Former Nebraska lawmaker, Chuck Hagel, is reportedly in line to be nominated for U.S. secretary of defense. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
Senators on Sunday indicated a tough confirmation fight for former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel, President Barack Obama's reported pick to be the next Secretary of Defense.
On NBC's "Meet the Press," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Republicans in the upper chamber would treat Hagel "fairly" but that his past statements on Israel and Iran will be subject to tough scrutiny.
"I think he'll be subjected to the same kind of oversight hearings that any nominee for such an important position would expect," McConnell said. "And his views with regard to Israel, for example, and Iran and all the other positions that he's taken over the years will be very much a matter of discussion in the confirmation process."
Sen. Angus King, who sits on the Armed Services Committee, previews the upcoming nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel to become secretary of state.
"I think there will be a lot of tough questions for Sen. Hagel, but he will be treated fairly by Republicans in the Senate," he added.
That statement fell short of McConnell's past praise for his fellow Republican, a Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served in the Senate for three terms. When Hagel left the Senate, McConnell called him "a clear voice on foreign policy and national security."
During a pre-taped appearance on ABC's "This Week," McConnell appeared to back off that view, saying only that Hagel has been "outspoken" on foreign policy issues. "The question we will be answering if he's the nominee is 'do his views make sense for that particular job?'" he said.
Hagel has earned foes on both sides of the aisle for past statements about Israel -- notably his comment about how the "Jewish lobby" tries to influence lawmakers in D.C. -- as well as for his calls for direct negotiations with Palestinian group Hamas. He has also voted against some Iran sanctions and was heavily critical of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell discusses the goals his party is aiming toward in the upcoming Congress.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called the reported pick an "in your face nomination" by the president, while new Sen. Ted Cruz blasted Obama for ignoring bipartisan criticism of his reported pick for the Pentagon job.
"This is a president who has drunk the tea," Cruz said on Fox News Sunday "He's high on re-election right now."
Cruz said that he is "concerned" about Hagel's past statements.
Newly-elected independent Sen. Angus King of Maine said on "Meet the Press" that he would "reserve judgement" until the confirmation process begins, saying he believes generally that the president should be given considerable leeway to fill his cabinet as he sees fit.
"But I'm going to want to ask some serious questions and hear from Senator Hagel about the issues," he added. "He's a guy with a distinguished record and I'm going to listen to the answers."
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, a freshman Democrat from North Dakota, said that the looming fight over the expected nomination merely highlights the Washington gridlock disliked by the American public.
"Chuck Hagel is a tremendous patriot and statesman," she said on ABC. "He hasn't had a chance to speak for himself, so why all the prejudging? I don't know."

Ya know, perhaps it would come off sounding as a bad joke. But considering all the partisan bickering, fights between the House and Senate, and even fights within political parties; perhaps the only Hagel these guys would want is a now deceased Georg Hegel. Those who have some familiarity with his philosophies wrt the dialectic, and developing historic change through conflict might get my reference here....
Back to this article, it is no surprise that a president that is more sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians is appointing a guy that feels the same.
I may not agree with every Israeli position, but I will stay on the side of God and support his children.
The alternative is to support the side that don't even recognize the right of Israel to even exist!
How can liberals actually side with the folks that want to wipe the other side of the map? Aren't they suppose to be the people that are more flexible and understanding?
I guess consistency don't matter when ideology trumps their better nature.
John,
Maybe it is because the majority of Americans are more worried about America, than with Israel. Many of Americans aren't forsaking God and such...they are stating that Israel is it's own country and they aren't running this country, Americans are. Can we worry about America for a change, and not what other countries feelings, security, and foreign leaders want America to do.
John,
I think you fail to recognize that not all Americans think that "god" is on any one side. Many think that "god" was made by man and many others think that if there is in fact a "god", he sure did a crappy job of creation. Why would any "god" create all to oppose each other throughout history?
The only "consistency" you refer to, is the consistency of man hating man in the name of "god".
John--The issues of the Mideasts are very complex. I don't expect you to understand them and would not expect you to understand them even if I spent hours explaining them to you. But, just out of curiousity, do you acknowledge that Moslem Palestinians are also God's children and that Moslem Palestinians worship the same God as Jewish Israelis (or American Christians, for that matter)?
