House chaplain makes appeal for compromise

House Speaker John Boehner, when asked about the way forward after Plan B went down to defeat, said, "God only knows."

Today, in the opening prayer at the start of the House session at noon ET, the House chaplain made a rare appeal to the heavens for compromise.

"May an imperfect compromise, when viewed from the perspective of our differences, not be undermined by a desire for political victory," House Chaplain Patrick Conroy implored.

Here's what he said in full:

"Let us pray. Eternal God, we give you thanks for giving us another day, a new year. The political struggles of the past year have revealed the divisions that exist in our nation. There are many American citizens who are angry, frustrated, and anxious for the future. This day is a day of history. Send your spirit upon the members of the people’s house. May an imperfect compromise when viewed from the perspective of our differences not be undermined by a desire for political victory. This is difficult for all. Give each member the grace and courage to forge a constructive solution for the greater good of the nation and all Americans. Help us to trust that no matter what, you will not abandon us. May all that is done this day be for your greater honor and glory. Amen."

After Plan B, Boehner pointed at the president and the Senate to get something done. "Now, it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff," he said then in a statement.

Now, it is up to Boehner whether he puts the bill, which passed the Senate 89-8, on the floor for a vote.

GOD can't save congress now! GOD only help those who help themselves.

It's hard to imagine that a few GOP House members can hold the entire country and the entire world economy hostage like this. But these political animals are forever afraid. Imagine these House Republicans' fear to lose their 2014 primary fight against fierce new challengers put up by the unforgiving rich donors angry with tax increases. They want to save their own arse.

Speaker Boehner has lost control of his GOP caucus. But it's time to hone his skills...no pain no gain. Boehner should use all weapons in his arsenal, including crying and changing facial color.

God helps those who ask for help. "Ask, and you shall received" So, Boehner and your followers, the ball is in your court. Are you going to fan the political prestige or are you going to work for the very same people that put you in the seat? If you chose the political prestige, say good bye in 2014!!

How dare the Reichwing, Party of No, anti-Constitutionally inject religion into politics.

The separation of Church and State needs to be preserved in order to enter the 21st century, Modern World.

If the forefathers thought "god" not to have any importance in proceedings, they would have not required that every session of Congress open with prayer from clergy.

A lot of people point out that there were no formal pray before each session of the constitutional convention, but in the meeting minutes, it shows that the reason there was no formal prayer was that they had no money to pay clergy to come and do so. It is considered a breach of etiquette to not pay the clergy to perform the service. It also would have been a breach of etiquette for a member of the convention to offer prayer even though several of the members were clergy. What did occur was that many did convene before each session to have prayer.

Just because there are those who don't want to see it or admit to any positive effect of prayer doesn't mean it doesn't happen or doesn't help.

Uncivilized... Taxing the top dollar earners... 98%... Dems... Reps... Regardless of how you view it... the lines are VERY grey and hazy as they apply to ALL that reside in Washington. Every situation is always distorted while keeping the fine details often outlined in microscopic print.

There "Christians" who are Democrats and "Christians" who are Republicans and libertarians.

The reason you have these differences is because people have a tendency to do what they decide God wants instead of doing what God wants.

On the religious right side, they don't want abortion or same sex marriages legislated as the law. This is because they know that God shows that this is wrong according to various scriptures (some not correctly translate, some not really understood). The problem is that while he is against these things, he wants us to choose Him and His way by our free will. For those that understand that these things are wrong, they need to explain that these things are wrong, or they are then considered in a sense guilty for not doing something about them.

On the Left side. They understand that people should not be left to starve or die uneccessarily. And while many are generous and sacrificial to help, more say let's have the government do it for us. I cannot find anywhere Jesus ever said to do this. It was a personal matter and to be done privately as God showed you to do and using the resources you have.

When it is given to politicians, they have a tendency to tout how much they help those who are disadvantaged by government taking from others and giving the resources to others. The politicians gain notoriety and wealth for doing this. Doing these things in the eyes of men is more about them getting something they want than doing what God wants.

