Whoo Hooo!

The Dew Drop Inn is back and open for business! lol

Not only did we survive the Mayan Apocalypse we also got through the Fiscal Cliff debacle (for now at least)...

First round of drinks tonight are compliments of Floyd & Betty - pick your poison carefully! ;o)

Shout out & thanks to our hosts of this little piece of cyberspace for allowing us to share in spirited discussions on all things political!

Too bad Republican Senator Crapo(what a fitting name for a Repub!) won't be showcased on the new Lock Up. The Mormon Senator plead guilty to DWI charges and basically got a slap on the wrist. Just goes to show you that Mormons who profess not to throw back the liquor are nothing but liars.

Definitely good to see both FR's TWA and The Dew Drop Inn back. Time to celebrate the new year, and thank our First Read hosts for still providing us with the best place to talk politics. Cheers!

I don't know but FR's Andy reminded me of Joe Walsh, same tough guy talk with anger issues.

Previewing the priorities of the new Congress, including the national debt, guns, and immigration.

=========================

Were you speaking about Democrats in Congress because I'm definitely having trouble identifying Republican Congressmen/Senators who are pushing "guns" as a legislative priority.

Oh and when you cash your paycheck (or unemployment check whatever the case may be) at the DDI to pay for the drinks, don't forget to look at the stub and the change in deductions. It may spoil a little of the celebration but it is what you voted for.

It makes the celebration even better because it is what we supported, what we voted for and it is the right thing to do.

Make that a Vodka Martini, shaken icy cold, with a twist. Don't forget to feed the twist scraps to the sour lemon group, aka TTTH, still crying over the end of the tax holiday for FICA deductions.

If the request lines are now open a "KDDI", I want to be bona-fide PIG and HOG the beat box with all these requests for my pal who is feeling green orange around the gills:

Smokey Robinson, "Tears of a Clown"

Jackie Wilson "Lonely Teardrops"

"?" and the Mysterions "96 tears"

Little Anthony and the Imperials "Tears on my Pillow".

Then, for good measure, I'd like to have you play one for the wife of the guy that's orange around the gills, this country oldie by Loretta Lynn, "Don't Come Home a Drinkin (With Lovin on your Mind)"

Well, since I have to work both days this weekend, I'd better be the Designated Driver here, so guess I'll just have a sarsparilla - or maybe a YooHoo so I can drink to all the Yahoo newborns in our midst?

Oh, and I see Drive-by finally showed up to take back the deejay job - well, too bad, like Speaker Boehner, I'm not giving up my supersized gavel just yet. So we'll get to your requests, but you have to take a number and get in line like everyone else.

Okay, first, since I didn't get to play it for the apocalypse, let's get in Skeeter Davis' "End of the World" so we don't have to wait until the next one comes along.

For our newly re-elected Speaker, of course, we can only play "Master of the House" from "Les Mis" one more time ("Everybody raise a glass! Raise it up the Master's ____! Everybody raise a glass to the Master of the House!"). Followed, of course, by Leslie Gore's immortal "It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To".

In honor of the late great Patti Page, we'll be playing "Old Cape Cod", "Allegheny Moon" and "Tennessee Waltz" all night long (Uncle Redneck, may I have the first dance?).

And for our two newly sworn in trailblazing members of the House and Senate, Ms. Duckworth and Ms. Baldwin, what else but a little Debbie Reynolds?:

For SS who asked what an Aviation cocktail is:

The Aviation Cocktail is a gin-based cocktail whose special appeal comes from the addition of maraschino liqueur. Previously headed for the endangered species list, the Aviation Cocktail seems to be having a revival thanks to the Internet. The Aviation was once regarded as the prince of cocktails, but the scarcity of maraschino liqueur nearly sent the drink into tippler's oblivion. The name of this feisty Depression-era cocktail is supposedly linked to air travel of the time—a risky venture not for the faint of heart.

Only the most traditional or serious bars still make the Aviation. This is one drink that home-bartending aficionados are dabbling in.

Shake the Aviation hard enough that tiny flecks of ice float in the drink as soon as it is poured. Stay clear of the gooey syrup in maraschino cherry jars. It's no substitute for the liqueur.

This recipe was featured as part of both our New Year's Eve Speakeasy Party and our Best Picture Cocktails story.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • Maraschino cherry (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS
Shake the gin, maraschino liqueur, and lemon juice well with ice; then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry, if desired.

I am now back on US soil in the cold North and have way too many clothes on.

Bringing the pictures of the awesome Panama Canal and greetings from fellow travellers from all over the world.

They all so pleased that Obama got reelected, they bought me a couple of drinks from my new Brit friends from Birmingham and London as we discussed politics into the night.

I will be ready for the political threads by Monday. Still in vacation mode.

AlaskaGirl,

There are indeed different Aviations.

