According to House Republican leadership aides, House GOP leaders have not yet called their members back to Washington D.C., and WILL NOT be in session tomorrow for legislative business. According to one GOP aide, "It's up to Senate Democrats to act right now."
During the House Republican conference meeting late Thursday night, leadership told the conference that they would be given 48 hours before being called back to D.C. after Christmas. According to aides, leadership has not given that notice yet.
On Friday, the House passed a motion to adjourn until Dec. 27 at 2:00 pm, but because the Senate failed to also pass the motion, the House was required to hold a short "pro forma" session on Monday. It will likely hold another pro forma session Thursday, during which no legislation will be considered.
According to a GOP aide, "Scheduling decisions are still being discussed."
Meanwhile, President Obama is now scheduled to leave Hawaii -- where he and his family have been celebrating the Christmas holiday -- later tonight and will arrive in Washington tomorrow.

Calling names doesn't help anything. There are a lot of reasons why Congress isn't working. One of the most important is that a lot of Ayn Rand fans, Social Darwinists, and other highly principled ideologues were put into the House of Representatives in 2010, out of disgust with authority in general and a desire to sweep out the garbage and bring in fresh and eager faces.
Boy, was that misguided. Nobody bothered to look beyond the impulse to "get rid of the old". And we STILL hear cries for dumping everyone in Congress and bringing in a new crowd -- with no thought given to exactly what that new crowd should be like.
Since their election, the zealots have had their districts gerrymandered until it's now going to be difficult to get them out and get Washington moving again.
We don't seem to have learned much from that debacle. If we're faced with another fiscal cliff and another downgrading of US Treasuries because some of our representatives, like Michelle Bachmann, call for a default on government debt, we will only be getting what we seem to want. These crisis will become annual events, like a Fourth of July parade.
In the absence of a willingness to compromise, in the absence even of common sense, the result is a collapse of the government. This will evidently make some of us very happy, Grover Norquist chief among them. Rush Limbaugh will applaud too because he'll be able to connect all the far-flung dots and figure out some way to blame only the Democrats and RINOS.
As a republican of 45 years I am so embarrassed to be affiliated with the party. I say let the republicans in congress and the speaker stay home in their states, take away their pay and perks, and cancel their lifetime medical insurance. I am tired of footing the bill for a party who doesn't care about the good of our country!! Obama has the power to pass legislation under extraordianary circumstances or whatever if our country is going to fall off a cliff! If Boehner and his band of "No" sayers won't act responsibly then Go for it Mr Obama!!
Voted you up, brave marilyyne.
really marilynne how contrived? Well see ya and don't let the door hit you in the @ss!
Ozziey01, right back at ya!
I still remember this from just after the 2010 House elections. When the newly minted Republican/Tea Party representative (I apologize for forgetting his name) from W VA was asked if he'd consider cutting his salary to help the deficit, he replied "Oh, no! I have an old minivan and six kids. I can't afford it."
And there you have it.
How is it you idiots seem to miss the "big picture" over and over again. The Republicans complain about the Democrats and the Democrats complain about the Republicans. Both sides tout their agendas and accomplishments while denigrating the opposition. Liberals complain about Conservatives and Conservative complain about Liberals. Each side wants the other side to move out of the country or just curl up and die.
You people are pathetic...whine, whine, whine...oh yeah I left out name calling...how about you try a little thinking before you hurl some epithet at the other side. The base name calling is for small children on the playground, exercise your brains a little. You can call the Republicans all kinds of nasty things, just be a little creative instead of just crude and vulgar. Republicans could use a lot of brushing up, I mean what passes for an insult from you people is really just stupid.
Listening to your comments (or reading what you like to pass off as writing) is saddening and boring.
What all of you seem to fail to grasp is that you're all headed for a serious repeat recession or depression. The national debt (regardless if you spend it on Social Security, Healthcare, Defense, etc., etc.) is building at a rate of 1.4 Trillion per year.