In contrast, when Jesus fed the 5,000 he only asked for what people were willing to offer to help with and multiplied it so many were more than filled. He never levied a tax on people to do so. Although he had warnings to rich people for them trusting in their riches, he never advocated taking from them to give to the poor. He did say that they do give much more than the poor, but they do so out of their wealth whereas when those that are poor give, they give to the degree it hurts.

I also don't see "Christians" on the left confirm that god thinks abortion and homosexuality are wrong, they simply say, it is their "choice". What kind of witness are they of God? Laodicea?

Chaplains exist first and foremost for the military -- of which is understandable, since they have to put their lives in harm's way, and they appreciate the spiritual and emotional support that the Chaplains provide.

But why do they exist at all in the Congress?

Hello folks, if God has anything to do with this mess I'm not impressed. This isn't the work of an all mighty and powerful being. It is the type of work you would expect from a temp with a bad attitude. Come on, in any decently run universe he would have been thrown out on his all powerful arse. Why would congress want assistance from a religion where their God always needs more and more money to spread his good deeds? And why does all his good deeds go to bailing out the banksters?

One thing I can tell is that God has one thing in common with the tooth fairy and the fiscal cliff, that's right they all aren't real. The fiscal cliff is a fabricated deadline to agitate the peasants to distract them and get them to accept austerity while their lords bailout the real culprits of this dilemma, the banksters.

They continue to allow the banksters to gamble in the 1.4 quadrillion illusory derivatives casino. They allow the banksters to manipulate the 800 trillion Libor Rate with no penalties, not one bankster has gone to jail over this overt theft to the global citizen.

HSBC admitted to laundering billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels (among others) and violating a host of important banking laws (from the Bank Secrecy Act to the Trading With the Enemy Act), Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer and his Justice Department elected not to pursue criminal prosecutions of the bank, opting instead for a financial settlement of $1.9 billion which as one analyst noted is about five weeks of income for the bank, a drop in the bucket compared to the hidden profits they made laundering the money over the years.

The New York Times put it this way:

“Federal and state authorities have chosen not to indict HSBC, the London-based bank, on charges of vast and prolonged money laundering, for fear that criminal prosecution would topple the bank and, in the process, endanger the financial system.”

And the banksters get away with it over and over and over again and who pays for their criminal acts? That's right, us smucks, they even brag about it. You know the 1% adage, privatize profits and socialize losses. And yet they have the sheeple fighting over which type of austerity they "need" to endure to bail these criminals out again! Apparently the tens of trillions they have squandered at our expense isn't enough. Now the peasants will have one austerity measure after another imposed on them and the sheeple will willfully fight over which one will be imposed on them based on party affiliation dogma.

I am seriously wondering why the people lack so little courage to say no, ain’t going to do this anymore. Where is defiance? Where is just one tiny spark of self-worth from somebody that screams NO! We should not have to suffer any cuts to anything. We should not have to pay higher taxes let alone any taxes, we should not just watch our military budget explode for more evil to be created while millions of people are starving, our infrastructure is collapsing, and our schools are in ruins. The banksters are doing all of this in plain sight, rubbing our noses in it yet there is no outrage or blow back! Just sheeple like silence. It is a total disgrace. We can’t expect the same people who make waves and fight back to keep doing it. Everybody must do their part in fighting for our freedom and change. The old warriors are tired of the battle they have been waging forever, it is time for fresh blood, time for the younger folks to step in.

Folks, if we don't stand up to these criminals now then when? Their use of problem - reaction - solution to manipulate the masses should be an obvious ploy by now.

Trust

This isn't the work of an all mighty and powerful being.

You are right! It is man's doing. According to the Christian and Jewish faiths, man chose to go his own way. After God gave us dominion over all the earth we did exactly what he told us not to do. After disobeying God, he hid. It was God that sought man. It is still the same story today. We decided to do things our way without the full understanding of what he wants or how he knows what works best.

Both sides insist that their way is God's way when only small parts may be what he wants.

Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord.