I am worried about America and I wouldn't want an anti-Semite in charge of anything any more than I would want an any other kind of hater in positions of power.
Why can't we appoint people that actually love their fellow man instead of all these anti-this and anti-that people that this president has been appointing from day 1.
Has he appointed A SINGLE PERSON that has worked with the other side on ANYTHING?
It's a shame that our first black president has done more to divide this country than to bring it together! I had hope that he would actually bring us all together but I had no idea who he actually was...maybe you should look into that, I DID.
John--We've already established that your sources for your interpretation of Obama are pathetic fonts of misinformation. Speaking of that, why do you avoid answering my question posed in 418.3?
By the way, many Jewish Isrealis appose the policies of the Likud government. Are they also anti-Semitic?
John in #418.4.
He is a mixed-race President. Perhaps you see what you want to see, no?
As I recall, Obama appointed Jon Huntsman to serve as Ambassador to China. Huntsman would still be there had his ambition not got the better of him.
Does that qualify as "single"?
Old Vet, good point, and yes I understand that we are all god's children....
my point is that we should stand with those that want peace as opposed to war, and if YOU understand the position of both sides you know that while the Palestinians have reasons to be mad, they don't have a right to wipe out another people.
It seems that when you get to talking to people that side with the Palestinians, they are largely people that are full of hate and if you really get them talking honestly, they hate Jews anyway.
Maybe you know some genuine people with good intentions but those are not the people that are running the show my friend.
John,
Once again, just what have the republicans agreed on with this president? Who has been hating and obstructing? This president has reached across the aisle, and introduced and implemented many republican/conservative ideas and policies...just for the same republican/conservatives to vote no and disagree with. I don't hear many democrats going against this nominee, only the republicans, and you stating anti propaganda. I have read you stating anti messages, yet, you are stating the president won't work with anyone. What would you call Hillary, she has worked with the other side, along with Joe Biden, and also Petreaus. I think you are forgetting about Jon Huntsman too.
Vet,I'm sure you could go on hour after hour spewing out some inane b.s. to dazzle us with your mythical intellect, but thank you for sparing us the jr.high civics lessons. So as you said earlier, goodnight.
print money,
Your comments are becoming as counterfeit as your screen name. Give it a rest, please.
John--You should be aware that Yasir Arafat, speaking for the Palestinian authority, explicity recognized Israel's right to exist. See http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/Foreign%20Relations/Israels%20Foreign%20Relations%20since%201947/1984-1988/419%20Statement%20by%20Yasser%20Arafat-%2014%20December%201988. and http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Peace/recogn.html and http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19960425&slug=2325940. Those articles and documents are from 1988, 1993, and 1996. Fat lot of good that did the Palestinians. In fact, the Israeli response was to increase settlements on the West Bank.
I've studied the Holocaust. If I were an Israeli, I'd been mighty touchy about Israeli security. On the other hand, like many Israelis, I'm concerned that the present government wants perpetual war for perpetual peace and seems to refuse to accept the two-state solution. It's a shame you've had bad experiences with people who favor the Palestinians. My university history department has three Jewish professors, one of whom is a Mideast expert, another a Holocaust expert, and the third an expert on Jewish history. Two oppose current Israeli government policy. I don't think they're anti-Semitic any more than the Jews in Israel who oppose the Likud government's policies are anti-Semitic.
I understand, but isn't it hard to support a 2 state solution when every week you can find Palestinian speeches decrying their mere existence? I'm sympathetic to the average citizen over there but their leaders DON'T want peace and you should know it.
John, their leaders don't want peace because of religious hatred.
"god" loves all as long as you believe that he loves 'YOU" more than others. lol
What a joke.
John--No, you don't understand. Did you read the documents? What did you understand them to say?
The GOP will now show us how they can devour their own like jackals or hyenas.
