Poll: Obama, Clinton most admired again

Gallup has released its list of "Most Admired Woman and Most Admired Man" living anywhere in the world, and for the 11th year in a row, Hillary Clinton tops the list of women, while Barack Obama is the most admired man for the fifth year in a row.

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivers a speech "Frontlines and Frontiers: Making Human Rights a Human Reality" at Dublin City University in Ireland in this file photo from Dec. 6, 2012.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Condoleezza Rice are next behind Clinton.

Behind Obama are Nelson Mandela, Mitt Romney, Billy Graham, George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI.

The "Most Admired Man" poll began in 1946 and was expanded to include "Most Admired Woman" in 1948.

Clinton has topped the list 17 times in the last 20 years, starting in 1993. Eleanor Roosevelt comes in second as the most "Most Admired Woman," a designation she gained 13 times.

Dwight Eisenhower was the "Most Admired Man" 12 times, the most for any man, followed by Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, who each had eight first-place finishes.

The results are based on a Gallup poll taken from Dec 19 to 22nd.

Yes,

A speedy recovery. We need her in 2016. We need someone with the guts to stick to what all of US believe.

It looks like Obama is doing his usual CAVE and the tax threshold is now heading to $500K.

He has ALL the cards, yet he's "negotiating" them away. We need someone more like Hillary,

I bet that Bush nominated himself, and found a way to vote for himself enough times to make the list, just like he did in order to get into the Oval Office.

GWB was the most hated president in recent history and left office with something like a 12% approval rating, which is why I can't imagine how, or by whom, his name was introduced in the first place unless, of course, he did it himself.

Small business. Have you ever made a deal with anyone. when negotiations are going on, You never start out where you want to end up. You start in the President's case low, $250K That was never where he wanted to end up. He would settle for $500K But if he started at $500K he would never get there. You never start out negotiations where you want to end up. Use your head fore something other than a hat rack. President Obama knows he can't have it all his way. And he has other things to deal with all the time. The Tax deal also has unemployment tied to it. There are 2 million people on Unemployment that will lose that Unemployment. So its not as simple as you think it. Our system is a give and take system, that is the way it was set up.

Do you think Republicans would give up anything if they didn't have to?

SmBus - I understand but I also know, in some cities $250,000 doesn't go as far as in others. So, a tax floor of $500,000 is not a bad compromise.

I see none of the usual characters are spouting off about Hillary - since she clearly DID have a concussion that has now resulted in a blood clot. Funny how when they are shown to be wrong - they just don't show up!

Chuck, sometimes you don't have to give up anything. Have you ever bought a car? Not all negotiations are two-sided. Sometimes the price is the price.

Unemployment is a card Republicans have, but do you really think that's a strong one? Are they really going to get away with cutting off millions of people? They might, but it's only because they truly don't care about Americans at all. But that's not news. Unpatriotic Republican Swine. It will just help their departure in 2014. That's the only thing they don't want.

Get well soon Madame Secretary.

I disagree that an additional tax bracket above $500K is a loss. I consider it a gain, as it takes away the Conservative argument "but you'd raise taxes on people almost like you and I, except they make slightly more money."

Our current large and widening income disparity problem isn't caused by professionals married to other professionals. Yes, they're in the 2% but there's a certain validity to the argument that they have a good deal in common with the rest of us. The real problem is that slightly above that the incomes and net worth of those above (particularly when you get into the top fractions of 1%) run away from the rest of us like the Starship Enterprise engaging warp drive.

EVERY YEAR those at the very tip-top of the heap have been getting income increases of 15-25% while the rest of us have had income progress that hasn't even kept up with inflation over the long term.

Widening income disparities have barely even made the radar screen in terms of public discourse and that needs to change.

AG, John,

This is the difference between Democrats and Republicans, and the reason we are where we are after 30 years of getting rolled by Republicans. WE compromise. THEY don't.

I'm not saying digging in is any kind of solution, but giving when we aren't required to isn't something Republicans ever do. Why should we?

Who did they poll? Liberals? No wonder these people are considered the most admired. This poll is the most skewed poll I have every seen.

Just more liberal propaganda while the Obama administration tries to take away your attention from the fiscal cliff.

