Geithner to leave Treasury post by this month?

Earlier today, Bloomberg News reported that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is planning to leave the Obama administration by the end of January, even if the White House and Congress haven't yet reached a deal on the debt ceiling by then.

In response to a question from First Read about the article, a Treasury spokesperson says that Geithner has previously stated he plans to stay "until around the inauguration" -- so late January.

"Secretary Geithner has previously stated that he plans to be at Treasury until around the inauguration," the spokesperson said. "We do not plan to make any further announcements about the timing of the Secretary's departure until after his successor is named."

Geithner, 51, is the only remaining original member of Obama's cabinet and has been an instrumental figure in the administration's handling of the bank bailouts and economic recovery efforts in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

Prior to joining the Obama administration, Geithner served as the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He first joined the Treasury department in 1988 and served in various roles under three separate administrations.

One possible contender for the job after Geithner's departure is current White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew, who previously served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget.

NBC's Carrie Dann contributed to this report.

Adios Turd. Off to make millions in the private sector. Now, can we get rid of the AG? The Director of the FBI? Let's clean the dried dookie from the yard!

Maybe he can go back to the NY Fed and orchestrate another meltdown of the economy by ignoring derivatives like he did before

So tell me Seeking....how many unsuspecting borrowers did you fleece with 5 year ARMS during the Bush years???? But I guess that's okay because it benefited you eh?

Typical liberal justification for robbing people......

Obama will likely bring back Larry Sommers or Hank Paulson. You know, they are the guys who wouldn't allow Brooksley Borne to really put her foot down and stop it, when her bosses along with Geitner & Clinton allowed investors and banks to sell those toxic mortgages that blew up our economy. Got to love how these guys just keep on looking to screw all of America with their hors$hit government investment schemes

When you return to the private sector, Mr. Geithner, please remember to pay your taxes this time.

This is incorrect information. At least as far as I know. It would be nice if the other 11 original cabinet members would resign as well but this statement just simply is not true.

Geithner is no one's fool. He knows that the U.S. economy is teetering on the edge of collapse, and he also knows that the Fed has come to the end of its playbook. It's time to make tracks before the house of cards collapses.

Each and everyone in that position would be doing the same thing as Geithner is doing, bailout time. This economic mess took over 30 yrs to make, and no matter what, or how much money is thrown at the problem, it's not going to fix anything. Blame Bush or Obama, but neither one really had a hand in causing this mess, and yes, the bubble broke under Bush.

But no President, be it Obama or McCain, or Obama or Mitt, would/will fix it in 8 yrs. You low informed people who think so are really stupid. It will take at least another 8 to 10 yrs for the economy to somewhat get back the way it used to be. And it will never ever really be like it was.

But the pukebags don't want to help, they keep saying NO to everything. Maybe all those NO people should be rounded up and sent to Africa, most countries there have no real govt. That would make them all happy, and they could have their own country run by themselves. Then watch how fast they try to get visa's to come back here. Problem is, they would have to go to Mexico first, then sneak across the border to get back.

Sally..........why don't you get real instead spreading your tripe on the internet.........In 2006, every democrat including Senator Obama said no (voted against) raising the debt limit. Even Obama said this:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

And then you have the audacity to call the republicans the party of no. Get smart for once and realize it is about PLAYING POLITICS TO THE BASE. Nothing more, nothing less and

YOU TOOK THE DEMOCRATS TALKING POINTS HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER.

GCCal, no way slick. After reading some of your posts on other items, especially the new Sec of Defense, you got the hook, line, and sinker. You are part of the low informed who wants to deny everything except what the pukebags want.

And yes, as an Independent, I do have the audacity to tell both parties what I think. Don't like it, TS. And no, I am not political correct, I also have a CC license. But you are having the audacity to say that this mess didn't start with Reagan?

I told the truth, not your Fox Noise excretment. That is why you can't handle it, it's because the pukebag party can't stand FACTS. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

                      Read closely, Sally

                      1) I never ever listen to Fox News, Limbaugh or any talking point political commentator.

                      2) What I said about the Dems and Obama are fact if you care to take the time from your busy independent life to find out.

Truth apparently is something you prefer to make up and spout off as if it is fact.

By the way, what is with the "no way slick" and TS.....make you feel like a real person to say something that you think insults other people.

PC and CC people both make me sick. Don't like it then TS................and I have guns.

Hey, maybe they can find a pukebag that knows how to handle money??? Guess not, that would be asking for too much. Hopefully, it's someone who knows what the hell they are doing for a change.

Who, in their right mind, would care if there is one less bean counter in the federal government...its not like there's a shortage...it's not likely that the administration is looking for an honest bean counter...all Obama's gotta do is get about 50 people that want the job to show up...close his eyes and point...there...problem solved...

You might be on to something there with an odor replacing Little Timmy. In fact, in could replace every House member also.