BTW: OFF TOPIC
The other day on an article discussing Rep. Barnie Franks' consideration for John Kerry's seat...um maybe I should phrase that a little different. Anyway in the comments someone posted that Frank was responsible for the Great Recession in that he blocked Republican efforts to bring attention to Fannie Mae. Are we already trying to rewrite History or is this just Neo-Con plants in the comments trying to misled readers?
I have always respected Rep Franks. He has shown the world in the face of antagonism how to live a life as a homesexual with self respect and dignity.
You can get a republican re-write of history on Mike Huchabee's web site for 10 bucks a month.
Einstein,
I enjoy Barney Frank's rhetoric and respect his views on a number of issues. I think that he'd be a fine interim Senator in Massachussetts, just as long as he steps aside come election time.
In my opinion, Frank has fought too many pitched battles with the Right in the last five years to be dismissed for the seat out of hand, especially on the eve of another deficit ceiling battle.
I've always loved the way Republicans blame the Democrat Frank for something that happened when the Republicans controlled congress. That rather says that Republicans can't be trusted to do something right even when they are in control. Hmm. That may be correct.
Old Vet, YOU may have established that Dinesh is "not a credible resource", but it all makes perfect sense when you put everything together...his mentors like communist Marshal Davis, sending back the bust of Churchill, appointing communist Van Jones, appointing socialists and anti-capitalists to positions of power...
I would spell out much more for you but you don't seem to want to know the truth anyway.
John,
Give it up.....seems only you and a few others think that Obama appoints all this anti-American cabinet members. I believe you are in the minority on this subject; this is America, and we all are free to have opinions and beliefs. Not many are agreeing with you....we happen to accept that others may not agree with every opinion, belief, or position of every nominee, but agree that nobody fits the criteria that you are seeking, strict ideology and beliefs.
You can thank the media for not telling you about these appointees, but they are who they are and if you don't know that maybe you should look it up yourself instead of assuming you're getting the truth from your media outlets.
As far as ideology, I don't care if we agree, I only care that are elected or appointed officials don't want to transform this country into something else.
We have done very well compared to the rest of the world and I just don't want to see our decline, do you?
John--I'm tired of repeating this stuff. Van Jones is and was not a communist. The notion that he was a communist existed only in the febrile mind of Glenn Beck, that paragon of mental health. As for sending back the bust of Churchill, it was on loan. Here's what the British embassy said, "The bust of Sir Winston Churchill, by Sir Jacob Epstein, was lent to the George W Bush administration from the UK’s Government Art Collection, for the duration of the Presidency. When that administration came to an end so did the loan; the bust now resides in the British Ambassador’s Residence in Washington DC. The White House collection has its own Epstein bust of Churchill, which President Obama showed to Prime Minister Cameron when he visited the White House in March." http://www.mediaite.com/online/british-embassy-confirms-krauthammer-right-white-house-wrong-churchill-bust-returned-in-2009/. The bust was replaced by one of Abraham Lincoln. Seems right to me that an African-American president might want to have a bust of the Great Emancipator in his office. Frank Marshall Davis (not Marshall Davis) died when Obama was 15. Davis supported Henry Wallace's Progressive Party in 1948. Henry Wallace was the former VP of the US. There is no evidence that Davis ever belonged to the Communist Party. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Marshall_Davis The notion that Obama appointed socialists to positions of power is simply bullsh*t. Look, your sources have been denigrated by conservatives and are worthless pieces of crap, a bad conspiracy theory, to quote one of the reviews. Read the reviews. Stop being taken in. Do some critical thinking.
John,
I don't think America is declining and is a great country. I still think our country is founded on freedoms and a constitution, and that all presidents and elected officials still abide by those freedoms and laws. This country functions best when not driven by strict ideology, but by a diverse, cooperate, and bi-partisan foundation. What part of bi-partisan cooperation that has been going on, nominating a member of the opposite party is so bad?
Wow, talk about rewriting history!
Van Jones was a "self-avowed" communist and he gave many anti-capitalist speeches against this country, and when Valerie Jarret was on C-span and asked about Van Jones she lit up like a Christmas tree and said they have been following him since his days back in wherever...
So they knew exactly how he felt about America and she said they were "very excited" to be able to bring him in!
