this magnitude!

I love these comparisons. NY/NJ didn't suffer the loss of life because they heeded the warnings and moved to safer ground. More people live in the NYC metro area than lived in the path of Katrina. But their politicians told them to go to the Super Dome even after Bush released federal money to help evacuate the area 2 whole days before the hurricane hit. Some of my friends who were at law school at Tulane evacuated over to Baton Rogue. The main problem with the loss of life was that EDUCATED people left and UNEDUCATED people choose to go to the Super Dome.

And for the the complaining of how fast the funds got where. What group of people suffered in Katrina which became MSNBC's new campaign of how Bush hates certain people compared to what group of people have suffered up here in the NYC area. Yes, racism still exists on MSNBC.

Looks like Vitter would wish to remain as unnoticed as He possibly can. It has been reported from time to time, that he has yet some $500,000.00 in bounced checks floating around various "houses of ill repute" from western Mississippi to Eastern Texas, and all around the Washington DC area. He should be more worried about angry women with razors.

Everybody looks at these storms differently, Katrina had a greater death toll, more damage done to the urban areas and many, many people evacuated. Sandy affected a wider area and many more people and did great damage to a huge urban area. I don't think this is a subject to be claiming, "We're number one" about. After all as Jimmy points out There were at least 6000 killed in Galveston, TX in 1900.

I think we all should just get together and help our neighbors with a national problem.

Katrina's ok to give pork-laden aid to (even if it was given too late). Because it's in a red state. New York can just go to hell because it's blue.

Just like Reid deserves unlimited criticism for a few misstatements when he's in pursuit of aid for hurricane victims because he's a Democrat. But Vitter deserves praise in spite of his prostitute usage and diaper fetish because he's a Republican.

                        See? Simple.

That's a very, very good point, Dangerous Mind. Where were all of these teabagging dimwits when the Republican Congress and President passed pork laden aid for Katrina?

I'm beginning to think that all the little righties suffer from the same condition Vitter does. I would, however, hesitate to call it a fetish. I think they they got just so far in their potty training and couldn't figure it out from there...

We should go into the business of selling diapers with a "Don't Tread on Me" patch on the butt that turns blue when it's full.

Seems to me that Reid is in the same boat as Obama, it doesn't matter what he says or does it is wrong in the eyes of republicans. No doubt that Harry Reid was concerned about Katrina victims but the real subject at hand was the after math of Sandy. How these people shave is beyond me, how do they look in a mirror at their evil selves.

I do not think so, Obama did well with the Sandy. But when 1,000 or so people die in Katrina and the Speaker of the House says it is "nothing" in comparison to Sandy, that is clearly wrong. I think he would like to walk that one back. The fact that 12 days after Katrina those folks were receiving money and now we are 68 days or so past Sandy and the relief money is not flowing is a travesty. Get the pork out and get the good people of NJ and NY thier money

Obama did great in the aftermath of Sandy. Especially during his two hour photo opp tour of the damage in New Jersey. It was good for the Obama campaign and he took full advantage of the crisis. Remember, it was Democrats that coined the phrase never let a good crisis go to waste. But as is evident from the lack of help the victims have received, Obama and Washington quickly moved on to other priorities.

Here's the issue, its not what those two say. It what all politicans say and how the other side reacts. IN New Jersey, Gov. Christie says some funny things. but he is always under the microscope for that.

Additionally, this administration has made pretty good at overstating and over emphasizing. Yea we just had a recession that was awful and maybe by the numbers the worst since the Depression. However, most depression era souls are probably rolling over in their graves at the thought of the hardship of 10% unemployment and the miniscule drop in the market by comparison. This admin has certainly opened its doors to ridicule from opposing parties for this reason.

Reid continues to make one dumbass statement after another. First, he attacked Romney's degree of "mormonism" which was totally useless, then he attacked Boehner during the fiscal cliff crisis, and now he makes another outlandish statement when Hurricane Katrina caused about TIMES as many deaths as Sandy!!!

Does he know when to close his piehole ? Does he know when it's time to dislodge his foot from his mouth ??

Having seen the devastation caused by Katrina (My son lives in New Orleans), it was truly epic destruction. But to compare one devastation worse than another is just plain wrong. Anyone who has lived through one of these events, be it Katrina or Sandy, they are suffering equally. The response to each has it's problems, but using it as political fodder is terrible sin and should not be forgiven.

