Aides to the newly retired Rep. Barney Frank say the congressman definitely wants to be appointed by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick as a caretaker senator. The opening would occur when John Kerry moves to the State Department pending his confirmation as the next secretary.
Frank, who is 72, has said he looked forward to life after Congress and "not having to answer the phone." But just one day after his 16 years in Congress ended, Frank has changed his mind citing the Senate's expected focus on fiscal issues, where Frank could use his expertise as the former top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee. A caretaker appointment would be short-term, just for a few months until the special election is set.
Fmr. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., proves there's no rest for the recently retired. When asked by Joe Scarborough if he would consider being future Sen. Barney Frank, Frank responded by saying he's spoken with the Mass. Governor Deval Patrick about being appointed temporarily.
Frank told "Morning Joe," "A few weeks ago said, I said I wasn't interested. It was kind of like, you're about to graduate and they said, you've got to go to summer school. But that [fiscal cliff] deal now means that February, March, and April are going to be among the most important months in American financial history."
When Sen. Kennedy died in 2009, the governor chose long time Kennedy aide and former Democratic National Committee chair Paul Kirk to serve in the interim before Scott Brown won the seat. Aides say they cannot comment this morning on whether Frank has heard back from Gov. Patrick.

The LAST thing we need is another idiot spending more money we DON'T have. ALL of these people (BOTH PARTY'S) need to be VOTED OUT AND REPLACED with real folks that understand you can't spend your way out of DEBT.
please, not another career politician coming back to congress! go away barney!
Gee, just when Bawney Fwank was out the front door, he sneaks in the back door..... Is he still banging the V.P. of Fwannie or Fweddie???? Or Feastly??? God are we on the slippery slope!
With his expirence he would make a great "Senate Head", or would that be "Head of Senate"? Need to make sure he doesnt "blow" this deal though. I don't care for him not being elected to the position also, no need for him to go through the "back door".
BAH DUM DUM or would that be a rim shot now.
Barney has had a change of heart. What happened to his aspirations of becoming an "assistant wiener vendor" at the Cannes transgender festival this spring...
Our nation does NOT deserve a fudge packing homo in the Senate....Barney...please retire to some San Francisco bath house and be an oil boy for the patrons.....
How about Chief Company Queer?
How about Gay Czar
Queer Czar
Rod Czar
Butt Czar
Blow Czar
Barney the Bigot Frank-enstein, needs to be chased by torch-wielding citizens to a windmill and...
Oh good... Senator Frank - just what we need right now.
I think he'd make a GREAT Democratic senator.
Frank, Franken, two peas in a pod, they even look similar....
How about Frank and Wiener?
Alan NJ and David Walker,
Your knowledge on the topic of Glass-Steagall and SEC is compelling, but I suspect these details are all but lost on the simple-minded, ("Parable of the blue cup") simpletons, who can't even spell "context", let alone understand the concept.
The climate for the downturn was created by the owning classes, who set up a series of circumstances, such as NAFTA, Repeal of Glass-Steagall, Gutting the SEC, and a host of other legislative blunders, including intense lobbying efforts, that allowed the system to be corrupted. It is corrupted.
With globalized corporate conglomeration, China and Russia and other large economies in the world, will create even worse economic situations for us in the future.
I think they do it, from time to time, just to make sure we understand who is really in charge. Think of what you know about human beings, and then give them unregulated access to assault rifles and drum clips.
Yeah, that's a recipe for "striving for human potential".
Actually, the economic crisis we are currently experience would not have been avoided if Glass-Steagall were still in effect. NAFTA was a major reason for the economic highs of the Clinton years. Onerous regulations by non-elected, unchecked federal agencies like the EPA are the main reason our jobs are going overseas.
EXACTLY, Brian and sjacobs123! The G/S could have been reinstated in 2 ways:
1) executive order by a president
2) a vote by Congress
NONE of them have even mentioned Glass-Steagall! The corruption is unbelievable.
Great...just what this country needs...more Barney Frank - NOT!
Go home and ride your boy friend Barney.
And here I was thinking he retired, finally rid of that disgusting homo. Now he's back apparently, and the people of the state of Massachusetts might actually elect him.
Now go back and read the story. I know you can do it. Focus!
Disgusting! When is our effete government going to get some new fresh blood.
Are you a vampire?
Please Barn. You have done enough damage to our country already. DO NOT ELECT THIS GUY FOR ANYTHING.
another useless piece of garbage mass.liberals will put back into office.
Barry Frank is more responsible for the housing "bubble" than anyone else.
Not only did he have an insider "relationship" with one on Fannie Mays executives (his husband) but he is the individual that forced banks to begin using sub prime loans for folks that would never had qualified for "regular" mortgages, i.e. minimum wage earners being given 250,000 loans; Including forcing banks to lend to ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS or undocumented immigrants if you prefer(people who could not even prove their own identity).
He was involved in one of the biggest scams on the US tax payers in history.
Barney Frank did not run for reelection because he was facing senate investigation.
Now he wants a promotion.
AMERICA wake up there is no difference between democrats or republicans.
They are both out to steal as much from us as possible.
and OUR kids will be paying for this robbery for decades
Great Idea lets reward the clown that helped cause the housing crash. America is doomed.
That was assured on November 6!
Barney....you draft-dodging pervert!!...Please stay retired and you and your shower buddy can walk hand in hand down the Hershey Highway...You were a disgrace as a Congressman. We don't need a fudge packer in the Senate!!...You are a CREEP.....
Why not! He's a co-author of the bill largely responsible for the sluggish economic recover. How appropiate that he should also be insturmental in the further destruction of our economy! Obama can carry on with his "Fundamental Destruction " of this country. Put us out of our misery quickly and get on with the transformation to a true Socialism! Welcome to the Proletariat Comrade!
If all the banking regulations of Dodd-Frank had been adopted, we might not have had a recession to start with. Only about 1/3 of their recommendations were adopted and banks without tight regulations were able to do as they pleased. I'm sure Senator Warren on the banking committee with find other loopholes but to think this DO NOTHING congress would vote on changes is doubtful. Banks are the Republicans big lobbyists and one of their favorites is Scott Brown and Wall Streets darling.
oops....double post
There's life in the old dog yet.
Senators have more interns than Congressmen