You can believe that garbage about the Churchill bust but I was paying attention at the time and nobody in the media said anything about some LOAN...that would have been their response at the time if it were true.
John,
You realize that many of us can bring up many in W. Bush's cabinet that had troubling histories and past associations with strict ideology. Many think that W. Bush trampled on the constitution, broke international treaties, and brought America into decline. Just because you believe this stuff, doesn't mean everybody does. Were you this critical of W. Bush's administration and appointees?? My guess is, you think W., Bush was a great president and had a great administration. That is called different political positions and beliefs, yours isn't any better or worse than those who disagree with you.
I hate to bust your bubble but I would have been on his case too if I was paying attention to politics at the time, because I don'y care for politics and I hate how both sides just keep defending their people when they screw up.
I can understand why you would think that because that seems to be the norm in these places, one side against the other! That's why we can never get anywhere and the people are disgusted with politics...it's like all notions of genuine honesty are all gone.
I'm not a fan of Hannity or Allan Combs...these guys that can't give credit to the other side when deserved and vice versa just lose all credibility with me.
John--So the British Embassy is lying about the Churchill bust? The citation I gave you was from the media at the time. As for van Jones, show me any of his statements in which he said he was/is a communist. You said he was self-avowed. Give me a link to where he avowed it.
Well, that explains a lot. You haven't been paying attention to politics until just recently...and are hypocritical of this administration only. Why don't you study W. Bush's administration policies and his cabinet members, whose ideologies, statements, positions on the issues,....and start critiquing them, before lambasting this administration. Many other administrations, both republican and democratic had radicals in them, and no administration does everything great all the time. They all have had critics and haters, who felt that they were destroying America, nothing new with your post. Just would like to hear some criticism from you regarding those.
John--You've had plenty of time to find a link to van Jones saying he was a "self-avowed communist." Here's what Wikipedia says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Jones. Note the article indicates there were allegations that Jones had associations with "Marxist" organizations (the more intelligent commentators know that not all Marxists are communists). Further, allegations are not facts.
I'm giving up on you. Congratulations. You are one of very few I actually gave up on. However, I give you documents to read and you either don't read them or can't understand what you read. I ask you to provide real evidence to support your statements and you can't do so, yet repeat your statements as if, by repeating them, you can make them true. In fact, I'm not sure you know what evidence is and how it is utilized to establish the truth of anything. Not to be unkind, but you appear to be blissfully ignorant and doggedly determined to remain that way.
John812:
O' PLease spell it out. I am listening. I can barely wait. And after that its my turn.
Okay!... we GOT it, Repubs... you're "tough". Now can we please get on with the business of running the country? Any way you all could find your way clear to help with that? Now that we've all acknowledged how "tough" you are?
Anyone not steeped in their own politics should be able to see that Obama is intentionally or otherwise assisting in the establishment of the Muslim caliphate...
Whether it's God's word coming to pass or just men playing out what was written in the bible, we will see "Revelations" play out much sooner thanks to Obama and I don't look forward to that!
Anyone not steeped in their own religious BS sees through your crap.
Believe in your Bible, believe in the tooth fairy, believe in Santa Claus... all good. lol
Okay,
Now you are really playing out the republican/conservative/Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity bull pukey. You are starting to sound like the birthers and end of the world religious nuts. The world did not end with 12/21/2012 and revelations doesn't have an end date. It's getting late and your post are getting more paranoid and ultra religious.
Nah, I wouldn't care if he was born somewhere else. We have legal immigrants that LOVE this country MUCH more than some of the ingrates born and raised here that don't even LIKE this country (you can thank our schools for much of that)!
I only care about his loyalties and they don't lie with the American people...just use your head and ask yourself, if you care about "the little guy" you wouldn't compel the least among us to BUY insurance when they can't afford it in the first place.
In fact most of what he has done has made life harder for the little guy.
John,
Another misconception you have....you only have to buy insurance if you don't have any and your employer doesn't offer it. The cost is minimal because it will be a group insurance policy sponsored by the state or federal government, or pay a nominal fee; personal choice and responsibility. Can you name any policies that have been implemented that make it harder for the little guy, examples please. Can you name and give examples of his not being with the American people??