Why New Orleans?. Its always going to be in the path every hurricane season. It's a city below sea level and challenged also by the Mississippi River. There's no reason except for the established population to have the city remain. It will always be good money after bad and we'll never be able to make it safe from the sea. NY/NJ on the other hand will only have the occasional hurricane and we can look at reinvestment as a better idea financially. NO only wants you for one thing, your tourist dollars. It's architecture is awesome it's people and society much less so. Education-poor, danger-high, corruption- like a third world country. The only thing I like about NO is the food. That's awesome.

If all you can see about New Orleans is the food, then you've truly missed out on a historical culture. But to say not to rebuild in one area over another is just wrong. If you cannot re-invest in one area, then why should anyone get any more money? What about Florida, it's hit by more Hurricanes then Louisiana, so we should just write off Florida? The Outer Banks of North Carolina is constantly being washed out due to hurricanes (the outskirts of Sandy did this but no reads about it) and yet it is rebuilt. Why? Because Americans live there. No one should be excluded.

I agree with Think, but it should also be pointed out - scientists have been saying since 1980 that we will get more of these destructive weather events because of our energy policies. We need to impose weather-catastrophe taxes on all carbon fuel sources. Let the big oil and coal users pay in proportion for the damage that they cause, and let electric vehcile drivers and clean air utilities off the hook.

And, you're correct, their education is improving quite a bit. But, some people have pre-conceived notions about many places and don't really have a good idea of what is real.

Well, noncoms, let's impose a weather-catastrophe tax on the Financial District in New York City. Just because a gulf coast is a major oil producer doesn't mean they should be responsible for weather. WE ALL DRIVE!. Its as American as apple pie. Climate change affects EVERYONE. More tornadoes in the mid-west, more forest fires in California, more snow in the North East. The list goes on and on. We're all Americans and deserve the same treatment from our government.

If you have behavior known to contribute to public costs, doesn't it make sense to impose taxes on that behavior to help pay for the costs? If I want to drive an 8-mpg SUV, why not tax me more than the 50-mpg Prius driver through additional gasoline taxes? It is fair, and helps pay for the costs of climate change (and can be applied only to gasoline so diesel commercial vehicles are exempt).

After all, the $60b price tag of Sandy aid will amount to $200 per every man woman and child in our 300-million population. But the destructive force came disproportionately from those who over-use fossil fuels. They should pay more. It's called personal responsiblity.

There are some areas that should not be rebuilt due to multiple hits from natural disasters - I'll even start with my home state - CA the areas around Malibu and PCH that are hit with slides etc, there should be some thought as to what can be built there. The Outer Banks again they are Natures way of protecting the coast if man were designing nature we would be saying they are designed to be washed away - so why build homes on them. SOme of our river flood basins should not be rebuilt, if there is disasterous flooding in multiple years maybe there should be only farmland no homes. If taxpayers have to help rebuild homes a couple of times in 20-30 years maybe the homes and Businesses dont belong there. It is something to at least camly think about and discuss.

@ noncoms. It doesn't matter what you or I drive (and my car gets 40 mpg highway), we all contribute to the pollution. And the gas tax is to repair the infrastructure. So a Prius that gets 50 mpg is contributing less for more mile driving than let's say a Chevy Malibu which gets 25 mpg. Both use the road the same and both continue to the wear and tear on the road, yet the Prius gets a break on road taxes. And who's to say who over uses fossil fuels? Truckers use way more than you and I, but it is their job and Trucks bring everything you use to your neighborhood. Do we tax them more, thus driving up the cost of living? No, we shouldn't.

And with all the Financial Centers in New York, which controls the banking industry, thus the money, why not tax them? My point is a another special tax isn't the answer.

To think - I addressed trucking already. The point I was making was about the use of tax code to promote desired social trends. We increase taxes on certain things, and provide tax deductions, to promote things that help society as a whole. If greater gasoline taxes reduce gasoline usage, and promote higher mpg vehicles, then we all benefit. Plus its a free market solution - rich people are free to spend the extra money to burn the extra gas if they want to.

Bottomline: higher gasoline taxes for climate catastrophe relief will reduce our dependence on oil, reduce the trade imbalance, delay the eventualy exhaustion of petroleum, reduce future climate impacts, and direct the cost of climate tragedies back onto those who most contribute to causing them.

Incidentally - High mileage vehicles, being lighter, wear our roads less than heavy vehicles like SUVs.

noncoms: The very fact that the hypothetical SUV you talk about only gets 8mpg ensures the individual refueling it pays more in fuel taxes than the hypothetical Prius owner: 7.5 times as much in taxes per mile driven in fact. In reality, diesel is currently taxed at an even greater rate than gasoline and diesel-fueled passenger trucks and cars are not exempt from the higher taxes. They are taxed just as much as the big rigs (and we don't get to write it off as opperating expenses)

billybob: the House sent the Senate a budget bill for all departments of the Federal Government. The Senate looked at it and saw no extra allocations for the Departments dealing with all the natural disasters thus far this year.