#1.26 - Mon Dec 31, 2012 11:54 AM EST

President Obama hasn't "caved"; there are other issues in this so-called fiscal cliff that are as important, if not more important than whether it is $250K or $500K. Extending unemployment benefits, a fiscal cliff deal, not forcing draconian spending cuts during an economic recovery which would be devastating to the economy are critical aspects. According to polls, the American people want both sides to compromise.

Unhappy: "Who did they poll? Liberals?"

Hate to make you even more unhappy, but it's even worse than you think - they say that "Behind Obama are Nelson Mandela, Mitt Romney, Billy Graham, George W. Bush and Pope Benedict XVI.", but what they don't mention is that if you go to the poll itself, President Obama got 30% of the vote and none of the others mentioned got more than 3%.

But if it'll make you any happier, they also indicate that "Obama's position as the Most Admired Man is not unusual. Sitting presidents, with their extremely high visibility and essentially continuous presence in ongoing news coverage, have won the Most Admired Man honor 56 times out of the 66 years in which Gallup has asked the question -- including each of the past 32 years in a row".

So cheer up - that means the President - whether Democrat or Republican - has won every year since Jimmy Carter in 1980.

And hey, at least we didn't pick Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber..... :)

If you had someone in mind that might have been overlooked, why not name the person?

At least you would have made better sense than just blaming Democrats all the time!

Instead, Republicans do the same wrong things over and over again -- make complaints without naming their idea of a solution. At least if you had provided a name of someone that would have been "food for thought" instead of the same old useless Republican rant.

Why is it so darn difficult for Republicans to communicate, instead of just name-calling all the time?

SmBusiness, I just disagree. Also get a tired of democrats whining "we caved" everytime we don't get everything we want or we disagree with some aspect of negotiations--makes us sound like Boehner's whining crowd. We don't even know exactly WHAT was given in return or even if any deal has been reached; all we know is speculation. We've heard the "close to agreement" song many times and each time, the repubs walk away--I don't expect repubs to agree to anything today. It looks far better for democrats and President Obama to have compromised from $250K to $400K or $500K when the republicans walk away than the reverse. I'd like to think they won't but they've had far better deals offered by President Obama and democrats in the past, including before Christmas; in fact, that's how we ended up with a fiscal cliff in the first place--the GOPers walked away from the "big deal" over raising taxes on the 2%.

Jody,

I don't think we know if there has been a "cave" or not, so I don't think it's time to decide if we disagree.

I'm just going on what I perceive to be history. Democrats give more then they get. Maybe that's just my perception because I'm a Democrat.

Perhaps Republicans feel the same way, but the facts are that the rich, represented by Republicans, have done quite well over the last 30-40 years, while everybody else, represented by the Democrats, haven't. Those are the facts.

If Republicans walk away now, it would only be because they believe they will get something better if they wait. History also shows that the do win this way. No taxes were raised at the end of 2010, or in the summer of 2011 coming up to those two precipices. They got their way. When it looked like they were going to give more than wanted, they punted.

Because Obama actually cares about Americans, the Unemployment card is a very valuable one. My thought is he will give a LOT, more that it's worth to avoid that. Everyone will come together and take credit for avoiding the cliff, even though only one side really tried, and only one side gave anything.

SBONY, we are in full agreement on at least one very important point. Democrats have a history of caving that goes all the way back to the heyday of the Democratic Leadership Council...if not farther. The problem with "triangulation" is that once the strategy is known it's easy to start from a REALLY extreme position in confidence that the final outcome will be just about what you wanted in the first place.

I admire the political skill of Bill Clinton but I believe that during that era Democrats gave up entirely too much ground and established a precedent that's helped lead us to the ridiculous GOP that we have today. That's not to say Democrats "created" the present Conservative Movement, but I do mean to say that chasing your opponent at top speed to the right doesn't lead you to the center.

John: What part of my statement isn't fact? Most countries of the world are run by thugs and they hate the US. That hasn't changed since Obama took over, as he pledged it would. The economy is still in the tank. Remember that "stimulus" package that was needed to keep unemployment from going above 8% (Obama's words, not mine)? We never saw unemployment under 8% during Obama's first term. Well, the very last month they claimed it went below 8%, but they had to stretch that by claiming all of a sudden a ton of people were no longer looking for just, and thus weren't counted as unemployed. Annual income for families has been dropping. Mainly because the new jobs are that Obama claims to have created are the dreaded hamburger flipper jobs that the libs so lambasted when a repub was in the WH.

witchrunner;

1) You haven't proven that "most of the world hates America", in fact polling shows that the standing of the US has improved in the eyes of most of the world since the election of President Obama.

