The "revenue" Obama claims he wants is a farce. It doesn't matter what the tax rates are, since 1947 the tax revenue has ALWAYS been right around 18% of GDP. It may make a short jump to 19% or so, and it's even been in the 20% range for a couple years, but it always drops back down to 18%.

If you don't believe me, you can check the historical data yourself.

What's interesting is that Obama has admitted that raising taxes will hurt the economy. He ADMITS that raising taxes will reduce GDP! So if he knows the GDP will suffer under increased taxes and the historical evidence for the last 65 years shows that tax revenue is going to be about 18% of GDP, he cannot logically argue that increasing taxes will raise revenue.

The only explanation is that he is pushing a redistribution agenda that is more commonly called socialism.

It is commonly known in Financial circles that Small business per IRS standards can mean as many as 500 people working for the business. Most small businesses fall below $1,000,000 net profit in a year, But, many do not.

I kow a printer who has about 20 Employees. He had a good year in 2011. So good he bought a $2,000,000 piece of equipment he wasn't supposed to purchase. Why? Any cash in the company would have inflated his Profit and been taxed at 35%. So he bought the equipment despite not having a place to use it. It was far better to buy the equipment and store it than to take the hit on taxes. This year, instead of taking another hit on taxes, he bought a new, larger building and at last communication , so he can run this new equipment and hire more staff in 2013.

Any tax increase, regardless of who ends up paying it or what for that tax increase takes, will hurt the economy. Yes, Obama specified the middle class, but if he he's so worried about the fiscal cliff and the tax increase that will be a part of not reaching a deal, why has he decided that any deal had to wait until now? He has the power to get the spending cuts required to prevent them passed through the Democrat controlled Senate.

Nobody denies that the tax increase he wants for the wealthiest Americans will result in only $80 billion in revenue for the next year. Considering that the deficit for 2013 is supposed to be about $1.6 trillion, that's just a small drop (5%) in a very large bucket.

Using history as a guide, that tax revenue will actually diminish over the next few years as the wealthy shift assets and alter their incomes to avoid the new tax rates.

It would make far more sense to give up on his idea of increasing taxes and concentrate on the required spending cuts.

As it is, even sequestration isn't enough to bring the deficit under control. It only calls for a reduction in spending of 44 billion for FY2013. And let's not forget that cut is made AFTER the automatic 7% spending increase that is part of Congress' baseline budgeting.

The plain truth is that BOTH Democrats and Republicans are addicted to spending. In order to get our fiscal house in order we need to cut every single extra expenditure such as foreign aid, subsidies, new defense projects. We also need to reinstate Clinton's "workfare" policies and institute means testing for social security. This is only a partial list and only covers the most obvious items.

Bottom line, making the necessary cuts to our spending is going to make a LOT of people VERY angry and there is no way to avoid it. The best thing to do is to just admit the necessity of it and get it over with.

Did you even bother to read my first post where I showed that historical tax revenue rates were always at 18% of GDP regardless of tax rates? If not, I highly suggest you go read it and then do some research of the data on your own.

With tax revenue pretty much guaranteed to average no more than 18%, total spending cannot be more than 18% of GDP if we wish to have a balanced budget. If we wish to reduce our national debt, we need to spend less than 18% of GDP and use the rest to pay down the national debt.

Also, the only way to increase the dollar amount of tax revenue is to increase GDP. Raising taxes decreases GDP and creating a business friendly environment will increase GDP.

Even Obama admits that.

Your assertion that any tax increase will harm the economy is not true. Tax revenue that is used to improve infrastructure, such as roads, sewage systems, bridges, etc. actually help to increase economic activity in the short, and long term. Tax revenue used to improve education increases long term economic activity in the areas that generate higher dollars than an uneducated populace would provide. Tax revenue that is used to help those who have, through no fault of their own, become unemployed, actually improve economic activity in the short term because those dollars are spent immediately, thereby creating demand for products, and services (it is estimated that $1 of unemployment, welfare, and SNAP payments generate approximately almost twice as much in economic activity).

And if that wasn't enough of an example, the tax rates have been much higher during the most robust economic growth periods in this country.