John, even though you have failed to respond to points against you, let me set you straight here.
The "little guy" wanted insurance and was often denied for various reasons. At the same time, the "little guy" was carried by us all. Hospitals passed the bill on by higher rates to the insured. If you are insured, then you should be happy that the pool has deepened. Get it?
John -
During the Bush Administration he had 60 people who had dual-ctizenship with
Israel
It's no wonder why BeBe wanted Romney for president - look who his Foreign
Advisors were - Bolton, Dan Senor, Coffer Black, Eliot Cohen and it goes on 17
who were all on Bush's team - all Neo-Cons and all have dual-citizenship with
Israel
Now as far as Hagel goes - he is the only Republican I ever admired aside
from Lincoln and Eisenhower
Think about this two Decorated Viet Nam war hero's Secretary of State John
Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel
Mitch McTurtle (Draft Dodger) and the rest of his group's heads are spinning
- good!
I firmly believe you cannot serve two masters and any one with a dual-citizenship to any country should not serve in any capacity for the United States
John--Why didn't you respond to my question and request in posts 421.8 and 418.14 ? Is that because any response would demonstrate that you can't think logically and find or apply evidence? By the way, by going into the Moslem Caliphate bullsh*t, you've really crossed the line into blue helmet/black helicopter land. I thought maybe you could carry on an intelligent conversation, but you can't. But we all have fun bashing your bull and calling out your false statements. The question is, why do you continue to take such abuse?
I can only repeat what I wrote before. You appear to be blissfully ignorant and doggedly determined to remain that way.
John,
I'm going to be a good deal less polite than the earlier responders. You are either completely insane or completely full of sh*t.
You're an idiot, probably why you believe in something that doesn't exist.
John, why would you not want to see the coming of God. Revelations is God descending into this world to bring peace. I believe what we have now with the NRA and the neo-cons accusing the left of staging the shooting in Newton to steal the guns out of peaceful citizen's hands...is far worse than anything to come in Revelations. I believe the state of this world...with the shooting in Norway and the shooting in Newton is far worse than Revelations and by the way you sound I am certain you realize you will be saved from the turmoil in the Rapture. Which brings up another point...Tammie Faye's husband. You know the former Evangelist (and felon) who is now selling survivalist gear on Christian Stations. It puzzles me...why would a Christian need survivalist gear for the second coming...wouldn't they open arms to the Rapture and be shuttled away before the violence.
But then again I wonder how Jim Baker once came up with the idea of a Christian Amusement Park....did they do any kind of surveying to see what was needed in society, or did they pray about it, or did they just say to hell with the 17 million children starving just in our country alone...what Christians need is an amusement park...and of course those nice solid gold toilet fixtures for Tammie and I.
Mike that is what hurts me the most in people like John: they misrepresent God as well as polotics and try to convince others to the point that so many turn from God in mistake of who they are arguing with. I was gay in my teens. I was refused baptism by the Methodist Church. I was going to be a minister. I had talked about going to Seminary. And yet when the Methodist Convention bared homosexuals from the ministry I refused to take a vow to the Church when I was going to be baptized. So they refused to baptize me. It took me thirty years to get baptized by an Episcopalian priest. Every church along the way refused. What I am trying to say is that when I was seventeen I did not realize that I could disagree with my church and not be disagreeing with God. I did not see the distinction clearly. I think that was the gest of your comment that God does not exist. HE does. It is John that it is figment of imagination...
Well, my clock has run it's course for tonight.
Peace to all. Hope saying that doesn't make me sound like an old hippie. lol
I'll follow you as soon as John satisfies my curiousity as to what bizarre, utterly insane thing he'll say next.
Well, nothing strange from John to keep us amused. Time to toddle off. Peace out.
They need to keep the powder dry for debt and gun control. They should give Hagel the blessing and let the dems fight over him and then start calling them the party of NO.
So,,,,,,,Exactly who is the GOP loyal to??
Their voters? (obviously not)
The USA? (obviously not)
Israel? (possibly?)
Lobbiest? (obviously)
Obama needs to throw them a complete curveball and
nominate someone they have never even heard of, It
would be hilarious watching them chase their own tail
around circles ONE MORE TIME!!!!!