So the Senate asked for a rundown on what was needed from all over the country, from all statesaffected.

As it didn't, they may have to wait until April 2014 before they can claim losses on their taxes. this could result in a lot of small businesses closing because they don;t have the funds to recover.

This comment from Vitter from Louisiana, whose brain resides between his crotch, names show up on prostitutes list in DC and he does this over and over with the Bible in his hand and those poor idiots down there keep electing him. His opinions are worth nothing. I just wish he would slip up and go to a guy some night and the guy recognize him and slam him in the press, but the people in Louisiana carrying their Bibles would put him back in, knowing the he exhibits sexual deviate traits and issues and he has the gall to attack someone else?

Fisrt is this confusing Vitter with Weiner? Or is this about Vitter getting caught up in the DC Madam scnadal, or is this about his rupposed DIaper fetish?

All you people are trashing Vitter for his supposed indescreations (because he's a rep) Are the same libs the think Bill Clinton (you know that guy that was impeached for having sex with one of his employees in the oval office) is quite fine, even the person who represented you at last years DNC. I don't know, isn't this just a little hypocritical?

ooomy, Clinton was never taken to court because he broke no laws. The Supreme Court cannot define pornography never mind what a blow job is. A woman sucking a mans tongue is a kiss. isn't a blow job technically a kiss on another part of the anatomy. I find kissing is quite pleasurable, and not against the law. What was that song by Exile?" I want to kiss you all over "

Really, shockanddisgusted, all you can do is attack my intelligence? Why is that? Why not support your position with FACTS. Visiting a madam doesn't necessarily mean your a deviant. I heard his name was found in her list of clients, but I didn't hear anything about what happened. If you have some facts, the show them, but to claim someone is ignorant because they haven't read the FACTS, shows very little tolerance and bias on your part. And I mostly read MSN and watch nightly news on NBC, a somewhat left leaning news sources.

So I'd say your lack of facts may make you the ignorant one. But I wouldn't want to accuse you of that so that I would be just as biased as you.

I wasn't aware, "think" that being willfully ignorant was a sign of low intelligence...but if you say so...(I say you're a little touchy on the "smarts" issue...but that's between you and your therapist).

Do your own homework on your Vitter. At best, visiting a madam may not make you a deviant, but it certainly is very illegal in most parts of the United States. You are obviously OK with lawmakers that violate laws and I pity your position of having to defend such a disgusting human being.

As a Louisiana native "coon ass" I know a thing or two about comparing Katrina To Sandy hurricanes. If it were not for Federal ineptness of the Corp of Engineers there would not have been a problem in New Orleans and thousands of people would not have died. FEDERAL INACTION OF KNOWN PROBLEMS. In other words no money to fix known problems because of "political inaction". Sandy on the other hand was forecast to do exactly what it did. The combination of New Orleans being BELOW SEA LEVEL and the coast of New Jersey and New York being at nearly the same as sea level can not be questioned, THIS IS FACT, what IS and DENIED by the same republicrap "lawmakers" is that sea level is INCREASING and WILL BE INCREASING FROM NOW ON. What most republicrap "lawmakers" balked about while approving money for the help and reconstruction of the New Orleans area was that it is not "good investment " of tax payers money. A paltry 30 billion, and thousands of DEAD citizens. Now New York and New Jersey and sundry other locals want 60 BILLION. In my mind 60 billion is ONE HELL OF A LOT MORE MONEY THAN 30 BILLION. Lets not even compare lives lost. So from the "family values" PROSTITUTE USING VITTER SAYING MR REID IS CRAZY COMPARING THE TWO AND NOT GIVING New Orleans the "most damage" title, well Vitter is WRONG AGAIN, BUT THIS IS NOTHING NEW, VITTER IS WRONG 95% OF THE TIME ANYWAY. Hey Dave any new hookers you recommend? Vitter is a snake in the grass and a COMPLETE LIER, I would not vote for him to run an animal shelter.

Funny that Belgium & The Netherlands never see these huge flooding & storm issues, as they are below sea level as well. No that they deal with hurricanes but, those North Sea Storms get pretty nasty. Engineers in those countries laugh at the Corps of Engineers in this country, and they have a right to.

FYI - the steering currents in the Northern Atlantic go from Nort to south along the coast of Europe instead of from south to north along our Atlantic seaboard. As a result, I doubt that a hurricane would ever hit those coasts. That is not to say they don't see bad storms, but nothing on the order of a hurricane.

