Subscribe to RSSThe House will vote tomorrow to elect a Speaker of the House. While it is likely that Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) will be reelected, if 17 conservatives decide to vote against Boehner, it could lead to the first second ballot for speaker since 1923.
There are no indications Boehner will not be re-elected Speaker. While there will likely be members who vote against him, there is no real candidate that could garner enough votes to take Boehner down.

The 113th Congress will convene for the first time at noon Thursday, after which the House will vote to elect a speaker.
Members will be called by name alphabetically and asked for their vote. This vote is different than typical votes, which are done electronically during a set period of time.
The next speaker needs a majority of all votes cast to be elected. They do not need a majority of the full membership of the House. The 113th has 434 members because Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s seat will be vacant.
If all members were to vote, Boehner would need 218 votes, unless there are members who are absent for the vote or members who vote "present" (for no one).
Since 1913, the year the House reached the size of 435 members, there has only been one time that no candidate received the majority of the votes cast for speaker.
That was in 1923, when nine ballots over three days were needed before Rep. Frederick Gillett (R-MA) was reelected to the position for a third term.
The speaker does not have to be a member of Congress, but in the history of the House of Representatives there has never been a speaker who was not a member.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) nominated Newt Gingrich this year during the Republican Conference meeting, but that nomination was not seconded, and Speaker Boehner was nominated by a voice vote (no objectors) to be the Republicans' nominee yet again. Democrats chose to have Nancy Pelosi as their nominee for Speaker of the House.
Between 1943 and 1995, only the nominated Republican and Democrat received votes, but before that, it was customary for members of other groups within parties would garner votes as well.
Since 1913, the speaker has been elected without a majority of the whole House, but with the majority of those voting, only four times:
-- 1917 (65th Congress) -- "Champ" Clark (D-MO) was elected with 217 votes;
-- 1923 (68th Congress) -- Frederick Gillett (R-MA) was elected with 215 votes;
-- 1943 (78th Congress) -- Sam Rayburn (D-TX) was elected with 217 votes;
-- 1997 (105th Congress) -- Newt Gingrich (R-GA) was elected with 216 votes

Well, of course Boehner will get re-elected. It's obvious that he's done such a stellar job so far. Congress's approval rating is below 10%. (eyeroll)

If Boehner is re-elected,it will just prove to the people of our great country that most politicians in office do not care about what the the citizens want or think.
It only proves,that they are in office for their own financial gains,and protection.
There are three parties in congress. Republican, T Party, and Democrats, so who could lead any two. Boner can't control the T for terrorist party. They run to get elected, but they really hate our government. How do they intend on controlling a government that they are trying to ruin. Stupid, extremist. They should pack up and go to the mid east where they can fit in.
Isn't Boehner a drunk? Still, he's better than Newt Gingrich (ick). I liked Nancy Pelosi OK, but she needed to think for herself and her constituents more and be less of a cheerleader for everything the President handed down. And I LOVE President Obama, don't get me wrong (go ahead and call me names, conservatives), I just think a Speaker of the House should show some more independence than I saw from her.

Since we are in such a financial rut and supposedly owe China a boat load of money,then why in the hell are we still handing out money on foreign aid?
If i was in a financial rut ( i am) i'm sure as hell are not going to give my neighbor the money i need so he can fix his car or leaky roof.
Crazy rationale in what you say. The deficit was originally created by TWO UNPAID WARS and Drug programs created to give more money to drug companies. Why don't you do your homework before commenting.

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 21, 2012 - Since no conservative member of the House has come forward to challenge John Boehner as Speaker, I will since its not required to be a member of the House to be elected Speaker.
John Boehner has failed the Republican Party and the american people. Boehner's lack of the most basic knowledge of being a congressman is staggering. Boehner doesn't know the difference between the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Boehner lied to the GOP National Convention.
Boehner was caught during a voice vote reading from a teleprompter stating that the ayes have it before the vote was even taken. At the very least a floor vote should have been called by Boehner. Boehner and his ilk were there to subvert the will of the members of our party. Boehner is not a fiscal conservative by any means.
John Boehner has voted in favor of increasing the debt ceiling multiple times. Boehner has no intention to ever balance the budget of the United States of America.
I ask every American to contact your Representative and ask them to vote for David Blair Ryon of Columbus, Ohio 3rd Congressional District as the next Speaker of the House of the 113th United States Congress. Maybe its time the House elected a non-member and non-insider as Speaker in order to put the people above the politics. representatives/find/

If rumor is correct and John Boehner is going to resign as Speaker, boy is the GOP House going down the tubes. There is no way that Eric Cantor is capable to take over. He does not have what it takes. Everything he has to deal with is a joke to him. Plus the GOP needs real leadership with a leader who lives in the real world instead of lala land, is willing to listen to their real constituents and not their financial donors and understands that compromise is the only way that we can grow our economy and reduce our deficit.

Maybe the GOP will try and put their best foot forward this time instead of their best "used car salesman". These last few days have demonstrated Boner's real problem. Walking out in the hallway after another session with a big grin on his face like "I've got them by the short hairs now." Just once I'd like to see him do something for the Americans in this country rather than those filthy-rich folks who will pack up and move to Bimini when the going gets tough in the US. We've brinked on a depression several times now. The GOP wants spending cuts? How about the defense budget? I'm a retired Marine with two sons who are Marines. What a grand waste of money the last dozen years have been! And George W put it all on the credit card, along with his prescription drug failure, and those very generous tax cuts for everyone. All charged to our children and grand children. Obama inherited it along with W's hemorrhaging economy and unemployment. Boner is the No man for the GOP. Whatever the Democrats want, the answer is no. I'm waiting for the next election. We're going to clean house. There isn't one trustworthy candidate in the entire GOP. Hilarious!
Boehner had the guts to stand up against the Obama regime. But the way this country is going it would not suprise me if we give up the house to the socialist movement.
If John Bonehead gets re-elected Speaker of the House it will show just how pathetic the House Republicans are as a party.
Well, let's see now: Boehner = 169 votes; Cantor = 49 votes and Nancy Pelosi = 216 votes. Who do you think wins in this scenario? There is absolutely nothing that says the Speaker of the House has to come from the Republicans, especially when they can't get their act together. At least the Democrats know which direction the sun comes up and the sun sets.
It will be interesting to see who votes for Cantor. The Tea Party must be so proud of itself these days.
