Aides to the newly retired Rep. Barney Frank say the congressman definitely wants to be appointed by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick as a caretaker senator. The opening would occur when John Kerry moves to the State Department pending his confirmation as the next secretary.
Frank, who is 72, has said he looked forward to life after Congress and "not having to answer the phone." But just one day after his 16 years in Congress ended, Frank has changed his mind citing the Senate's expected focus on fiscal issues, where Frank could use his expertise as the former top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee. A caretaker appointment would be short-term, just for a few months until the special election is set.
Fmr. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., proves there's no rest for the recently retired. When asked by Joe Scarborough if he would consider being future Sen. Barney Frank, Frank responded by saying he's spoken with the Mass. Governor Deval Patrick about being appointed temporarily.
Frank told "Morning Joe," "A few weeks ago said, I said I wasn't interested. It was kind of like, you're about to graduate and they said, you've got to go to summer school. But that [fiscal cliff] deal now means that February, March, and April are going to be among the most important months in American financial history."
When Sen. Kennedy died in 2009, the governor chose long time Kennedy aide and former Democratic National Committee chair Paul Kirk to serve in the interim before Scott Brown won the seat. Aides say they cannot comment this morning on whether Frank has heard back from Gov. Patrick.

"could use his expertise as the former top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee"
You've got to be kidding me? This idiot oversaw the ruin of the housing market in this country and the largest loss of wealth by the American middle class in the history of this country. This guy should be in jail along with his pal Chris Dodd. Barney, if you really care about this country you will just go away like Dodd has. Take your lifetime pension, your healthcare and just leave. Please!
Just go away barney, and take your funky toys with you. Isn't the housing crisis enough damage ? Go away !
He didn't ask to push in your stool, he asked to fill a vacant congressional seat.
Maybe he can get a job at Keebler as the fudgepacker!
If he did it would have to be a moonlight position, and even then the packees would have to have a booked appointment.
Congress has shown itself to be self serving and not working in the best interest of the people. We have more and more people calling for term limits, vote them all out, get representatives in there that are close to the people. WHY would anyone want to put in a life time pol. back in office? This would be the height of insanity.
I have to believe that MA has some great minds that would better fill this spot.
The American voters are nothing more than a herd of brainwashed sheep being led to their slaughter.
Barney the purple dino is smarter and would do better than Barnie Frank.
Barney Fife and his 1 bullet would do better than Barney Frank
I think he wants his own reality show. "Morning Blow" so he can promote his new book, "Tails from the backside." Hairy Reid will be his co-host kinda like Johnny and Ed so when the goo gobbler has to take a break to clear his throat Hairy can entertain the audience with his finger pointing tricks.
Barney heard this new crop of Senate page's are really hot.
Welcome back Barney...........if you do become a Senator you'll join the other deadbeats in the Senate that are having a gay old time screwing America.
Oh man, why couldn't he just stay happy packing fudge with his 18 year old boy toys. That dudes a complete wreck for the economy.
Massachusetts, hasn't this guy done enough damage to the country. It was him and his cronies on the finance and banking committees that allowed Wall Street to destroy the economy for decades to come.
Cant BARNEY take a hint....Go Away ! Stay out of sight at a distance ! Such an aweful looking fella !
The problem I have with Barney is the fact that he talks out of both sides of his mouth. He voted to strip and kill the banking bill that lead to the over-reach of banks into all kinds of funds they have no business being in. He then wrote more legislation that stripped the SEC then cried against it. He also was the author of legislation that allowed banks and credit cards companies to increase fee's on the consumer. He had the audacity to call it a "consumers protection" law. Look at your credit card statements. He also wrote legislation that every home that is sold in the U.S. special interests get 425 bucks off of each sale. He also helped write the legislation that increases everyone taxes inside of Obamacare. He is as much for the middle class and fair tax practices as the President of France.
In your face cold hard facts cannot be denied unless of course you happen to be a lib.
Massachusetts should be ashamed for putting this 'fat fag' in congress to, basically, screw up the country...go ahead Mass. appointing him to something else to screw up...your state deserves this idiot!
The housing bubble, severe economic downturn, and subsequent bail-out of the "Too big to fail" financial sector failures, were caused by the repeal of Glass-Steagall (AKA Banking Act of 1933) during the Clinton Administration, Glass-Steagall prohibited bank sales of Securities; and created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which insures bank deposits with a pool of money appropriated from banks.
Many people in Congress have their fingerprints on this one. Capitalistic GREED was the motivating factor. It made lots of money for a few people, but it almost ruined our country, and had great effect on the global financial markets.
Dodd-Frank attempted to correct the problem.
Chalk up another one for the global elitists (Joos) and their politician puppets?
They are ALL on a secret mission to see which one can become America's first dictator. It takes a lifetime of commitment, you know?
Someone explain, what can Barney add to the Senate other than UGLY >> (unless it's monkey business with toys, and stuff...) ? America is in a FINANCIAL and MORAL crisis....and lookie' who wants back in....GOOD GRIEF.
Frank would be an excellent Senator and he has my support. Cant believe we have to deal with Scott Brown again.
You deserve all of the hardships and heart aches you get and then some.
Oh good grief.
I lost a lot of money when he screwed around with freddie and fannie. As far as I'm concerned, he needs to take all the money he stole by helping to manipulate the stock market, and get out of the working man's sight. He has done enough damage. NOW JUST GO AWAY------ WE DON'T NEED YOUR KIND TO HELP US.
It's probably an opportunity for Frank to enhance his retirement at the expense of the taxpayers.
I see feisty is first with her nonsense, as usual.
Fiesty Red Head, aka paid DNC troll.
Really? This bum back in Congress? The man who single handedly caused the mortgage mess. This is the guy who twisted arms at FNMA and changed the underwriting guidelines and destroyed the mortgage market. Nobody will admit it, nobody will talk about it, but that's what happened.
Frank insisted that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were in good shape. Five years ago, for example, when the Bush administration proposed much tighter regulation of the two companies, Frank was adamant that "these two entities, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not facing any kind of financial crisis." When the White House warned of "systemic risk for our financial system" unless the mortgage giants were curbed, Frank complained that the administration was more concerned about financial safety than about housing.
no, no, no, no. He is a big cause of the the problems we are having....LEAVE....
insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results....
This Man needs to retire good luck with your life.....all the best......
Shummer was bad. Barney would be worse. Remember, he was the one who wanted to 'roll the dice' on housing one more time.