But then again,,,,,We NEED a Sec of Defense who takes
every single word Israel says with a grain of salt so we
do not end up in another Iraq fiasco searching for what
wasn't there in the first place.
The party of "NO" is about to say "NO" again. Raise your hand if you're surprised! More nails in their coffin!
Hagel refused to march in the jack boot parade that the GOP demands!
Wow....shocker; the GOP is going to oppose another Obama nominee (and a fellow Republican).
This quote from McConnell says it all.....when Hagel had no connection to Obama, he was "a clear voice".....now that he's tied to Obama, he'll be torn apart by his own party. Surprise, surprise...100% politics from the GOP.
The GOP has been wrong on pretty much everything when it comes to foreign policy....Obama has been right on just about everything. WHY should the general populous give a **** what the GOP has to say?
I generally don't reply to my own comment...but when I reread this again; it also came to me that the GOP has been wrong on everything regarding the economy, as well. Also, they've been wrong, historically, on the debt/deficit....and on domestic policy etc.. I pretty much could've just said, "the GOP has been wrong on pretty much everything" and left it at that.
Mother of freedom grasp securely thy torch, An indolent beguiler tarnishes thy porch Whilst this, his undoing shall it be, redolent the smoke lamps light shed on thee. yea tho ye be chided among the failed contrite, your iniquities will if be unveiled too austere in sight. yet ye find thee only self in woe, on the morrow our world's crimson tears doth flow, oracle of deceit find thy sullen ignominy dour, as the Eagle, "your charge" weakens by the hour...

Yes, you could have......... could have..............could have.....................echo
Had his daddy got him out of combat, like Robertson & Little Bush,or he evaded like Romney & Cheney, these "new" republicans would love him....
Um, Ted? You're a teabagger. Isn't this a good thing?
Obama's Secretary of Defense has to toe the Republican line on Israel and Iraq? Give me a break. BTW, McTurtle, in case you haven't Hagel was right about Iraq and you were wrong. Just because he had the guts to change his views doesn't disqualify him, even if it did embarrass you.
So what? Hagel is the guy the president wants. That it's a slap in the face to the Party of No is an added bonus.
What Chuck Hagel knows that Schumer, Graham, and their allies don't is this, the demographics of the dead from the vietnam war, that he and his brother were called to fight.
269 Jews died,
28,000 Catholics died,
29,000 Protestants died, for THIS country.
He knows that we don't owe Israel. Israel owes us.
Senators, do your job for America, not the Jewish Lobby. It is exceedingly clear that McConnel and Graham have been bought and paid for with their 30 pieces of silver.
While I disagree with Hagel on certain social issues, I do think he will make a good Secretary of Defense. He would put the service men and women first in his decisions as opposed to most of the former Secretaries of Defense. Dastardly Dick Cheney mus be having a cow over his appointment as this definitely can't be good for Halliburton. Dick never saw a war he didn't like, he just was against any personal participation. The military/industrial complex will be out in full force to scuttle his appointment.
Eisenhower did warn us about this military industrial complex and his warning came true, keeping our military smaller will keep Presidents from military adventures in the future, when military aircraft, ships cost so much its impossible to keep the numbers from going down, we have bankrupted our country in trying to keep them up.
I have no personal feelings about Hagel one way or the other. I will say that several things are obvious. 1. Hagel is a decorated war hero who is having to pass the scrutiny to be secretary of defense by a vast majority of men and women who have never even put a uniform on. 2. It is the president's choice and it is his secretary so, like all presidents, he ought to have who he wants barring something egregious. I don't think republicans would like him any better no matter who he picks. If I were Hagel and had any political aspirations I would not be a republican associated with a democrat white house. Republicans are just looking for a fight they can win. I don't blame them.
Its not a huge surprise that the neo-cons do not like Hagel as Hagel only believes in using force as a very last option and the neo-cons believe that force is first and only option. But considering what the neo-cons track record is on these matters they are the last ones who should be preaching. Hagel would be an excellent choice.
I can see why repubs hate Hagel. It reminds them of their moderate past and they hate their past