Cuts? Yes, by all means, let's cut the bloated defense budget. We spend more on defense than Russia, China, Germany, France (and a few others that I forget) spend combined. How about we stop spending $4 billion in tax subsidies to the oil companies every year? How about we close the many loopholes that allow giant corporations, and the super wealthy to pay little to no taxes (also known as tax expenditures)?

How about we start with cuts on the people, and corporations that do not need these breaks before we start take away food and shelter from the poor, and health care from the elderly. How about we tax people who can afford it a little more before we deny a student an college education because there are no grants, or cheap student loans available.

It is greed that is taking down this country, people, not 'big government', not 'the welfare state', and certainly not President Obama. Greed. Plain and simple greed.

However, the ones that do clamor for tax increases say it should be on individuals and small businesses, as long as it's not big business that has to have them.

Why would they call for increasing taxes on individuals and small business? Because those businesses are defending their subsidies and trying to crush their newest competitors. In short, they are defending crony capitalism, otherwise known as corporatism.

You see, I own a small business and the last thing I want is to see my customers have less money in their pockets to spend. Raising taxes will take money that could be spent in the local economy and shift it to the federal government so they can pay back the corporations that paid for their election campaigns. So GE and GM make money, but the locksmith, grocer or the carpenter in your hometown suffers.

Small businesses are the main source of employment in the country and those are the ones that are most adversely affected by increased tax rates. Especially since they don't have high priced lobbyists in DC to get them the massive subsidies and tax breaks the big corporations get.

People like you are the problem. You cannot see that spending is out of control and there is no way to increase taxes enough to balance the budget. Even if we increase taxes and Obama see's the revenue that he want's, there is no way to get the $1.6T that would be needed to balance the budget.

I agree that defense spending is out of control due to the growth of the military industrial complex. But even if we slashed defense by 50%, that would only account for about $450B of the $1.6T deficit. That's just 28% of the deficit.

Where are the rest of the cuts supposed to come from?

Currently, our biggest non-defense expenses as a pecentage of total spending are Social Security (19.8%), MediCare (13.1%), Safety net programs like unemployment compensation, food stamps and housing assistance (12.6%), and Medicaid (10.1%). Those items account for 55.6% of all spending while defense accounts for just 22.6%.

Further more, we borrowed $1.6T of the $3.9T we spent last year. So that means we borrowed all but 59% of our spending last year. That means entitlements spent 94% of all tax revenue last year!

There is no way to get out of our current policy of overspending, that both the Republicans and Democrats are guilty of, without making serious cuts to entitlements AND defense.

I am for cutting every part of the government. Some parts more than others, but I cannot think of a single part that is not bloated.

What I am not in favor of is increasing the size and scope of government to take care of things it should not be. Obamacare is just one of those parts among many.

As for social security, it is currently running a deficit and is never projected to run a surplus again. How do you think they will pay for the Social Security deficit if not through diverting income tax revenue?

The $2.3T in tax revenue includes payroll taxes and the government spends 94% of all tax revenue, both payroll tax and income tax, on entitlements.

I suggest you spend a little less time reading economic theory and look at the actual data that has been posted at numerous government websites like the Treasury department, IRS and CBO. They all show the same thing. Government is too big to be supported by tax revenues alone. The only way to keep funding all the government programs at their current levels and allow for the annual 7% baseline budget increases is to borrow more every year. Unfortunately, the rest of the world cannot, or will not, continue to loan us money for much longer.

Social Security is not running a deficit. I do not know where you got that idea from, but it is simply not true. Social Security is actually running a surplus. Once again, it does not add a single penny to the deficit, or the debt. The problem it has is the income cap that turns this into the most regressive tax ever. Anyone making less than $110,100.00 (that is the latest figure I've seen), pays SS taxes on 100% of their income. If you make $220,200.00, you only pay SS taxes on 50% of your income, and if your income is 'carried interest' or 'capital gains', you pay 0% on your income. Removing the cap, and making all income subject to the tax would permanently fix the problem of funding, without any benefit cutting, or eligibility age increase. But, again, Social Security does not add a single penny to the debt, or the deficit.