2) The economy is still soft, but it has improved IMMENSELY since the dark days of the Great Republican Recession.

3) Your conclusion that "most or the world admires Obama for destroying America" cannot be supported as there are no facts in evidence. (one of several instances in your statement of begging the question)

4) Since you yourself state that unemployment was NEVER below 8% it is obvious there was never a promise within the legislation as passed that unemployment wouldn't rise above 8%.

5) Unemployment has been counted in the same way for many years...if you think the books were cooked at the end of 2011 then they've been cooked in the same way for decades and the numbers are consistent, therefore still meaningful.

5a) Cooking the books would be a massive conspiracy requiring THOUSANDS of government employees and private employers to collude. It isn't plausible.

6) Annual income for families has been falling for YEARS, thus proving the failure of the Conservative economic experiment rather than any policy of President Obama.

7) In the dark days of the Bush Administration Conservatives told us manufacturing was dead, the USA was now a service economy, and we'd better learn to subsist on burger flipping wages.

7a) Manufacturing has been one of the leaders in the most recent recovery.

I can't help that you choose to argue with no facts in evidence. As long as you choose to do so this will be the result.

Where was your outrage when 10 were killed in 2002 at the US Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan?

How about in 2004 when 2 were killed, 9 injured in an attack on the US Embassy in Uzbekistan?

Were you looking for answers later in 2004 when 8 lost their lives at the US Consulate in Saudi Arabia?

What about in 2006 when the US Embassy in Syria was attacked with the loss of an American live?

Do you know if anyone was brought to justice for throwing a grenade into the US Embassy in Serbia?

Ten lost their lives when the US Embassy in Yemen was bombed in 2008, but I don't recall any calls for a Joint Congressional Committee to investigate.

So save us your phony outrage. State Department posts in unstable countries are dangerous duty and always have been. It isn't all cocktail parties and schmoozing the Emir, you know.

The poll is a great example of how far our great country has fallen! That a inept and dishonest president who is spending the USA into bankruptcy and a womanizing boozer have been selected as most admired is shameful! I'm sure a few porn stars made that list too (Rachel Maddow maybe?)!

I wonder which enemy of obama will be appointed Ambassador to Libya? I'm sure Hillary would like to see Bill get that job, eh?

Correct, he certainly was. So was Ayatollah Khomeini (1979).

From your tone, it's apparent you're unaware of Time's criteria for their 'Man of The Year'.

Their criteria is "the individual or group of individuals who have had the biggest effect on the year's news", according to their web site. The biggest effect....not necessarily the most positive effect.

After all, the drunken little bush won once, too.

I think it is a safe bet that the pollsters have a pretty good idea of the affiliation of the people that are being polled in advance. Count all the Obama and Clinton supporters and circular file the non Obama/GOP responses supporters! There are no such things as non biased polls in this country any more when Obama and his minions control the majority of media outlets! I knew there was a reason I vote strictly Independent nowadays.

What did obama do the last 4 years that could be admired by even the most discriminating American!?? Most Americans who work and pay taxes think he's a failure and has a socialistic agenda for our once great country!

Name one real contribution the neighborhood organizer did to help reduce the deficit, cut spending, negotiate a budget, propose a budget (that got more than zero votes that is... lol)!

Johntho, listening to you and the others I can only think how completely and utterly polarized you are about conservatives and liberals that you fail to understand the huge gradients that exist in-between. It would therefore surprise you to know that many conservatives and liberals (not politicians) have the same ideas in common but are bombarded by the media to keep us fighting. By far the biggest difference is that Republican law makers are indeed fighting to help small business while the last 4 years has seen a historic rise in roadblocks that impede small business. From Dodd/Frank to Obamacare to thousands of regulations that have completely tied the hands of the private sector and prevented the recovery that we all need. Frankly, a strong economy is the only priority for this country.

