Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday that Republicans will not support more revenue-raising measures in future fights over the nation's deficit, saying that President Barack Obama should lead on addressing spending cuts alone.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell talks about the GOP's desired policy changes in negotiations with President Barack Obama over the debt ceiling.
"That's over," McConnell said on NBC's Meet the Press when asked about possible new streams of revenue through taxes or tax code reforms.
"We've resolved this issue," McConnell said. "We don't have this problem because we tax too little, we have it because we spend way, way too much. So we've settled the tax issue and now we have to address the single biggest threat to America's future, and that's our excessive spending."
McConnell helped broker an eleventh-hour deal to avert the fiscal cliff last week, a bill that included the expiration of Bush-era tax rates for some of the wealthiest Americans. On Sunday, McConnell defended that deal, opposed by many House Republicans despite an overwhelming bipartisan deal in the Senate.
"Look, this was not a tax increase," he said of the fiscal cliff agreement. "It was not the kind of complete deal we'd like because we want to cut spending but we did stabilize taxes. The tax issue's behind us."
McConnell did not answer repeated questions about whether or not he would use the threat of a government shutdown to force Democrats' hand on spending cuts.
"I know what your question is," he told host David Gregory. "What I'm telling you is I have not given up on the president stepping up to the plate and tackling the biggest issue confronting the country.

"Our total national debt to GDP ratio is now about 105%. With this last bill Obama just signed, that will rise to near 125% over the next 10 years. That is just about where Greece and the other troubled economies in Europe stand."
Yes the debt is too high, we all know that but we all don't agree on what to do so lets look at when it started.
[img][/img]
This chart shows you that Reagan/Bush1 started the increasing debt, Clinton got it under control and actually reduced the debt. He also produced the first balanced budget in years.
[img][/img]
This chart is another example of the growth under Reagan/Bush1 and Clintons, adressing the debt. Once Bill was out of office and we turned America over to Haliburton the debt soared. Unless we restore tax rates to the pre Bush tax cuts we will never pay the debt off.
Please do not confuse debt with deficit spending. They are not the same. We might well reduce our deficit spending and never pay off our debt.
Duh, Congress controls spending, not the President!!!
Newt balanced the budget. Quit trying to rewrite history.
Kevin--But the current deficit is Obama's fault? Can't have it both ways. The president proposes budgets, congress acts. Clinton raised taxes, mostly on higher incomes, despite Republican objections, and that, plus prosperity, brought on the budget surplus. See http://www.factcheck.org/2008/02/the-budget-and-deficit-under-clinton/.
Hey don't cut my free Va healthcare and Pension.
But all other pensions are fine,,,hahahahahahahaha
Didn't seem to hesitate one iota to give his greedy lazy ass a raise on the backs of the working class, the one spot where most Americans believe the spending should be cut back. He thinks he is special, and I somewhat agree, he should be riding the small bus to his padded room where the nurse has to feed his feeble ass.
The congressional republican teabaggers have replaced Al Qaeda as America's worst enemy. They are now threatening to slit America's fiscal throat by defaulting on the debt they voted to create.
and Senator Obama voted against raising the debt ceiling saying it was a "sign of failed leadership." I guess that makes him equal to Al Qaeda also.
Kentucky receives 1.51 per tax dollar paid. Virginia receives 1.51 per tax dollar paid. South Dakota receives 1.53 per tax dollar paid. Alabama receives 1.66 per tax dollar paid. North Dakota receives 1.68 per tax dollar paid. West Virginia receives 1.76 per tax dollar paid. Louisiana receives 1.78 per tax dollar paid. Alaska receives 1.84 per tax dollar paid. Mississippi receives 2.02 per tax dollar paid.
Red states - hmmmmmm. Where's all my tea party fiscal conservatives. What a joke.
Doesn't the Federal Government control those dollars, not the States!!!
Neoconservatism is a branch of American conservatism that includes endorsement of political individualism, free markets and the assertive promotion of democracy and United States national interest in international affairs including by military means.
The Tea Party movement is an American political movement that advocates strict adherence to the United States Constitution, reducing U.S. government spending and taxes, and reduction of the U.S. national debt and federal budget deficit.
Losers. All of them
The day the GOP does something constructive and positive in Congress will signal the end of global warming. It will start with Hell freezing over.
Doesn't the Federal Government control those dollars, not the States!!!
Obama did not run up a debt or deficit. The president cannot approve or spend money. Congress ran up the debt and deficit. Both sides of the aisle are guilty of running up the debt and deficits. Congress appropriates and approves the money. The president can veto that, but he can't approve it without congress first approving it. What part of that is lost on everyoone.
PatinFC
Please explain how the Gov't pays for things when if runs out of the money that Congress authorized it to spend for the FY.
The Congress tells the Executive branck how much it spends,it doesn't tell it how fast to spend it.
Example.
Say Congress allocates $100 for Food Stamps for the FY. Suppose the Executive Branch spends that $100 in the first 6 months. How is the Food Stamp program funded for the other 6 months? Does the Congress pass a Bill for more spending or does the Executive borrow more money by selling Bonds to fund the Food Stamps for another 6 months?
So we can end use of the term "Bush tax cuts" based on that, correct?
Hey GOP retards
Shouldn't you low iq ass holes be watching football,Americans favorite stupid dumping down of a republicons even lower IQ?
