House chaplain makes appeal for compromise

House Speaker John Boehner, when asked about the way forward after Plan B went down to defeat, said, "God only knows."

Today, in the opening prayer at the start of the House session at noon ET, the House chaplain made a rare appeal to the heavens for compromise.

"May an imperfect compromise, when viewed from the perspective of our differences, not be undermined by a desire for political victory," House Chaplain Patrick Conroy implored.

Here's what he said in full:

"Let us pray. Eternal God, we give you thanks for giving us another day, a new year. The political struggles of the past year have revealed the divisions that exist in our nation. There are many American citizens who are angry, frustrated, and anxious for the future. This day is a day of history. Send your spirit upon the members of the people’s house. May an imperfect compromise when viewed from the perspective of our differences not be undermined by a desire for political victory. This is difficult for all. Give each member the grace and courage to forge a constructive solution for the greater good of the nation and all Americans. Help us to trust that no matter what, you will not abandon us. May all that is done this day be for your greater honor and glory. Amen."

After Plan B, Boehner pointed at the president and the Senate to get something done. "Now, it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff," he said then in a statement.

Now, it is up to Boehner whether he puts the bill, which passed the Senate 89-8, on the floor for a vote.

Looks like the GOP/Tea Party of Fear and Hate are SOL.

God is out of town. He/she is still in Iraq and Afghanistan dealing with Dubyas War crimes.

Trying to shove off responsibility for your adolescent and irresponsible failure to handle the business of the country on God is a lame dodge. The reason our whole country is constantly balanced on a fiscal cliff is directly the fault of every elected official drawing a paycheck. If those elected had the ability to differentiate between right and wrong they would efficiently get rid of all the pork and stop all cash flow over seas while the USA disintegrates. They would secure our borders and protect our citizens 1st, rather than worrying about being politically correct for the media interviews. Our soldiers wouldn't be fighting and dying for false reasons in foreign lands. If ever their was a group of individuals who had better hope there is no God it is our lawmakers.

Wow has it gotten that bad that we have to pray? Besides, I thought we got rid of God in Government... who needs him anyway, looks like the government is fine without him.

No ones personal deity is a member of congress. Perhaps the chaplain would do better appealing to the obstructionists?

So what does his mythical supreme being have to say? Should it be $400k rather than $250k?

No wonder things are so screwed up. Half the people still believe in Santa and the tooth fairy.

The chaplin's words are probably the most cogent and intelligent words of this whole ordeal.

This shouldn't be about winning. It's about moving forward.

Because of this, the Koch brothers will now pay 5% more in capital gains taxes.

Because of this, when the Koch brothers die, the inheritors of their estate will pay 5% more in inheritance taxes.

Some on the left are hoping to still go over the cliff, even though doing so will hurt over 2 million unemployed right away. Now they have a lifeline for another year, outside of all of this fiscal cliff garbage.

This is a good deal. Take it.

There are more "R" on welfare than "D"

Blue states support red state's welfare.

Wrong. I would actually like to see the House vote this bill down. It would spotlight how dumb the GOP in the House are because the deal we would get next week with the new Congress and even more political pressure would probably be even a better one for the Dems.

You pathetic GOP SHEEP. You deliberately cause problems, they pray to some imaginary Deity to fix them.

When you solve your own problem I guess you'll say "Wow, God sure came through for us." As if some God would be concerned about our fiscal crisis caused by the same people that use God as a shield for all they do.

Even God couldn't help the GOP controlled US House. They could not fight their way out of a wet paper bag. God is said to help those who help themselves. The slackers in the House won't even do their jobs and don't give a damn about the average American. They only care about their own political skins and people this selfish won't even be on God's radar.

Sure, talking to imaginary beings is the way to influence vital legislation! Nothing fails like prayer. There is no constitutional requirement that every session of Congress be opened with a prayer. In fact, it strikes me as utterly ridiculous.

Ok. A little quick research reveals that the House chaplain makes $172,500. The Senate chaplain makes $151,000. When we start talking about budget cuts, we can lead off with those two. What a f'ing waste of taxpayer dollars!