The outrage is that in the midst of this negotuation on the "fiscal cliff" the president just lifted a spending freeze on federal employees. This includes the VP, house, Senate and Supreme court justices. The performance over the last two years doesn't seem to justif a pay-raise to me. As for the fiscal cliff I am all for a flat-rate tax no deductions, no exemptions everyone pays the same percentage. The higher wage earners are already paying more at the same rate. That is a fair tax! Don't pemalize some guy because he is successful and cause him to want to hoard his money and not invest it in business and economy. BTW I live on a fixed income.

Bill,

People who disagree with religious mythology are not necessarily God haters. I, a theist/deist combination am an immense believer in a supreme intellectual architect (god), but am opposed to religious theology that denies the logic of nature and rationale of evolution which is Gods most useful tool for keeping the habitat, and numbers of predator and prey in balance, a tool which allows God to ensure life will continue to flourish, despite....

Look at all the interactive, interdependent body parts within, along with all the complex interactive, interdependent life forms and parts that make up whatever habitat, and deny evolution and God are not intertwined.

We are supposed to protect our families. Making schools gun free zones makes them an easy target for someone with a gun. If you think that taking away everygun you can find solves this, then you are crazier than that kid who killed 28 people, who was sane enough to realize when the authorities arrived with guns, he better check out so he didn't have to bear the consequences.

So, Why should God be protecting our kids, when we decided ourselves not to protect them, or protect them with skewed logic that leaves them wide open to mass destruction?

    Follow-up too Akron @1.25,

Jesus did indeed advocate the rich people giving to the poor. Google "jesus and the rich young ruler" and read the reference. Not once did he say to give it all to a bunch of left wing liberals to waste on whatever they wanted. The Pharisees tried to trap him also about should Jews pay taxes to Caesar and he pointed to a coin with Caesars likness and told them to give unto Caesar that which is his. It was a head tax or poll tax and every family paid, regardless of religion or culture. He didn't say to give him most of your possessions in the manner that the U.S. govt is headed.

Here are some laws that will be passed in the coming years. 1. On demand abortion, insurance companies forced to pay up, even multiple times. 2. Secret abortions for our young school girls, even seventh graders, no parental consent required. 3. Full gay marriage rights including social security and medicare survivorship for spouse, all pensions state or federal that only allow spousal survivorship currently for a man and woman.

All this will come about from a democrat run Congress, with a democrat President, and sanctioned by a democrat controlled SCOTUS. The republicans will fight hard but will be over come. It's our destiny.

Although the Chaplain often does open the sessions in prayer, there are throughout the year guest chaplains including Judaism, Islam, and many others perform the task.

The Chaplain also provides couselling to congress, conducts marriages, and conducts funerals for congress. I think someone available for spiritual consultation is better than having no spiritual consultation available at all.

It has been said, "God created man in thy own image". But how do we know man did not create an image of God in his own likeness, complete with a body, face, voice and emotional deficiencies of anger, vengeance and a tendency to discriminate non-like souls......Is it not true man has great difficulty envisioning an entity without a face, voice or human like emotions ?

Try this on for size, God is the eternal energy of life, and God IS everywhere, a soul, not man is God's particular life form, and a soul truly is, in the image, and is a chip off the old block

I tend to think of our existence within Time as quantum memory...individual and collective...representing and expressing the selection process of One Infinity within a living, growing, larger Self. We're all talking about the same 'Thing' no matter what we call It, it comes down to whether or not you think It is alive and knows it (or something like that).

Hello DB, there are over 7 billion people in the world and according to Wikipedia, Christians account for 29% of the people who believe in a little old man with a beard who lives in the clouds, that isn't a majority!

"When it comes to bull@!$%#, big-time, major league bull@!$%#, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bull@!$%# story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bull@!$%# story. Holy @!$%#!"

        Im not lost

Jesus told the rich young ruler that to follow him he needed to sell everything he had and give it to the poor. Rather than stopping there, read on. The fellow turned away sad because his riches were great. The problem wasn't the riches, it was he loved his wealth more than the kingdom of God!

Early Christians took this story to heart and often sold everything they had and gave it to the poor. While it is an honorable thing to do, and may be what God wants you to do, the first priority should be to do as you find God asking you to do so.

