Markey to run for MA Senate seat

NBC News confirms the news that Massachusetts Congressman Ed Markey (D) will seek the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by John Kerry, who's been nominated to be President Obama's next secretary of state.

Markey was first elected to Congress in 1976 at the age of 30, and he represents a district in the Boston suburbs. He's the third-ranking Democratic member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

On the Republican side, all eyes are fixed on whether outgoing Sen. Scott Brown (R) -- who was defeated in November -- will also seek Kerry's Senate seat in a special election.

Scott Brown lost by 8 points. Last month. 8 points.

The more people got to know Brown, the less they liked him. His debates did him in big time. He will be the same candidate next summer as he was this year. There is no there there with him. He just blows with the wind.

If the Obama & Elizabeth Warren democratic ground game is any indication, Brown's third campaign will resemble his second campaign. And he will lose.

Elizabeth Warren, President and Michelle Obama will help who ever the democratic nominee is. As we saw this past election, money can't buy you love.

Intelligence, hard work and a willingness to govern all will. Markey will be a formidable candidate. Brown will not.

Brown should save himself the agony of defeat a second time, he should take a clue from Romney and many others once the electorate has declined on you they don't change their minds. They already decided he was the loser and did not want him to have that seat, and based on the recent actions of his party their is no way they will change their minds, if he runs he will lose by an even bigger margin than he just did.

Forrest, I'm starting to look forward to this campaign now. By next summer it's going to be fun. Rep. Markey has a strong record to run on. And if the GOP in power now are any indication, the last thing we're going to want to do is put another one in the Senate next summer.

Rep. Markey is in a good position to get people to understand that.

Pat, good points.

The real Scott Brown showed up for the 2012 election, not the phony, pick-up truck driving one. His and his staff's unwarranted attacks on Elizabeth Warren's character, not her politics, but her character opened the eyes of many voters.

Layton, Scott Brown will never go away. We're stuck w/him whenever an election spot opens. Just like Romney.

Jody, that's exactly what happened. Those two were changing leads in the polls throughout the year, but after the debates it became clearer to the voters who Brown was and they didn't like it. His behavior towards Eliz. Warren was so disrespectful, particularly coming from a candidate who was bought.

One very cold April day we went down to Baltimore to see Pedro pitch against the Orioles. Rep. Markey was @ the game, sitting a few rows in front of us. He was there by himself, just quietly watching the game. Occasionally people would go over to him and just talk baseball with him, and he couldn't have been nicer.

WASHINGTON -- Representative Edward Markey, who led the congressional investigation into the 2010 Gulf oil spill, hailed Thursday’s record $4.5 billion fine against BP, saying it could be just the first installment in what could be billions of dollars more in penalties levied against the oil giant.

Representative Edward J. Markey, a national leader on energy and the environment, chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and the Energy and Environment Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Since Speaker Pelosi appointed Rep. Markey Chair in 2007, the Select Committee has held more than 50 hearings and contributed to the advancement of smarter energy and climate policies, including the first increase in fuel economy standards in three decades, which Rep. Markey authored. The newly created Energy and Environment Subcommittee will have unprecedented jurisdiction over national energy policy and play a central role in drafting energy and climate legislation in a new era of change.

In 2008, he introduced the Investing in Climate Action and Protection Act (iCAP), legislation that would slash global warming emissions and make America the leader in clean technology solutions. Introducing the first "Cap and Invest" system, iCAP would cut emissions 85% by the year 2050, set up a system for 100% auctions and invest money generated from polluters back to consumers and clean technology solutions.

Pat--that is terrific that Rep. Markey is an expert on global warming--you folks in Mass. are sensible enough to believe in it!!

My Republican father recently said that he thought "maybe" there was something to this global warming thing----this after the warmest Nov. in history and until yesterday a snow-free winter here!

My only concern with Markey running is that we need good Democrats in the House more than we do in the Senate. Wouldn't it be better to find a candidate who would not have to leave his position in the House?

Only a libbie in libbie MA can get elected!

Hmm...what was Romney then? Oh yes, he was the 'severely conservative' governor of Massachusetts.

The more people got to know Brown, the less they liked him.

You mean, the more the idiots of MA realized he wasnt just a left-wing extremist in an empty suit like warren.