Your recipe is missing the creme de violette - an essential component! Some recipes call for a fruit brandy in place of the violette, but I think a brandy Aviation is inferior. And, the choice of maraschino liqueur is important - Luxardo has a spicy character that really switches the cocktail on.

'Tis an honor appreciated by aviators to have a fine cocktail named after our profession - an occupation still not for the faint of heart!

Nice avatar picture, superb Alaska sky.

@Exit0 - Not to worry, the DDI is wherever you want it to be. And the jukebox is bottomless, so "Ship of Fools" should be playing momentarily.

@Drive-by - Not to make you jealous or anything, but I actually saw Skeeter sing that in person at the Grand Ole Opry one time!

Wow you are right about that tune I can't stop, I made the mistake of checking out your link. Maybe this will help, and will go over better now that everybody has had few drinks, this is a re-post inspired by Amy's new avatar

Amy your avatar reminds me of a story. A guy is walking past an insane asylum which is surrounded by a big wooden fence, and hears this loud chanting from behind the fence, thirteen, thirteen! thirteen!, the people behind the fence are chanting in unison and it just gets louder and louder, thirteen!, thirteen! The guy is really curious about this and he notices a knot hole in the fence so be bends down and peeks through, and as soon as he does someone pokes him in the eye, as he is walking away holding his hand over his poked eye he hears the people behind the fence chanting loudly fourteen!, fourteen!, fourteen!

Strange how on Nov 2nd the unemployment rate was 7.7 and today when it was released the 7.8 number was announced as "it held the same".

And that spike up was even after all of the holidays seasonal hires?

Sad - as we enter year 5 of Obama - No jobs and an economy he can't fix

President Barack Obama's campaign has been fined $375,000 by the Federal Election Commission for reporting violations related to a set of donations received during the final days of the campaign.

The fines are among the largest ever levied on a presidential campaign by the FEC and stem from a series of missing filings for nearly 1,200 contributions totaling nearly $1.9 million.

Capital Hill LockUp, hmmm, there's quite a view House republicans, some GOP Senators (might be a democrat or two as well) who should be locked up with a copy of the Constitution, a book on Economics, a dictionary with "compromise" marked and hi-lighted, and a book showing what Reagan actually did while president.

Republicans say that an increase to the debt ceiling must be accompanied by equal or greater cuts in spending.
President Obama says that he has asked for an increase to cover money already spent by Congress and if Republicans decide not to pay the bills they have approved then the wrath of big business and the world will fall on them
President Obama will not negotiate over this.

Bring it to the new Sequester debate (3/01/13) , bring it to the Budget CR debate (3/27/13) but he will not allow the debt ceiling to be used to hold Americans hostage and put our credit rating in jeopardy again.

And since Dennis mentioned it, while the teacher is helping the Lock Up crowd, he/she can review what the Debt Ceiling actually is and just what happens when the US defaults on its debt--maybe the teach can borrow Netanyahu's picture of that cartoon bomb ignited.

dennis -- might be a good night to reminisce about the obama we used to know. we can only imagine where we would be today if he had not done a complete flop on his principles. what happened?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

      billiybob,

The debt ceiling, used by no other country, it is only a political tool/event. Party leaders allow some members to rail against it only after they know they have enough votes and the debt ceiling will be increased.

It you want true debt control then make Congress include an increase in our debt limit with each spending bill they consider. Before, not after they spend !!

Given Gotcha's past performances, we shouldn't be holding our breathes...

      Pat,

Gatcha should ask the Turtle where the GOP/TP leadership (?) will be meeting on Jan 21 to outline their strategy to continue their subversive tendencies against President Obama and therefore the entire country.

Here is my take on it, Biden is a good man but he is not calling the shots, he was the mouthpiece at McConnell's request and the only reason is that it is political poison and quite embarrassing for McConnell to now be perceived as compromising and negotiating with the president, he has to win re-election back in Kentucky. Obama did McConnell a political favor he does not deserve by letting Biden be seen as the negotiator, why do you think McConnell let Reid pass a stack of bills in the middle of the night without the usual BS from senate Republicans.

Forrest---I think you have it exactly right. I think the President is pretty secure and doesn't need to get credit for anything. In fact, I have the sense that he thinks the whole exercise is fairly silly.