In a further point, you have Nicodemus. Tax collectors in Jesus times were rich. They were responsible for collecting what the government had required and permitted to to take more for their salaries. Nicodemus too wanted to be in the kingdom of God. Nicodemus volunteered to give to the poor and repay those he had legally taken more than he should have or even stole. Jesus never told him to sell everything he had.

Google might give you quick facts, but, what you get may be very lacking in the full understanding of the event.

Yes, a very simple proposition...God is Everything. Yes, must be energy. It gets weird to consider, but people shouldn't let the word "God" put them off (it did me, for quite a while) - you don't have to turn Bible thumper to think philosophically, observationally, rationally...everybody has to arrive at their own individual understanding.

There is no male or female heaven. The curious thing about the Jewish names for different aspects of god can be interpreted as "the breasted one".

As for the image of God. Tough one to respond to because man has a tendency to make gods in their own images. Yes plural. God not only could be a human, but a cow, a pig, a piece of fruit, a tree, or any element of nature, wind, cloud, water, sun, moon, rain, money, cars, government, Satan, an angel, a family member, a president, a senator, or themselves. God can be anything we want to designate as God or supreme to us. But when we do that, we make God subjected to US or Our opinion and something less than God. This creativity and limitations really can wreck havoc on what is real and not real.

Our bodies are finite, but per virtue of our bodies losing hearing, site, periods of lack of experiencing weakness, paralysis, we can be certain that our spirit and soul lives on after the body dies. We know that we had some beginning of consciousness of ourselves and our bodies. We know for at least thousands of years billions of souls have come into existence, and apparently still exist, but we just cannot see them.

I think that should be enough to convince people that a superior being put this all together. But what image? If you saw "God" would you know that it was "God"?

Bible says that no one has ever seen God. Yet the descriptions are numerous.

Right hand, left hand, arms, face, back, walks, eyes, mouth, voice, sits, creates, stands, bright, spirit, Joy, laughter, hate, jealous, thinking, reasoning, intelligence, remembers, anger, love (lots of this) sorrow, repentance, and man made in the image of God.

Yet in the Jewish and Christian faiths, things man isn't or no longer is. Truth, pure, holy, everlasting, the beginning and the end, everlasting, eternal, sees all, hears all, knows all, present everywhere.

The Bible says that everything you see, came from things that you cannot see. The physical was at some time spiritual.

This has been know for some 10 -15 years now. Look up Laminin. It is a human protein that holds every cell in your body together. Look at the chemical diagram. What does that look like? Look at the electron microscope image of it. What does it look like? Could this be the stamp of God on everything that lives?

There was a democratic congressman on the floor of the House today and he was taking issue with the lack of work done with this House of Representatives.

He stated that since August, the House was out of session for a total of 15 weeks.

And because of their irresponsible work habits, the United States Senate not only had to write and pass a bill that was the House's reponsibility, but they had to work New Year's Eve.

The House did not. And now they have the audacity to want to send it back?

          Pat,

Nobody wants to make cuts. Nobody especially the Republicans. Every time the republicans propose an idea for a cut, there is a deluge of how they are pushing granny over a cliff, starving people, making granny chose between dogfood to eat and medicine.

It's about time democrats stepped up and make good on their claims to be resposible.

From research the sequestration wasn't even their idea, it was a White House idea. After it was agreed to the constant drone in the media has been that it was their idea so the whole cliff thing was their fault.

G-Dog, it sounds to me like it's too late to send anything back to the Senate now. I agree with you about Cantor, he needs attention. This just may go to the floor, but we have to wonder who will vote for it. Will he need D support? Not that there's anything wrong with that. After all, the democrats ARE elected legislators. Something the GOP fails to recognize.

            We'll know soon.

            Happy New Year!

G-Dog,.....Agree completely, it took me a lifetime of witness and experience to realize what God and a soul are, a form of energy like no other, a form of energy which is conscious of self and surroundings. The human body, like all others, is nothing but a conglomerate of matter, a disposable vehicle which temporarily allows a soul to experience things of a physical nature like pain, cold and hunger, and a way to compare and define the differences between thy conflicting feelings of love, hate, compassion, greed, contentment, sorrow ect.