I am sure you are surprised to hear that I am a huge fan of Hillary. She screwed the pooch with Bengazi but would have made a far better president than Obama. Yeah, she is a lefty but she would have done the things necessary to get our economy going, and that would have been good enough for most conservatives. You need to know that indeed conservatives are quite fearful, but not because of gay marriage or other social issues but because Obama is a terrible president who, in the end will cause continued and relentless hardships for the poor and middle class in his pursuit of policies that only satisfy the fringes.

SmBizGirl, seriously, and you know that Hillary would have made a better president than Obama exactlly how? Republicans did their best to destroy both Bill and Hillary in the 1990's; during the 2007 primary, the GOPers were skewering Hillary Clinton when they thought she would be the nominee so it isn't likely she would have been treated any better or any differently had she won than Pres Obama was treated; the GOPers would have blocked, obstructed, denied her presidency as well. In my opinion, the only reason you are a Hillary "fan" is because she isn't our President right now.

Benghazi happened for a lot of reasons, some failure by the Administration and the Congress but mainly because terrorist are always trying to kill and have been thwarted countless times in the past 10 years, but once in a while they get very lucky and manage to carryout their rein of destruction and death. By many people America is considered to be terrorist when their innocent children and citizen are killed with our bombs and guns as we seek to enforce our will overseas. Unfortunately when you choose to live by the gun you may find you die by the gun. Violence breeds violence and make no mistake we are a particularly violent nation. Take a look at what Romney said he would do, cut all aid to Egypt, send armed troops into Benghazi and not give their own government a chance to bring things under control. Had he been in charge we would have had a terrible disaster on our hands and very likely a new war in the Middle East. Glad that Obama was my President and kept his head even with all the screaming and yelling of the totally politically oriented and totally wrong radical right.

Multiple people died in multiple embassy/consulate attacks during the GW Bush Administration as well. Unfortunately embassy duty in unstable regions of the world is dangerous work. It's also important work, though, and we're fortunate there are people who care enough about our nation to volunteer for these posts.

Why is Obama even on that list? What could he possibly be doing that would warrant admiration from any sane person. I get the fact that many liberals like the idea of a liberal president but he only has his friends and bundlers best interests in mind. If he truly cared about this country, the middle class and the poor we would have a thriving economy and 5% unemployment. That's the first step and one that is 4 years overdue.

SmallbizGirl - So the surplus that the party of "No ideas" inherited and squandered, driving the world into the worst recession since the great depression, and 4 years, blocking American progress, your progress, is not taken into account.

If this president was a Republican you would want his sculpture on Mount Rushmore. Imagine......President Barack Hussein Obama. You know I like it! It has a nice American ring to it.

LaserFox: Who's spending the money now? After 4 years, we still see no improvement. The recovery as of now is propagated by debt that is passed on to our children. Where is Obama's progress?

In four years he has accomplished nothing except to raise taxes on people to accomplish what he thinks will be of importance. Once he leaves office, he won't care if he made the country go off a fiscal cliff. But it is democrats like you who will still blame republicans for obstructing "progress".

SmallBiz and CT - you two have no concept of reality and it shows. Your hatred of everything left of over the cliff rightwing is so sad and reflects on just who you are.

The silly comment about flatscreen TV and government cheese show how desperate you two are. I've been fortunate enough to never need government help although I don't begrudge anyone who is having a difficult time from getting help.

You two are truly sad desperate people. I hope you find a way to get better. Must be difficult to wake up each day and be you!

If he truly cared about this country, the middle class and the poor we would have a thriving economy and 5% unemployment..."

I very much admire President Obama and both Bill and Hillary Clinton because, for one thing, they have done more for the elderly, middle class, and the poor than anyone I can think of.

It's Republicans who are doing everything in their power to stall our Economic Recovery because Democrats have been so good for this country AND the American People that there's no doubt Democrats are more likely to win elections than Republicans.

When are Republicans going to start moving this country ahead, instead of backwards? And why aren't Republicans able to put the American People and our country first, instead of only concentrating on the rich and their interests overseas?

Hey CT -- I'm 66 years old. I started working when I was 12. I worked 30 hours a week when I was in high school. I put myself through college, started, ran and sold several businesses. I've been in the private sector my entire life. Try to understand this ditto-head -- it IS NOT a " love fest with the entitlement society" -- it's a disgust with people like Romney, George W. Bush, and the Koch brothers who were born with a silver spoon in their yaps and now believe they are somehow morally superior to anyone who isn't a member of the lucky sperm club.