I have to say that with all the trouble the GOP has right now, calling Harry Reid an idiot is not in the best interest of the GOP. Maybe Mr. Reid misspoke and it happens people do it all the time, but I think the GOP has enough to deal with without Vitter going around the Captiol Building calling a fellow Congressman names like a five year old who was told he couldn't get a g.i. joe doll for his birthday. Grow up. Everyone knows that Hurricane Katrina was worse than Hurricane Sandy as far as the death toll and the amount of money it cost to help the people in the southern states that were affected by Katrina. But, if you would actually you know read once in a while and get your information from more than one source (FOX NEWS) then you would know that Sandy was actually supposed to miss the east coast and instead it struck it head on. You people have no freaking clue what is going on in the world, yet you go on these websites and post these comments like you actually know what is going on in the world. Try reading and actually listening to the news from multiple sources and not just FOX. You may actually learn something.

If you got your information other than all the Left leaning media sources ...you would not make such a comment. Ask yourself a question....Why did the left fill the Sandy Bill full of garbage and Pork for the Left ...that it was impossible to pass the BILL for Sandy as it stood.

Therefore they are the ones at fault for the delayed the passage for Sandy funds.

Reid wasn't comparing the disasters themselves - he was comparing the response to each in the Senate and Congress. The response was a few days versus over 60 now and counting. That was the point. Turning the conversation into something else is always the Republican mantra. Let's ignore the real issue and debate something that no one really cares about so we can have righteous indignation over the wrong point or a point not even being attempted to be made. I had an ex-wife who would do the same thing - take a small and meaningless statement in the middle of a broader point I was trying to make and attack some miniscule part of the entire thing - totally missing the larger point of what I was saying. It is maddening and doesn't help to really solve anything - but then what would make me want to believe that Republicans actually want to solve anything - they just want to take potshots and play these word games nonstop. Not really helpful.

US Senators are suppose to be "gentlemen" anf are suppose to be above this pitty nonsense. While it is not the exclusive habit of the Republicans to attack and fight instead of resolve the problom and play word games and accuse others of stuff they make up ---- they have bcome the master's of it over the last several years. When Republican controlled State's get up s$%t creek, they can't suck money fast enough from the Feds (despite the fact that we the taxpayers have to keep them afloat year to year anyway). When Democratically controlled State's find themselves in a bad way, they can't even get THEIR OWN MONEY back from a Republican Controlled House of Representatives.

Why do we continue to state that Louisiana is a republican controlled state. In 2005 when Katrina hit, the Governor was Kathleen Blanco, a democrat. In addition, Ray Nagin, the Mayor of New Orleans at the time, was also a democract.

Vitter should not call anyone an idiot he ran as a born again christian while paying hookers for sex. Maybe he is suffering the late stages of veneral induced brain damage.

No one can win playing the "my disaster is bigger than your disaster" game. It's like trying to compare car accidents. Which one is worse, a crash that kills two people or a crash that leaves two people as quadrapelegics for the rest of their lives? The first requires the victims families to have a few thousand dollars in burial money, but the second requires the families to have millions of dollars in lifetime care. Reid can't win with his "millions of homes" argument, and Vitter can't win with his "1800 dead" argument. Both hurricanes were catastrophic and both deserve Congress' attention. So the KS delegation wants budget cuts equal to the disaster relief? Fine. Let's take those cuts out of farm subsidies for KS farmers.

If we took all the Congressmen/women out of office for "sexual reasons" .... hell, there probably would be no one left. Mr. Vitter's "issues" are old news and he has reconciled with his family.

Harry Reid, on the other hand, is just an old gasbag looking for an opportunity to pour out his stupidity. For Harry, this is about the third time in as many months ! Maybe he needs a good enema ?

Vitter did something illegal and the teabaggers appaulded him for it. What moral standing does he have being in office? Why should he get a free pass while his party demanded Weiner quit over something that was NOT illegal. But then the Cons were nver very good at following their own standards.

Oh 25.5, What Clinton did was not illegal. He covered up something that was irrevelent. But that "lie" you talk about is nothing more than the Cons misinterperting the law and context in which President Clinton gave his testimony. (S*x had a different legal definition when testified as opposed to every day meanings.)

Factually, that makes Vitter a hypocritical whoremonger.

The nice thing about being a god fearing Christian is that you can pray away ANYTHING. Bow your head, put your hands together and say I'm sorry (only in your head of course) and it goes away and you are clean once again.

Then when you do the same thing again at the end of the week, no problem, pray it away again! Ah so good to be a god fearing man!