The woman couldnt produce a sentence without saying millionaires and billionaires, she wouldnt do interviews on radio because she knew she had nothing to say that was dictated by her union rhetoric book, she couldnt answer questions because she doesnt know anything except leftwing talking points.

MA lost huge in that election, they showed what mindless fools they are, all they got was another democrat to drive another state to extinction. If RI, CT and NH didnt need the jobs, MA would be the same mess that they are, and all the business friendliness was introduced by romney.

If left up to Warren, everyone would be a public employee and forced to be in a union, or just be collecting welfare, the way every liberal shill wants things.

Only a libbie in libbie MA can get elected!
Any Kennedy's out there?

The election of kennedy jr this season proves everything i said about how stupid the people of MA are.

Just playing devil's advocate, but I'd think Brown has a lot more name recognition state-wide than Markey ... whether that's good or bad remains to be seen, but I wouldn't place any bets just yet...

Brown's name recognition is really more of a disadvantage. He's not particularly popular in a liberal state like Massachusetts.

    Hi Ursula--

Markey does, in fact, have great name recognition within Massachusetts. He won't suffer much there. And he has a dignity, a presence, that is compelling. Brown will come off poorly (again) in comparison.

I would think the people of Mass. would be tired of Scott Brown----a third statewide election seems a bit much. Plus his disrespect of Elizabeth Warren told us a lot about his character. Good luck to Rep. Markey---I guess the Senate is marginally more functional than the House, especially if they do filibuster reform.

Quiz of the day. They call it the House of Representatives...who do these Republicans represent, two percent of their constituents or 98 per cent of the people? Answer: a. 98% b. 2% c. 2% d. 2%.

These guys simply forgot what their job is, which is to REPRESENT THE PEOPLE...MOTHER OF ALL MOTHERS...and republican middle class income people voted for these monsters and unbeknown to them they think they are being served by the likes of Boehner, Cantor and Teabaggers. They think these guys are looking out for them, which is totally admitting they don't follow government activities of any sort..if Rush Limbaugh says Democrats are Liberal trash, they must be...it takes the need to think right out of the equation.

Just a blast putting up with these idiots crap. that over 51 percent of us figured out.."the big insult".

Someone much brighter than I needs to write a book called, "Educating the Politically Challenged"..Chapter 1., Recognizing who is screwing you on a national level...Chapter 2., Recognizing political groups who are screwing you on a national level...Well you get it.

Agreed, Jack. The loons who support their own enslavement by big business are rather easily manipulated. They cling to God and guns, just as Obama said.

The RWNJs are too simple-minded, fearful, and lazy to think for themselves so they let those 'geniuses' Rush Limbaugh and Fox News do their thinking for them.

    Scary.

    Jack and KB, nice posts.

The last month has shown how absolute power corrupts here in the State of Michigan. They're calling us "Michissippi" now. Pubbies rushed to ram their agenda through in the waning days of the lame duck Congress in Lansing. These fascists have done damage that will outlive them by decades. Only the Connecticut massacre caused our dictator Governor Snyder to back off of the "guns in daycare centers" bill he was going to sign.

Progressives: Michigan should be a warning to the rest of you as to what happens when the Pubbies assume total power. DON'T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO YOU TOO!!

These people are not bashful about flaunting total power, and they know how to use it when they get it. Democrats, on the other hand, look for bipartisan relationships, and try to sing KumBahYah.

I thought the Bush years were warning enough, but I guess not.

Hopefully the Mass electorate will rebuke Scott Brown and send him back to where he came from: modelling underwear with Elliott Spitzer.

Well said GOPisextinct, Snyder and his band of merry men are puppets on a string, and that string is being pulled by Dick Devos and the Mackinac center of conservative disease. Let it at least come to some good in states like WI., and Ohio that has a large contingent of hard working union people. Republicans hate working people and prove it time and time again and yet there is a certain portion of these people that buy into their B.S.. We must educate and use Michigan as an example of how bad it can get under a fascist government.

Thanks John. Pubbies own our House, Senate, Governor's office, Supreme Court and a lot of mayoral and city posts. For people that are supposed to be for "small government" there is certainly no shortage of Pubbies here.

Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a flock of em'; there are clouds of em'.

Progressives: Don't stay on the couch in this, or any other election season. If you love your government, then get up and fight for it,.... or you will suffer the same fate we have here under Fuhrer Snyder and Field Marshall Bolger.