Mitt Romney, George W. Bush? Seriously? A bald-faced liar and an incompetent who was appointed President in 2000? I'm curious, how many times was George W. Bush the most admired? I'm thinking maybe 2001, 2002 and that was it for Bush 43. Definitely, "Dubya" nominated himself and Ann and Tagg nominated Mitt because, after all, Mitt really didn't want to be president!

Prior to the campaign when I think we saw the true Mitt Romney I might have said I admired him. He did seem ambitious but he also seemed to be motivated by public service and true to his religion. He surely did not wear well under the glare of the national spotlight, though, did he? I wonder if Mitt really wants to be admired or if that is for Ann? Notice she isn't on the list anywhere!

This is hilarious reading this love fest between the piggy and the red head fister!! I do not want anyone to suffer, but it is a very strong possibility that Hillery is still ill from the Benghazi Flu. It is conceivable that it could last until the 2916 primaries. Let's face it...she is just as phony and dishonest as the rest of the liberal leadership, and the morons that post on this site are nothing more than lemmings following their leader to the free stuff lines. You are certainly entitled to your opinions, but that is where the entitlements should end!

seeking free stuff...delusional? You do not think that Hillary is above having a subordinate say what ever she wants them to say? Is it a coincidence that every time she was scheduled to testify she was unable to? Just like the administration. They have the entire media in their pocket saying whatever takes to stay in power. This is the definition of corruption, you jerk. I am not sure where jealousy comes into the picture. I work for a living, own a nice house, and enjoy a comfortable way of life. Hey fisty...having a job and being self supporting is not bragging and should not be considered a "fantasy". It is a way of life in America. I guess in your circles work is a bad word.

"Fluking" is an admittedly bad play on words paying homage to the phony that you and your band of narrow minded ill informed lemmings look up to. You know, the one that cannot pay for her rubbers to get laid.

I do agree on one thing...2013 will be better than 2012. At least it will get us closer to seeing the liberals out of office.

You and your merry band of idiots really should relax and perhaps look beyond NBC and the other hideous mainstream media that you parrot. Even consider watching Fox a little. You might even learn something...although I doubt it.

CT-- I know this is very hard to believe, but, I think Piggy et alia honestly feel this way. Yes, it's a very romanticized perception. I think for many women Hillary symbolizes something well beyond Hillary herself.

One thing I have noticed is the degree to which so many posting here impugn the intelligence of other posters. The other thing is that these people really have a lot of hatred and anger that they want to lay on someone.

Strange thing. As I recall, both Obama and Hillary at various times have made appeals for Americans to come together. Yet when I read the vitriol on these comments, I can only assume they think those comments were addressed somehow to "other" Americans -- not to themselves.

On the other hand, could you all keep it clean?

Happy New Year. I hope it is a better one for us all.

He wasn't allowed at the repub convention so even conservatives know he is a fool. To have his name in the mix makes the results very questionable.

Is that why his Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, told him in September 2008 that the entire world's banking system is going to collapse unless he (Bush) passes TARP? Yea, one great economy alright?

Again, go to the link and look at the actual results. President Obama got 30% of the votes, while Bush 43 got all of 2% and Bush 41 a whopping 1 %. And they indicate it was an open-ended question, so their names were only "in the mix" because a handful of respondents volunteered them.

SmallBiz - you truly DON'T have a clue! Bush spent as quickly as he could - to hell with any budget - remember he started with a surplus! And, yes, he got bills passed because Congress didn't vow to block everything he proposed - unlike the treasonous Republicans today. Plus, Bush put 2 wars on credit cards - didn't include them in his budget.

You don't know anything and it shows!

I guess Barack gets to be Prom King and Hillary gets to be Prom Queen.

Michelle and Bill might get a little upset when King and Queen dance in the spotlight to strains of "Faithfully" by Journey.

This popularity contest is so much high school sugar-coated hooey. That's right, I said hooey.

I mean, Richard Nixon won 4 times himself, so that pretty much sums up the importance of this poll.