'Obamacare' gave more to the insurance companies than anything else. It also cut Medicare spending by eliminating waste, and getting rid of the extra expense of paying private insurance companies for the same benefits the government was providing at a cheaper rate. And why shouldn't government help those who fallen on hard times? A healthy society is a more economically productive society. Are you suggesting that insurance companies should squeeze as much profit as they can from those who are suffering? Are you suggesting that we, as a society, through our government, shouldn't take care of those that the free market won't take care of? I may not be a Christian, but I do know that profiting off of those that are suffering is wrong, and that letting those that are suffering continue to suffer because 'there is no profit in helping them', or that it is not in the 'scope of government to take care of' is not what this country is about. Even the founding fathers thought that it was the government's duty to provide health care for those who could not provide it for themselves (do a little research, you'll find out about what I'm talking about).

Social security ran a $47.8B deficit in FY2012 and has been running a deficit since 2010. Sure, there may currently be money in the Social Security coffers, but a deficit is not the same as a debt. All you have to do is Google "Social Security Deficit" to find articles about it from The Washington Times, NBC News and others. They aren't just making up their information either. They are getting it from the Congressional Budget Office and the Social Security Board of Trustees.

As for the Social Security and the national debt, here are the government tax revenue sources and the amount gathered by each (in Billions) in 2011.

Individual Income Tax - $1,092

Corporate Income Tax - $181

Social Security - $819

Excise Tax - $72

Misc Other Tax - $139

Total Tax Collected - $2,303

However, in 2011, the government spent $3.598T

So the government is running a deficit in Social Security and entitlements (MediCare, Medicaid, Income Insurance) and Social Security consume over 90% of all tax revenue. And that tax revenue INCLUDES payroll taxes.

Dottie, I think for the most part you are spot on. I have two daughters both relatively young, naive and still living in that idealistic world where everything should be fair for all. They have voted for Obama and if you listened to them you would think Obama is the end all be all. So these are the kind of dumbbells that make up the 51% who think the money fairy will be around forever. The sad part is these are the same people that will be paying off the national debt long after I am gone. It will not sink in until it is to late and they can’t afford to live the life they are accustomed to. One of my daughters had an election night party to celebrate Obama’s win. She sent me a picture and explained who was who. I really hope I am around for another 20 or 30 years so I can see if these same young adults will still see the world as the same ideal place as they do today. One was laid off in August from an HR Manager job and the other is working two sub teaching jobs trying to make ends meet. The teacher may have a full time job next year if the school district can figure out the financial end of it. Her salary is minimal but they are struggling with the benefit side of things. Retirement, 401K and medical. I have been helping both of them out financially but informed them that on inauguration day the funds would be cut off. In my opinion it is time for them to start feeling the impact of their decisions. They are always welcome back home but life is going to change as they know it today.

Things like infrastructure investment (think President Eisenhower), extension of unemployment benefits when the unemployment rate was over 7% (creates immediate demand, which creates jobs, which boost s the economy, which lowers unemployment . . . see how that works?), funding higher education (an educated workforce is a more proficient workforce), and ensuring children have enough to eat (think SNAP).

When he tried to get a veterans job bill passed, who blocked it? The Republican/TP Inc. Congressmen, and Senators. When every economist was calling for a larger stimulus with less focused on taxes, and more focused on actual spending, the Republican/TP Inc. party forced (through the filibuster rule, and with the help of the blue dog Democrats) the first stimulus to be less than it should have been, and weighted more toward tax cuts than it should have been. And now economists, both left and right, are calling for another stimulus, but the Republican/TP Inc. party is having none of that.

Your daughters have it correct, you're the one making them pay for the mistake of supply side economics, stagnant middle class wages, and deregulation forced on us by the idiots on the right who support the only people who those policies are helping, the top 2%. The president wants to increase spending for veterans by about $5 billion a year over the next five years to meet growing health care needs.

All those on the right seem to have is one liners. If you ask one in what way Obama is a socialist they might say Obamacare but ignore that it was crafted by Romney as governor which he called it a model for the nation and he was generally praised for it's success. Clinton tried to craft a similar plan putting Hillary in charge of a commission and it failed as did Bush's attempt to hold back health care and insurance costs. Yet no one ever called any of these people socialists.

Some others may blame him for the flood of entitlement spending but ignore that he hasn't made anything easier to get. The CBO called the massive increase in food stamps, welfare and disability claims the result of the worst economic meltdown since 1929. It would be nice if at least one republican had enough brains to explain the belief Obama is a socialist. Maybe they're all just ignorant rednecks so immersed in the right wing talking heads agenda they can't think for themselves.