Life upon earth has nothing whatsoever to do with sin and forgivness, demons and saviors or heavan and hell....Life upon Earth is God's method for educating souls, it is God's way of providing us knowledge and wisdom, God's method for testing our level of compassion, and Gods way of preparing us for things yet to come. It is true, there is a reason and purpose for everything, and there is a here-after......after all.

It was God who established the curriculum, created Earth as a classroom, and life upon as the teacher.

            Trust,

I hope you read my post to ellis in 1.54.

Everyone of us has to learn everything we can, examine everything we can. There is so much out there to learn see and experience, that it can be pretty difficult to discern what is fact and what is fiction.

Being human has a major drawback in that we seem to have a natural bent to believe what we want to believe because it is convenient for us and what we want to do.

My wife's grandmother had a massive heart attack. Without a living will it fell to the brothers and sisters whether to have her resuscitated or not. They chose to resuscitate. She survived. When she gained consciousness, she wanted to know why they had okay-ed resuscitation. "She was just fine where she was at" according to her. The next time they left her slip away peacefully.

You are entitled to believe what you want. That is one of the gifts that God built into the universe. Free thinking, free will. But, take time to look into the matter more.

            DB Akron,

It is clear to me that you grasp the over-all perception of who, or what God may be, and do not rely solely upon the scriptures of the bible, which is after all, man written and interpreted. However, you still have a tendency to use biblical scriptures to validate your findings. Words are but words when void of a comprehensible definition.

Your are correct, however, just the mere fact souls are blessed with consciousness, emotions and a set of conflicting feelings is proof they were not derived from the building blocks of life scattered throughout the universe, things such as these are purely spiritual in nature, and could only have come about by conscious design.....There is a difference between life and alive, alive is a state of temporary being and life is a state of existence

No Bill. calling me (or anyone else) a god-hater is pretty silly.

There is no proof that such a creature exists, just like there's no proof that a tooth fairy exists, that a jesus-creature exits, that a Leprechaun exists, or that Gandalf exists. These are all beings that people talk about, imagine, wane on about their mythology. But there is no proof for their existence.

Suggesting that I, or anyone else, hates an an imaginary or mythical creature is rather silly. I don't hate your god-creature any more than I hate Harry Potter or Bilbo Baggins. There is no proof for their real or factual existence. I don't know ANYONE who hates imaginary creatures...that's a pretty stupid, uneducated suggestion on your part.

But -- it sounds like you're pretty bitter and angry just because people choose to disbelieve in creatures who you want to believe in, but whose existence(s) you cannot prove. That sounds like YOUR problem, not mine or anyone else's. You might want to Man-up and deal with your own issues, rather than project them upon others.

Cheers! I hope you feel better!

I suspect this goes to the floor tonite. The Senate is not in a bargaining mood, not after what the House pulled. Very little time to deal with cuts once Boehner walked away. He had his opportunity with President Obama.

This needs to go to the floor, otherwise the CBO said today we will add $4 Trillion to the deficit.

No, John, nobody actually "understands" that. Some choose to believe that, but that's it. You can't prove your cult god exists. Nobody has ever been able to provide evidence that their cult god exists. Let alone what that cult god thinks, wants or expects of people. But, that cults have done a great job illing millions of people all through history demanding that everyone think and worship exactly the same way they do.

Yes, cuts are in order. However before you touch
your so called entitlement programs lets address some additional costs.....

                  1. Runaway spending by Home Land Security

                  2. Runaway cost of Public Sector Workers

                  3. Runaway costs of Foreign Aid

                  4. Runaway cost of Military Hardware

                  5. Runaway cost of CONGRESS

                  6. Runaway cost of EPA

                  7. Runaway cost of TSA

When this is done then we can talk about Medicare,
Medicaid, Social Security, Welfare, and Unemployment…..

The GOP had a similar situation in the Great Depression and failed to show courage to act...what happened? The GOP lost the White House for 20 years (1932 - 1952) until Eisenhower had enough good sense to embrace the whole New Deal Programs and won in 1952.