The fact is SS, you are biased against Mitt or any Republican. You offer no facts, just your anti-white anti-Rich, anti-Conservative OPINION, which I would defend your right to offer. In this case you are simply wrong. Furthermore to bring up his wife is classless on your part, but what do we expect from Democrats. I have a personal friend who worked with Hilliary during the 90'S the inside stories of her "class" would make your hair stand on end I suppose that is not fair either.

I have to say that I'm biased against investment capitalists. They collect money from investors (other people), buy companies for pennies on the dollar, send the employees down the road, sell off the capital assets, and make a fortune. Mitt Romney is a perfect example of this exercise. Has nothing to do with the party - has everything to do with the man.

Exactly so SDN. The story of Tribune Companies this week is a perfect example. The holding company collected a bunch of newspapers through leveraged buyout, saddling them with enormous debt. Then they went to bankruptcy to write down a huge portion of that debt, with the holding company collecting THEIR management fees and other payouts the whole time. Now they sell the properties for whatever they can get for them, and the papers have been steadily laying people off the entire time.

Eisenhower really is probably the only predsident that accomplished some great things and vocalized the issues to come in the future that became pretty much true. With the press/media - and military government infrastruture.

This poll is the result of media corruption. The Benghazi Report (bipartisan) shows that Clinton and Obama basically murdered the US people in Libya. Obama and Clinton should be charged with negligent homicide. The US new media should be charged with domestic terrorism.

More tripe from the tripe-writers... Just as a reminder: Hillary and her hillbilly lapdog, Bill, came close to bankrupting the state of Arkansas while they were "First People" there (not to mention the foolhardy shenanians they pulled on us as Prez and First Bitch), and as far as Moo-chelle goes --- it don't matter what kind of bag ya put it in, it's STILL trash! Oh, excuse me. That makes me a bigot, I forgot! (Yes, I am a bigot --- I'm bigoted against ANY piece of crap that feels like playing "God" with my nation, whether the POS is black, white, half black and half white like the current pretender, red, or purple polka-dotted!)

Okay, Bruce - or the other people who voted for this comment - here's the deal: I won't call you a bigot if you can explain to me why you feel it's so necessary to call ANYONE these sort of names. Is this what your mother taught you? Is this what you're teaching your own children? Or did you learn to act towards other people this way in school or in church? Is it okay with you if people refer to YOUR mother, YOUR wife, or YOUR daughter as a bitch or cow or trash? Does it really make you feel proud and superior? Do you honestly think you're winning anyone over to your point of view? Can you explain to us exactly what you just accomplished with this post?

Again - I'll refrain from calling you a name if you can explain to me why you can't do the same.

                              We'll be waiting.....

Amen, JoAnne. It amazes me how folks who may disagree with the policy of the current President do not articulate their disagreement and propose a counter argument but, rather, resort to name calling and derogatory references of his family. How quickly these comments flow as they type. Trash? Hardly. The President received a BA from Columbia University, a law degree (doctorate) from Harvard Law, was Editor of the Havard Law Review, (appeared in Newsweek), was a State Senator, then US Senator from Illinois, has written two books (along with collaborating on two children's books) and became President of the United States of America, the greatest country ever formed, by the time he was fifty. He was just re-elected by 4 million votes. Respect is hard to give, however, if there is no self-respect and I believe that is what is at play here. Along with Fox-fueled racism.

                              Henry -

No, YOU think about it, because you've apparently got nothing better to do. The rest of the world has accepted the truth and has long since moved on.

Read what Ceelle just wrote about self-respect and then maybe you'll understand.

                              Oh, and Bruce? Still waiting......

Ceelle, thank you for your comment. Excellant. I admire both the President and Hillary. They each speak and work for the people, that is why they are admired. The President is at the White House working this evening, not with his family, but staying at work to try and make a compromise for the people. He is admired because the people of this Nation realize he is there for them, speaking for them. Congress is so locked into their ideology they would rather see this Nation go over a cliff than compromise. I sleep better at night knowing that Obama is our President. Someone has to represent us, the folks that are not rich, work hard and do not have the power of the connected and rich.

Stream of consciousness posting rarely works, especially when it's nothing but a hateful rant.

Henry: We all thought about these things - before the election.

Bill, the election is over....you lost. The world moves on, with or without your ilk.
