McConnell on tax fight: 'That's over'

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday that Republicans will not support more revenue-raising measures in future fights over the nation's deficit, saying that President Barack Obama should lead on addressing spending cuts alone.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell talks about the GOP's desired policy changes in negotiations with President Barack Obama over the debt ceiling.

"That's over," McConnell said on NBC's Meet the Press when asked about possible new streams of revenue through taxes or tax code reforms.

"We've resolved this issue," McConnell said. "We don't have this problem because we tax too little, we have it because we spend way, way too much. So we've settled the tax issue and now we have to address the single biggest threat to America's future, and that's our excessive spending."

McConnell helped broker an eleventh-hour deal to avert the fiscal cliff last week, a bill that included the expiration of Bush-era tax rates for some of the wealthiest Americans. On Sunday, McConnell defended that deal, opposed by many House Republicans despite an overwhelming bipartisan deal in the Senate.

"Look, this was not a tax increase," he said of the fiscal cliff agreement. "It was not the kind of complete deal we'd like because we want to cut spending but we did stabilize taxes. The tax issue's behind us."

McConnell did not answer repeated questions about whether or not he would use the threat of a government shutdown to force Democrats' hand on spending cuts.

"I know what your question is," he told host David Gregory. "What I'm telling you is I have not given up on the president stepping up to the plate and tackling the biggest issue confronting the country.

We've seen this song and dance number from the jackasses before.

Raise taxes today & we'll maybe think about cutting spending some day & it never happens.

Well, those days are over.

Actually, I think I'll watch some football today and laugh about how Obama got snookered again by Republicans. They have been trying for 12 years to get the Bush tax cuts made "permanent". Obama just signed a law making them permanent for 99.3% of taxpayers. Even billionaires got a tax cut. What a hoot!

Well, there will be some positive economic effects, to boot.

I, for one, am going back to work now that it's certain my taxes won't go up. And forming a corporation so I can shield as much as possible from government theft. Looks like I get to put $50K/year away pre-tax that way & I'll put everything humanly possible through the corporation. A one man corporation and a total sham, mind you. But I'd be very foolish not to do it. The doors to tax avoidance heaven get thrown open wide when you incorporate, even if it's just "me, myself, and I".

Feisty, you must be the welfare Queen with noting to do but set and wait for any morsel of info about Obama and his Democrat followers. You people have to learn it's the young people of today and tomorrow that are going to pay for the reckless spending that is going on. Yes, Bush did leave one hell o a debt, but Obama has spent more in his first 4 yeras than ALL presidents from Washington to G W Bush. You need to take a class in economics 101 you can't spend your way out of debt. Just like you, when you don't have the money to shop you stop or at least slow down until you have the money. Quit being so damn stupid!

As I figured, this being a msnbc website that it would be dominated by liberal welfare rags. Everyone poking fun at McConnell about his views are only those living off the sweat and blood of others. As long as you get your food stamps and welfare checks, you don't give a $hit about the rest of the country. You see how things are going overseas, people are fed up with supporting deadbeat freeloaders and that will eventually happen here. So what are you going to do when the food stamps and checks are gone? It's all funny as long as all this free stuff is coming in, but when china decides not to give us any more money, guess what? your stamps and checks are gone. It will happen sooner rather than later. The good old U.S.A. is just about run it's course as the leader in the world, we are already on that downward slide. Want a hint, you freeloaders might want to watch that tv series "doomsday preppers". That will be the ONLY way you survive.

Judge - not to worry. Credit markets will now force the federal government to do the spending cuts and changes needed to Medicare and other entitltment programs. We are not Greece - there is nobody big enough to bail us out. As interest on our national debt skyrockets the era of big government will end.

I won't speak for Peter, but I come here to see how the gullible and weak minded some people are. A person that hates FOX, hates them for exposing the lies and cover ups by this administration. Sure you will hate a news site when they do not tell the news the way you want it.

You will never hear news from a bunch of Obama loving freaks, and that is what this site is all about.

When you have someone as incompetent as Obama to defend with such a lousy record in office, his supporters are left with few options other than making excuses, personal attacks and trying to shift blame onto someone else. Most important is to do everything possible to avoid talking about Obama’s terrible record over these last 4 years.