Haha hehe hoho. Football blows
Wow Harley,Bully much??
you want REAL CHANGE...?????????????????
set up a taxpayers fund for politicians (you can use the money you keep giving to other countries that HATE you and that will use it against you anyway..)
make it illegal for your politicians to receive any money or any gifts from anyone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
only allow them to campaign for one month and they can only state the facts of what they stand for and what they have accomplished !!!!!!!!!!!!! ( the rest is all bull crap and blame anyway)
then, they truly will work for the american people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's the only way to stop the crooks from screwing you all !!!!!!!!!!!!
cut the evil off at the root, it's the only way your politicians will be forced to change !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
voting them out never works, the idiot voters put them right back in... learn from the mistakes
All true. Lmao
As a continuation to my post, President Bush didn't run up the debt and deficit either with the unpaid wars or Medicare Part B. Congress did that. Both sides of the aisle in both houses. All done according to the constitution - Congress appropriates the money for spending and the President either approves or vetos.
"and the President either approves or vetoes"...President George W. Bush SIGNED it, therefor he OWNS it with the rest of his debt ridden and bloody administration. History remembers Presidents not Congress' and the credit and blame lie with the President. I am so tired of Republicans blaming Congress for Reagan and the Bush's while trying to take credit for Clinton by saying it was Congress and at the same time blaming Obama for the current situation. President's are responsible and accountable for their time in office. Reagan OWNED the 80's,Clinton OWNED the 90's and yes George W. OWNED the 2000's. The jury is not in yet on Obama so we will see. President's are remembered not Congress'......Peace....
you are a fool, there is no leader in charge to control anything so the pigs run wild !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McConnell sounded like a broken record on Meet the Press. He kept repeating he same Los rhetoric as always, offering few concrete proposals. The only thing he said that made sense was cutting Medicare for the wealthy.
Republicans are lost in the woods, divided, and most of all, angry. Expecting cohesion and common sense from them would require that they question their direction. But, like lemmings, they are not likely to do so until after what is left of them hits bottom.
The President should lead with the cuts. The Repuglicans want them. They should lead with the cuts and endure the wrath of the voters in 2 years. Let the Republicans lead with the cuts. They want them. I voted for tax increases for the rich not cuts to normal people. Bring back the top marginal tax rates of 91% under Ike and JFK when the U.S. was a strong country and sent a man to the moon, a time known as the good old days. Today with much much lower top marginal rates we thumb rides with the Russians to the Space Station while the gap between the rich and the poor is the highest it has ever been.
Ludvig...You speak the truth. If only more people would study history. Good Post....Peace...
The tax issues are not done, as the GOP would like us to believe. Americans are still awaiting loophole reform and repeal of tax haven legislation for the rich who stow their profits in the Cayman Islands! The GOP refuses to tell us one loophole they will close! Why don't we start with that one? Hundreds of billions of tax dollars are kept out of our economy by the design of the GOP, who work for the elites who use the Caymans as their safety deposit bank! One week before our last election, George Bush was keynote speaker in the Cayman Islands, putting on seminars on how to shelter profits, so that Uncle Sam can not tax profits! Does this not prove the GOP is the leader of the elitists in our nation, without allegiance to Americans? What do you think?
Jack
The Republicans wanted to increase Taxes on the Wealthy by closing Loopholes and reducing Deductions LAST MONTH! OBAMA SAID NO! He wanted Tax Rate increases. Now you want to close Loopholes? Why wasn't that done last month??
Slo...They gave him a choice of either one or the other. We need both. Obama went with rate increase because it was the larger number...Peace..
History
But wouldn't the Rich just hide more of their money in those loopholes? How does that increase revenues?
I was my understanding that Obama wanted to raise Rates to increase Revenues. He said so during the campaign. Boehenr said OK but instead of raising rates lets cut loopholes and deductions. Obama insisted on raising rates. Now Obama is saying cut loopholes and deductions!!
The president himself said that he wanted a "balanced" approach to our nation's financial problems. Okay. He got the tax increases that he whined for. Now it is time for the spending cuts to "balance" things out. Anything less will expose him as a liar who only cares about perpetuating the democraps childish insistence on having things their way. Maybe it is time for barak and harry to quit letting nancy "tea bag" them. Yes, she thinks she has a bigger set than both of them put together and she is out to prove she is right.
harley,
do you really think all the problems in america are caused by the gop only...???????? and, if so it goes to show what a fool you are to think all the democrats are straight arrows...
roflmaooooooooooooooooooooooooo
totally delusional thinking, they are all to blame and so are the american people for allowing the pigs to run wild !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what president...????????
Truth: Social Security has been used as a banker for years. Both parties are guilty. It has nothing to do with the budget and should not even be discussed as a budget item. Congress has been and is spending money as if there is no end to the supply. We need to cut out waste, stop spending on special interests and giving away money we have to borrow. Also, we need a balanced budget amendment to the constitution to force congress and the president to operate as if they have good sense. Part of any budget should be provisions for repaying Social Security and the U.S. Postal system. Yes, they have been 'borrowing' from the USPS, too. I know many of you posting are, obviously, down on the Republican party but the Democrats are just as bad, if not worse. They are proving that they don't want to get spending under control. It's spend, spend, spend.
If republicans want spending cuts they should say exactly what they want to cut. They don't have the balls to do so and they will whine that the president should be the one to specify the cuts.
It wouldn't matter if Republican say what cuts need to be made,Obama and the left will accuse them of starving children or putting our Country at risk or pushing Gma in to the street,so let the King be the first to say what cuts he would bring to the table,You know be a leader for once instead of a coward crybaby that whines and stomps and points fingers when things don't go his way,....blah blah Bush,Republicans,TeaParty,Guns, videos ect ect....
all i'm saying is americans need to stop playing the games the politicians and news media has trained you all to play!!!!!!!!!!!!! the blame the other party game !!!!!!!!!!!!!
dont you see, that is the way they train you not to hold them accountable??????????
quit falling for their tricks!!!!!!!!! demand they work together for the good of the people!!!!!!!!!!!
demand REAL CHANGE stop allowing them to receive any money or gifts from anyone but an american taxpayers fund !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's the only way you'll stop the crooks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