During the 1952 campaign, some GOP supporters wanted to repeal social security, as some today's RepubliCONs' attitude toward Obamacare, but Ike came out to say 'NO' to the called for the repeal of social security. Ike believed that the elderly were taken care of by social security and it's good for the country.

Where is such common sense among today's Republicans?

Thanks for posting a history lesson Pigotry! Unfortunately, today's masses don't know history, or worse yet, get it from the likes of Bill O'Rielly or Newt Gingrich!

It took Keynesian economics to pull us out in the 1930's and 40's....it will take much more today since back then we were not selling our debt outside of our boarders! Also, back then, Americans bought war bonds to pay for the war debt where as today we have shipped that debt overseas to the Chinese! Of course, no one will hear of these history lessons on the so-called "liberal media." Hell, Ike would easily be a liberal politicians by today's standards.

So some guy dressed up with a collar says some words into the air to no one or nothing. There has never been or will be any proof of gods existence. At least the one postulated so far.If you look and read and learn, there are many gods and interpritations of it conceived by man.It is so evident that it takes willful ignorance to force yourself to overlook what reality is and demands from us.I know reality can be argued to be subjective but the best way I have read it described is ....we only believe in god today because we did yesterday.

Let us hope. Eternally deadlocked Congress, we are giving you thanks for actually working for us this day, and maybe even sometime again in the new year. The political struggles of the past year have revealed the divisions that exist in our nation. There are many American citizens who are angry, frustrated, and anxious for the future. This day is a day of history. Take responsibility for your own actions, members of the people’s house. May an imperfect compromise when viewed from the perspective of our differences not be undermined by a desire for political victory. This is difficult for all. But try to show the grace and courage to forge a constructive solution for the greater good of the nation and all Americans. Do not abandon us, Congress. May all that is done this day be for the greater good of the American people. 'Nuff said.

I am betting that the house GOP will not for for this and they will drive the nation full speed off the fiscal cliff.

The only thing the GOP should realize is that if they don't vote for the good of the country and stop this teaparty inspired donothingness - the entire party will effectively cease to exist in 2014 as with the economy tanking yet again - the voters, even those die-hard Obama hating ones will start voting for Dems.

They had a prayer??? Why would God help a bunch of self involved, could care less about the country Godless batch of do nothings if it's not for themselves? Why are there prayers and not voting going on. More stalling is all I see. Kick these idiots to the curb and let's get some people in Congress that actually care about the people they are supposed to be working for, since they are taking the money that comes from the taxes they resent.

Yea Lance, we'll ban only THE TRIGGER SECTION OF THE GUN. Owners can keep the rest to fondle.

Also, we'll require signature in person registration for every 223 ammo purchase like it used to be for hand gun ammo when I ran a gun shop.

JeffS- Why are we banning guns? Guns di nit kill people. People kill people using guns, knives, automobiles, explosives caused using lights and gas ovens, I even read an article some years back about a man who beat his wife to death with a frying pan. How many of these items are you willing to ban? I am all for law and order. I am an advocate for speedy execution of comvicted murderers regarless of age or mental disfunction. If you commit murder you make yourself a danger to society. I am for immigration reform too, send illegals home when caught.. Streamline the process for those trying to immigrate LEGALLY.

Dave -- this is a tired, disingenuous and ignorant counterpoint you offer.

All of those "other" things you listed are created for other purposes. Cars are created for transporation, but they do accidentally kill. Knives are created for the kitchen, but yes, you are right, someoen can go grab a steak knife and kill someone with it. Frying pans are for frying. Gas ovens for cooking...

Guns are designed, manufactured and sold for the intent to kill. Even go to a gun range -- what is the target used during practice? Most of the time, it is a full human silhouette, or a waist-up human half-silhouette, with a bullseye target inside the chest, and a bullseye target inside the head. Guns are made to kill. Assualt weapons are manufactured to kill even more people than a .45 auto pistol, which can do some serious damage already.