Cut spending start with the 5 million dollar vacations the pres takes, when is the last time the average person on here took a trip to Hawaii. My own opinion everyone is congress needs to be voted out, why in this world do we keep them in there for more than a few years, as voters were stupid. The rich will get richer the poor get poorer and the ones that suck off the government will never work. The politicians are all in it together you can not tell the difference between a Republican and a Democrat, they may say different things but they vote the same as shown on the fiscal cliff deal that was just done. I say if they have been there a term send them home the next time, stupid on our part to have career politicians. We are told by the government what to do more and more, our freedoms are slipping away what little we have left. How much money do you have left over after paying the bills now, has it not got a lot worse over the last several years. Ten years ago I could go on a little vacation but not now it takes every penny to get by and thats the way with the most people I know now. I don't know how we make it better but I know one thing I sure wont vote for the incumbent until I have a little spare change in my pocket. Why in this world do they not pass a balance budget amendment where they can't spend no more than they take in that is just common sense to me and if there is any extra pay on the debt. The deal that kept us from going over the fiscal cliff guess what if you work, you pay more taxes now than you did before, well when it cost me more money to go to work than I make guess I will just stay home too.

It's also obvious you listen to Sean Hannity, who can't get enough of comparing us to Greece. Here's a hint, do your own research and you'll find how UTTERLY RIDICULOUS that claim actually is.

Our total national debt to GDP ratio is now about 105%. With this last bill Obama just signed, that will rise to near 125% over the next 10 years. That is just about where Greece and the other troubled economies in Europe stand.

Average Total National Debt as % of GDP (Data Source – OMB):

                42.8% - 8 Reagan years

                58.5% - 4 Bush1 years

                64.2% - 8 Clinton years

                62.6% - 8 Bush2 years

                96.3% - 4 Obama years (102.6% for 2011, est. 105% for 2012)

Oh and by the way Mitch, most of your Tea Party colleagues come from States that receive significantly more in federal tax dollars then paid in. My suggestion for deficit reduction is simple, pay your fair share before putting the squeeze on our seniors and vets.

Every time he was asked about the GOP's role in fiscal issues his smug answer was to attack the president's leadership. I don't remember a whisper out of the guy when the president from his party was implementing massive tax cuts while starting two wars. Hypocrite.

How many of you know about unfunded pension plans. The pension plans I refer to are backed by our govt. "Our govt"....that means the American Taxpayer. There is no way for these plans to be able to pay out what they have promised to pay out to retiring individuals which means the govt will have to print more money to be able to pay them. Print more money?.....more debt?.....Hmmm. Sounds like trouble to me. Does GREECE enter you mind? Does DEFAULT enter your thoughts?

How many of you understand that the financial markets have created hundreds of TRILLIONS of dollars in derivatives which they trade like currency. No real value there just another form of "money".

How many recognize that world currencies, and currencies are DEBT, pay interest which creates debt on the debt. More money is created through money which is already just an illusion of value. It is history's greatest PONZI SCHEME.

Meanwhile the govt has the media diverting people's attention with much more trivial matters like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security while the fail to mention things that should TERRIFY the public. That monetary scheme is the equivalent of having a 1000 lbs of dynamite with a lit fuse under the bed of every household in the world. We don't know how long the fuse is but it just has to blow up sooner.....or later. I repeat....it has to blow up.

It is not the fault of the current bunch of inept politicians. There is nothing they can do about it that would cause the outcome to be much, if any, different.

I personally know this and yet I do nothing about it. I refuse to become a Doomsday Prepper. I am just hoping it doesn't blow up in my lifetime. Let some other generation deal with it. For me its......PARTY ON GARTH!!!

What strikes me the hardest is all members of Congress and the administration REALLY do recognize that too many Americans remain at heart selfish. "Don't raise MY taxes, don't cut my future SS or Medicare, don't cut [fill in the blank], but stop spending"....This should raise some hackles across the board, but flat out common sense says under no circumstances can anyone or anything eat their cake and have it too.....Someone much smarter than me I assume has done the math, and would love to know how money money would Americans have to pay per person to pay all the interest on the current national debt, AND still pay for everything people think the government should pay for?