Of course we need to spend money to help families, and of course teachers, police, firefighters, etc. need help, and if we don't help homeowners, or rebuild the infrastructure and promote alternative energies, and help promote the arts, and help women/minorities/disabled/veterans/gays/lesbian/transgender folks, and the elderly and promote restoring nature, and helping the United Nations, defend our borders, etc., etc., etc. and not tax the middle class, the rich or the poor.
It leaves us with very few options, we either have to start conquering nations and stealing everything they have, maybe piracy (we do after all have a pretty big Navy).
The United States and the European Union have bolstered their economies by artificially inflating the volume of species/cash. Unless there is some unexpected shift in economic forces and theory, the rate of inflation is going to raise. All of "play" or "slop" in the system is about taken up. Greece used a lot of the energy and reserves of the EU while it balanced Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Italy. The US has leveraged themselves out for the next twenty years, there's no more to take from.
There is only so much of "all of it" and we've borrowed out to 97% of that. We haven't even begun to address underfunded public employee pension funds, the change over to the Affordable Health Care Act and the inevitable next natural disaster (60 Billion for Hurricane Sandy plus whatever hits next).
But you imbeciles have nothing better to do than call each other names...you just better hope North Korea doesn't do something stupid, or Syria doesn't do something stupid or Iran, or some Jihadist movement, or the Russians, or...you get the idea. You're so screwed and you don't even see it do you. You're not screwed because you're a Republican or a Democrat, you're screwed because you let the little things distract you while you and everyone in your "canoe" go over the falls while calling the idiots in the other canoe all go over the falls. Enjoy.
Obama and the democrats could have prevented the financial cliff in either 2009 or 2010 by implementing Obama's tax reform, but they didn't do that did they. They choose in 2010 to extended the Bush tax cuts to the rich.
This comes as no surprise as 11 of the 19 richest members of Congress are democrats. What comes as a surprise is that people actually post on here how they think those 11 democrats, that voted for the Bush tax cuts to the rich, are representing the middle class.
There are a lot of stupid Obama supporters on this site.
And the riches of them alllllllll is...........bingo you win Issa, that admitted felon, along with his side kick, that uber-rich booger from Texas, great buds, those two. don't cha just love it What, when you get followed around the thread and get caught cut and pasting. There were a lot of stupid republicans on the other sites and you were amongst them, oh dear busted.
skyparrot
Obama is worth $11.6 million today. Last year at this time he was only worth $10.1 million. Considering he only make $400,000.00/year that's quite an increase isn't it.
Apparently you also aren't aware that of the 19 richest members of Congress, 11 of them are democrats.
What was that you were saying about the rich screwing the middle class and seniors?
Stupid is defined in the dictionary as Obama supporters who refuse to get informed so they know what they are talking about.
There aren't and weren't enough votes to do as you claim. It would have taken some Republicans to be on board and they were all about NO WAY IN HE!! about passing anything the President or the Democrats proposed so don't say the Democrats coulda, shoulda, woulda when since 2009 the Republicans have dug in their heels and refused to budge on anything productive or even remotely wreaking of progress.
You want to know why Obama is failing to recover our economy? It easy. Obama's actions don't even come close to his words.
The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies.
And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.
Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America's priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans–a debt tax that Washington doesn't want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.
Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and
grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.
I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit.
Sen. Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., (Senate – March 16, 2006)
Yawn, usual low-down rotten right wing speak. Listen up stupedo, congress controls the $$, they are supposed to do the right thing for the Nation, naming post offices and going on vacation continuously is not the right thing. Return to sound fiscal policies ok, propose that the bottom feeders take a pay cut including perk cuts, cut staffs by 50% and maybe the American people will believe they are serious instead of grabbing for more middle class $$ and shifting the burden.

Hey ass hole, no one made Obama request, or signed the Spending Bills. NO one made Obama push for and get the Bush tax cuts to the rich extended in 2010.
NO one made Obama hire Bush's man Bernanke and stay the Bush economic course of bailouts and stimulus that you cried and are still crying about when you keep blaming Bush.
You are one stupid fool not to know that Obama had to sign the those spending Bills in order for the money to be spent. Or issue executive orders to spend the money.