Hey Feisty a new episode of "Darth ROOOOOOVE!" AKA. Karl Rove. The GOP/Teabegger "Master of Madness and Misinformation." Go todays Programming Notes and find out where "Darth Rove" is now. It is obvious that the Teabegger Congress is still acting Cognitively Disabled, Behaviorally Disturbed, and have no common sense at all. "Bonehead Boehner" is not only an individual with no leadership skills. He is just extremely 'uncompromising.' He is still leading a "House Of Hoodlum's" that have no legislative abilities. To ignore our fellow citizens that were crushed by Super Storm Sandy. Is not only inhumane but it is just UnAmerican. The Teabegger Congress is showing how insensitive they are to the views, and feelings of others. Little "Richie Rich Ryan" has no clue what it means to face the climatic destruction caused by Sandy. "Crazy Cantor" and his fellow Teabeggers have no problem saying no. Saying no to some of our citizens. Is really saying no to all of our citizens. The Teabegger Congress is ran like a "Mental Hospital." The "Mental Madness" of this Teabegger Congress is just a real sad joke. On their part! Progressive Power Think Tanks have not been shocked at all by the Cognitive Disablilties expressed by this Teabegger Mental Hospital. Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The Party of NO has got to go! Time to get the vote out for 2014.

Since Romney didn't really want to be President, he didn't have anything to get over when he lost--it was probably a relief to him! In all of that nonsense, I read somewhere that Tagg Romney harbors political ambitions and I thought---oh please, not again with this family of entitlement.

I am quite Honored, to have the opportunity of acquaintance with Gov. Schneider.

Your Governor, is trying very hard to save & expand the economy of your state.

Since Michigan, Apparently seems to be willing to embrace Capitalism. in a sane and responsible manner I have decided to create several exploratory committees for expansion within my organizations. In the Wolverine state, if the reports are favorable, Perhaps, I will be more willing to Expand some of my manufacturing entities there, as well as logistics, transportation & energy exploration This means jobs, jobs, JOBS... However, if you in Michigan desire to have equitable employment provided by my corporations, it will require that I be allowed to make some profit...$ "The puck is on your ice, don't blow the hat trick by body checking me into the wall...

Btw I don't really have to tell you this, but Illinois is loosing jobs and providers of employment. Same as California. I Myself, have TENTATIVELY decided to down size in the land of Lincoln, as a matter of fact over 1800 pink slips went out there before 12/31/2012 Sorry, just Business, nothing personal,,, mostly? I have business Buddies doing the same things.

Let me ask you Illinoisans one question, OK? How many of you are thinking of pulling up stakes, and relocating elsewhere for greater employment opportunity and more favorable, tax consequences? Let me just say, Give some consideration to your families fiscal future.

Humbly, ask for guidance, Pray and choose wisely...

Strange how on Nov 2nd the unemployment rate was 7.7 and Friday when it was released the 7.8 number was announced as "it held the same".

And that spike up was even after all of the holidays seasonal hires?

Marcus - the most divisive and corrupt group in politics is the Republican party. You know, the party that said "to hell with the country, we'll block everything this President proposes in order to make him a one-term President." You know, the group that has pledged their loyalty to Grover Norquist above that of the US citizens. THAT is the MOST corrupt ever in this country!

Funny how faint those war cries have become. Yes we're going into year 5 of Obama - 5th year

The corruption brought through his administration - will be documented in history as one of the most corrupt groups of all time.

Hillary, as an example - is in a very bad spot right now - and has a big decision to make when she goes under oath.

The fines levied are the largest ever for a presidential campaign - further proof

Liberal Democrats always wind up going rogue in the White House it seems - Barack Obama - no exception

"Yes we're going into year 5 of Obama - 5th year"

And amazingly enough, we're still not even a bit closer to Armageddon, socialism, Greece, $5.00 a gallon gas, 20% unemployment, FEMA re-education camps, or having to salute the Kenyan flag than we were at the start of Year One. Maybe by the end of Year Eight, you guys will finally take the blinders off and realize just how good things have really been under President Obama......but then again, probably not. You've made up your mind - or had it made up for you - and nothing's going to change that. Well, that's your problem, not mine.

"Liberal Democrats always wind up going rogue in the White House it seems"

Oh, yeah.....Richard Nixon and George W. Bush - the most liberal Democratic presidents ever! Besides, didn't somebody a while back claim that "going rogue" in Washington was a great thing to do? Who the heck was that again? Sarah.....Sarah somebody.....wait a minute, I've almost got it......oh, wait, was it Sarah Palin??? You betcha!

Yellowbama should not be given leeway on anything . He is a habitual liar . He should be impeached for derelection of duty for the murder of 4 americans in Bengahzi . He and his staff members were watching the atack in real time in the situation room . He didn"t do anything because he had to fly to Vegas for a fund raiser . I"m 71 with an 8th grade education , never in my life have I seen anything like him except Jimmy Carter . When the Lybian conflict started , he let Hillary handle that while he played golf . It burns me up when he compares himself to other presidents , most of them were men that"s something I havent seen in him . G.W. Bush warned Bin Laden 4mos he was going to bomb him . If someone tells me they are going to bomb me , you can color me gone . Hillary , rice , Petraeus all should have perjury charges filed against them .