There is a reason people are talking about GUN CONTROL, and not KNIFE CONTROL or GAS OVEN CONTROL or FORD EXPLORER CONTROL. Guns are made primarily to kill. Even the practice on a range engages people to practice mostly at human-shaped targets. (And please, don't come at me with "oh, i shoot at beer cans and pumpkin-shaped targets." I'm not interested in that type of nonsensical monlogue from people like you. I'm a retired police officer with 33 years on the dept, and I know what goes on at a gun range. So, save your time and don't be an idiot in your reply.)

It's time for people like you to grow up -- if you want to debate the issue, then debate it intelligently without being disingenuous, ignorant and dishonest.

                          Cheers!

Your two sentences contradict one another, Dave. Law and ORDER, especially ORDER, do not call for the speedy execution of convicted murderers. Due Process is a primary element of Order and Law, and are absolutely necessary in our system of Justice. If we adopted your reckless notion of "the speedy execution of 'convicted murderers'" then the scores of people whose convictions have been reversed over the past decade, due to better forensics and DNA testing, would have been wrongfully killed by the State for a crime they didn't commit. We continue to see wrongfully convicted persons released from Death Row detention in states all over the US.

I never undertand people like you -- you're in such a hurry to kill other people. The one punishment that, once carried out, cannot be reversed. It makes your position about "responsible gun ownership" reek of being disingenous and falsely expressed.

And thank you again for pointing out in words that even a dim wit like Dave29506 can understand, that the death penalty is and always has been a failure and the evidence of moral bankruptcy. The death penalty does not, and never has, deterred murderers, and has been responsible for the deaths of untold innocent people.

President Obama (Democrats) has stated his stand on balancing the budget by raising revenue which was increased taxes on those making over $250K. In fact, the President ran his campaign on it and won by a sizable margin.

The Speaker of the House (Boehner (R)), the House Majority Leader (Cantor (R)), and Senate Minority leader (McConnell (R)) have stated they want to cut entitlements to balance the budget but, have not/will not state just what they want to cut.

Why won't the Republicans state what they want cut and by how much and/or be eliminated!

they have stated it in a backhanded way...They want to cut social security...to them the old are a waste, it doens't matter what they contributed before, it's what have you done for me lately.

they want to cut unemployment-If there is no unemployment then they can get you to work for whatever wage you will work for. This is also why they are unwilling to deal with the illigel immigrant problem. If they can get someone to work for 5 dollars an hour then that's exactly what they want, it imporves their bottom line. What they fail to realize is...that 5 dollars an hour in Guatamala or mexico is worth about 35 dollars an hour and it's all tax free...Tell ya what I'll take that deal...but I can't get it. I'm an american.

So in the end their agenda is clear...take as much as you can from the most people (the poor and middle class, or what's left of it) and give it to the rich.

It's as plain as the nose on your face.

But what get's me is the Lemmings that will face the brunt of such actions and will clap their hands all the way over the cliff.

If these guys have to have God make them cooperate then we are in deep @!$%#. If you think any of these guys actually look to God for guidance then we are truly screwed. These guys look to one and only one person-the guy in the mirror and what can they get out of it. They are all selfish, greedy bastards and are out for number one.

Republican religious fanatics can't accept compromise. This must have made their blood boil. What's next? A chaplain asking the religious nuts to give up their assault weapons?

What rate of taxes does God pay? I bet he is one of the "1-perent"

Actually, He is of the 101-percent or, if you wish, the 0-percent. Claiming charitable statuses, His "houses" pay no tax. And since they are run more like businesses these days and are so embedded with political causes (both Dem and Repub), they should pay taxes. I wish!

Well no wonder there's been no compromise. If we're waiting for God to intervene, nothing will ever get done. How about legislating in the real world, and leaving the imaginary one to Sunday church service?

Are we technically over the cliff?

                                            technically?

You are either on cliff, or off cliff!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                            There is no middle ground.

technically - yes, but Congress has until midnight Thursday to finish last minute business from last year.

You think at this point the White House would remind Congress - we went over the cliff, time to start over.

Anybody here miss a deadline and pay a penalty for it?

Congress set this deadline last year - now they try and kick the can further. We get to pay the penalty for their refusal to give the black man in the white house 1 victory for all people. Thinking this was Congress's "Waterloo"