No one made the 11 democrats who are amoung the richest Congress members vote for the Bush tax cuts to the rich in 2010 rather than implement Obama tax reform that he and they claim will save us from the financial cliff if they could only get it passed.
Don't try to educate What happened. HE blames obama for everything, even when the GOP did the same exact thing. In other words.. the Dems/Obama have to live up to a higher standard.
Remember, the GOP Has the country in a death grip for 6 years, and they voted 19 TIMES to raise the debt ceiling and added 5+Trillion to our deficit.
P.S. The two richest members of CONGRESS are REPUBLICANS:http://www.rollcall.com/50richest/the-50-richest-members-of-congress-112th.html Those to alone account for the rest of the DEMOCRATS in Congress.
Oh and isn't it even more interesting, that the DEMS don't mind a raise in taxes on themselves??
You are not only gullible, but past stupid. Go fly your upside flag in another country. What a disgrace
What 6 years were this country in the death grip of the Republicans. The democrats controlled Both houses of congress in 2007, 2008 2009, and 2010.
Bush added $5.1 trillion to the national debt in 8 years of which mose of it done in 2007 & 2008.
Obama staying the Bush economic course added over $6 trillion to the national debt in less that 4 years.
Our government was never going to shut down under Bush, but under Obama it was going to shut down on August 2, 2011, and October 1, 2012 and its being projected that it will shut down on or before March 1, 2013.
You don't have to lie or deceive to demonstrate that you're stupid, after all, you are an Obama support and that's all the proof one needs to know that your stupid.
Yawn. Bush was responsible for adding 5 TRILLION dollars to our debt. The problems didn't just start when the Democrats took back Congress. Do not even try to sell those cookies anywhere girlscout.
The point is, you blame the democrats and Obama for everything and give absolutely ZERO credit to the GOP and BUSH. They pushed us down this path, but .... oh no.. We can't hold them responsible for anything.
I do support Obama, but I dont believe in everything he does is right. But you on the other hand, blame him for everything. A fly could fart in the middle of the Atlantic and you would blame him for that too.
Save it. Aren't you supposed to be at a WestBoro Baptist Church Tent Revival?
Obama is a con, and man is he a good one.
There are people on this vine that I used to know as friends who have fallen into the trap.
Not all, but quite a few.
Once, I was the rooster on the fence, until I woke up and saw what liberalism was doing to capitalistic America.
Never more, never more.
THE GOP LOST IN NOV. Lost the White House, and lost seats in the Senate and House.
Heck they even lost a house seat in AZ to a bisexual woman. IN AZ! The state that is known to be filled with bible thumping teabaggers and birthers with guns!
The President is back at work, but where is the House, Mr. Boehner?
Still on vacation!
Ahh, Boehner still belly up at the local country club bar, McConnell trying to evict his in-bred relatives from his Elephant Farm, Cantor still playing with his draydel, Ryan pumping up Mrs. Munster, Issa conferring with his convict brother, Bachmann is still in the rubber room for batsh!t crazies--hard to round up gutless wonders. Guarantee Boeher is too blitzed to take a phone call.
Skyparrot
And Obama and Reid are still screwing the middle class and seniors while enjoying the tax cuts they gave themselves in 2010.
ummm NO.. That would be McConnell and that crybaby Boehner. They are the ones who are screwing the middle class and trying to CUT SS/Medicare for the seniors who paid into the system.
Why do you Obama supporters have such a difficult time comprehending the english language? Is it a learned behavior or a mental defect you like to demonstrate to the world.
The Democrats controlled both houses of congress in 2010 when Congress extended the Bush tax cuts to the rich and Obama Signed the extension into law.
Then Obama gets on National TV and insults your intelligence by telling the nation that he wants to, should be paying higher taxes.
You Obama suupporters are so gullible, it shameful. Duh! I'm an Obama supporter and I know that even though Obama is worth millions, I know that his signing the tax cuts to the rich weren't his fault. The devil make him do it, so I accept the tax hikes he heaped on me so he can get the tax cuts. After all, he needs the money more than the middle class and the seniors and I do.
Maybe one of the GOP Koch Brother supporters can answer this question: Who it leading the Republican Party today? Rush? Rupert? The Boehner? Face it, the GOP is rudderless and clueless. You can tell when the supporters here can only parrot tired, sad, disproven talking points.
Richardo98
Obama's failure at leadership, his words, is what is sad and pathetic.
Why is it you republictards can't give your hate, whining, complaining, and blaming on Obama.
Oh wait, I know, that's all you're good at
The GOP "leadership" is simply as worthless as teats on a bull!
For the 2013 session, they should be refereed to as "The INSANE Clown Posse".
They should just be honest, and state that the Orange Boner is drunk and is expected to remain drunk for the next week, and Weasel Cantor is off on an island with his poolboy.
Is Allen West holding the GOP hostage with antics like those that got him removed from the military?
Herron
You mean like the lack of leadership coming out of the Oval Office by that community leader.
Well, at least "Mr Turtle" McConnell will be in the Senate so he can filibuster some more of the bills he wrote!
"Mickey Mouse Mitch McConnell" is still celebrating Christmas at Disney World. The rest of the Teabeggers are just plain 'goofy.'
Of course not. Being there means they actually have to work. The lazy GOP House is too elite for that, they would rather treat it as a type of tax-payer subsidized unemployment where they sit around, farting, crapping themselves, and arguing fing stupid arguments and do nothing but. We should take the number of days the House is not in session, multiply that by 10,000 and then remove the resulting value from their pay checks. No more paid vacations until they actually do some work.
It is time for them all to stop getting paid for doing nothing and not even caring to do anything. Stop the high pay, perks, retirement. Work 5 days a week and if you can't accomplish anything for this country and its people than keep on working til you do. Do we get $174K per year of work from these people? NO
I must admit Obama and his rich lap dogs in Congress did do something for the American people. While they were giving themselves tax cuts, they did lift the ban on horse meat for human consumption and started rounding up all the wild horses on federal land and taking them to the slaughter houses.
Now when you buy that can of dog food, it will be labeled "Obama approved for human consumption."
And lets not forget that when Obama and his lap dogs in congress were giving themselves tax cuts, they were thinking of you and your children.
They redefined Pizza as a health food so that you won't feel guilty about serving what was once considered a junk food to you children.
Wow aren't we lucky. A man who held the title "Community Leader" holds the title "President" and he didn't even have to gain the experience of working a real job between changing titles.
Yeah, we know how much you republicants are thinking about our children. You want to arm teachers, but yet you don't want to pay for them. You like good schools, provided you don't have to pay for them.
They are union thugs right? the REPUBLICANS made pizza vegetable, not the dems, and REAGAN also made ketchup a vegetable too.
Yawn, what a disgrace
The Republicans are going on strike now....refusing to go back to work??? What the hell is wrong with these people, seriously???
We're in so much trouble...
The GOP released their calendar for next year. Has about 100 legislative days, Why the surprise that they don't want to come back now?
"It's up to the Senate Democrats." Really? To do what? Take up a vote on something that is garbage? We are going off the fiscal "curb" and it won't be until the stock market crashes (again) and the credit rating goes down (again) that the GOP will get the message that it is over for them.
Sounds like the GOP is running out the clock. I'd watch for the next kink in the GOP playbook of politics. Just because their not meeting tomorrow it's not that they arent meeting. The only things that won't happen is the photo ops and press conferences. You can bet that Cantor and his little @ss kissers are hard at work to make sure the pledges to Grover are upheld while holding the country hostage on the tax debate. Oh, and don't forget the Tea $hits as they are the driving force to the GOP's demise.
They have completely forgotten who they work for. Us! Their message is that they won't back down, leaving the dems standing there holding the bag. They are a disgrace, there is not a true statesman or leader among them.
Congress is full of uncaring boobs who are just interested in reelection so they can continue to live on the dole of our money. It’s about time they worked for the people and not for their own personal interest. That goes for republicans, democrats and tea party laggards. We have a new class of welfare kings and queens....wealthy senators and congresspeople.
"Pro forma". Hmm, sounds like a normal day at the office. I sure hope we aren't inconveniencing any of our elected officials or anything.
